Radicalization on the web in Europe
2008-04-22 21:09:00 European authorities are taking very seriously the threat of radicalization over the web. I just wrote an article for the Middle East Times on that topic. Here is an excerpt: A few months ago Bernard Squarcini the head of the DST (Direction de la Surveillance du Territoire), the French equivalent of the FBI, told the French daily Libération regarding Islamic radicalization: "An ideological transformation can be done in three months on the Web. An individual can at night auto-radicalize himself via...(read more)
Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007
2008-01-13 03:11:00 Clearly, we have to watch Democrats as well as Republican about retaining our Civil Liberties. The House, in a wave of paranoia, passed a law against promulgating any "extremist ideology" on the internet or other means. Homeland Security gets to decide what is extremist. Here is the voting breakdown. Click on the link to see where your Representative voted. Clearly my (MN) House delegation didn't understand what they were voting on. Internet censorship also was spurred on under the false illusion of making us safer from terrorists. H.R. 1955, a bill creating a seemingly innocuous commission to study so-called "homegrown terrorism," contained several troubling provisions. Instead of focus...

Violent Radicalization & Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act, HR 1955, by US
2007-12-05 07:00:00 Madame Speaker, I regret that I was unavoidably out of town on October 23, 2007, when a vote was taken on HR 1955, the Violent Radicalization & Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act. Had I been able to vote, I would have voted against this misguided and dangerous piece of legislation. This legislation focuses the weight of the US government inward toward its own citizens under the guise of protecting us against ?violent radicalization.? I would like to note that this legislation was brought to the floor for a vote under suspension of regular order. These so-called ?suspension? bills are meant to be non-controversial, thereby negating the need for the more complete and open debate allowed under regular order. It is difficult for me to believe that none of my colleagues in Congress view HR 1955, with its troubling civil liberties implications, as ?non-controversial.? read more

The Radicalization of an Ordinary Woman
2007-07-20 20:42:00 In 1977, my darling first born child received a diagnosis of âdevelopmental delays of unknown etiology.â Though I was a nurse, and it only confirmed what I was seeing, the diagnosis scared me. Could I help my sweet baby girl? What did she need? Will she have a good life? Almost immediately, I started gathering information and sticking my nose into unwelcoming places. It was easy to see that the world was not ready for her. I knew I had to do something, but what? As it turned out, 1977 was a pretty lucky year to be diagnosed with a disability. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the first civil rights law for people with disabilities, was signed into law in1973. In 1977, after fiddling with the regulations that would give the law its legs, then Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), Joseph Califano, refused to sign the regulations. Disability rights activists took the streets in 10 cities on April 5th. The San Francisco HEW Office found that 150 demonstrators ha...

MPAC in Denial About Radicalization of Muslim Youth?
2007-05-24 02:44:00 Earlier today, on CNBC?s Kudlow & Co., I debated the spokeswoman for the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), Edina Lekovic, on the findings of the recent Pew Poll on the levels of radicalism within the American Muslim community. Lekovic, while a student at UCLA, was Managing Editor of the Muslim Student Association?s newspaper, al-Talib. In ...
