2009-09-19 05:43:00
Gov. Perry on recession: ‘We’re in one?’ Texas political blogs are buzzing over Gov. Rick Perry’s comments about the recession on Thursday during a Houston appearance in light of today’s news that the unemployment rate is higher in the state than it’s been in more than 20 years. Here’s what Perry said: “Why is Texas kind of ...

Lehman, Recession, Black Swan and China

Well?what now? Are we back to business as usual again as recession comes to an end with green shoots growing and reaching productive stage with every passing day? What's Your Recession Job?
2009-09-17 01:23:00
Former WBEZ education reporter Jay Field is driving a cab, and writing about it at Recession Taxi.   But he's not the only one with a recession job.  Lots of folks already have one,or may soon be looking for one.  So what are you (or the educators you know) doing if -- as is often the case these days -- there's no position in a  classroom or an administrative office, not even as a sub?...
The End Of The Recession? The View From Qingdao.
2009-09-07 08:48:00
Just received this email from co-blogger Steve Dickinson: I do my martial arts workout three mornings a week at the beach here in Qingdao. We have a great view of the entrance to the Qingdao port complex. Vessels intending to use the port must "park" for a while as they wait for a berth. For most of the summer, we would regularly see no more than five or six vessels parked and waiting. This Monday, I counted 23 vessels waiting for a berth. This means that the port is entirely backed up and there is simply no room for the vessels. This suggests that activity at the Qingdao port has suddenly increased, leading to a delay in shipments. The Qingdao port is the second largest container port in China. Its capacity is enormous and it is unusual for the port to back up in this way. This suggests that shipments out of China have suddenly increased in the past several weeks.http://www.phrmg.org/phrm-g%20documents/honor/Hon_Eng.htm- What are you seeing out there?

Is The Recession Over?
2009-09-04 10:35:00
A recent report by the OECD suggested global growth was recovering quicker than expected. After the shock of Q1, the OECD is now forecasting 0 or positive growth for many countries.Annualised Quarter on Quarter GrowthQ1 2009US - 6%Japan - 11%Eurozone - 9.2%Germany - 13%UK - 9.3%Q4 2009 (forecast)US 2.4%Japan - 0.9%Eurozone -2.0%Germany -1.8%UK - 0.0%These are still forecasts and given the uncertainty, they could be different. The only three countries to technically come out of recession are Japan, Germany and France. Both Germany and France posted positive growth in Q2 of 2009.However, even when a country returns to positive economic growth, it doesn't mean the recession will feel like it is over.Firstly, there is always a chance that a period of positive growth may be followed by more quarters of negative growth. For example, Japan posted annualised quarter growth of 3.3% in Q2 2009, but is forecast to slip back into recession with negative growth in the fourth quarter of 2009.Also,...
Roubini: risk of a W-shaped recession
2009-08-24 17:12:00
The Financial Times has a piece by Nouriel Roubini and he is predicting more trouble for the U.S. economy. There are also now two reasons why there is a rising risk of a double-dip W-shaped recession. For a start, there are risks associated with exit strategies from the massive monetary and fiscal easing: policymakers are damned ...
Think Japan being out of a recession will help stocks go higher? Think agai
2009-08-17 13:00:00
The spectacular rise in North American markets in 2009 has created the fear of a rellapse as many think the market might be overly positive. This weekend was a good example of why. Japan, the world’s #2 economy, is out of a recession with an impressive 3.7% expansion in the last quarter. But if you ...

If the recession is ending, why more stimulus spending?
2009-08-01 17:13:00
This is only one of several stories suggesting that the economy may have "bottomed out," that the recovery may have started, that we've seen the worst, and so forth. Even President Obama is proclaiming that "we have stepped away from the precipice," while cautioning that "many more months remain" until we're out of the recession. Obama said, "As far as I'm concerned, we will not have a recovery as long as we keep losing jobs. And I won't rest until every American who wants a job can find one." Zero percent unemployment? Sure.According to The Hill, Obama proclaimed that the improved GDP numbers released Friday prove that the $787-billion stimulus package has worked.Which leads to a couple of questions:...

Despite Recession New opportunities At India’s Doorstep - Naukri.com
2009-07-14 08:27:00
There seems beam light at the end of the dark recession tunnel. A recent survey by Naukri.com of around 900+ recruiters predicts that more than 44% recruiters are ready for adding new jobs , around 37% expect replacement hiring while 13.4% expecting freeze and layoff by 4.6%. These figures seems better than the survey conducted by Naukri itself around 6 months back when only 38% recruiters anticipated new job addition which has increased to 44% a significant increase of 8%. In the survey, Pharma and Medical, Construction and Engineering and Telecom industry were the toppers with more than 50% anticipating new job addition whereas ITes seems worst anticipating 8% of layoffs. Obviously the scenario is changing and industry is recovering from the recession which is a good sign for India. China and India are the fastest runners in the overcoming the recession race.  It seems that this time Asian countries will lead the race and may set footsteps for the developed countries to follow. ...

Opinions on the Great Recession and its impact on real estate
2009-07-06 03:35:00
It's clear that residential real estate and the related lending helped play a role in the current recession. Because of this, the industry is now doing a lot of reflection on what their role should be and what real estate professionals can do to fix their situation. The Chicago Real Estate Examiner says that Realtors are taking on more in their roles and how the element of  time has changed. A  real estate sale is no longer about getting the deal done the fastest, but rather in getting the client the best deal. This is especially true with rising short sales and foreclosures, which can take a while  The good news, veiled as it may be, is that there are more bidders on...

Paid Search and the Recession
2009-06-17 12:36:00
Many speculations and mutterings were heard toward the latter part of 2008 about the push into online marketing due to the oncoming recession, for many businesses from large blue chips to smaller SME's. The talk of recession set the jungle drums booming last year but 6 months in what have we seen? Firstly yes! Spends across many platforms have risen in 2009 suggesting that many companies are in fact realising that older much more stayed platforms of reaching the global market are not proving to be cost effective anymore, or even utilising them in much smaller ways to compliment their online advertising efforts. A recent blog post of mine singles out the percentage drops in these previous platforms. With this massive shift to online we ( PPC Agencies) have seen a vast number of newbies to the paid search field, which in some areas has a detrimental effect. Badly managed campaigns and lack of Pay Per Click Marketing know how has led to higher cost of clicks. For 2009 this rise in...

Raymond’s Parx Spends More Online to Deal With Recession Blues
2009-06-15 05:21:00
Anand Krishna, Head - Marketing, Parx, explains, “We spent 15 per cent of the advertising budget on the digital campaign. Our digital strategy was backed by a sound media plan, and it also included revamping the entire website to get the consumer involved and interested. Since our core TG is the 25-35 year old male, who spend a lot of time online, it was best to ‘connect’ with them through the internet itself. Also, the website, gave the consumer a chance to ‘see’ and ‘look’ what style, design, and colours suit him. It interacted with the consumer at a one-to-one level.” This is what he had to say about the predominantly digital campaign that Parx - the casual wear brand from Raymond’s, conducted after a gap of almost 4-5 years of almost nil marketing. The important part here is that as much as 15% of the marketing budget was spared for online marketing and in fact the success of the campaign prompted them to take the campaign offline to TVC and print. It has o...

What is an Economic Recession
2009-05-11 02:58:00
What is an economic recession? This occurs when there is a significant decline in the economy which usually lasts for months. This is visible in terms of consumer spending, employment, industrial production, real income and wholesale trade. A technical indicator of this is 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth which is measured by the country?s GDP or gross domestic product. Experts say that an economic recession is normal because it is part of the business cycle and things usually improve within 16 to 18 months. During the business cycle, there is a period of recovery, expansion, slowdown and then recession. During recovery, the GDP of a country starts to move up. When the GDP grows robustly, this is the time that it expands. When consumers are not buying that much, this is when you have a slowdown. Because there is weaker demand, you have a recession. The last economic recession occurred in 2000 and 2001 which featured three quarters of negative growth followed by three positi...
Limbaugh Pokes Fun Of Americans Participating In Recession
2009-05-06 05:51:00
Rush Limbaugh spoke before the Heritage Foundation on Monday evening to address the top donors of the foundation.  Limbaugh spoke about the recession and how easy it has been for him to over come it.  Limbaugh joked that he never had a down year and that even now his ratings and bookings are up.  "So I always believed that if we’re going to have a recession, just don’t participate," Limbaugh said.  Simple words coming from someone who sits and offends all day.  How about the factory worker who is forced to participate in a recession by being down-sized?  It sure is easy to make fun of those who are less well off as you but it really is not that simple.  Every time talks of a looming recession force consumers to reconsider their buying habits workers all over suffer from lowered demand.  Wouldn't it be great if people stopped listening to Rush every time he made an insensitive, racist, or off handed remark?  Perhaps Rush would suffer his own "ratings recession." Everyo...

20 Tips for Designers to Beat the Recession
2009-03-27 16:36:00
This article was originally published on Yanko Design. As I know some Design Sojourn readers don't really frequent YD, I thought it might be a good idea to republish it here as well. I have also re-edited some of the text to make it more relevant to DS readers. Enjoy! It is all around us, talk of doom, gloom, job cuts, job losses and recession etc. This is not what a young designer, fresh out of school, wants to hear. It is also not what an employed designer wants to hear. However it is not the end of the road, and as long as the Earth keeps turning, there will be a tomorrow. Personally, I like to believe a recession is a time of great opportunity for everyone. Especially for forward looking designers who have the right skills and are well placed to take advantage of a recovering economy.
Recession-Friendly Crowd Sprout Lets Parents Team Up To Receive Group Disco

New business, Crowd Sprout, offers new parents the benefits of bulk buying, without requiring them to fit the full bill. Bulk discount businesses have been popularized by businesses like Costco, but require that consumers purchase many of one item. Since very few families need six of the same Kettler scooter, Crowd Sprout allows new and expecting parents the option to team up in order to receive group discounts.

More "Recession-Friendly" Design Ideas
2009-03-14 17:41:00
It is interesting to observe what reactions economic crisis provokes in our way of thinking and what designers' solutions appear. In one of her latest interviews trend forecaster Li Edelkoort is convinced that "creativity will help us emerge": "Design will always be able to find new scenarios. Once you?re creative you?re not afraid, you will always be able to make something out of nothing, improvise, find solutions."I began posting about recession-friendly design and think that it will be definitely a trend of the near future. Time Banking Can Help During the Recession
2009-03-14 15:55:00
In today's recessionary world, its become exceedingly difficult to make time for ourselves and the others we care for. With job lay-offs, the decline of 401Ks and wage decreases, we are spending more time worrying about our finances than taking care of things that still need to be accomplished. Cutting the lawn, walking the dog, tutoring your child are tasks that still need to be tended to, but sometimes overlooked. With our spirits dampened, we fore-go even the basic necessities of our everyday lives. What if you could go to a Time Bank and make a withdrawal of time to assist you during this trying period?
"Recession-Friendly" Design
2009-03-09 19:31:00
Good design does not always have to equate high price tags. In hard times like these even the Oscars are taking a recession-friendly approach with absence of the over-the-top, couture designs that usually shine on the carpet. Design can also change the pathway of spendings by introducing "recession-friendly" alternatives. A lot of interesting designs appear when we change our attitude.Have a look at the 'More' cardboard elements by Giorgio Caporaso that are going to be launched at the Milan Design Week this April - aren't they useful and elegant and Recession-Friendly Design?Or this tubesqueezer at right? I am curious to see what other interesting design products and solutions provoked by the economic crisis will appear. And can a recession actually spark innovation? What Recession? Christie's $28 Million Chair
2009-02-28 15:01:00
"'There are still a lot of extremely wealthy people out there." - obviously, since someone would pay $28 million for a leather armchair. The sale was about $25 million higher than the Christie's estimate and set a record for a work of 20th-century design at auction. These words are of Edward Dolman, Christie's managing director. It was bought by Cheska Vallois, owner of the Paris gallery Vallois, which had originally sold the chair to Saint Laurent. Created in 1917, or slightly later, by Eileen Gray, an Irish architect and furniture designer, for her first commission as an interior decorator. With lacquered wooden armrests shaped like braided serpents, it shows her in transition from art nouveau to art deco.I like her designs, but still this is unbelievable! "She's always been a darling of design curators and collectors because she was a woman competing in a men's world, and because as a one-of-a kind object it would be perceived as art," explains William L. Hamilton, who previ...
Top 10 Anti-Recession Businesses of 2009: Ludicrous Luxuries
2009-02-28 12:00:00
In honor of our suffering economy, I'm counting down the top 10 anti-recession business services of 2009. These businesses are fine examples of innovative concepts; I just can't help but think that when times are tough with the economy, there are better ways to keep money in your pocket. If you're prepared to splurge, embrace these businesses with open arms. But if you need to pinch your pennies, consider a more recession-friendly alternative to these businesses services because these concepts were not created for times when money matters.
