Google Summer Of Code – India Ranks 2nd Among Accepted Applications
2011-05-23 07:57:00
Google summer of code, a Google initiative under which university students contribute (write code) to open source projects receives huge participation from all over the globe every year. In the 2011 edition of GSoC, Google received more than five and a half thousand applications out of which 1115 applications were accepted from 68 countries. India had 182 students whose applications were accepted under this program. The only country with higher number of successful applications was the United States with 191 students. GSoC is an annual program in which Google partners with organizations from the FOSS (free and open source software) community and offers projects to students. After reviewing all these applications it selects students and offers them a generous stipend ($5000 this year) upon completion of this project. It was started in 2005 and the idea for GSoC came directly from Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Mayank Singh, a student who will be doing a project this summer with the p...

Rating Rodriguez: How the outgoing prez ranks on key values
2011-05-11 14:00:00
CTA chief Richard Rodriguez today probably will participate in his final CTA board meeting as president. Next Monday, Rahm Emanuel will be sworn in as Chicago's new mayor, and the mayor-elect already has selected his entire "cabinet," including Forrest Claypool as the CTA president. Claypool still needs to be approved by the CTA board and city council, but those are mere formalities.  So we bid adieu formally today to Rodriguez by rating his "star turn" at the CTA. On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being celestial, here's how Rich ranks on those key values printed on every Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus. Safe: 3 starsThe bad news: Thefts and robberies were up dramatically in 2010 vs....

Best Place to Watch College Football? Notre Dame ranks #2
2010-10-13 16:35:00
I love arguments like these. The latest issue of Sporting News ranks Notre Dame second best among "places to watch college football," as voted on by a panel of 70 former coaches, current coaches and broadcasters (including current Head Coach Brian Kelly and Lou Holtz, as well as Notre Dame alumnus Gerry DiNardo). If you've ever watched ESPN College Gamenight, you know there's nothing objective about Holtz's coverage of ND. But then again, if they had erected a statue and named a gate after me at their stadium, I'd be a media cheerleader too. It also helps that the greatest football movie of all-time, "Rudy" happens to also double as a 110 minute infomercial for the University and football...

What the $#&*? Chicago ranks 11th on angry city list
2010-07-22 23:57:00
(AP)Another day, another list about Chicago.  In the latest one, the city ranks 11th among 100 angry U.S. cities, according to a Men's Health poll released this week. (What do you mean angry! What the heck kind of list is this?)The ranking system on this one? Turns out the magazine factored in the percentage of men with high blood pressure, the FBI rates of aggravated assault and the Bureau of Labor Statistics' number of workplace deaths from assaults and other violence. Plus, it took into account traffic congestion data from the Texas Transportation Institute and speeding citations from the Governors Highway Safety Association.OK, just asking: How come New York doesn't even crack the top 50? FIFA Fever: India Ranks 3rd In FIFA Search Queries On Google
2010-06-10 05:19:00
So what if we Indians do not have a good enough Football squad to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, the huge fan following of Soccer in India has brought us a big laurel already! According to some recent data on search trends in India released by Google, India ranks 3rd among top 10 countries in the volume of search queries on Google pertaining to Soccer and FIFA World Cup 2010 (which is scheduled to kick-start in two days from today) . This puts India way ahead of European soccer nations in the list who are otherwise way better than the Indian soccer groups in the actual game. South Africa ranks First which is quite understood as they are the host nation for this year’s FIFA World Cup and Indonesia ranks 2nd. As a matter of fact, India did not even feature in the top 10 list of countries searching for Soccer / FIFA in 2009 Some of the search terms on Google related to FIFA whose results have recently become voluminous from India include: World Cup 2010 FIFA 2010 schedule FIFA...

India Ranks 3rd in Censoring & Removal Requests To Google – A Det
2010-04-23 05:13:00
Google’s always stood by their stance of “Don’t be Evil“, which apart from their policy on software, also covers basic human rights. The recent Google China controversy brought to light how the company did not mind losing a huge market just on moral grounds. Google, like any other company obviously receives requests to censor content. Unlike regimes like China, often the content censorship is essential, like child pornography or malicious content. Google also receives Data requests. There are quite a few stories where criminals have been tracked down using email / Google Earth and various other services. Around 5 days ago, Google put a reminder on its blog where it stood on the whole censorship of services in a long article titled “Controversial content and free expression on the web: a refresher“. A few salient points from the article. The number of Governments that censor content has grown from about 4 in 2002 to 40 today. (There’s a crac...

Illinois Ranks At Bottom of Best Business Climates in America
2010-03-23 02:38:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Illinois ranks a dismal 45th place in state rankings for the best business climates in the country according to a new study by the Institute for Legal Reform. The study finds Illinois trailing the rest of the country in legal fairness with a litigation climate that is bad for businesses. Two Illinois counties, Cook County and Madison County, were also found to be the most unfair litigation climate in the nation. In the press release, ILR says that Illinois is a "jackpot" state. "Home to two of the most notorious jackpot jurisdictions in America and known for imposing expansive liability, Illinois has rolled out an 'unwelcome mat' to business," said Lisa A. 2009-12-02 05:58:00
When it comes to internet search engines, Yahoo is not a company one might readily think of. It is easy to forget that the company still holds significant market share in the industry which is so mightily held by Google and where Microsoft has been creating a lot of noise with the Bing search engine. Based on search trends over the past eleven months, Yahoo has now relaunched its ‘Year in Review‘ site that will now take the visitors through events and people who made the biggest news over the past one year. Here are the list of the ten most searched keywords through 2009 Michael Jackson Twilight WWE Megan Fox Britney Spears Naruto American Idol Kim Kardashian NASCAR Runescape As Yahoo notes in their website, it is for the first time in five years that Britney Spears has failed to top its list. The list topper is not a surprise given the suddenness of Michael Jackson’s death and the rumors that followed which led to a huge spurt in the number of searches, so much...

Maine: Add Another to the ranks of trying for Marriage Equality
2009-04-30 19:39:00
Maine has leaped forward in the fight for equality. Their version of the bill has made it past the Senate in Maine, and should have little problems in the House. The Governor, as they seem prone to do, is non-committal on what he will do if the bill comes before him for his signature.A similar situation is happening in New Hampshire, which came this far through the process yesterday. As they say, "As Iowa goes, so goes the nation."I personally would like the to hurry up already. This surge in civil rights needs to catch like a wildfire in the Santa Anna area. If the momentum picks up then perhaps the Obama Administration will make this a higher priority, and then we can get married by or ON(!) our 20th Anniversary. How cool would that be?!So, that gives the Federal Government 3 years to get with the program. That should be more than enough time.Congrats Mainiacs! On a side, and additionally encouraging in Maine, they tried to make this a ballot issue and that was rejected. You ...

Toronto ranks more costly

Toronto now the second most expensive city in North America to live in and 54th internationally.Toronto has once again proven itself one of the most expensive North American cities to live in, sitting now just behind New York for tops in the continent, a noted report reveals. The annual U.K.-based Mercer's cost of living survey -- which looks at how expensive it is for a company to relocate employees -- shows that Toronto leap-frogged Los Angeles and Miami since last year.Moscow retained its position as the most expensive city for corporations world-wide, with Tokyo, London, Oslo and Seoul rounding out the top five. New York was the only North American city in the top 50, at 22nd overall.Toronto, which jumped 28 spots from last year to 54th overall, is the most expensive Canadian city for newcomers to live in, but not the only one shooting up Mercer's list.Vancouver went from 89th in 2007 to 64th this year, Calgary from 92nd to 66th and Montreal from 98th to 72nd.American cities l...

Lehigh Valley Bloggers Top The Ranks
2008-05-21 20:28:00
This post is a bit hypocritical considering that I've challenged BNN's ranking system in the past, but I thought it would be fun to point out a couple of the blogs topping the Influence Index.Blogging Dottie, who has pointed out in the past that she never makes the ranks, made her debut at #18. Dottie is holding her ground just one spot ahead of Molovinsky. Bernie is keeping his hold on jackass Tony Phyrillas who is still unethically and probably unfairly holding rank in the top 10, but I'm closing in on them both! The bloggers who hate me from the Lehigh Valley Political Blog were at #9 last week but have since been knocked from the ranks. They've been updating so I'm not sure how BNN figured their rank, but here's the disclaimer:"BlogNetNews' Blogosphere Influence Rating combines a variety of data sets to determine which blogs are most powerfully influencing the direction of the Pennsylvania political blogosphere. Ranks Of Tenants Keep Swelling Due To Foreclosures
2008-05-20 17:26:00
The massive number of foreclosures has indeed helped tenants to take their numbers higher and higher still. A study released on Wednesday, by the Harvard University’s Joint Center of Housing Studies, sets these facts to becoming the general order of the day. The study shows that U.S. renters have in fact increased by a massive one million during the past one year. This growth has taken place by four times the number from 2003 to 2006, taking the current figure to 35.1 million people! There has been a massive demand for rental properties as well recently. As prices rise, the competition gets higher and cruder. The rent rates have skyrocketed to a record $775 per month on average. Only about a one-third of the rental properties are single-family households. While the rest of the buildings are apartments, it is hard for foreclosed homeowners to find an appropriate and affordable home in the right kind of price range. According to the center’s senior scholar, William Apgar, this ten...

Picture this: You are a Filipino student in an international MBA class. Every one of your 54 classmates is from a different country. Your professor gave the class an assignment. You have to research on how well your country can create and maintain the competitiveness of businesses. He wanted you to know more about your country’s economic performance, government laws and practices, business policies and procedures, and infrastructure. After all the research papers were turned in, your professor ranked the 55 countries. He posted the rankings on the wall for everyone to see. Your American classmate came first with… “I can’t speak for them, of course, but I believe that most economists would accept the view that, while you sometimes can make a score by sheer luck, you can’t do it constantly, unless you’re willing to put the resources in.” — American economist Merton Miller, (May 15, 1923 - June 3, 2000), shared the Nobel Prize for his contributions to financial economic...
