2008-05-19 12:03:00 How Rail Travel Was Sabotaged by Oil and Rubber Lobbies [The vast replacement in the U.S. of our railroad and trolley systems by highways did not just happen by accident. It was vehemently lobbied for by the rubber, oil, and automotive and trucking industries back in the 1920s and 1930s I happened ...

Just keep in mind that it’s not always possible to bring your bike on the train. 2008-02-13 11:15:00 I wrote recently about the complexity of judging the best way for me to travel to Glasgow Airport from my home in Berwick upon Tweed in Northumberland to catch my Easyjet flight to Berlin. 2007-12-11 18:57:00 Every day between 5.30am and 1.30am, about a half a million of people pass through Grand Central Station located at East 42nd Street and Park Avenue. Opened in 1913, it’s one of the most beautiful and original railway stations in the world. I’ve always been fascinated by airports and railway stations and Grand Central Station is one of ...

Amtrak and the Future of American Rail Travel
2007-11-25 17:25:00 Amtrak is an unusual company. Its board of directors is appointed by the President of the United States and in order to function, Amtrak receives well over a 1 billion dollars a year from the federal government. During the course of its life, Amtrak has made several pushes to profitability, all of which have eventually failed. Especially considering the high ticket prices, many have started to question the necessity of a national rail carrier at the price of so many tax dollars.

Rail travel for our derailed planet
2007-03-30 22:21:00 Swedish Fritidsresor, a travel agent, recently introduced a climate friendly train charter package to Lake Garda in Italy. This new concept proved to be very successful and all tickets were sold out in one day!I think flying will become less of an option quite soon. Flying is, if you think of it, a very uncomfortable, boring and scary way of travelling. By train you can move around freely and you can enjoy the panorama of the land passing by. You can get fresh air. You don't have to watch out for the steward's food and drink wagon in the aisle when you have to go to the lavatory. You can dine at a real table and you can sleep in a bed. The many benefits with rail travel should make it easy to shift from air travel. The shift will either way become necessary.A great and sensible initiative! I hope more travel agents will get on track.DN

Rail travel disruption in Scotland due over Easter
2007-02-23 05:43:02 I know that there is never a good time to shut Glasgow Central railway station, the busiest station in Scotland. First Scotrail have announced the Glasgow Central will be close on the 7 - 8 April 2007 for major signalling work. There will also be disruption at Glasgow Queen St railway station from 6 - 10 April and there will be a replacement bus service between Inverkeithing and Perth and Dundee from 7 - 9 April due to works at Inverkeithing station. So we are not supposed to fly or drive because of the pollution and harm caused to the environment this causes and taking the train in Scotland over the Easter weekend will be more bother than it is worth. Should we all just stay at home? |
