Professor Narendra Nayak: leading light of Indian rationalism
2011-09-22 17:02:00 Recently Narendra Nayak visited Oslo to attend the annual Humanists’ International Conference here. To his surprise, he was given the Distinuished Service to Humanism Award for exceptional contributions to the work of IHEU. On that occasion we also met and had valuable and interesting discussions, not least about the massive fraud and deception for which Sathya ...
V.P.B. Nair Told BBC Sai Baba Bedroom Killings Were ?Coldblooded Murder?
2011-01-06 11:49:00 In mid 2004, former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary, V.P.B. Nair spoke to the BBC about the official corruption that attended the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba's bedroom in June 1993. He said he intended to take steps to get the case re-opened. But has he done anything of the sort? It is an odd irony that exposure of these killings at Puttaparthi, and the subsequent profound suppression of investigation, have been effectively left up to two individuals gifted with cussed unstoppableness - the late Basava Premanand in India and Robert Priddy in Norway.
Gerald Moreno: No Real Sai Baba Devotee Could Applaud
2010-07-14 02:34:00 It would not be possible for any professional, nor indeed competent school students of clear thinking, to view as urbane, civil and non-defamatory the writings of the internet fanatic, stalker and extreme manipulator of internet rankings, Gerald Joe Moreno, of New Mexico, USA. In striking at prominent former devotee coordinators, he will even abuse the names of their family members. The independent British author of books and papers on religion and philosophy Kevin R.D. Shepherd writes:
Sathya Sai Baba Cultist Yaani Drucker Claims Spiritual Enlightenment
2010-05-28 23:27:00 It is instructive to see the cultic mind at work. Too often, it conceals itself. Yaani Drucker - the Sathya Sai Baba worshipper who publicly claims that she has now achieved Enlightenment and runs workshops that aim to put others on the same path - has again written to a former follower of Sathya Sai Baba. Throughout her many statements, she fails to realise that, as a public figure, her advice on how to deal with rape and other traumatic experience, is far from what those in crisis care regard as advisable. Yet again, in her email to Robert Priddy, her own extremely simplistic assumptions give her away. She is as careless in small matters as in great. In a relatively small matter, reminding one of her own assumption that I am a psychologist, she has just written to Robert Priddy, telling him that his Ph.D., excludes him from any expertise in commenting about matters of Enlightenment. The fact is, that Robert Priddy does not have a Ph.D., and it has been known for many decades to ...
Swami Nityananda Sex Scandal News Round Up
2010-05-24 22:08:00 The following is a quite brief but useful selection of Indian press articles. They suffice to give a sense of the unfolding of the Nityananda sex scandal saga. It is a great pity that Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors are not being held to public accountability. He is vastly more powerful and influential than Nityananda. It does India no credit, nationally or internationally, that she occasionally nets in a few minnows and not the tiger sharks. The enormous public reaction to the Nityananda case furnishes a picture that makes two issues extremely clear. The first is that blind faith in gurus down the milennia has been made a matter of wide public debate. The other is that new generations are beginning to throw off the shackles of the past. The question that remains is whether Indian shall ever become the great democracy that she could be. These factors are well brought out, if rather wordily, by the South Indian lawyer. See my note, and the video links, at:
Lawyer K.V.Dhananjay on Swami Nityananda Furore In India
2010-05-24 06:52:00 For those who appreciate a calm, rational discussion of issues relating to the Swami Nityananda sex case in India, the following interview of the South Indian lawyer K.V. Dhananjay is worth watching. India's vastly overloaded and deeply-flawed justice system is made most apparent. Difficulties in bringing any formal justice to Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors can be inferred from this discussion It is these grave difficulties which Sathya Sai Baba's de facto apologists, ever ready in violation of their guru's teachings against harsh words and other forms of attack, completely - and with great shallowness - would try to deny.
Nityananda, Sathya Sai Baba et al? Do Hindus Really Approve Sexual Immorali
2010-05-21 02:05:00 The court appearances of Swami Nityananda of India on charges of improper sexual behaviour towards a number of young women have made him the butt of outrage throughout India. Innumerable news articles, blogs, chatrooms, attest to the overwhelming abhorence of a very broad Hindu public for the types of sexual practices being referred to in the Nityananda court proceedings. In recent years, a top-ranking Hindu leader sent me an email (which can be verfied for bona fide media and scholars who may wish to check that what networked former Sathya Sa Baba devotees and other critics claim is true). See: Sathya Sai Baba: ?Considerable Concern? In Wider Hindu Community. This outstanding leader, recognized by a wide cross-section of Hindu organizations in his country, wrote: ?There is considerable concern among the Hindu Community, especially among the educated. It is very hard to get any action from the temples as they do not wish to cause difficulties with the Sathya Sai Baba groups. Peo...
More Testimony To Male Sexual Abuse By Sathya Sai Baba
2010-04-30 23:07:00 Below, Sebastian Engelbarts of The Netherlands relates his account of abuse experiences at the hands of Sathya Sai Baba. I need hardly point out that many testimonies have been shared with us with the request that they be kept confidential, and Robert Priddy and I (in our role of coordinators) have respected this. Others have stated that would only wish to make public their experiences in the context of investigation by, for example, a respected organization such as the BBC, Times of London, UNESCO, etc and/or by a court of law in a demoncratic country. I wish to add, as often, that for those who wish to avail themselves of legal or counseling services, we are happy to assist in obtaining those in the context of international best practice, with all the proper guarantees of accountability. In genuine circumstances of need, professionals in these areas can look to fee modification or waiver.
Nityananda Scandal. Police Seize Indicting Material. Why No Raids On Sathya
2010-04-25 23:34:00 Why are Indian authorities and the Indian media so selective in exposing errant religious figures in that country. Anyone who knows a wide cross-section of Indians is well aware of the great shame they feel for the corrupt institutions in their country? Non-resident Indians (NRI's) are freely able to read exposing investigations in major western media such as the BBC, Times of London, Daily Telegraph, Guardian, and newspapers in Europe, Canada, Australia, etc., but are prohibited from doing so in their own country. In short, why is Nityananda being investigated and not Sathya Sai Baba too. In short, someone far more powerful and influential than Nityananda, and who commands almost unimaginable wealth?
Is Heat Too Much For Swami Nityananda, Under Fire By Sex Abuse Allegations?
2010-04-02 13:30:00 To explode vast naivety based on blind, unquestioning faith, it may take a great many major exposures of powerful institutions, and the charismatic leaders often associated with them. Tainted godman quits all posts of ashram D.P Satish, CNN-IBN Posted on Mar 30, 2010 at 08:25 Bangalore: Tainted godman Swami Nityananda has decided to step down from all posts of his ashram to lead a life of spiritual seclusion. This, after a controversial CD surfaced three weeks ago, showing him in a compromising position with a Tamil film actress.
Sexual Abuse Priests. What?! The Pope Never Knew?
2010-03-28 01:37:00 Some international commentators opine that there is a net of terrible revelation closing in on Pope Benedict XVI. One revelation after another indicates that he has for many years known about the endemic sexual abuses, both of children and adults, happening within the Roman Catholic Church. And that he has, all along, failed with any probity to act. To the contrary, he has called, along, for secrecy. (I shall shortly turn to the mounting allegations of massive cover up of sexual abuse by the Boy Scout's of America) If any should think that the Vatican has not been for centuries, and is to this day, a heavy hitter in the murky world of realpolitik, they have not paused to read even the standard historical accounts.
Roman Catholics? Deep Concern At Pope?s Apology. But He Is Way Ahead Of Ind
2010-03-23 04:57:00 It is enormously instructive to watch the unfolding saga of papal apology for clergy sexual abuse. Large numbers of both Roman Catholics and others round the world have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Pope's apology. They say that it goes nowhere far enough, and does not address acute issues of crime and punishment.
U.S. State Department Named Sathya Sai Baba To BBC?s ?The Secret Swami?
2010-01-31 01:55:00 (The late) Glen Meloy and U.S. Citizens from an array of professions, and others including myself, made very carefully documented disclosures about allegations confronting Sathya Sai Baba. After former devotees, both in the U.S. and internationally, had spent a great deal of time and effort, the U.S. Department of State issued a Travel Warning to U.S. citizens traveling in Sai Baba's State, Andhra Pradesh, in South India. This was reflected in the 'Travel warning page and Consular information sheet, November 23, 2000'. (Note on Glen Meloy, loved and honored by many Sai devotees during his 26 years of service and devotion to Sai Baba, and by hundreds of former devotees whom he magnificently supported in the aftermath of Sathya Sai Baba's profound betrayal of faith, see: Glen Meloy (?Standing up for truth and goodness?) ? In Memoriam )
Questioning Sathya Sai Baba and His Global Cult Is Not A Smear Campaign
2010-01-29 23:23:00 I direct my readers' attention to Robert Priddy's latest post: Not a ?smear campaign? against Sathya Sai Baba Posted by robertpriddy on January 29, 2010 Former long-time leader of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization and retired academic from the University of Oslo, rightly says that there is:
On Leaving A Powerful Global Cult. Sathya Sai Baba Example (Part 3)
2010-01-27 23:39:00 This post continues On Leaving the Sathya Sai Baba Cult ? Ex Leaders and Rank-and-File and On Leaving A Powerful Global Cult. Sathya Sai Baba Example (Part 2) ----------------------------- I spoke by phone and corresponded with a number of former devotee sexual abuse professionals who knew of various cases at first hand. These included Shirley Pike and the late Elena Hartgering. They and other seasoned professional workers were in no doubt of the fact that Sathya Sai Baba had seriously sexually molested young males. As I listened to, or read, the written accounts of both primary and secondary witnesses, I was acutely aware that many of those giving the accounts did not even know each other. Once it was known I was investigating Sathya Sai Baba's matters, I went on to discover compelling accounts from sources well apart from Sathya Sai Baba circles. Having studied Epistemology, Logic and Methodology in my university Philosophy course, I was ever more aware that the required cri...
On Leaving A Powerful Global Cult. Sathya Sai Baba Example (Part 2)
2010-01-26 00:42:00 This article continues from: On Leaving the Sathya Sai Baba Cult ? Ex Leaders and Rank-and-File There was a feeling of truthfulness in the accounts of the authors, and I contacted them. They were - Terry Gallagher (who had resigned as head of the Sathya Sai Organization after rigorously investigating), Hans de Kraker (Australia, who for a number of years ran the Western Canteen at Puttaparthi), Jens Sethi (Germany), David Bailey (who had a rare closeness to Sathya Sai Baba, and an almost unprecedented plenipotentiary role), Hari Sampath (India), Glen Meloy and many others from the USA, such as Sharon Purcell (co-founder of the earliest Sathya Sai Baba center in the USA), Al Rahm (U.S.A., a major organization leader, and, in that country, head of the largest Sathya Sai Baba commune, and founder of the first Sai school). I contacted Britt-Marie (Bi-ma) Andén (former head of Swedish Sathya Sai Organization and a key figure Sathya Sai Baba Education in Human Values movement), and Con...
Dr Naresh Bhatia?s Testimony: Sathya Sai Baba Serial Sexual Abuser of Boys
2010-01-16 10:48:00 An Indian citizen, Dr Naresh K. Bhatia, publicly announced to a leading British newspaper, The Telegraph, that had for was a homosexual lover of Sai Baba. For many years Dr Bhatia was a prominent doctor (head of the Blood Bank at Puttaparthi and for six years head of the blood bank of the Sathya Sai Super Speciality hospital in Sathya Sai Baba?s vast medical establishment. He has since worked in a hospital in New Delhi. As well as being a very popular Sai Baba-appointed speaker, he wrote the widely read ?Dreams and Realities?, published by Leela Press, the US publisher of many books on Sai Baba
The Man Who Would Be ?King of Kings?

No Friend In Sight Song
2009-12-31 00:49:00 I haven't finished my holiday yet. A reader here or there may kindly deign to indulge me. A character in one of my pieces of writing is spring-stepping along forest floors, thinking that at least the local flora and fauna and swaying canopy of leaf and of cloud are all heeding. He is still in raggedy clothing but ridiculously happy with an inner glow that the wise of the world can't beat out of him, rather like a transformed Tom Waits (of which biographical word is that, by courtesy of a loving wife and three children he, likewise ridiculously, is his state these days). This wayfarer sings:
Basava Premanand Long Challenged Indian Governments To Come Clean On Sathya
2009-11-18 00:13:00 Among many attempts to awaken India to the great danger posed by chronic addiction to swamis, gurus and the like, the formost Indian rationalist B.Premanand tried to arouse government and public accountability. The odds he faced were utterly formidable. See my in memoriam tribute to Premanand, with whom I kept in touch over the years: Basava Premanand. Vale. A fighter for truth who lived what others preach One might have thought that the religious organizations, were they to have nothing to hide, would, in effect, have said something like this: Yes, we agree that horrible oppressions in the name of religion exist. We disagree with Premanand in regard to deism and disbelief. However, we are at one with him in wishing to stop exploitation, and we too will speak out very clearly, and do our best to ensure that you are not a voice crying in the wilderness.
Michelle Goldberg, US Author-Journalist, on Sathya Sai Baba (1)
2009-10-07 23:53:00 It is one of the gambits of pro Sathya Sai Baba activists like Indulal Shah (when he was active), Dr G.Venkataraman and his virtual counterpart Gerald Moreno, to portray highly reputed media journalists as sensationalist, and so on. In their offensive and denunciatory style, they fail to credit world leading media journalists, and the researchers as well, ...
Dr G. Venkataraman, Sathya Sai Baba?s Nuclear Boon Companion
2009-09-29 00:18:00 Robert Priddy is the former long-time head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway and a retired philosopher in the Social Sciences, University of Oslo. He has written insightfully on the extraordinary, often procrustean efforts of Sathya Sai Baba's head of Puttaparthi propaganda programs to rationalise his beliefs in Sathya Sai Baba. Though not a physical (actually, nuclear) scientist like Dr G. Venkataraman, he has an abiding interest in the sciences, and how a certain variety of scientists, in a great minority but with unfortunate influence far beyond their importance, falsely use science to buttress up their religious claims. The following information may be of particular value for journalistic and scholarly investigators, and also those institutions and agencies which the Sathya Sai cult in many countries attempts to influence - but without portraying their real agendas. For those who may like to hunt and peck among Priddy's writings on G. Venkataraman, I have excerpted fro...

?What about the miracles?? Response To One Drawn By Sathya Sai Baba
2009-09-06 03:53:00 Recently, a writer, who had witnessed inexplicable phenomena occurring at a Sai devotee venue, asked me: what about the (Sathya Sai Baba-related) miracles that are happening around the world? I responded in terms close to the following. I shall now include some relevant links: The question is fair. It is one that many who have left Sathya Sai Baba have pondered over. I have not seen any satisfactory explanation. Typically, there is a quality of manifestation that cannot be explained. In my view, these phenomena are far removed from phenomena of the Ouija board type, what to mention many another variety studied by parapsychologists. I think that neither devotee nor non-devotee explanations can do justice to phenomena about which, in the scientific, rational sense, we can say very little. There is that arresting statement in the philosopher Paul Wittgenstein's 'Tractatus': "Whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must be silent".
Brian D.Steel Updates References To Kevin R.D.Shepherd Writings
2009-08-25 03:25:00 Brian D.Steel, who has written in-depth on matters of Sathya Sai Baba-related bibliography, has just sent a note. I think that these references below can be read as a resource in company with my blog of yesterday: Kevin R.D. Shepherd Exposes Sathya Sai Baba Defender Gerald Moreno Brian Steel writes: I have just amended 2 articles to include references to 3 more of Kevin R.D. Shepherd's contributions, the latest from his splendid new website: http://www.kevinrdshepherd.info-
R.D. Shepherd Exposes Sathya Sai Baba Defender Gerald Moreno
2009-08-24 01:43:00 I refer to the independent British scholar Kevin R.D. Shepherd. His older website - http://citizeninitiative.com/ - cites academics of renown who have supported his work, such as the eminent British psychologist, Robert H.Thouless, (1894-1984)who wrote the best-selling "Straight and Crooked Thinking". Shepherd has just put online another website - www.kevinrdshepherd.info. It deals with topics on which he has written widely - philosophy, religion and psychology. Although Kevin Shepherd has never had affiliation with Sathya Sai Baba or his worldwide movement, nor friendship with former followers of Sathya Sai Baba, one section deals with Gerald 'Joe' Moreno, a highly aggressive, vituperative, defamatory pro Sathya Sai Baba defender, who works with assistance - they in the background - from prominents well as rank-and-file Sai Baba personnel in different parts of the world.
Sathya Sai Baba Man Gerald Moreno and Fact-Changing
2009-08-19 01:44:00 I direct my readers to an article just posted by Robert Priddy, retired academic of the University of Oslo and former head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway. He writes: ... "the pro-Sai extremist Joe Moreno claims that ?anti-Sai activists? withheld the transcript of the second part of a phone conversation which David Bailey had with Thomas Wiehe of Sweden. This is entirely untrue. Both parts of the phone conversation were transcribed from the start. Surely one of the worst cases of Internet libel is that of the Gerald 'Joe' Moreno. It is known that he cooperates with those around Sathya Sai Baba, both prominent and rank-and-file individuals. That Sai devotees would support one who so constantly uses language of a kind that Sai Baba's own discourses abundantly inveigh against more than suggests a desperation by many of his devotees to see their guru defended at any cost.
Sathya Sai Baba On Magnetism. Science or Sai-ence?
2009-08-12 02:39:00 Sathya Sai Baba is wildly at odds with some of the most basic scientific facts. His jumping between from physical to metaphysical notions, vague at best, are at grave odds with the physics being taught in his colleges and universities - and in any respectable classroom. In an early blog of mine in 2007 - A Great Deceiver ? Laughable But Still Dangerous - I wrote: "Sai Baba?s many scientist followers must have to block their ears or don magical-thinking hearing aids when he opines on matters scientific. Some of his pronouncements are comic, to be sure. But the smile disappears from one?s face when considering that Sai Baba?s devotees number many leaders in the top power echelons of politics, government, the sciences, the judiciary, diplomacy, industry, finance, the arts, medicine, and so on. He speaks, for example, of the nature of magnetism" ..... Since then, Sai Baba's critical commentator's have noted many past and current absurdities .....
Sathya Sai Baba?s Slurred Speech Due To Old Age. ?Eenadu? News Report
2009-08-02 12:26:00 That Sathya Sai Baba has made egregious historical and scientific blunders does not inspire confidence in his statements about pre-historical events. See my article: Huge Sai Baba Gaffes Various commentators have pointed to Sathya Sai Baba's 'turkey throat' and other signs of ageing in him, his episodes of falling over (one of which I have observed at quite close quarters along with many shocked observers at a Puttaparthi darshan), his uttering of inanities, his fits of crying, his walking round and round in circles, his blank stare and mask-like face, and so on.
Brian Steel On John Hislop?s 27 Years as Sathya Sai Baba?s Spokesman
2009-07-18 02:07:00 In my recent note Brian Steel On Sathya Sai Baba?s Credibility Gap. John Hislop Contributions, I drew attention to Brian Steel's scholarly article which deals with a seminal figure, Jack Hislop, in the spread of the Sathya Sai Baba movement: Sathya Sai Baba?s credibility gap: Contributions by John Hislop. (Brian Steel January 2009). Steel refers to the controversial Walter Cowan ?resurrection? in 1971, mentioning the refuting evidence presented by Professor Erlendur araldsson , B. Premanand, (the late) Professor Dale Beyerstein. For decades, these critical points met with no satisfactory explanations from the Sathya Sai Baba camp, and yet a great number of devotees rejoice in this so-called miracle of resurrection, as they do in so many 'miracles' of their guru, which, however, keep on being disproved by film footage of excellent provenance
BBC and Other Film Footage Shows India?s Top Guru Sathya Sai Baba Faking Mi
2009-06-10 23:16:00 The Sathya Sai Baba Organization has tried to stem a major exit from congregations via a role it internally refers to as 'the waverer's committee'. This wealthy and highly authoritarian organization, which seeks to infiltrate mainstream civic, religious, education and political venues, will not be so frank as to show the waverers the following videos. For the Sathya Sai Organizations recruiting drives in luxurious venues, See: ?Secret Swami? Cult Recruits At Prime Public Venues. For the dangers posed in its infiltration of unsuspecting communities, while concealing its agendas, and often from its own rank-and-file, See, Sathya Sai Baba Sect and Its Hidden Agendas. A Caution To truthfully go through these stark video revelations of Sathya Sai Baba cheating with his (so-called) miracles is to see why Sathya Sai Baba defenders like Dr G. Venkataraman and Gerald Moreno have raised profound smokescreens and engineered such markedly distorted 'pictures' of hundreds of former Sathy...
Sathya Sai Baba?s Failed Moon Miracle Under Heavy Cloud
2009-05-23 01:36:00 An article that has continued to gain many ‘hits’ long months after the posting at: http://barrypittard.wordpre-ss.com is: Sai Baba To Be Seen In Moon? But Where Was Moon? Sathya Sai Organization: World Communities Need To Treat This Sect Cautious
2009-04-30 00:10:00 Key leaders of the international Sathya Sai Organization, and their often unsuspecting and decent rank-and-file, would link up with you, smile happily with you, act in a manner that has every appearance of professional and ethical responsibility. They seek to enter into shared endeavours with you in regard to your schools, civic and religious organizations, sporting organizations, your municipal, state and central governments, etc. They do worthy works of social uplift, but in fact they have agendas that they keep from you salient information - that you have every right to know - under tight seals of prohibition as instructed by the guru and his core servitors.
Sathya Sai Baba Apologist Joe Moreno?s Random Personal Attack Style (1)
2009-04-15 00:49:00 In the writings of Sathya Sai Baba’s foremost apologists, it is very typical to attempt to make it appear as though Sai Baba critics live, somehow, in each other’s grey and homogenous pockets. Fortunately, there is a great deal that has been written by competent and rational commentators on Sathya Sai Baba and his worldwide sect, such as ...
Sathya Sai Baba?s Followers Face Alienation In Their Wider Communities

Sai Baba Cultists? Gull Wider Communities
2009-03-02 23:40:00 Michael Goldstein and Sai Baba's officials have turned their backs on large numbers to whom was owed, with no shadow of doubt, clear duty of care. He and they have been derelict. They, like their founder, have betrayed those who had served Sai Baba devotedly down many years, and had made great sacrifices in terms of service and other forms of contribution, including in cases of their life and health. Many leaders, including top ranking ones, have stood by devoid of conscience and decency, knowing full well that their co-workers actively defame, libel, harass and attack former devotees. In some cases, they have privately ensured that certain materials be made available.

Sathya Sai Fails To Save Satyam
2009-01-14 00:57:00 The massive Satyam corruption scandal engulfs India in a sad and chilling way somewhat remindful of WorldCom, Parmalat, and Enron. Sad, for example, because of the tens of thousands of talented workers whose future is under heavy cloud, and chilling because it reveals but a small part of the disordered ?backyard? that Sathya Sai Baba famously said he would first ?clean up? before transforming the rest of the world prior to quitting it circa AD 2022. And, again sadly, because such scandals can also obscure many instances of probity and quality of service.
