Seattle Mentioned on Forbes Regarding America?s Recession

We’re always looking to promote consumer confidence in our local real estate market. However, this season has been slower for real estate than previous years. Is there a telltale sign of economic recession to us?
2008-06-05 04:50:00
Yesterday I went across the Johor Bahru borders with my girlfriend and her family. We went in to pump a whole tank of petrol. For toyota Altis, we pump the best petrol V-Power at Shell at only about RM$76 (probably about $38+ in Singapore). In Singapore, for V-Power Shell, it probably cost S$100. I remember past few days, Malaysia had its regulation to restrict Singapore cars from coming in order to protect its oil resources, I suppose. It didn’t work as JB’s economy much depends on influx of Singaporean shoppers over at the other borders. They allow Singapore cars to come in few days after. Just after pumping petrol in the evening, Malaysia announced the news at 10pm to increase petrol price to 40%. What a relief! It reflects a fiscal move by the government to intervene in order to curb the oil price increase in the past few months. Coincidentally US Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke indicated more US interest hikes were unlikely and raised questions about oil’s ability t...

As Gas Prices Escalate, Worries About a Recession Turn Into Fears of Inflat
2008-06-02 19:30:00
As the post-Memorial Day hangover lingers, and $4 per gallon gasoline becomes a national reality, expect more and more daily energy prognostications. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) already is on record for $200-a-barrel oil. As you all know, our own Keith Fitz-Gerald - Money Morning?s investment director - has projected a crude-oil price of $225 a barrel. Do I hear $250? What about $5 a gallon gasoline by July 4th? Sometimes, these daily price gyrations take on lives of their own, but at the end of the day, the basic laws of supply and demand always work themselves out. The upcoming week?s hectic economic calendar…
Experts No Longer Predicting Recession
2008-06-01 16:19:00
A recession is defined as two consecutive periods of negative GDP growth. As the Federal Reserve has sliced interest rates, as the dollar has dropped significantly fueling exports, and as tax-rebate checks are likely to stimulate the economy, the GDP continues to see growth. The GDP rose 0.9 percent in the first quarter. It now looks like may not enter a recession despite a falling economy. This has not occurred since the government began tracking quarterly GDP in 1947.

Austin Area Real Estate: Recession Proof Market?
2008-05-29 00:00:00
We think many of our investors and clients should take a look at the article above. I have noticed that many people are taking a "wait and see" attitude about buying real estate in Austin, largely in part to the "mortgage meltdown" and national trends in real estate. Austins listing inventories are up as compared to this time last year. What does this mean? It is actually a great opportunity to buy Austin. The following is from the Austin Business Journal, May 7, 2008. Austin was named third on the Forbes.com list of the top 10 "Recession-Proof Cities" in the United States. To create the list, the magazine looked at the 50 largest U.S. metros, examining key measures, such as

Buffett sees "long, deep" U.S. recession by Reuters - snip:The United States is already in a recession and it will be longer as well as deeper than many people expect, U.S. investor Warren Buffett said in an interview published in German magazine Der Spiegel on Saturday. He said the United States was "already in recession" and added: "Perhaps not in the sense that economists would define it" with two consecutive quarters of negative growth. Recession unlikely if US economy gets through next two crucial months

By Anatole Kaletsky:This definition of recession is not just a matter of semantics. The broad-based and lasting nature of the economic decline is absolutely essential because a sector-specific or transitory slowdown is not sufficient to counteract the natural expansionary momentum of a capitalist economy. But surely the financial and housing crises in America are now so severe that there can be no

Recession-Proof Real Estate Markets?
2008-05-20 15:45:00
As I've been telling anyone who will listen over the past 8 months, some cities are not drowning in falling home prices and/or rising unemployment. The "mortgage meltdown" 2007 didn't crush the real estate market nationwide. Despite the national trends, several major markets are doing just fine. To identify the healthiest real estate markets, Forbes magazine recently examined the country's 50 largest metropolitan areas. The magazine studied key factors such as unemployment and job-growth data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, home price data from the National Association of REALTORS®, and information on gross metropolitan product growth provided by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. After all that research, what did they find? They were able to compile a list of 10 cities that Forbes sees as "practically recession-proof". They are listed below along with the percentage of growth for median-priced homes in the past year. Oklahoma City, Okla. M...

No recession for Europe.
2008-05-15 21:40:00
Today released numbers show good shape for European economies. Germany more than doubled estimations and grew 1.5% in first three months of 2008 (quarter on quarter). Non-seasonally (quarterly basis) GDP grew 1,8%.Another surprise is coming from France. Quarter on quarter growth by 0,6%. Great Britain up by 0,4%.Smaller European economies, Greece +1,1% and Austria +0,8%. But others shrank slightly. Portugal and Spain registered in the negative, -0,2% respectively -0,3%.And how about Central European emerging markets. Czech Republic quarter on quarter +0,9% but non-seasonally still nice growth by 5,4%. Slovakia non-seasonally slow down from 14,3% to 8,7%.http://stockweb.blogspot.c-om/atom.xml

I have serious doubts that the West will look anything like it does today in 60 years. I mean demographically it will be significantly reduced in size due to war. It’s not a tumor recession
2008-05-15 13:43:00
The misery index is now at 8. Democrats want to portray this as the worst economy since Herbert Hoover was president. Unfortunately, the economy is not cooperating. Unemployment dropped to 5.0% last month. And inflation is at 3%. Under the Misery Index, that’s pretty much the sign of a good economy. So says Don Surber. And he’s right. Hume piles on, last night: It appears that CNN has decided the U.S. is in a recession even though the economic data do not support that claim. On its Web site, CNN posted the exit poll results from Tuesday’s West Virginia primary which asked voters if and how the “recession” has affected their family. All the major television networks use the same exit poll questionnaire. And, while that generic survey asked voters, “Has the current recession or economic slowdown affected you and your family?” Other networks, including this one, used the term “economic slowdown” when reporting the results. A recession...

JPMorgan's CEO Says U.S. Recession is Just Now Beginning
2008-05-13 03:18:00
JPMorgan's CEO James Dimon stated Monday that he believes that even though the credit problems in the U.S. appear to be nearly three-quarters of the way over, the recession in the U.S. is just starting. He is unsure rather the recession will be mild or severe; however, he stated the bank is forecasting conditions similar to 1982 much worse then in 2001 and 1990. He also said that despite the massive exposure from its acquisition of Bear Stearns, he still believes the deal was the right decision and will eventually be profitable for the company.

How to fix a recession
2008-05-10 05:25:00
In a recession the government should reduce spending to avoid a costly deficit, whereas during boom times it should increase investment in the public sector to boost growth, efficiency and perpetuate the common good further. Right? Wrong! You just got a 0 on this quiz.It is during a recession that government increases spending and during boom times that the deficit incurred during the recession is paid of. In other words, when private sector spending goes down and economy slows, government increases spending. This is the time to build new colleges and universities, k-12 schools, highways, police stations, dispatch centers, parks, etc... Won't this create a deficit? Yes, it most likely will, as tax revenues decline during a recession. But, as any economist knows, not all deficits are created equal. First, investment in schools, infrastructure and the like is exactly that: an investment. Investments have returns, so does social sector spending. Part of the cost of a deficit derived f...

Don?t Fear ?The Ides Of March?? Just Follow These Simple Anti-Recession Tip
2008-05-08 18:03:00
“Beware the Ides of March.” So said a wise soothsayer to Julius Caesar in the famous Shakespeare play, warning him of impending doom. Caesar scoffed at him - and of course lived to regret it when he paid the ultimate price. Fortunately, March 15 (the Ides day itself) falls on Saturday this year, so there’s no chance of any market madness on that specific day. But there are still plenty of modern-day financial soothsayers warning investors about all kinds of perils. One prime example: The constant chatter about whether or not the U.S. economy has slipped into a recession. So let’s first poke…SHARETHIS.addEntry({- title: "Don’t Fear “The Ides Of March”? U.S. Pending Home Sales Probably Fell in March for Second Month
2008-05-07 08:21:00
Bloomberg has latest story about US Pending Home Sales: U.S. Pending Home Sales Probably Fell in March for Second Month Fewer Americans probably signed contracts to buy previously owned homes in March for the second consecutive month as falling prices and tougher loan rules discouraged buyers, economists said before a report today. The index of pending home resales fell 1 percent after a 1.9 percent drop in February, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey of 30 economists. The glut of unsold properties is driving down home values, while rising defaults on subprime mortgages have prompted lenders to restrict access to credit, representing more hurdles for buyers. The slump in residential real estate may persist for much of the year, hurting economic growth.....Recent reports indicate the worst housing slump in a quarter century is far from abating. Purchases of new homes plunged in March to the lowest level in a...
