Thus, Political Realm will live on during my brief absence, though I won't be able to post on any breaking news. Be sure to check in this weekend for the return of the long lost Saturday Stew feature as well. Regular posting will resume Monday. Cheers!

Sorenson Squeeze 5
2008-03-31 18:37:00
As posted on the Macworld, Sorenson Media, have are releasing a new version of Sorenson Squeeze, 5. The big feature mention in the article is the ability to do multi-file encoding. From reading the article, it sounds like there are some really interesting new features.I used to use Sorenson Squeeze to encode videos, before H.264, and was very happy with the results, but, if I'm to be honest, I can't afford to upgrade, since it's essentially just updating the capabilities of the interface, with some new features. If it had been a new version of the Sorenson Codec, then that might be a different story entirely. But for what I do on a day to day basis, I can manage with Compressor.

Alltel and Cingular/AT&T Puttin? It To Sprint
2008-03-19 04:14:00
What comes around goes around? As you may know I was very much against NASCAR suppressing AT&T?s re-branding to Cingular. And we all know it was NASCAR in the courts, but it was NEXTEL/Sprint backing the whole thing. As a Ryan Newman fan I was very happy to see Newman win the Daytona 500 ...

2007-12-03 15:22:00

2008 Nissan GT-R news update
2007-10-18 08:18:00
More news on Nissan?s new GT-R has come through overnight and although four articles on the same car in 24hrs may be overkill?its got to be done. As we suspected and previously reported there will be no manual gearbox option. Nissan have elected to only offer the one transmission, their GR6 dual-clutch six-speed along with leather wrapped paddle shifters. Nissan have been busy at the Nurburgring with their new baby and have confirmed (to Motor Trend at least) that the best lap time so far has been 7:35 but they are still out there with every intention of going faster. Again, we reported on this some weeks ago and it seems our sources at the time were correct. To get this sort of performance in perspective, the GT-R is lapping the ?Ring faster than the 996 GT2, Porsche 977 Turbo and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, is one second slower that the Koenigsegg CCR and two seconds slower than the Pagani Zonda F. With an estimated entry price of around US80,000 that equates to cheap access ...

Nationwide could become new Busch Series sponsor
2007-10-03 04:25:00
Nationwide is moving into the final stages of negotiations to replace Anheuser-Busch?s Busch beer as title sponsor of NASCAR?s #2 series, sources are telling Street & Smith?s SportsBusiness Daily. Michael Smith of Street & Smith?s SportsBusiness Journal this morning reported in the Daily that Nationwide submitted an offer last Thursday, as did Subway, the sandwich franchise operation that had been considered the frontrunner.Nationwide?s talks with NASCAR progressed over the weekend, the story said, and a contract proposal is believed to be in the legal pipeline at Nationwide. Officials at NASCAR say that it does not have a deal with a new sponsor, but sources say an agreement with Nationwide could be finalized in the coming days.

NASCAR slows COT speeds on second day of Talladega test
2007-09-12 04:23:00
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) ? NASCAR slowed speeds Tuesday on the Car of Tomorrow at Talladega Superspeedway, where only half the field topped 190 m.p.h on the second day of the test session. With a smaller restrictor-plate, only 27 drivers went over 190. Paul Menard turned the fastest lap of the day at 193.045 mph in a Chevrolet. Speeds reached 196 m.p.h on Monday, and 44 drivers topped 190."We have the tools to slow them down. NASCAR did a good job with that," driver Ryan Newman said. "Basically we're just acclimating the car to the race track."The CoT is being phased into competition this season, and it will make its restrictor-plate race debut at Talladega in October. That event is also in the Chase for the Nextel Cup championship.NASCAR experimented with several restrictor-plate packages and wicker setups, and there didn't seem to be many complaints about the car's handling."It drives like it's on a rail," Carl Edwards said. "We have to work on the visibility through the cars. You c...
Penske Racing to build test track in Mooresville
2007-09-01 17:04:00
Penske Racing plans to build a test track in Mooresville similar in size and layout to the track at Richmond International Raceway. The 54-acre site on Mazeppa Road would include 1/4- and 1/2-mile ovals within the 3/4-mile oval track, and a 1.8-mile road course, documents filed with the Iredell County Planning Department show.At its neighboring race shop, Mooresville-based Penske already designs, makes and tests high-performance vehicles for competition in the Nextel Cup and Busch series, Indy Racing League, and Automobile Racing Club of America and American LeMans series. The test track also would accommodate law-enforcement training and recreational motorsports, but is not for spectators paying admission, Penske says in its filing with the county. Testing would be between 8am and 6pm/et, according to the filing. The acreage now includes two ball fields and a vacant lot. The land is zoned for heavy industrial uses, including race tracks, Iredell County Planner Rebecca Harper said.Pe...
ESPN's NASCAR Coverage Needs MAJOR Overhaul
2007-08-28 04:15:00
I have grown very sick and tired of ESPN's NASCAR coverage. From the live races to there "NASCAR Programs" like NASCAR Now. They don't seem professional to me and especially their race coverage is boring. This past weekend at Bristol, Kasey Kahne was leading with Newman in second. Caution came out and everyone came down pit road. They never showed Kahne or Newman on pit road except of Kane leaving and being the first off of pit road. They showed other guys on pit road that were much farther back. All the viewers new was that Kahne was the first on and first off. Newman was second on and 4th off. They didn't even really know that, they had to wait for the restart. How many times do they not show the top 2 on pit road especially when they are racing pretty close? Granted, no matter what and no matter what station, Newman does not get much coverage. But running in second should have got some and with Kane leading he should have been shown on pit road. Commercial. Could they possibly h...
AT&T - Nascar Forcing AT&T To Put Cingular Name On RCR/Jeff Burton's #31
2007-08-23 22:18:00
*************** In this article AT&T is quoted as saying that NASCAR is REQUIRING then to not only remove the AT&T name and logo immediately, BUT also they MUST have the name Cingular on the car.   Are you kidding me.  If Budweiser wanted a red and white paint scheme that did not actually say "Budweiser" on it, would NASCAR force Budweiser to have their name on it?  I don't think so.  What if Home Depot just wanted a orange car with out the "Home Depot" on it.  Would NASCAR make them?  Don't think so!   NASCAR is WAY over board here.  I can understand wanting the "Go Phone" off of the car IF IF IF that was not part of the previous Cingular.  But MAKING them put the name Cingular on the car...WOW! Sounds like AT&T really wants to stay in the game and keeps trying.  Good luck to them, RCR and Jeff Burton.   WAY OUT OF CONTROL- Don't know why, but this story and this subject gets my blood boiling.*************** BRI...
Court says AT&T must be removed from No. 31 car
2007-08-23 03:26:00
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a mandate allowing NASCAR to require the removal of AT&T logos from the No. 31 Chevrolet owned by Richard Childress Racing and driven in the Nextel Cup Series by Jeff Burton.Tuesday's mandate was an affirmation of the 11th Circuit's unanimous decision to vacate the preliminary injunction granted to AT&T in May by U.S. District Senior Judge Marvin H. Shoob. The appeals court had ruled Aug. 13 that, because AT&T was not an intended third-party beneficiary of the "grandfather clause" that allowed Cingular to continue its sponsorship of the No. 31 car, the injunction was not valid on breach-of-contract grounds. The grandfather clause was a provision of NASCAR's agreement with RCR that allowed Cingular to sponsor the car after NASCAR contracted with Nextel, a competitor of Cingular in the telecommunications industry, as exclusive title sponsor of the Cup Series, beginning in 2004. A series of mergers brought AT&T and Cingular together, ...

**** Just curious as to what RCR/Jeff Burton will run for a logo/sponsor.  I don't think AT&T really wants to go back to Cingular.  They have almost completly phased out Cingular, except that there are some comercials still out there about the two merging.  Any ideas??? ******     NASCAR expects the AT&T logos to be removed from the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing car for the Nextel Cup events this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.   The U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a mandate Tuesday that its decision to be followed that NASCAR is not legally required to allow the AT&T logos on the Jeff Burton car, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Tuesday night.   Court documents indicate that AT&T plans to ask the district court to consider another injunction under the premise that NASCAR's actions indicated that a logo change was permissible and therefore it's an injustice that they cannot.
Well, What Logo will Jeff Burton and RCR have on the #31 car

I have not heard anything about this.  And I am kind of suprised about it.   On Monday the Judge said that they had 5 days to reply.  AT&T did ask the court to reconsider on Friday and determned that they would be racing with theAT&T logo in SUNDAY's race.  But here it is Monday and I think the 5 days is up.  And if it is postponed even farther to Tues, then definetly the 5 days is up.   And more importantly, what are they going to do after that.  Is AT&T just going to use the Cingular brand name on the car.  That doesn't make alot of sense because there isn't a Cingular anymore.  Will AT&T be allowed to just pull out.  Where will that leave Jeff Burton and RCR.   I think the Judge should at least let AT&T finish out the year.   BUT - Ultimetly AT&T , RCR and Jeff Burton are completly right in this situation.  AT&T should be able to have that logo on their car.   Mike
Qualifying changes as soon as New Hampshire?

***Don't know if there is truth to this or not, but this is what autoracing.com and captianthunder racing.com are reporting.  I don't know. I guess it helps.  I still don't think it should be a top 35.  I understand that the most revenue is from people coming to see the top drivers race, but.....I don't know.  And I don't know the correct answer.  I agree a change is needed.  Maybe top 25? I don't know.  I hate seeing people have a good qualifying run, but not be allowed to race *****   STORY   NASCAR will make changes to the Nextel Cup qualifying format sooner rather than later. A source within NASCAR confirmed to Captain Thunder that they would indeed change the way teams qualify for Nextel Cup races, and the changes will take place this season instead of next.   Currently, all race entries are placed in to a'lottery type' format to decide qualifying order and all entries must qualify against one another. But, not for long....
Appeals court sides with NASCAR in AT&T dispute
2007-08-14 06:12:00
I totatlly disagree with the court --- in case you wanted my opinion!!!MikeATLANTA -- A ruling by a federal appeals court cleared the way for NASCAR to prevent AT&T Inc. from featuring its logo on Jeff Burton's No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Monday in its order that San Antonio-based AT&T lacks standing to challenge NASCAR's decision. The court, therefore, threw out a lower court's ruling that prevented NASCAR from stopping AT&T's plans. The appeals court remanded the case to the U.S. District Court in Atlanta for dismissal. At issue is AT&T's desire to change the Cingular logo on Burton's car to the AT&T logo. AT&T bought Atlanta-based BellSouth Corp. last year, gaining full control of Cingular and has since rebranded the cell phone provider under the AT&T name.NASCAR has tried to prevent the Cingular logo from being changed to the AT&T logo on Burton's car because AT&T rival Sprint Nextel Corp. sponsors NASCAR's premier ...
