I?m Putting $6,000 into this Recent IPO
2012-01-26 02:00:00 Investing in any recent initial public offering (IPO) carries one obvious risk: You may be buying as insiders and underwriters are getting set to sell. By federal law, these folks are "locked up," prevented from selling stock for 180 days after the IPO. When they can finally turn their pre-IPO stock into cash, they rarely hesitate. So as soon as Zipcar's (NYSE: ZIP) backers and founders could sell shares in mid-October, they didn't hesitate, unloading more than 3 million shares by year's end. As a result, an IPO that closed at $28 on its first day of trading last spring now trades below $15. That's a fresh opportunity for the rest of us, as Zipcar . . . → Read More: I’m Putting $6,000 into this Recent IPO

2011-11-18 19:00:00 Insiders and directors of LinkedIn (Nasdaq: LNKD) have to be pleased with how their stock has performed since going public in May. A solid 64% gain in the past six months (while the Nasdaq has shed 7%) makes it one of the best performing initial public offerings (IPOs) of 2011. But when the board of directors was recently giving a final check-off on third-quarter results, they spotted a potential problem looming on the calendar. In mid-November, the insiders who were "locked-up" and prevented from selling all of their pre-IPO stock got the green light as the 180-day restriction period expired. The Board had ample reason to worry. One of the reasons the stock has performed so . . . → Read More: Stay Away from These 12 Recent IPOs

With Cubs' Recent Struggles, Should Regime Change Be in the Offing?
2011-05-31 11:07:00 Memorial Day is supposed to be a day of celebration throughout Major League Baseball (judging by the bunting and those hideous caps they had the players wear anyway), but Monday at Wrigley Field was nothing short of a carnival of fools. The Cubs looked inept at the field, at the plate, and on the mound, and they were rocked by the lowly Houston Astros 12-6 in front of a sparse crowd for a national holiday. The game was just one of many recently that have Cubs fans scratching their heads. How could this team, which was supposed to come out of Spring Training with an emphasis on team play and fundamentals, look like the Washington Generals of the National League?...

2011-05-28 06:01:00 Photo by Jeremy Wrenn.I really wish I had some good excuses to make aside from "I've been busy" that I've not been writing in here, but that's pretty much the core of it. The project that was, back in December, looking to take up about a quarter of my time has almost gotten to be 8 hours day. Obviously, if I'm "billing out" 40 hours a week, I might well be considered employed at this point, although the dollars are not what they need to be as yet and there are no benefits. As I've noted, this has the very strong potential of moving over to a "real job" in the next month or so, so we'll see. Of course,...
Recent Callups Indicate Cubs Intend to Try and Stay Close in NL Central
2011-05-26 17:31:00 Can the Cubs replacements keep their team in the race until the starters return? There's an old 70's movie called "Breaking Away" where some local kids get the opportunity to race in the local university's big annual event, a bicycle race called the Little 500. Early in that race, the local kids, made up of one legitimately good cyclist and 3 ragtag companions who don't really expect to participate in the race. Early on, behind the ability of their best cyclist, the "team" shows the potential to give the college hotshots a run for their money -- until injury sets in. The starting cyclist gets hurt early on in the race and, instead of giving up, the team turns to the other members on the team, the ones who never...
Is Kareem Abdul Jabbars recent public cry for his own statue narcissistic?
2011-05-20 09:31:00 Is Kareem Abdul Jabbar a narcissist? The recent flap about the lack of a KAJ statue outside the {Laker} Center was raised by the towering ex baller himself. On the one hand the thought that first comes to mind is, the nerve of some guy to demand a statue of him be made and placed outside his old office. But a couple co-workers had their likeness erected and the poor man felt slighted. So he made his views known over the airwaves and placed his old employers at the middle of a public relations nightmare. Either they go with, and here is the crux of matter, the old retired employee just grumbled and complained and simply embarrassed himself, or they...

Recent Jobless Claims Report: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
2011-04-28 17:30:00 The good news is in today's jobless claims report is that the number of people still receiving benefits under regular State programs fell drastically to 68,000 in the week ending 4/16 to 3.64 million people. This is the lowest level since September, 2008. The bad news is that claims for unemployment benefits rose last week to 429,000, 25,000 higher than the anticipated seasonally adjusted figure of 404,000. This came as a surprise to many analysts who expected the figure to slip to 392,000. Economists say that the jobless claims figure that is under 400,000 indicates a steady growth in jobs, so it appears our economy may be headed for a slow down. What concerns analysts is...

Remembering: Richard Dent, Recent HOF Inductee
2011-02-15 00:27:00 When Richard Dent was drafted by the Bears in 1983 (8th round, 203th overall), once again it was my dear brother Tim who broke the news to me. I was just starting in retail management and was working "long" hours at the time. Honestly, the Bears were the least on my mind at that point following several failed seasons in the early eighties under HC Neal Armstrong. I was excited about Mike Ditka coming on board, and the McMahon draft choice (both in 1982), but instant success was not expected. In 1984, Dent began to grab "huge" headlines in just about every game. As I began to watch as many games as possible, I noticed that Dent was a huge factor...

Winter Meetings: Recent Rumors
2010-12-08 01:13:00 LOHO's Super-Secret Winter Meetings Bunker So far this evening for your speculating pleasure, we have the following rumors: The Rangers and Cubs are discussing a trade that would send Chris Davis and Darren O'Day to Chicago, according to Ed Price of AOL FanHouse (on Twitter). Davis, 24, has the makings of a slugger, but has struggled to realize his potential. He has 39 homers in 872 big league plate apperances, which projects to 25 or 30 over the course of a full season. Davis has a .248/.300/.459 line in parts of three major league seasons and he strikes out in 32% of his plate appearances. The Rangers claimed O'Day off of waivers from the Mets in 2009 and saw...

Get in on the Next Wave Sweeping the Banking Sector With These Recent IPOs
2010-10-28 08:09:00 From time to time, the banking sector will see a transformative innovation, such as the ATM or online banking. But it often takes time to get consumers to change their habits. Yet when it happens, the results can be a big money maker. This appears to be the case with the prepaid card market. The roots of this space go back to the late 1990s and the pioneers include a variety of risk-taking entrepreneurs. After much investment and trial and error, it looks like the prepaid card market is hitting an inflection point. Consider that a study from Mercator Advisory Group shows that the volume of transactions is expected to grow at a stunning +48.3% compound annual rate… . . . → Full Story: Get in on the Next Wave Sweeping the Banking Sector With These Recent IPOs

The Home Prices: Recent Report
2010-10-27 18:59:00 To stimulate economic growth, the Obama administration imposed a tax credit to act as an incentive to increase the level of real estate purchases, which gave $8000 to the first time home buyer. This gave much needed momentum to the housing industry, and many hoped that this would get the country back on track to economic recovery. In June of this year, this initiative expired, and along with it went the market’s ability to sustain this momentum. As shown by the recent reports on the industry, the housing market continues to struggle across major cities. According to the latest report released by Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller, based on the index of 20 major metropolitan areas, housing prices have fallen yet again this August. David M. Blitzer, index committee chairman at Standard & Poor’s expressed that the report was disappointing. Blitzer stated that generally, prices of homes declined in the month of August. Some cities on the other hand have seen slight...

Sarah Palin has a right to her opinions, but I could not disagree more. Everything the United States stands for and New York stands for is tolerance and openness, and I think it's a great message for the world that unlike in other places where they might actually ban people from wearing a burqua or they might actually keep people from building a building, that's not what America was founded on, nor is it what America should become."

The Orioles Recent Run; Stuffage
2010-08-13 11:57:00 The Orioles lost to the Indians, 4-1, last night; however, it’s been a very, very good run for the black and the orange during the past two weeks. If anyone ever thought the Orioles would have an 8-2 stretch during the season considering everything that happened before Buck Showalter came along, they should play the lottery.Despite the loss on Thursday, Kevin Millwood looked a lot better than he did in the past few starts this summer. Who knows if his improvement is based on Showalter’s influence, being re-energized, or just feeling better, but Millwood is finally pitching as most thought he would. The offense finally got tied down, but it looks like with a healthy Roberts, a streaking Pie, and a lineup that finally seems to have it’s bearings in order.During the Cleveland series, I was most impressed by Brad Bergesen’s effort on Wednesday. The kid threw a two-hitter, gave up one run and rewarded the Orioles’ faith in him. Much like Millwood, who knows if Beregesen’s run o...
