Start of Pakistan Railways
2009-09-17 04:33:00
Owais Mughal The first railway line was laid in the in the areas that now comprise Pakistan in the year 1858 in Karachi. Following is the story of this historical event as well as the construction of first railway section of Pakistan which was opened between Karachi City and Kotri in 1861. Following photo is kind of jumping the gun in our story but it is the earliest photo of railways that I could research for Karachi-Kotri section. The photo is circa 1900 and shows the 0530 a.m. passenger train reaching Frere Road Station (now called Karachi Cantt) from Kotri. The origin of Railways in Pakistan is quite unusual. The railway here was not built for commercial passenger service but more for the reason of cutting transport time for cargo bound for East. The first line from Karachi to Kotri was constructed primarily to reduce the journey time on the final stage of long haul from Britain to Delhi and Calcutta. Many of the later lines were built for Military purposes. The Early Planning...
Attock Crossing
2009-02-04 09:53:00
Owais Mughal We have briefly covered Attock Bridge in our earlier posts at ATP titled: The Bridges of Pakistan and When Kabul Comes to Attock. Today?s whole post is dedicated to this great bridge?s importance in Pakistan?s Railway network, its history, salient features and its current condition. As soon as the British annexed area around present day Punjab-NWFP boundary, they started working on the idea of bridging Indus at Attock. The crossing at Attock was considered very important for military strategic reasons. In 1853, one Colonel Crommelin proposed two designs, both which made use of suspension bridges to cross the Indus. While this design didn?t go forward, British provided a better bridge of boats for winter, ferry boats for summer and a light rowing boat for daak (postal services).Click on the photo above to see its larger image. This photo was taken in 1863 by William Baker and it shows the Bridge of Boats at Attock as well as the famous Attock Fort.In 1865, Colonel A. Robe...

June 7, 1926--Milwaukee's First Airmail Service Flown
2008-06-07 20:01:00
The Wisconsin Historical Society informs of this historic occassion: a airmail service is from Chicago to Milwaukee to LaCrosse to St. Paul is up and operating before the Great Depression.. Are you telling me that we cannot--82 years later!--have a passenger railway operating from Chicago to Milwaukee to Madison to LaCrosse to Eau Claire to St. Paul? I don't think it is a matter of can versus cannot; instead, it is a matter of policy versus politics. Let your representatives know that they should quit playing politics with policy that need to be implemented.

RAILWAYS IN BIND OVER PRIVATISATION
2008-03-07 14:19:00
Riding high on the turnaround story of the country’s once-ailing train system, Railways Minister Lalu Prasad finds himself in a bind days before he presents his fourth budget. Should he further privatise the Railways and compromise his commitment to social justice or provide more jobs to those who belong to the lowest strata of the society? The mammoth Indian Railways, which runs the world’s second-biggest network, employed 17 lakh people five years ago when it ran 11,000 trains. The train count has risen to about 15,000, but the number of employees has fallen to about 14 lakh since Lalu took over, said Shiv Gopal Mishra of the All India Railway Men Association (AIRF). He said the trend towards privatization threatened to destroy the system of accountability built up over decades. An estimated 1.8 lakh positions, including 22,000 reserved category jobs, are vacant in the railway. The ministry has surrendered hundreds of other jobs. “When there are n...
Lalu Yadav and the Indian Railways - Performance subsidizing populism
2008-02-26 23:52:00
The Economic Times reports Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has done it again. This year’s rail budget has cut fares and freight and announced 63 new trains, significant concessions for women, students and porters, ‘world-class’ railway stations and other amenities, besides a fancy IT initiative that includes smart cards for suburban Mumbai passengers. And yet, it has projected healthy financials and substantial investments to enhance the railways’ carrying capacity and productivity. And we are told its not all election rhetoric the railways’ report card in the current fiscal shows a sharp reduction in accidents, cash surplus of over Rs 25,000 crore, record return of 21% on capital, 31% increase in Plan spending and 15% rise in traffic earnings on the basis of just 8.6% rise in freight volumes. The operating ratio—operating expenditure as a proportion of revenues (lower this ratio, more efficient the railways)—is down to 76.3%. The operating ratio had climbed to uns...

Railways to go ahead with e-payment plan for freight service
2008-02-04 13:23:00
NEW DELHI: Aiming to reduce delays and bring transparency in the payment system, Railways are going ahead with the plan for e-payment for freight service. "We had launched a pilot project last year and this year, we are expanding it to the entire railway system," a senior official in the Ministry of Railways said. Freight, one of the major sources of income for Indian Railways, is collected at station where a customer books goods for transporting to another station through train. At present, freight collected from the customer is deposited to the local branch of the bank by Railways. As a result, there are delays in making payment because of the long procedures involved in the current transaction system, the official said, adding the e-payment system will reduce the delay to a large extent. Under the e-payment scheme, the required amount for freight is transferred from consignee's bank account within few seconds with a click of the button through terminal management system, a softw...

Indian Railways + Facebook = Cash cow!!
2008-02-04 08:44:00
Watblog, a guy I follow at twitter, just talked about Indian railways opening up their APIs so that anybody could access railway data and implement train reservation systems on their website. I am sure this will be at some sort of fee based system. More details at the link on the blog header. Now, imagine this. Better servers at the railway people's end (at this point of time, the "tatkal" time period of 0800 hrs always results in a whitescreen at their site, and I can never reserve an ad hoc ticket at peak hours, due to connectivity issues)And a facebook developer who develops an app so that I can reserve my train tickets via facebook itself. Cash cow, baby! Somebody read this post and start designing that app, already!
Railways at Bhopal
2008-02-03 18:31:00
Qudsia Begum started negotiating a railway through Bhopal and provided funds from her personal account as distinct from state funds for the construction of part of the railway. Sikandar... Bhopale is an attempt to tell the world that Bhopal existed, well before that deadly night between 2nd and 3rd of December 1984, the night of world's deadliest industrial accident. Bhopal is India's most livable city, not withstanding the still festering injustices of the Union Carbide tragedy. Bhopal is a stunning, attractive and laidback jewel in the heart of India. The city sprawls over seven hills, like Rome. There are many lakes, some of theme so large that you can't see all the way across and, for a moment, you imagine you're at the seashore.

Railways plans switch to CFL lamps, eyes Rs 130 cr savings
2008-01-30 13:51:00
MUMBAI: Q How many officials does it take to change all the light bulbs in the railways? A: Two. One to outsource the contract to a private company and the second to take a percentage of carbon credit units (CCU) generated from the changeover and add it to railway accounts. In a first of its kind initiative in India, the Indian Railways (IR) is set to replace incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) at all its residential quarters, production units and workshops across the country. A tender inviting bids from interested parties was issued by IR a few weeks ago. “Over the past few years, we had been talking of energy conservation on the traction side so we thought of replicating the same in lighting,” said a top official from the Railways’ energy management division. “Basically, 6.5 lakh households of IR will be given four CFLs each, free of cost in return of incandescent bulbs,” he added. Under this ‘CDM lighting’ project, the investor/bidder has to sup...

Branded Trains from Indian Railways
2007-10-04 04:52:00
In a move to earn more revenue, railway administration is introducing a new concept. The idea is to give brand names to trains for example Airtel Mangalore - Ernakulam Express. As part of the campaign railways will give whole of a particular train or some compartments for the advertisement of the company. The companies who are taking up these compartments can make all sorts of ads inside or outside the boggys. But the compartments should be converted back to normal before giving it back to the railways. Is'nt is such a great and innovative idea by Lalu and his boys? Not only that as far as the companies are conerned it will be great opportunity to reach the mass.

Trans Siberian and the Trans Mongolian Railways
2007-08-30 13:43:00
In July of 2007, my wife and I traveled for close to a month on a "Trans Siberian Railway" themed trip. It is a popular tourist route with some interesting sites along the way. It is also a quick way to get from Europe to the Far East. I am only going to talk about how I did this trip. There are a lot of options along the way including the final destination/starting point if you are starting in the east. What Is The Trans Siberian Railway? The Trans Siberian is a railway that was built from Moscow in the west to Vladivostok in the east. It takes around 6 days of straight train riding (which you can do if you want to). It is a great way to get across Russia and see a lot of stuff along the way. There are two options however. At the Russian city of Ulan Ude you can take the Trans Mongolian Railway which goes through Mongolia and on to Beijing, China. The second is to break off at Tarskaya, Russia and take the Trans Manchurian to go straight into China. You can stop at Harbin...
