One day a young man enters the store, glances at the clerk and glances at the loaves of bread behind the counter. Noticing the length of her skirt (or lack thereof ) and the location of the raisin bread, he has a brilliant idea. ‘I’d like some raisin bread please,’ the man says politely. The female clerk nods and climbs up a ladder to reach the raisin bread, which is located on the very top shelf. 2008-03-31 02:39:00 A few weeks ago, I needed to buy some more yeast. I decided to buy a jar of yeast, rather than the packets, which I usually buy. Seeing that the label said it was good in the fridge for 6 months after opening, I knew I was making a commitment to make more bread! So this past weekend I made my first cinnamon-raisin-swirl bread. The recipe I was used was top-notch - easy to follow, and delicious. I love the sweet brown sugar and spicy cinnamon. The recipe called for both golden raisins and dark ones; I had only golden so I also added pecans to the dough. WOW - so good! According to my husband, this makes great toast! The recipe made two loaves, so I gave one to friends and we froze half of the remaining one to enjoy later. What a treat! 2008-03-21 15:52:00 I’ve never been a huge fan of carrot cake, but Matt absolutely loves it – it’s what he gets for his birthday cake every year – so I decided to make some carrot cupcakes for his committee meeting the other day. I’ve eaten plenty of carrot cakes, and I’ve made carrot cake one or two times before, but I wasn’t too thrilled with the end result (I will admit that I am very picky about baked goods). I think my main problems with it are that it is frequently too dense, sweet, and/or oily, and it usually contains nuts and raisins, which makes the cake seem more muffin-like than cakey. Also, the frosting is almost always too sweet for my taste, but that’s usually the case with any frosting on any baked good I’ve ever eaten. To remedy these problems, I added lots of carrots to the batter to give it natural sweetness and moisture, thereby reducing the amount of oil I would need to use. This brioche recipe is different from mine I tried Monday last week. I followed the recipe with some modifications: Contrary to Dorie's recommendation I halved the Golden Brioche recipe and it worked fine. I used the seeds of one vanilla bean to flavour the pastry cream I whisked the cream in bain marie in a pan with a rounded bottom to prevent a thin layer of cooked egg yolks in the edges I omitted the cinnamon sugar for the filling I used a length of dental floss to cut the snails I liked the result and will definitively will bake the snails again. Thanks Peabody for chosing this recipe. But I was a little disappointed by the taste of the flambed rum raisins. There was not a hint of rum flavour left after baking. My list of upcoming recipes are getting too long and I'm losing my notes (just realised the kids are colouring my food pictures on my notes :P) So, sorry if I seem less 'chatty' or perhaps you are glad I am. *laughs*Anyway, this is one of the kid's favourites and mine too. I have over baked this but luckily it's only the outer layer that's a bit dry and crumbly. The rest was still nice.Ingredients: 5 Eggs 180 Sugar 200g Self Raising Flour, sifted 250g Butter, soften 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Essence 80g Raisin, soaked to soften and dried (omit to make butter cake) How to do it: Grease baking tin. Reheat oven at 170C Beat butter and sugar till creamy and light. Add egg one at a time and mix until well combined. Add flour and fold in slowly. Mix in vanilla essence and mix evenly. 2008-03-02 23:13:00 “A Raisin In The Sun”I watched Puff Daddy’s version of “A Raisin In The Sun”, a film first made in 1961 starring Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Ruby Dee and Louis Gossett Jr. on ABC the other night. Puff Daddy’s version was quite interesting, P. Diddy himself had a leading role, playing the troubled young man - who so badly wanted to be a success. I’d never seen Sean Combs act, so I was rather surprised to see him give such an inspired performance. Does his performance deserve an Oscar? This was one good film, I really enjoyed this movie.Now the movie itself was in the line of the “old negro spirituals”, no hope anywhere. But it ended like “Cinderella”. At any given minute during the last two days, you could have caught me with either a spatula or a cookie sheet in hand. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, no surprise since it is almost synonymous with food. I have no shortage of blessings and since I make a huge effort to be grateful on a daily basis, I don't get too into going around the table announcing my most cherished feelings of gratitude. Most of the time, that which I am truly grateful is extremely personal and I would rather share it with a very close friend or family member on a random day over a cup of tea and french Madeline's. But generally speaking, I'm with many others in celebrating this day and being grateful for family, friends and health. The next day, we had breakfast in the Raisin Bread Shop of the BCC. And of course, I bought their signature raisin bread and banana bread to take home.Don't miss out on their equally famous blueberry muffins among many other muffins. I'm sure their cakes are equally mouth-watering. In fact, the cake display case beckons to every customer who enters. But I had enough sugar for the morning. Also available in the bread shop are deli sausages and cheeses among many other products.I had wanted to stay an extra night but I had to rush to an evening meeting in Makati. can't eat just one: peanut butter raisin bars
2007-10-28 23:34:00 When I saw these squares on this blog, I wanted them in my belly, stat! But like all food porn, I knew I'd have to wait until I could make these myself. And boy, was it worth the wait. I wouldn't call these a bar cookie or a square, instead, they fit nicely in the brownie/blondie category. They reminded me of my most favorite stand-by brownie recipe in that everything is all mixed up in one pot. Chewy, dense and with a golden (almost flaky) top, these are a perfect snack. And I say snack for those of you who have restraint. Me, almost never. After one small square, I had to have another and another. I wasn't alone either....Cornelius kept heading back for seconds and thirds bits of peanut-buttery-raisiny-chocolat-e goodness. It's amazing that these lasted 4 days!I made a few changes to Lynn's recipe but loved the results. Mulhausen won't eat cinnamon raisin bagels because Pangbourn believes they are poisoned. While Mulhausen is not paranoid, he is gullible and insecure. Applesauce Raisin Spice Muffins
2007-09-27 22:23:00 2/3 unsweetened organic applesauce1/2 c. organic brown rice flour1/4 c. ground flax1 egg, beaten1 t. non-aluminum baking powder1 t. baking soda1/4 c. organic raisins2 T. honey or agave nectar1 T. organic sugar (or more agave)1 T. cinnamon5-6 whole cloves1 t. nutmegdash cayenne pepperMix everything in a large bowl until smooth. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a large muffin tin with nonstick spray. Pour the batter into the muffin tin, filling each hole about 1/3 full. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.These are great dense muffins that remind me of bran muffins. This is a great low fat dessert, snack, or breakfast; the applesauce replaces butter, shortening, and oil!
