Ray Bradbury: The Toynbee Convector
2008-04-13 02:03:00 Hot on the heels of having added The Toynbee Convector to my blogroll, I find that it’s a play on the title of a 1984 short story by Ray Bradbury, also called The Toynbee Convector. I’ve not read this particular Bradbury and the plot synopsis c/o Wikipedia is intriguing: … the protagonist is Craig Bennett Stiles, ...

[sf_fandom] Ray Bradbury Dies
2008-04-01 23:48:00 1462. No, not that one; this one (Via David Langford's Hugo-award winning Ansible): Ray Bradbury (1950-2008), UK fan and long-time stalwart of theBirmingham SF Group, died on 17 March -- about a week before his 58th birthday. He was a skilled conjuror and member of the Magic Circle whose occasional performances in fandom were much appreciated. Given the day, seeing that obit in the Ansible really had me going. It should go without saying that the Birmingham involved is the one in the UK, not the one in Alabama. Our own Bradbury, author of The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451 and Dandelion Wine and far too many nifty stories to count here, is still very much with us. Naturally, our thoughts go out to the family and loved ones of the other fellow (who died much too young). Tags: sf, sci-fi, sf fandom, obituaries Powered by Qumana

Ray Bradbury?s ?The Martian Chronicles? Inventively Come to Life in Chicago
2008-03-12 05:01:00 CHICAGO ? There was opportunity aplenty for director Kristina Schramm to miss this mark and leave theatergoers with acidic resentment. Tasked with the tall order of bringing to life Ray Bradbury?s classic anthology ?The Martian Chronicles,? though, she wasn?t bested by the oddity of the undertaking. Instead, the cast and crew of this Chicago production inventively transformed the Lincoln Square Theatre ? set squarely within a North Side church ? into Mars where Martians roamed with normalcy. Instead of E.T. descending upon Earth, though, earthlings in this twist of storytelling pervade the aboriginal Martians in their native land for exploration, dreams of dollar signs and even succulent hot dogs. Bradbury was used to reversing the traditional pendulum of the written word through the toils of his own path for fame, which he realized at the nascent age of 30. He churned out succinct vignettes when publishers kept requesting traditional novels. His novel approach, in fact, turned...

Ban books? Ban ideas, ban imagination, ban a future
2007-12-09 00:26:00 To ban a book is to ban an idea. Some ideas are good; some are bad. But good and bad are judgments each of us must be free to make ? and learn to make. At S&R ? as do so many people in diverse media everywhere ? we discuss ideas and express our opinions about them. We try to not suppress the ideas with which we disagree. Rather, we point out what we see as flaws and attempt to persuade others by providing better ideas. The current flap diverting our attention from more pressing matters involves “The Golden Compass,” a movie derived from the first book in a trilogy called ?His Dark Materials? written by Philip Pullman. His novels and the movie (review) have irritated the Catholic Church, which alleges a secularist agenda and fears the film would drive children toward Pullman’s books. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which has published a 23-page denunciation of the film, says: The Catholic League wants Christians to stay away from this movi...
