Japan Car Blog reviews Top Gear 11.04 GT-R vs Bullet Train race
2008-07-17 08:28:00 The always excellent Japan Car Blog reviews the latest episode of Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson raced a Bullet train across Japan. The Hamster and James May were in the bullet train and their journey also included a shuttle bus, another train, a ferry, and a ____________ (can't say, don't want to spoil the surprise or the great soundtrack that plays during it). Jeremy got the GT-R and a 400-mile route to follow from western Japan thru Tokyo and across the bay to the finish. Their blog includes low-res segments of the race: http://japancarblog.com/2008/07-/top-gear-clarksons-ego-in-gt-r--vs-bullet-train/ (suggest- <right click> and <open in new tab>) or the entire episode is available via torrent sites. They also correctly point out that some of Jeremy's comments are culturally offensive. Actually the entire cast makes more than a few gaffes, and they all look tired and glad to get it over with. James May looks particularly worn out, or perhaps he is just...
Race in a 1970's California Beach Town
2008-07-01 02:53:00 The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated July 12:When I grew up on the California beach in the 1970's, we had no White parts of town and Black parts of town. The whole place was White, with ethnics, Jews, NE Asians, Filipinos, Hispanics and mixed race folks scattered all about in fairly small numbers. It was a White culture in a White beach town, Huntington Beach. All of the non-Whites pretty much just assimilated to the White, or American, or White American culture of the city. There was one Black kid in the school and I was his friend! There was a small group of Hispanics (Chicanoized) with gangs, and the Chicano barrio mindset at the school and I was friends with them!I'm such a racist! From the early days yet! Snark. What I am trying to say is that for all intents and purposes, in Huntington Beach, race just did not exist at all. The non-Whites associated with Whites and ...

My Vlog On Friends, Race, Depression, and Consideration
2008-06-30 04:33:00 I created this "vlog" (video-blog) to deal with and talk about a problem I've had with certain friends.Perhaps you've had the same problem where some of your, in my case, friends who are White (or the reverse or generally interracial) don't give you proper "consideration" in your friendship, where consideration is a kind of contract that all friendships have -- a contract of basic expectations of treatment. In other words, while you call them, they don't call you, or if you are dealing with someone who's racist, they tell you that you "see racism" rather than coming to your aide.Or they are your friends as long as they're able to take advantage of you or get information from you, but when they get around their friends, you suddenly don't exist.I'd like to know your response to my video and your view.Thanks.
TonyaTko's Sad About The State Of Race; I'm Not
2008-06-30 03:35:00 I just read TonyaTko's blog where she's sad about the state of race. I think what she's talking about is racial self-hatred, and I do agree that it does seem to be alive and well. But I'm hopeful in that it's not as widespread in my experience and I feel that digital media can play a role in repairing the problem.
Demand Fox stop race baiting and fear mongering
2008-06-27 12:57:00 I'm a little late to the party on this one, but head over to colorofchange.org and sign this petition: Demand Fox stop race baiting and fear mongering . Here are the details:After Senator Obama won the Democratic nomination, he and his wife gave each other a "pound" in front of the cameras?a Fox anchor called it a "terrorist fist jab." Then last week, a Fox News on-screen graphic referred to Michelle Obama as "Obama's baby mama"?an attempt to associate the Obamas with racist stereotypes. Tell Fox News chief Roger Ailes to stop racism before it hits the airwaves, and make it clear that you'll take action when another racist smear happens.
Fairness Doctrine Issue In Indiana Congressional Race
2008-06-24 07:04:00 Photo by jurvetson A candidate for Indiana’s second district congressional seat has taken a stance against the “Fairness Doctrine,” saying that instead of fostering speech, imposing requirements for “fairness” will actually limit free speech because it will make radio stations afraid to air controversial viewpoints, commentaries and talk radio shows. Says Republican Luke Puckett on the “Fairness Doctrine“: I strongly support Rep. Mike Pence’s effort to keep the Fairness Doctrine from coming back. The Fairness Doctrine is simply a thinly veiled attempt to muzzle the free speech rights and freedom of association rights of broadcasters, show hosts and listeners. We must not let it be reinstated now or at any time in the future. While fairness is an admirable goal, when the “Fairness Doctrine” was in effect, there weren’t any radio talk shows — either on the left or the right — because radio executives were fe...

Pre-race MotoGP Test Schedule At Indianapolis Motor Speedway
2008-06-11 01:31:00 As Indianapolis is a new track this year, the MotoGP riders will get to test at the track before the actual race takes place in September. The date for this test has been announced as July 1st and 2nd. The MotoGP schedule for this period is already intensely busy, with the British Grand Prix at Donington on June 22nd, followed 6 days later by the Dutch TT at Assen on June 28th. The teams will have just two days to pack up and fly out to Indianapolis, where they will take part in a two day test starting July 1st, before flying back to Europe again ready for the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring on July 13th, followed by the US GP at Laguna Seca in California just a week later. By the time they've finished, they should have enough frequent flyer miles to get NASA's Manned Mission to Mars well underway. 2008 Catalunya Post-Race Testing - Day 1
2008-06-10 02:15:00 Testing was rather eventful, with Casey Stoner setting the fastest time on the new carbon-fiber frame Ducati Desmosedici GP9, the bike scheduled to race next year. Both Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa switched back and forth between the steel-valve Honda RC212V and the new pneumatic valve engine, but Pedrosa had a nasty highside on cold tires, and was forced to retire. Testing of the bike will now be down to Nicky Hayden for tomorrow. Hayden was 4/10ths quicker on the new bike than on the old bike during the race weekend on race tires. 2008 Catalunya MotoGP Race Report - Leading From The Front
2008-06-09 15:46:00 Ask a dozen riders what their favorite race was, and you'll get a dozen different answers. But as different as those answers may be, in the end, they divide out into two camps. On the one hand, there are the Racers, the riders who love nothing more than to battle with their rivals all race long, only to pass them in the final corner and go on to take the win. On the other, there are the Winners, the riders who only care about getting away from the pack and dominating the opposition. The Racers love to win by fractions of a second, the Winners love to win by minutes. This issue doesn't just divide racers, it also divides fans. Some enjoy nothing more than watching their favorite rider put in lap after perfect lap, gapping the competition by a second or more every time the cross the line. To them, their pleasure in racing is in watching a motorcycle being ridden as fast as humanly possible, the rider attempting to ride the bike at its very limit every inch of the track. For these ...

2008-06-09 04:00:00 The SundryBuzz blog offers up some key advice on taking group photos that aren’t boring, both for the participants and in the final result. As long as everyone in group is able to move about, place your subjects behind a digital camera, or put the camera facing up at a distance. Trigger a 10-second timer, wait a few seconds, then have everybody race to get into the frame. You’ll likely genuine smiles and enthusiasm, rather than faces strained from trying not to blink. Montreal Grand Prix: A race full of surprises.
2008-06-08 22:52:00 Historically, the Canadian Grand Prix is the theatre of exceptional performances and has a lot of surprises in store. Today's edition was no different. The 30th Canadian Grand Prix was the occasion for the BMW-Sauber to shine. Not only Robert Kubica finished in first place for the first time in his career but Nick Heidfeld who was starting from the eight spot finished in second place. A pleasant and unexpected one-two finish for the team who finishes in first place for a first time also. The main incident of the race came at the 19th lap when the Force India of Adrian Sutil stalled and was forced to retire. The safety car was sent out on the track and the leaders decided to pit in. Lewis Hamilton who was starting from the pole position came out of the pits after his service behind Robert Kubica and Kimi Raikkonen. Hamilton committed a fatal mistake when he came out of the pitlane. He did not see the red light and the stalled Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen and rammed him. Both drivers had ...

Kahne overcomes pit snafu to dominate Pocono race
2008-06-08 21:06:00 LONG POND, Pa — Pole-sitter Kasey Kahne recovered from missing lug nuts that dropped him to the back of the field — and weathered myriad strategic ploys from his rivals — to win Sunday’s Pocono 500 Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway. The victory was Kahne’s second of the season and the ninth of his career in 158 starts, but it wasn’t as easy as Kahne’s 3.702-second margin of victory over Brian Vickers might suggest. After a restart on Lap 182 of the 200-lap event, Kahne passed Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Lap 183 and Vickers on Lap 185 to take the lead for the final time. Denny Hamlin ran third, followed by Earnhardt and Jeff Burton, who trimmed the series points lead of 43rd-place finisher Kyle Busch to 21 points. Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards and Mark Martin completed the top 10. Kahne is riding a wave of momentum that dates to the May 17 Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. After Kahne failed to qu...

Microsoft announced this week that it is extending the cut-off date for sales of the older edition of Windows until 2010, specifically to serve the needs of customers who are planning to buy one of the new wave of low-cost laptops due to arrive this summer. It's not hard to see why. The mini-laptop that started it all, the Asus Eee PC, shipped with Linux pre-installed, and many of the new machines are likely to take the same road. In fact, some PC makers are reportedly so enamored with Linux that the news of an XP option might fall on deaf ears. This is a fascinating development, and with any luck it could be the start of a promising new trend.

Keselowski gets first career victory with late-race pass
2008-06-07 22:06:00 GLADEVILLE, Tenn. — Brad Keselowski raced to his first Nationwide Series victory Saturday night, passing Clint Bowyer with six laps to go and easily holding off his closest rivals at Nashville Superspeedway. Kyle Busch, racing in the second of three NASCAR races in a historic weekend triple, finished 20th, three laps down. A green-flag pit stop with 52 laps to go bounced him from the top five to two laps down. Keselowski, driving for Dale Earnhardt Jr., became the seventh first-time winner in 15 Nationwide races at Nashville Superspeedway. David Stremme rallied to finish second, followed by David Reutimann and Bowyer. Busch’s setback came 24 hours after his second-place finish in the Craftsman Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. By starting Sunday at Pocono, the Sprint Cup Series leader will become the first driver to compete in all of NASCAR’s top three series at different tracks on the same weekend. Busch will start in a backup car at the tail of...
Jason Statham stars in new "Death Race" movie
2008-06-07 20:24:00 Death Race is a loose remake of Death Race 2000, the schlock classic starring David Carradine (Frankenstein) and Sylvester Stallone (Machine Gun Joe Viterbo). It's set in a similar future post-industrial wasteland,- where the most popular sport is a brutal cross-country race with no rules and points awarded for murdering innocents - and the more innocent the better. Ordinarily, I don't like remakes but the starring presence of Jason Stratham will make this a fun movie to see over dinner and drinks. His modified Mustang (below) is outfitted with chain guns, flamethrowers, and grenade launchers. (picture copyright Universal) Sounds like amust see...! The release is planned for August 22 2008, although that may change if release dates have to be moved around to mitigate the (possible) upcoming actors strike. This site features over 150 blog categories on various automotive topics. One covers movies for the Driving Enthusiast: Blog: http...
Rock, thefts and racism
2008-06-07 08:53:00 I didn?t write much about the rock festival that Katy and I went to last Saturday, as I was more concerned about my stolen wallet. (I?m still rather concerned about the loss of the drivers license, as according to the GA DMV website, you need to know your license number in order to replace it, and I don?t.) Anyway, as I mentioned in the post about the wallet, the sound quality at the rock festival was definitely sub-par. Even groups which we had heard before, which we knew normally sounded good (such as our friends in the band Cadillac), sounded terrible at this event. As such, I won?t bother wasting my time uploading any videos. I will, however, post some shots of Cadillac performing:While at the festival, we ran into Lyuba, a girl of 17 who is one of Katy?s former students. I told her how I?d just had my wallet stolen, and her reaction was, ?But you?re OK, right?? She then gestured to a vertical scar bisecting her lower lip and told me the following story:One night as she was walk...

Hayden Won't Race Pneumatic Valve Engine At Barcelona
2008-06-05 23:51:00 Apparently, it's still not ready. There are very few stories about MotoGP where a sentence so obtuse can be so obvious, but almost every MotoGP follower worth their salt will immediately understand that "it" is Honda's pneumatic valve engine, and what it won't be ready for is the upcoming MotoGP race at Barcelona in Catalunya, Spain. Development of the engine has been going on for 7 months now, but it continues to be plagued by problems - albeit problems of a decidedly unspecified nature. At first there were rumors of reliability problems, with the phrase "grenade engine" being bandied about the paddock. Then, it was said to be a question of edge grip and drive, with Tady Okada, HRC's test rider who ride the bike as a wildcard at Mugello last weekend, saying that the power delivery was still not what it should be.
