2008-10-28 12:43:00
And finally there was a get together of the Rawalpindi Chapter on 25th October 2008 at the Rendezvous Restaurant, Saddar, Rawalpindi. I walked in at around 8:15 as against 8.00 PM and found a number of course mates already in the open lawn of the restaurant, gossiping and welcoming anyone who dropped in. And soon it was all packed with some 47 of us.The get together was basically aimed at welcoming the three two-stars who have recently been posted to Pindi and in all we have five two stars, namely Bajwa, Solehria, Shahid Maqbool, Zaheer and Rashid. Of the recently retired one stars, we had Qayyum, Kahlon, AN Janjua (AA Janjua was absent), beside myself. Of the serving one stars we had the roaring Tariq Sher and Sheikh Tahir. The gossiping and photographing by me to add pictorials in the otherwise stale website of the course continued till a call for the dinner was made by the course secretary, Col Asif. The dinner was very lavish, tasty and everyone who wasn't watching his weight ha...

I come from a family with rightist sympathies but we all feel as if ourmother had died. She was a liberal force, a hope for a Pakistan overrun bymilitancy. Now there is a great vacuum. My fears are for Pakistan's unity. She went to the restive province ofBalochistan and handed her support to the people there. Whatever we were goingthrough, I felt as if she had the power to unite the provinces of Pakistan. Nowyou can already hear the separatist movement. Those voices are becoming stronger now that there is no national leader inPakistan. We were already in a downward spiral, heading towards extremism. Benazir Bhutto : Assassinated in Rawalpindi
2007-12-27 22:00:00
Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated in the port city of Rawalpindi. Her security people complained that the official protection was inadequate.A couple of days before her assassination this courageous woman, spoke out to condemn Musharraf for blocking democratic reform and being soft on extremism. Now she has been assassinated - an apparent victim of the extremism she accused Musharraf of enabling though his lack-of-action.Opposition leader, Nawaz Sharif, has gone further. He holds Musharraf responsible for the crime. If Sharif is suggesting that the president was directly implicated, he may be going too far. There were others who had little affection for Benazir Bhutto, including long time enemies who had served under Zia ul-Haq - also of course Al Qaeda. However it is entirely possible that the attack could have been facilitated, or that a blind eye could have been turned.Benazir Bhutto herself was under no illusions about where the threat to her life would come from. She wrot...
