Thursday Game Thread; Cubs at Rays, 7:10 p.m. EDT/6:10 CT: Shoulder Watch
2008-06-19 16:30:00 Kind of looks like Zambrano, right? While all of us wait for MRI results on the Cubs' ace pitcher, the team will try to avoid the broom against Tampa Bay. I got to watch the game last night, and I am very glad I'm not a Rays fan. I couldn't look at that field (even in HD) for 81 games. And I'm still not convinced the Rays can keep up their good play over the course of the season (that lineup doesn't impress me much, and their pitching is young, can it hold up?), I'll give credit where credit's due, though-for now. Tampa Bay is no longer the butt of the A.L. East, or even the A.L. for that matter. Trying to salvage a game tonight is Sean Gallagher, or, as Julie calls him, "Superfudge." He hasn't been bad as a No. 5 guy, but you pretty much know what you're going to get with Gallagher right now, 5-6 innings, 6-7 hits and probably 3 runs allowed. Like I said, not bad for back of the rotation. Going up against him for Tampa is James Shields, one of the Rays' young arms. Shiel...
Wednesday Game Thread; Cubs at Rays, 7:10 p.m. EDT/6:10 CT: No more bunts
2008-06-18 16:00:00 Get us back on track, Big Z So, everyone will have to forgive me these next two days because I'm still a little scatterbrained from vacation. I really still don't know what's going on with the team besides Soriano's broken hand (dammit) and the fact that the Cubs still rule MLB. It's also very hard to wrap my head around the fact Jim Edmonds hit a game-tying HR in the 9th last week, but I saw video, so it must be true. Anyway, the Cubs look to even up against the Rays tonight after kind of a weird game last night that ended with a Reed Johnson bunt. If nothing else, it gave the Cubs blogosphere something to talk about until tonight's game. And Johnson's interesting choice of at-bat also helped out the crappy return of The WAGGLE, who decided to try something new by striking out twice. Big Z (8-2, 2.98) will take the mound for the Cubs. He looked somewhat recovered from that Gatorade battle (which was another thing humorous to follow in Spanish), giving up two runs in seven in...
Tuesday Night Game Thread: Cubs at Rays 6:10 CT/7:10 ET
2008-06-17 17:28:00 How can anyone not like the Cubs? Tonight the Cubs pack up their vericose veins and white shoes and head to Del Boca Vista to take on the perennial laughing stock Devil Rays. Only this year they aren't so funny. In fact, they're pretty damn good. The Cubs have the best record in baseball. Tampa has the SECOND best record in baseball. To combat this threat to our supremacy in the baseball universe, the Cubs have called up Matt Murton. Heh. Suck on that, Tampa. Tonight Ryan Dempster takes the mound against Scott Kazmir. I don't know about you guys, but anyone who spells the last name "Cashmere" as "Kazmir" looks like a commie pinko to me. My point is that if the Cubs win, America wins. Tonight's game is on Comcast (again). Lineups to come.

Rays winning with youth, pitching, defense
2008-06-10 13:28:00 First, they got the "Devil" out of 'em. Now they're beating the devil out of just about everybody else. The Tampa Bay (used to be Devil) Rays brought the third-best record in the American League to Anaheim Monday, and isn't that a switch. "I'm not going to sit here and lie to you, for us to be doing what we're doing, it's kind of surprised us a little bit too," reliever Dan Wheeler said during a recent series at Boston's Fenway Park. "But we believed there was something in there that we could go out and compete on any given day and put ourselves in a position to win."Tampa Bay has long provided a respite for other teams in the rugged American League East. Only once in its 10 years did it finish out of the cellar. But this season, the Rays have already spent more days in first place than in all their past combined. "You don't want to look up there and see your name at the bottom," Manager Joe Maddon said, gesturing to the standings listed at the base of the Green Monster. "We...

Fight night at Fenway Park; Rays-BoSox brawl in Beantown
2008-06-06 14:33:00 One out into the top of the fourth inning, Kevin Youkilis jogged out to right field. The Red Sox' third center fielder of the game, J.D. Drew, had taken his position. There had been one swollen and reddened nose (Coco Crisp's), three ejections, and Chris Carter's major league debut. Oh, and soon after, Manny Ramírez and Youkilis had to be separated in the dugout. It was just another quiet night at Fenway Park. Bad blood had been boiling from Wednesday night's confrontations between Crisp and Joe Maddon, Crisp and Jason Bartlett, Crisp and Akinori Iwamura. Sure enough, the second pitch to Crisp from Rays starter James Shields in the second inning last night struck the batter's upper right thigh. For a second, Crisp hesitated. He dropped his bat. Then he dropped his helmet and rushed the mound. Crisp's head snapped back, Matrix-style, as Shields swung and missed with a right. Crisp landed a punch. The benches then cleared, and in the center of it all, Crisp was at the...

A BRAWL, AN INJURY, A MANNY/YOUK FIGHT, A SWEEP...Red Sox 7 Rays 1
2008-06-06 11:47:00 Oh, what an eventful night at Fenway Park in Boston Thursday night. The bad blood between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox spilled over into a violent confrontation between the two rivals near the beginning of what would be a Red Sox victory and sweep. Coco Crisp was hit by Rays pitcher James Shields, who is a complete a**hole, and he promptly charged the mound, setting off an ugly brawl in which somebody could have gotten really hurt. Shields said he was just protecting his team by hitting Coco in the leg, an obvious retaliation from the night before. Crisp had this to say..."People were scratching like we're little girls, trying to scratch out my eyes," said Crisp, sporting several scratches around his eyes. "People were trying to pull my hair like little girls instead of punches. The fight is pretty much over, baseballwise. You want to come in late and get your little blows in, that's cool. It's all good, try to pull some hair."I'm not angry at anybody. There were so...
