Random Thoughts From the Chicago Sports Scene
2009-10-11 22:28:00
Once in a awhile I like to look at some of the happenings in the sports world rather than just concentrating a blog post on just one sport. So here are some thoughts and questions that I have been observing and wondering about for a while.Did you know that the over/under total of wins for the Bears in Las Vegas when the season began was 8 1/2? You have to think that the large numbers of Chicagoans who travel to Vegas must have put some serious money down on the over. The Bears look pretty solid and with Jay Cutler at the controls it would take a real collapse to not win at least 9 games. The total bet in Vegas...
Not Proud to be Gay
2009-09-19 01:08:00
Given the attempts by many on the left to discredit opponents of Obamacare by tarring them as racists, it does seem so many people are so fixated on race that they assume anyone objecting to the policies of a black politicians must needs be racist.  And yet, as America moves away from the ugly legacy ...
Sex, Scandal and ACORN
2009-09-17 22:54:00
Would the House have joined the Senate today in voting to deny ACORN federal funding if James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles had conducted a different, less prurient kind of “sting” operation, posing not as pimp and prostitute, but instead as a deadbeat Dad and his new wife, trying to get help buying a home, despite ...
Presumptuous of President to Push Health Care Without a Plan?
2009-09-17 20:30:00
Is it just me, or maybe this notion is just my expression of an idea that has been cropping up in the various blogs I read and news/opinion sites I frequent? Does it strike other people as presumptuous that with all his pontificating on health care,* the President still hasn’t come forward with a particular plan ...
Has Obama ever persuaded people to support his policies?
2009-09-09 22:15:00
As the President prepares to make another pitch for his health care overhaul as the American people turn against his statist approach, Jim Geraghty wonders if Obama has ever persuaded Americans to change their minds and support his liberal policies: There’s a rather glaring problem with public expressions that “this is the moment for Obama to ...
Had Rightosphere Not Raised such a RuckusWould Obama?s Speech to Schoolkids
2009-09-08 02:18:00
Michelle says it’s “not the speech, it?s the subtext.“ And I wonder if I would have seen the uproar in the rightosphere as nothing more than a tempest in a teapot were it not for the preparatory materials the Department of Education provided exhorting teachers to have students, ?Write letters to themselves about what they can do ...
Is this what they call Oil for Blood?
2009-08-30 07:58:00
LOCKERBIE BOMBER ?set free for oil.? UPDATE from Bruce (GayPatriot): So it is now clear that UK PM Gordon Brown lied. The British government decided it was ?in the overwhelming interests of the United Kingdom? to make Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber, eligible for return to Libya, leaked ministerial letters reveal. Gordon Brown?s government made the decision ...
?I can?t blog on everything.?
2009-08-30 07:18:00
If I had a moment and were not on vacation, I’d find the post I wrote recently where I noted that one of the most frequent criticisms I receive is that I don’t address issues others bloggers are addressing. Look, there are so many things I want to blog about.  In my various notebooks, I have ...

2009-08-29 08:42:00
One of the things I love about driving cross country, particularly when I traverse the beautiful empty spaces of the American West, is the opportunity let me mind wander.   I listen to books on CD, then sometimes pause the narrative to let my mind wander.  This time, I brought along a digital recorder so ...
Much Easier to be a Blogger in Opposition
2009-08-25 23:14:00
One of the things I’ve discovered contrasting the past seven months to my first four years blogging is that it’s much easier to blog in opposition to the party in power than in support of the incumbent Administration (especially when you’re a small government-type defending a President named Bush). Simply put, political leaders don’t live up ...
Is Obama?s Wee-Wee Moment a Defining One?
2009-08-22 21:40:00
While others have made much of the President’s use of the term, “wee-weed” up in the clip below, what struck me more than anything was how Mr. Obama has personalized the issue, as if it’s all about him winning. (H/t Michelle). Basically, this shows that he is not particularly good on defense. No wonder he references Sarah ...

Does the term, ?Heterosexist,? Sound a Tad too PC?
2009-08-21 01:30:00
Just received an e-mail promoting something called the 2009 Anti-Heterosexism Conference to be held this November in West Palm Beach, Florida.  My first thought was that this was some kind of spoof, but then I looked at their agenda and saw that it was not. While some of the language describing the conference sounds like PC ...
How Obama Lost the Chance to Unite the Nation
2009-08-06 01:08:00
As I may flesh this notion out in a further post, I’m including it in the “Random Thoughts” category. After reading the news and blogs last night and this morning in my Kettleman City hotel (due a late start last night from San Francisco (allowing me to spend more time with my Mom & nephew) and ...
Why Obama Won?t Release his Birth Certificate
2009-08-04 04:40:00
He wants to keep the issue alive as a distraction from his agenda. The better to smear Republicans.

2009-07-30 20:52:00
Barack Obama has done so well since he first came to national attention (with his speech to the 2004 Democratic National Convention) in large measure because of the fawning treatment he has received from the news media.  They have soft-pedaled stories of his past association with a rogue’s gallery of unsavory characters.  They all but ...
Do Some of the Left Just ?Need? to Feel Outraged?
2009-07-25 00:30:00
We’ve all had those days when, to quote a Styx song: The days you hardly make it through You swear that there’s a curse on you And nothing seems to fit And things won’t go your way You know you’ve had enough As per the song, most of us might rightfully cry out, “Why me?” But, if you’re a Ma’am ...
The relief you feel when the ticket is on someone else?s car
2009-07-24 10:04:00
Because of the heat yesterday, I found it difficult to concentrate on much of anything, perhaps becuse I got struck in traffic on my way to meet a friend for lunch.  And the heat drained me.  I may blog about the lunch as it was with a good friend of mind who happened to be ...
How Rove-Hatred Makes My Point about Meanness of Many Leftists
2009-07-22 02:54:00
Sometimes when commenting our posts, our critics ignore our points to launch into diatribes against Republicans.  Such diatribes are particularly delicious when the reader/commenter attaches his criticism to posts where we fault the Democrats for being mean-spirited.  Instead of addresing our points, our critics make our points. In response to my post wondering if so many ...
Life?s Little Ironies
2009-07-22 02:30:00
Weird how on the day I resolve to return to a past pattern of balancing my dissertation work and my blogging, I have trouble sleeping (for the first time in a long while), end up sleeping through the alarm, waking up way late and delaying my planned productivity. . . hence not blogging until late ...
Does the President Ever Smile When He Speaks?
2009-07-17 02:27:00
Perhaps, it was the juxtaposition of reading Daniel Henniger’s essay pondering the “point and purpose of the President’s orations” while watching the President’s speech to the NAACP on CNN as I was doing my cardio just moments ago that this thought returned to me. Obama doesn’t seem to smile when he speaks or even to look ...
When Will Hillary Resign?
2009-07-16 00:30:00
Shortly before Hillary Clinton took office as the nation’s sixty-seventh Secretary of State, I asked, “Could Hillary be a great Secretary of State?“ It seems, however, that the man who appointed her is doing everything possible to make sure we answer that question in the negative.  He has marginalized her as few (if any) of his ...
My new desk lamp & its environmentally friendly bulb
2009-07-15 23:01:00
My new desk lamp came equipped with one of those new supposedly environmentally-friendly light bulbs, you know the fluorescent kind that will be mandated in a few years. Well, maybe they may be environmentally friendly, but they’re not eye-friendly. It creates an odd glare which makes it more challenging to read my computer ...

2009-07-15 10:30:00
I have this thought every now and again when I “friend” someone on Facebook who doesn’t know about my politics.  Given the circles in which I have traveled over the years, it seems the better part of the people I have met are to the left of the political center.  Now, many of these people ...
Ah! the benefits of summer Supreme Court confirmation hearings(not all that
2009-07-15 09:07:00
No wonder Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy scheduled the Sotomayor confirmation hearings for the middle of the summer when fewer Americans are focused on the news and thus less likely to follow the debate over her nomination.   With fewer people following the hearings, there will be a smaller pool of people who might object ...

OBAMA AT ALL-STAR GAME: ?We?re Out Of Money.“
Does the President Realize. . .
2009-07-14 23:42:00
. . . that government does not create wealth nor does it foster medical innovation (or any kind of innovation for that matter) as readily and efficiently as does the private sector?
Democrats Keep Running Against ?Last Eight Years?
2009-07-14 22:46:00
After reading a print-out of Claudia Rosett’s recent Forbes essay, “The Bear Scare,” I scribbled a note in the margin: Sense of Obama’s reading of history as excluding American accomplishments . . . whole notion of reset button based on simplistic assumption that Bush’s entire policy was bad, [so he seeks] to define himself not so ...
A few Random Thoughts Posts
2009-07-14 22:04:00
Maybe it’s the summer, maybe it’s the conversations I’ve been having of late, maybe it’s the time I’ve been spending helping out at Outfest, maybe it’s my renewed focus on my dissertation, but I expect to be doing a number of “Random Thoughts” type of post in the next few days. . . . So, if ...
A thought on titling blog posts
2009-07-14 02:30:00
Last night, ever eager to provide something for you, our loyal readers, to peruse as you begin your day, I organized an idea I’d been considering (and expounding on in conversations with friends) on why the President won’t be able to get away with Bush-bashing for much longer.  As long as he’s seen as the ...
Blaming Bush (& GOP) won?t help Obama recoup lost popularity
2009-07-13 11:56:00
It seems that hatred of George W. Bush has become such an article of faith among Democrats that they can’t let a day go by without criticizing the former President for all manner of ills, from wrecking the economy to violating the law in order to keep the American people safe (to name just two ...
Do Palin Haters ?Need? to Dismiss this Good Woman?s QualitiesBecause They R
2009-07-09 10:27:00
One of the reasons many Republicans and conservatives (and a good number of others) have warmed to the outgoing Governor of Alaska is that she has what many of our political leaders have lacked for the past twenty years, a natural charm and presence. She, like the Gipper, captures our attention merely by entering ...
Is Palin-Hatred a Reflection of Some Gay Men?s Misogyny?
2009-07-08 09:24:00
Every now again, I have a brainstorm, an idea which just comes to me and it seems brilliant at the time.  If it comes to me when I’m driving, I try to remember it so I can scribble it down when I stop.  Occasionally by the time I stop, I find that the idea has ...

2009-07-04 08:45:00
In the past month or so, as polls have shown increased public dissatisfaction with President Obama’s policies, revealing that the American people have a predilection for the small government ideas the Republican Party ostensibly champions.  I say “ostensibly” because in the past few years (as many have noted), the GOP has lost sight of its ...
On gender difference & political correctness
2009-07-01 21:18:00
I’m ambivalent about gay marriage in part because, in studying the history of the institution, we learn it is defined by gender difference.  Up until the 1990s, those cultures which have recognized same-sex unions either called  them something different than marriage or, if they did call them marriage, required one partner to live in the ...
On Wearing Green for Iran
2009-06-22 00:08:00
On Friday night in synagogue, I approached a left-of-center friend of mine, like me, wearing a green shirt.  I asked if she were wearing that color “for the right reason.”  Indeed, she was, replying that this was one issue, like Darfur, where conservatives and liberals were in agreement. While I would dare say there are few ...
Does Obama Care About the Gays?
2009-06-21 02:14:00
Welcome Instapundit Readers! From the perspective of your humble correspondent, the two biggest stories in the blogosphere this past week have been the ongoing unrest in Iran and the Obama Administration’s relationship with the gay community. Health care has also been an emergent issue and will likely become a focus of next week’s news cycle, ...
Eight pitchers = one win and other random thoughts
2009-06-19 18:25:00
Eight pitchers = one win Can’t beat that. I’m usually against the Jays carrying this much organizational bullpen depth (trade for a bat is my logic) but it certainly came in handy yesterday. HR City A grand total of 11 combined HR by both teams in the past two games. That was fun Back on track I’ll admit, I ...
On the Private Lives of Public Figures
2009-06-16 00:14:00
I just learned that quite recently a detail of the private life of a prominent gay person (very likely not a Republican) was made public.  I had always thought it was primarily for political reasons that such things were exposed.  But, I guess people’s prurient obsessions transcend politics. It does seem that in this internet age ...
9-23-37: Thoughts on Memory
2009-06-10 09:36:00
Perhaps, it happened because in hitting on an idea for a new screenplay, my creative mind had come alive, pushing aside everyday details. On Monday, after working out, while spinning the dial on my lock, I could no longer remember the combination.  When I had stopped at 27, I knew that wasn’t the second number, but ...

2009-06-03 07:24:00
It appears President Obama has to step up his reading pace if he wants to beat his predecessor in one particular measure: how many books a president can polish off a year.
Two Thoughts on Unrelated Topics
2009-06-01 20:30:00
Due to a number of obligations, I may not be able to blog until later in the day (as in early evening GayPatriot blog time), but before I get to other pressing matters, wanted to throw out two thoughts on unrelated topics. First, under what authorization is the President spending taxpayer money to invest in/bailout GM?  ...
A Weekend (Almost) Devoid of Politics/Thoughts of Actors & Acting
2009-06-01 10:18:00
Perhaps, it’s because most of our readers know us only as guys who blog primarily about politics that they assume politics is all we do.  And sometimes, a lot of news relates to the things we blog about, it sometimes seems that way, to me at least. And yet, Bruce loves his dogs and is fascinated ...
Do A Greater Percentage of Republican Lawmakers Leave Washington than Do De
2009-06-01 09:33:00
I’d always admired former House Speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill for returning to Massachusetts after he stepped down as Speaker of the House.  That move showed that he saw himself as serving the people who first elected to Congress rather than as a part of a permanent Washington establishment.  While an accomplished politicians, politics was ...
Reflections from a Yard Sale
2009-05-31 09:28:00
Perhaps, it comes from being a writer or perhaps it comes from my own nature, but I do perhaps reflect on experiences a bit overmuch. And have been accused of thinking too much in at least two, maybe three languages. But, there was something fascinating about yesterday’s yard sale, to me at least. This ...
What Price to Avoid Boredom?
2009-05-30 01:58:00
Oscar Wilde once wrote, “The cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.“ That idea came to mind Wednesday when, as my headache was beginning to ease up, I had to run a few errands.  I was at the Grove checking out prices and specs of a new Mac while buying a few ...
Of Headaches & Common Sense
2009-05-30 01:31:00
In my previous post, I mentioned “aggravations” I had experienced this past week.  That word seemed appropriate to encompass the frustrating process of going through my closets looking for stuff to sell and enduring a headache which slowed me down for the better part of Wednesday. And it was a headache I could have avoided.  Back ...
Thoughts about a Blue Jean Jacket:or, Continuing the House Cleaning
2009-05-29 10:50:00
When I first posted on my house cleaning yesterday early in the afternoon Pacific Time, I had intended to take only about an hour or so to go through my closets and cupboards so I could come up with some stuff to sell at my friend’s yard sale.  And just in case, you’re in LA, ...
Slow Blogging/House Cleaning
2009-05-28 22:52:00
One of my closest friends is organizing a yard sale for this Saturday and has invited some of her friends to participate.  Seeing that as an opportunity to clean out some of the clutter in my apartment, I started to go through my closets, cabinets and cupboards.  It was amazing how stuff accumulates. Within 30 minutes, ...
