Anxiety and Rational Thought
2008-10-21 22:30:00 Most of us realise how irrational our thinking is when we are anxious or stressed. Most of us that have suffered from any kind of anxiety or panic have had those vivid, stubborn, intrusive negative thoughts going through our head. In the cold light of day of course we know they are not true - if we had stayed in that supermarket check-out queue we would neither have had a heart attack nor died, and you've felt like you were fainting many times but have in fact never fainted. So, our automatic negative thoughts are complete rubbish. CBT to the rescue, we can simply identify them and replace them with something more positive and realistic. Except we can't. When we are in a heightened state of anxiety, identifying and replacing thoughts by recognising how irrational and untrue they are is almost impossible. CBT gets round this by suggesting thoughts are written down first, and then dealt with. This is a much better approach as the process of writing things down slows us down. Probl...

Element House - A Prefabricated Modern And Rational Housing.
2008-09-08 16:27:00 Element House - A Prefabricated Modern And Rational Housing.Element House - a prefabricated modern and rational housing type with high architectonical quality, designed by 70°N arkitektur in cooperation with Senja Elementer AS, located in Tromso, Norway. The focus of development in the concept is on interior flexibility with regard to the inhabitants' needs and economical situation. And the first model comes with eight variations, which includes 2 units of 30m each for rent. And presently the house has been made for three different projects with a total of 19 units. The wall elements of this prefabricated house are made indoor under controlled climatic conditions and then quickly put together on the building site. Religion is rational
2008-07-20 16:45:00 Many right-wing Jews, who are now deeply religious, started as atheists. I?m not even talking of those Russian Jews who have a typically Slavic urge for a higher idea. Zealous communists before, they became equally zealous believers now. Jewish patriots seek a firm ground for their ideology, thus Avraham Stern embraced Judaism. Those who didn?t, left ...

Tips Terhindar Dari "RATIONAL CRIME"
The (ir)Rational Atheist--More Vox Day
2008-03-30 09:07:00 Starting off chapter two, which is entitled “Defining Science,” is a brief description of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, unknown to most, but a troupe of traveling masochists (or so it seems) who represent his caricature of science. These little side stories can have more of an effect than the reader understands, though. Right off the bat, science is seen as either freakish or trivial due to the association with that particular experience of his. Because of this, I find it necessary to give you the actual definition of “science”: 1. a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws 2. systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation… 4. systematized knowledge in general. 5. knowledge, as of facts or principles; knowledge gained by systematic study. 6. a particular branch of knowledge. 7. skill, es...

RATIONAL APPROACHES to ILLNESS
2008-03-01 23:50:00 In dealing with any disease, the first step toward diagnosis is found in the health history and its interpretation. All facts of significance in the lifestyle of the individual up to the time of illness should be evaluated as possible contributors to the present problem. Allergies to drugs, foods, orenvironmental factors should also be evaluated in the face of present illness. Second, the careful analysis of the illness under question with all of its various symptoms, including other factors that have ensued from the first onset to the present need to be considered. Most diseases fit certain patterns. As organ systems and their disorders are discussed, these patterns will become obvious. Thus, the intelligent interpretation of a medical history provides one of the most valuable clues to understand illness and its proper diagnosis.Remember this one caution in the proper interpretation of health history. Accurate recall for the patient is very important. However, most sick individuals...

Rational reform
2008-02-28 01:27:00 The Reform report released a few days ago has elicited an interesting response from Zoe Gannon, writing for the 'democratic left' pressure group Compass. She argues not only against its suggestions (which were perfectly reasonable and caricatured shamefully by Gannon) but against some old punching bags - rational choice theory and 'neo-liberalism'. I will quote it at length, as the whole piece is worth referencing:In the depths of the Cold War economic theorists struggled to create reason in the madness. They sought a model to govern and understand the escalating threat of nuclear war; the answer they found was "game theory".Game theory is based on the perception that individuals will always behave in a rational, selfish, self interested way. Based on this view the Americans created an increasingly deadly arsenal of nuclear weapons ready to destroy Russia if it launched an attack in the hope that Russia would act in its own self interest; it would not attack as long as it believ...

Rational welfare
2008-02-04 18:51:00 As Super Tuesday is just around the corner, it is worth reading Daniel Koffler's piece on Comment is Free last month, where he claims Obama is a "left libertarian" candidate:Instead of recommending traditional welfare-state liberalism as a solvent for socioeconomic inequalities and dislocations, Goolsbee promotes programmes to essentially democratise the market, protecting and where possible expanding freedom of choice, while simultaneously creating rational, self-interested incentives for individuals to participate in solving collective problems. No wonder, then, that Obama's healthcare plan is specifically designed to give people good reason to buy in, without coercing them. Likewise, as George Will reported in a column from October, Goolsbee's proposal for reducing income inequality is to lower barriers to higher education, the primary factor in determining future earnings, and noticeably does not rely on state interventions in the market, which can succeed at equalising incom...

Newsflash: Jihad isn’t rational
2007-12-24 19:05:00 Glenn: THIS SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT: “If a nuclear war between Israel and Iran were to break out 16-20 million Iranians would lose their lives - as opposed to 200,000-800,000 Israelis, according to a report recently published by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.” Certainly does sound about right. But I caution against trusting in these numbers actually preventing Iran from doing exactly that… starting a war against Israel. That attitude is exactly the one Ron Paul exhibited with Russert yesterday… and it leaves aside the point that this is a rational argument against such an action on the part of Iran…. and fails utterly to take into account the idea that Jihad is anything but rational.

IBM Rational Modelling VS Microsoft Oslo Strategy
2007-12-17 05:47:00 Two recent product moves by IBM and Microsoft throw a spotlight on the different approaches they're taking to modeling in software development. Both moves make it likely that modeling--the process of visually capturing what a system will do, and how--will take on a more important role in the way companies build systems.IBM dominates the modeling field, based on its own experience and that of Rational Software, which it acquired in 2003. Rational set the standard for implementing Unified Modeling Language, a way to use symbols and syntax in models that can be shared across a broad suite of tools. The output of the model may then be used to generate code automatically.IBM last week said it's making its Rational tools more industry specific, starting with the defense, aerospace, and automotive sectors. Its new Rational Test RealTime tool supports standards tied to avionics and defense software testing, as well as a standard for embedded software in cars and trucks. That should drive ...

INTRODUCING The Rational Project Manager: A Thinking Teams Guide to Getting
2007-11-10 17:16:00 It was an eye opener for me. I am talking about a three-day intensive workshop I was a part of last week. It was focused on how to get things done easier, faster, and cheaper. In today’s increasingly complex business environment, work is done in the form of projects. To be profitable and successful, any organization must complete its projects on time and on budget, while also meeting its goals. As a result, the art of project management is vital to business. In the tradition of the phenomenal business bestseller "The Rational Manager", this comprehensive guide explores and explains the rationale, processes, and tools of successful project management. While The Rational Project Manager covers the nuts and bolts of the discipline, it also offers a unique concentration on the logic and thought processes necessary for successful project completion. Each person is different, and the work-shop provided a systematic approach to address each individual's input in relation to the bigger g...
What People Are Saying About "The Rational Project Manager"
2007-11-10 14:32:00 “Change for business today is not a spectator sport. Translating strategic vision into bottom-line results requires discipline, execution, and participation—a theme that resonates throughout The Rational Project Manager. Longman and Mullins present a commonsense approach to executing against opportunities that is grounded in logic and resourcefulness.”— George W. BuckleyChairman and Chief Executive Officer Brunswick Corporation“The Rational Project Manager provides much-needed insights and tools for leaders at all levels. The bane of any leader’s worklife is those initiatives that lack focus, engender poor decision making, and are misaligned with organizational culture and goals. Given the ambiguity, complexity, and change that are the new baseline assumptions in the workplace, The Rational Project Manager’s simple, flexible approach fills an important gap overlooked by most books on the subject.”— Steve SchlossVice President, Human ResourcesTime Inc.“The Rationa...

Myth of the rational agent
2007-10-24 06:13:00 Why doesn't laissez faire capitalism work? (At least that is what the vast majority of economics believe.) One reason - though not the only reason - is the erroneous assumption that people (called agents in econ-lingo) always acts rationally. According to this myth consumers are capable of and do always do what is best for them. Why this idea is flawed should be obvious.People are not always able to make optimal decisions. People may lack information, especially since making an informed decision can be a time-consuming science in many areas - making it outright impossible for consumer to make ideal decisions. Moreover, consumer are manipulated by advertising, simply act in a stupid manner people sometimes do (unless you believe that purchasing cocaine constitutes a wise choice, for example) or act in accordance with certain cultural norms that may prevent them from making an optimal decision. The decisions people make are influenced by advertising, sometimes irrational feelings and...
Terrorism as a Rational Act of Resistance
2007-10-21 22:55:00 I'm tired of hearing people say that suicide bombing and other such acts of terrorism are irrational. There are many ways to opine about suicide bombing: we can be morally opposed to the specific tactic, we can support it in theory but oppose it in practice, we can be opposed to the ideology behind it, we can support it in some circumstances and not others, we can armchair speculate about its effectiveness, etc. But we cannot really say that it is an irrational tactic. Resistance ranges from demonstrations, riots, general strikes, petitions, destruction of property or symbols, and "everyday forms of resistance" such as false compliance, theft, sabotage, foot dragging, popular discourse, etc. Acts of violent resistance are simply one other tactic, and potentially a powerful one, for the weak to influence the strong. As such, they are as rational as any other tactic. Irrational would mean there was no reason behind the act, that it was a senseless act of violence for no purpose. But ...

"Investment must be rational; If you don't understand it, don't do it." -
2007-10-15 18:37:00 My investment strategy has always been more Carrie Bradshaw ("I like my money where I can see it...in my closet") than Warren Buffet. News that Prada is aiming for an IPO next year though may make me dip my toes into the more traditional speculative options. After all, a popular investment theory seems to be that you should invest in what you know...one glance at my closet tells me I know Prada, all too well. In fact, prior purchases will now be categorized as "investment research". And going forward, I will add this to my justification process. Yes, the ever popular "cost per wear" theory will be joined by the "but this is helping my portfolio" theory. Which means that the grey, elbow-length, ribbed, knitted gloves that I have been oggling when I walk past the Prada store now seem to be something that even Warren may approve of.

Is Rational Thought Dead?
2007-09-26 18:20:00 I think the "dumbing" down of America is complete. The question is whether we will ever be able to return to a place in this nation where critical thought rules our decisions and opinions, rather than rumor, conjecture, or speculation?I am not sure if this will ever happen, but it kills me to hear so many people who are thought to be otherwise intelligent, be so woefully out of touch with America, the party they pledge allegiance too, and the political system that protects, defames, defends, demoralizes , enables, disables, and spies for and against them.Yes, our Constitutional system is the best, and even at it's best it's not perfect...But it would be closer to perfect if those that participated in it actually understood it, and used their brains to question both the system and those who are actively involved in it.Instead we have devolved into an impatient nation, wedded to the crawl. A nation of citizens to lazy to read a newspaper. A nation of drones glued to a TV and enthra...
Family Re-unification Immigration: A Rational Solution
2007-09-25 08:30:00 Updated September 25:There has been a lot of debate lately about family reunification immigration into the US. The recent US immigration bill sought to limit such immigration and to promote "skills-based" immigration instead. The problem is that we really do not need either form of immigration. There is no shortage of skills, in general, in the US, that needs to be addressed by massive immigration of skilled workers. In fact, all that this has done in the recent past is to devastate the wages of US workers. To their eternal shame, the US Left has supported this anti-worker abomination. The Left and the US Hispanic Lobby also opposed changing family reunification immigration.Family reunification immigration in the US is a great big mess. Suppose I move to the Philippines, or, say, anywhere else on Earth. Why should I have the God-given right to drag my mother, father, siblings, sister-in-law and niece with me, not to mention aunts, cousins, grown kids if I had them and whatnot?Yet thi...

Rational - izer
2007-09-05 07:58:00 So tonight I was at the gym with every intention of jogging. Friday night, I jogged 1 mile and walked 1 mile - it felt good, and wasn’t too challenging, so I’m sure I could jog two miles. Not to sound totally lame, but here’s the problem. I have the old version of the iPod shuffle. It doesn’t have a screen, so the music is just stored on there as one big list. Your choices are to leave it on shuffle, and go by the luck of the draw, or put it on continuous play, and it plays in order. It’s a 1 GB shuffle, and I have it full of songs, so playing them in order is kind of boring. BUT, my running music - Airborn Ranger cadences - is somewhere down in the middle. The rest of the music is pretty mellow with beats all over the place, which isn’t conducive to running at all. I tried for 30 minutes to click through each song using the FFWD button to find the cadences while I was on the treadmill tonight, and no luck. I’m not sure what the problem was,...

Then she would win, instead of us. The extent to which
