GOOGLE NEWS ADDS QUOTATIONS
2008-04-18 01:46:00
Google is extracting quotations for politicians and celebrities from news sources and featuring them at the top of the Google News results page for certain searches. For instance, a search on "Barack Obama" brings up a quotation by the Democratic presidential hopeful, and clicking on his name under the quote takes you to more pages of his quotations. You can then search within just the quotations from there. "As part of Google's mission to organize the world's information, we've been hard at work making quotations in news articles easy to search and browse," the Google News blog says. "You can now more easily keep track of what your favorite politician, actor, or sports star is saying. You can even search within their quotes for specific topics." I could find quotations for Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, President Bush, and Vladimir Putin, but not for Bill Clinton or some major actors. As for sports stars, this is what Tiger Woods had to say: "I learned my lesson there w...
Quotations about Names
2008-04-10 00:00:00
I found two good name quotes recently. The first is from Sigmund Freud's Totem and Taboo (1913): A human being's name is a principal component in his person, perhaps a piece of his soul. The second is from Ecclesiasticus 41:12 (2nd century B.C.): Have regard for your name, since it will remain for ...
Unnecessary Quotations

This hilarious blog is called The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotations and it consists of reader-sent-in pics of signs containing (you guessed it) unnecessary quotation marks. They’re not all necessarily grammatically incorrect, though almost all are, but they are all ridiculous, and many change the intended meaning of the sign with great results. When people think ...

The Honesty of Atheism

?My practice as a scientist is atheistic. 20 Character Building Quotations
2008-03-04 09:22:00
You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself one. Henry David ThoreauBe your character what it will, it will be known, and nobody will take it upon your word. Lord ChesterfieldReputation is what men and women think of us; character is what God and angels know of us. Thomas PaineNothing of character is really permanent but virtue and personal worth. Daniel WebsterThe essential thing is not knowledge, but character. Joseph Le ConteIt requires less character to discover the faults of others, than to tolerate them. J. Petit SennA good name will shine forever. ProverbA fair reputation is a plant, delicate in its nature, and by no means rapid in its growth. It will not shoot up in a night like the gourd of the prophet; but, like that gourd, it may perish in a night. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations
2008-02-20 11:37:00
Oxford University Press, USA 2004-10-22 ISBN: 0198607202 Number Of Pages: 1168 7.21 MBDescription:The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations is as impressive, erudite, enjoyable, and educational a tome as you might expect from Oxford. It's the sort of undertaking the press does very well. The first such dictionary, as compiled by Oxford, was published in 1953, and it's been tweaking, modifying, and updating it ever since. This new edition, the fifth, offers well over 20,000 quotations from more than 3,000 authors. Responding to correspondence from their readers, Oxford has restored some material from past editions, such as the proverbs and nursery-rhymes section. There's a much more inclusive attention to sacred texts of world religions, and 2,000 quotations are brand new.The quotations are arranged alphabetically, by author, so browsing provides insight into the authors quoted, more so than do compendiums that are organize by theme. There is also, however, a full thematic index, starti...

2007-12-19 03:11:00
Why is a smartly dressed person sometimes referred to as DRESSED TO THE NINES? One theory suggests an allusion to a very high standard, nine marks out of a possible ten. This does not sound very convincing; nor does the theory that the expression refers to the nine Muses - a group of sister goddesses in Greek mythology who each protected or sponsored one of the arts. read more
