Recall issued for high school students who read 'Soul on Ice'
2009-10-29 04:07:00 The American Association of High School Principals and Administrators has issued a recall on students who read the late Black Panther activist Eldridge Cleaver's Soul on Ice, a book that chronicled black rage in the 1960s. High school students who were assigned Soul on Ice from its publication in 1968 until Cleaver's repudiation of his Black Panther past in 1975 may contain a dormant ideology that could erupt at any time, according to Dante Van Cleave, an association spokesman....

2009-09-03 05:44:00 WARNING! This will be a loooooong narra'tion! It's just over a month now since I returned from our Euro'tion Tour. Seems almost a distant memory. Therefore, I felt it necessary to capture some of the highlights before they fall through the sieve that is my mind.We flew into London on Thursday 18th June for 4 nights. Dear and I caught a couple of shows over the weekend - Hairspray & Sister Act. Gay much? Most enjoyable, although we were a little disappointed that Sister Act did not contain any of the original songs from the film. Nevertheless, they were camp & catchy. We were ecstatic to hear about Saturday nights' headline act at Heaven... Sophie Ellis-Bextor, especially given her recent rise to Rancer fame with Heartbreak. But what a strange evening that turned out to be! Before heading to Heaven we went to GAY bar for drinks. Quite horrendous and overcrowded. Think downstairs Shift in the Video Bar. Before long we made our way to Heaven. Now, according to all reports, t...

Read to a Dog
2009-08-22 20:55:00 In the Weird has started to sound like a dour, angry old hippie, standing out on the porch of our dilapidated farmhouse, shaking our collective fists at the world's conservatives, capitalists, and anyone who happens to set foot on our damn lawn. That's not weird. That's just sad.So let's take a break from all this seriousness to tackle a topic that at the heart of our sister blog, Dragon's Library: youth literacy. Do you have a moment to discuss your dog's ability to appreciate literature? In the days of two working parents and too much video technology, beginning readers often don't have the motivation to practice reading, which is where therapy dogs come in.Yes. China Guest Blogger Sought. Must Read AND Understand WTO Rulings.
2009-08-13 07:38:00 Got an email today from a leading finance magazine asking me whether the World Trade Organization's (WTO) ruling today "against" China meant "piracy is now dead in China." I told him I would review it, figure out the answer to his question, then call him. WRONG. I read a few news articles on the ruling and they all said pretty much the same thing. They said the US won on some items and China won on others. They then proceeded to quote someone from some film organization stating this was a huge victory for US film companies and that was pretty much it. So I went to the WTO site and read the "findings and conclusions." and understood pretty much none of it. There were so many cites to various WTO provisions that I realized to understand the ruling would probably take days (I am not kidding) of review and analysis. I briefly checked out the full decision, but that is 491 pages. Hell, if I am going to read 491 pages without billing for it, I am going to read An Evil Cradling, ...

What's Happening With China Legal? Read Asia Legal Blog To Find Out.
2009-07-21 15:21:00 When I worked in BigLaw, I, along with most of the other associates at my mega-firm, could hardly wait for the next issue of American Lawyer Magazine to hit our law firm's library. That magazine did a pretty decent job keeping us informed of what was going on in the legal world, and even within our own firm. It would give ratings to working as an associate at the big firms, with a commentary. My friends and I would always try to get quoted, though always anonymously. One year we bet on who would get quoted. I won by saying that we associates were pretty well informed of firm goings-on because we would get so much coverage in the American Lawyer. Now, if you want to read law firm rumors, the best place is Above the Law, (which had my firm down for a merger with Baker & McKenzie!) but it does not carry much on Asia. Asia Legal Blog is written by a legal headhunting firm so it is not going to go off on a rumor, but it is a good and free source of goings on in the Asian legal...

These articles implied everything from "women are only coming for cute boy actors" to "women go to get laid, because as we all know, no women are into comics." None of these articles mentioned the many women and girls who draw, read or publish comics. Deb was musing about a "protest t-shirt" against invisibility of women in the comics industry and market. Venture Capital Beliefs & Views On Indian Internet Space - (Must Read F
2009-06-10 14:49:00 We had the good fortune of listening to a presentation by Ritesh Banglani from IDG Ventures India at the recently held Startup City event in Bangalore. He pointed out the assumptions and beliefs that their VC firm had on the Indian Internet space. We quite enjoyed the presentation and are sharing his points here. A must read for any internet entrepreneur looking to pitch to a VC. 1) Average monetization per user is 1$ - As a VC they believe that the average per user monetization per year is 1$. Hence they look for companies which can prove that they earn substantially higher per user revenues for them to be interested in investing in the startup. 2) Ad only models dont work - VC’s (IDG ventures in this case) firmly believe that business models online which are supported by purely advertising don’t work. Their assumption is based on the above point of 1$ per user which they feel is too low to support the scaling costs of an online startup with millions of users. 3) E- Co...
