Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship round three
2008-05-22 00:00:00
The third round of the 2008 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship will take crews to Wales for the first time this year for some classic mid-Wales stages during the Severn Valley Historic Rally (Saturday 31 May). With two very long stages making up the meat of the 45 stage miles, it's going to be a challenging event for another excellent BHRC field. Category 1 As usual, the oldest cars in category one (pre '68) will run first on the road and a double victory on the Robin Hood and Pirelli rallies has been the perfect start to the year for Patrick Watts and Elgan Davies in their Sunbeam Tiger. They'll be going all out for a hat-trick in Wales and will start as clear favourites. Heading the Porsche challenge to the rumbling Tiger will be Dessie Nutt and Geraldine McBride in their familiar Porsche 911, but the long fast straights in Radnor should give the Tiger crew a flying start to the rally. However, as well as chasing the Tiger, Nutt/McBride will be working har...

Click on the picture to enlarge The Kielder region proved up to its daunting reputation on round two of the 2008 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Pirelli Historic Rally on 18/19 April. While the unforgiving ditches caught out some of the leading contenders and mechanical dramas accounted for others, a tremendous performance from Darren Moon and John McNichol (Escort Mk2) netted category three spoils. Unfortunately, a major accident befell Jimmy McRae/Andy Richardson (Porsche 911RS) on the penultimate stage when battling for the category. In category one, Patrick Watts and Elgan Davies set a scorching pace in the Sunbeam Tiger to win the category and set times that put them up with the top six category two and three crews. Meanwhile, in category two, a fine run for Rupert Lomax/David Alcock (Escort Mk2) brought them a first BHRC victory on their debut event in the region. Overall, the event was well received by the 65-strong historic entry, with everyone...

The crews will tackle four stages on Friday evening and a further three stages on Saturday, starting and finishing with a ceremonial flourish in Carlisle city centre. Category 1 As usual, the oldest cars in category one (pre '68) will run first on the road and a resounding victory on the Robin Hood was just the start that Patrick Watts and Elgan Davies wanted in their Sunbeam Tiger. They'll be going all out to make it two wins from two starts on the Pirelli, as the Porsche 911 pack chase hard. Two former World Rally champions will grace the entry as over 90 cars line up for the Alternative Sign Centre Robin Hood Historic Forest Stages over the weekend of 8/9 March. It is a truly stunning entry for the opening round of the BHRC and comes very close to matching the record 100-car entry for the 2007 event. The field is packed with fabulous cars and drivers; historic stage rallying just gets better and better! Category 1 As usual, the oldest cars in category one (pre '68) will run first on the road and heading the field away will be Dessie Nutt and Geraldine McBride in their familiar Porsche 911. The BHRC, which starts on 8/9 March with the Robin Hood Historic Stages, currently comprises five gravel and three asphalt events in an eight-round programme. However, as planning for 2009 begins, the HRCR team is inviting expressions of interest from events that would like to be considered as a future round of the championship. Feedback from competitors is also welcomed and can be made by e-mail to classicchallenge (att) hrcr.co.uk "We have an excellent programme of events for 2008," said championship co-ordinator Simon Marks. Blomqvist, the 1979 World Champion, will contest the opening round of the championship in a Ford Escort Mk1 from David Sutton's Historic Motorsport team. Subject to funding, Blomqvist could then go on to contest a full BHRC season in the BDA-powered car. "We're taking a look at the British championship. Having done the Safari Classic at the end of last year, we fancied a bit quieter season," said Sutton. "We haven't got the funds in place yet for a full season. But we wanted to do the first event and if we can find the backing, we'll do a full campaign in the British Historic Rally Championship." HRCR Night Rally Championship: New look for 2008
2008-01-14 00:00:00
HRCR has announced two new initiatives that between them will bring a new expanded approach for those who venture out after dark. The championship format has been shaken up and the Maxsport Historic Rally Championship will now contain a mix of full-weekend, night and daytime events. This will remain open to cars from Categories 1, 2 and 3, although the first three overall awards - including the Maxsport Trophies are only open to cars from Category 1, ie pre-1968. Later cars compete for their own class awards and a significant trophy is expected for that too. Alongside this will be the HRCR Silver Jubilee Challenge that will enable competitors in cars of all categories to claim points for virtually any night-based road rally to which HRCR members are invited. The Maxsport Historic Rally Championship includes night, day and full-weekend events. These cover a wide seasonal and geographic spread and are tried and tested events of a high standard. Martin McCormack and Liam Moynihan have been announced as the second winners of the 'Shekhar Mehta Spirit of Rallying' award in recognition of their performance in the 2007 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship. The special 'spirit of the championship' award is a cast bronze Cheetah on a plinth and was given to the BHRC by Yvonne Mehta in memory of her late husband, one of the legends of rallying and a true ambassador for the sport. It is presented annually to a BHRC crew, selected by a panel of judges at the end of each season. The young Irish crew arrived in the BHRC in March 2007 and quickly proved their tremendous pace, while showing a truly sporting attitude to the ups and downs of rallying. They won the Pirelli Historic Rally on their first experience of the Kielder stages and, despite suffering a major engine failure on the Isle of Man in July, re-grouped and came back stronger than ever to win the final round of the championship, the Trackrod Historic ...

Click on the picture to enlarge Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship Talbot Sunbeam crew Richard Perry and Clive Townend have been confirmed as winners of the special award for the best non-Escort crew in category 3 of the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship. Category 3, for cars from 1975 to 1981, is dominated by Ford Escort Mk2s, so to recognise and encourage crews in other cars, the HRCR Best Non-Escort Award is presented to the highest scoring crew in anything other than an Escort. Perry, from Market Drayton in Shropshire, ran his Talbot under the name of 'Team Shoestring' and sealed the award with a strong finish on the final round, the Trackrod Historic Cup on 6 October. "We've been flat out a lot of the time," said Perry at the end of the high-speed Yorkshire event. Amendment to 2008 British Historic Rally Championship calendar

2008 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship" > One amended date has been confirmed to the calendar previously announced for the 2008 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship. To avoid a date clash with the Brecon Jazz Festival, the date for the Harry Flatters Rally has been brought forward one week and will now run on 2/3 August. The Jazz Festival uses the same venue as the rally headquarters and fills all available hotel rooms in the region, so the date move for the Harry Flatters is unavoidable. British Historic Rally Championship: B2 going down to the wire
2007-10-07 00:00:00
British Historic Rally Championship" > Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship The season-long battle for class B2 in the BHRC will be resolved in Yorkshire on Saturday (6 October) when Terry Cree/Richard Shores battle with Clive King/Bob Ward for the honour of being the best Mini crew in the 2007 championship. Heading for the Trackrod, Cree/Shores lead King/Bob Ward by 20 points, but with dropped scores to consider, it is very close and the crews effectively start level as Cree already has six scores, while King only has five. "B2 is going to be the class to watch, it's going to be all-out," says King. "I've spoken to Terry and it should be a good battle. It's his local event and I've only been there twice. We'll have to see what happens on the first stage!" So, the title will go to whichever crew finishes ahead on the Yorkshire event, though if neither finish then Cree will be champion. Adding depth to the B2 entry will be more Minis for Graeme Godfrey/Ric...

"The car ran faultlessly and I managed to improve my times throughout the day, finishing 22nd overall." He now hopes to tackle the Plains Rally before joining the BHRC for the final round, the Trackrod in early October. News Adrian Seabridge arrived at Carlisle in his superbly refettled Sunbeam Lotus, rebuilt around a new Jim Little shell. Unfortunately, his rally was very short-lived as a piece of wood wedged against the diff and pulled a brake pipe out within the opening mile of the first stage. "I'm pleased with the car," said Adrian despite the disappointment. "It rode the bumps better on the little bit of stage we did." A day's testing is planned before the Severn Valley. Mark Creswell gave his Vauxhall Chevette HSR its rallying debut, having acquired the car from Gary Midwinter. It...

"In the very short section between the finish of stage one and the start of the next stage the temperature crept up as we stopped and started in the queue. We got to the line and she wouldn't pull away, it stalled and she refused to start. Event over." After time to cool down, all was well and the car behaved until the same situation developed on the second run through Clipstone. It took a minute to do...
