Defiant Hamas bulldozes Rafah crossing wider
2008-02-02 13:06:00
By Nidal al-Mughrabi RAFAH, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - Hamas used a bulldozer to widen a breach in the Gaza-Egypt border on Friday so trucks could pass out of the Israeli-blockaded Palestinian territory despite Egypt's efforts to seal the crossing, witnesses said. An armed Hamas militant clung on to the outside of the yellow bulldozer's cab as the driver went about his work, and a number of other armed men close by provided additional cover. Local Palestinian residents and the waiting truck drivers cheered "crush the barrier" and shouted out "Hamas" as the bulldozer cleared a path wide enough to allow trucks to pass in either direction. The truck drivers then hurried back to their vehicles to cross the border in the fading afternoon light while Egyptian forces, who earlier this week closed two other crossings and narrowed the third, backed away and watched from a distance. The development came as a second day of talks between Egypt and Hamas leader Khaled Mesh...

Border Fence Folly at Rafah, Gaza
2008-01-25 03:06:00
Wednesday’s breach of Israeli-built concrete and steel “border fencing” by Hamas militants in Rafah, Gaza, with tens of thousands of Palestinians now streaming into Egypt to buy food, fuel and other supplies they haven’t had access to in months, demonstrates once again the futility of walling people in or walling people out. Desperate people do desperate things, as we theoretically learned from the Berlin Wall debacle. Masked Palestinian gunmen simply blew holes into the Gaza-Egypt border fence on Wednesday, and that was that.
Wedding bells to ring after fall of Rafah wall
2008-01-23 12:21:00
By Nidal al-Mughrabi RAFAH, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - While other Palestinians lugged food and fuel from Egypt into the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, Omran Lubbab took advantage of the fall of Gaza's Rafah wall to bring his future bride home. "No more delays," said Lubbab, a 34-year-old Gaza cameraman, vowing to marry fiance Heba al-Qadi in two weeks' time. Lubbab was reunited with Qadi, a Palestinian who lives on the Egyptian side of the divided town of Rafah, after stepping through one of the gaps Hamas fighters blew in the border wall dividing the town. "We have been engaged for two years but our wedding has been delayed because of the closure of the border crossing," said Qadi, who carried two suitcases filled with new dresses into the Gaza Strip to begin her new life. Israel and Egypt have largely kept the Rafah passage sealed since Hamas Islamists violently took over the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in June. In a d...
