Toshiba pushing its facial recognition in Satellite series laptops
2008-05-04 16:59:00
Toshiba pushing its facial recognition in Satellite series laptopsAlthough we have previously mentioned Toshiba’s face recognition technology in our coverage of the Satellite A300 and M300 and P300, it is only now that Toshiba is officially promoting the said feature. Toshiba has employed this technology to provide Satellite owners an additional way of securing their dear Toshiba machines from unauthorized users. The technology grants or denies access to people who might use the laptops depending on whether they are registered users. To use the face recognition technology to secure their laptops, users need to have their face profiled by the laptop’s webcam during a short setup process. Once profiled, the laptop’s webcam would use this to reference people who are about to use the laptops as recognized by the laptop’s webcam. If a user’s face has not been profiled before, then the laptop would deny them access to the machine. The use of face recognition technology suits well ...
Solar Water Heater - Increasing In Usage And Recognition Throughout The Wor
2008-05-04 11:13:00
Solar water heaters are comprised of a primary collector that accumulates solar energy and a storage tank that is insulated that collects hot water. Depending on the system that the collector uses, the solar water heater might be one of two different kinds that is based on either Flat Plate Collectors or based on Evacuated Tube Collectors. Two Primary Types The Flat Plate Collector solar water heater permits solar radiation to be assimilated by the flat plate collectors that are constructed of an insulated outer metallic box that has a glass sheet covering the top. Inside the box are metallic absorber sheets that are black and that have channels that are incorporated or rise tubes to transport the water. The flowing water is then heated once the absorber assimilates the solar radiation and then transfers heat to the flowing water. The solar water heater that is chiefly based on Evacuated Tube Collectors has a collector that is constructed out of double layer of borosilicate glass tu...

Face Recognition - The New Face Of Security On Airports
2008-04-26 18:09:00
The airports in the UK are expected to get a new face of security i.e. Face Recognition Technology. The Guardian reports that a pilot project is all set to be initiated on some of the UK airports. The new face recognition technology will simply match the dimensions of people's faces with the details recorded on the electronic chips in their biometric passports, on the unmanned gates on airports. This will help to ensure better security and also decongest the queues on the airports. The only negative thing could be the rejection of some innocent passengers due to changes in their details on their biometric passports. However, there are some options to avoid inconvenience for passengers. One way could be to redirect such people to manual checking queues or to deploy some officials who could override the face recognition technology and let the passengers in after checking all the details.

Handwriting recognition for iPhone
2008-04-25 09:06:00
Chinese developer called “iPhone Cake” developed handwriting recognition for iPhone using HWPen for Latin and Chinese alphabets. Specifically used for jailbroken iPhones, the application adds an additional button to the keyboard screen, which you could just tap and write on the screen with your fingers. Since the application integrates with native text input of the iPhone, HWPen is available anywhere you normally would use your keyboard. It also works with the auto-complete function of iPhone, so you could start typing a word and hitting the spacebar to choose between spelling suggestions. The HWPen tries to work with whole words but it usually works better if you have entered one letter at a time. The software is still in beta development but based on the comments at the product page, it causes the iPhone to freeze up, requiring a restart. Another very common problem is that every time you use it, it defaults back to Chinese, meaning you have to press extra buttons in e...

Quickly, Mr. Irrelevant eloquently captures my own delayed reaction to the schedule: Initial Reaction: Fucking A. All three of our divisional road games fall within the first five weeks of the season. Bullshit. Secondary Reaction: No, seriously. How the fuck do they schedule the Skins at N.Y. in Week 1, then at Dallas and at Philly, back-to-back, in Weeks 4 and 5? Bullshit. That same stretch was rough enough to get Head Coach Jim Zorn's attention and could very well get the attention of Redskins nation should the team find itself in an early season winning deficit. We always do best ~ 5-6, though, right? You can also find schedule reactions here, here, here, and here. Also, the NFL failed in scheduling the Cowboys last Texas Stadium regular season game against someone besides the Redskins. Epic, epic fail NFL. Someone should go make a diary about it. Be civil. Besides the early grueling road schedule, the big word is our three prime time games: The Redskins open the season for the ...

iPhone Graffiti offers Palm-style handwriting recognition
2008-04-16 18:34:00
Something I can’t remember hearing much complaint about, surprisingly, is the absence of handwriting recognition on the iPhone.  There have been various studies comparing the on-screen QWERTY keyboard with T9 and hardware thumb-board options, but seemingly little demand for the ability to write directly onto the cellphone’s screen.  Well, anybody who has missed such an option can now install iPhone Graffiti; as the name suggests, it’s a version of the Graffiti handwriting recognition, as seen on Palm OS devices. Supporting Latin and Chinese characters, as well as full punctuation and symbols, letters are drawn on the input grid in the lower half of the screen and converted as you write.  Since the iPhone doesn’t use a stylus, you might find you need to train your finger to make the shapes clearly.  Alternatively there are a couple of compatible styli available, such as from Pogo. iPhone Graffiti is still in early beta form, so the advice is to back up ...

Bug Man achieves academic recognition
2008-04-16 09:14:00
Some people wouldn't give a second thought to squashing them underfoot but entomologist Ruud Kleinpaste predicts a doomsday scenario in a world without bugs. Known here and internationally as "The Bug Man", Kleinpaste says insects consistently get "bad press" but he can't imagine life without them. "About 80 per cent of plants are pollinated by insects and imagine if bugs didn't clean up all the crap from cattle, people or whatever. "Dung removal is a really important job and if you didn't have it, in two months' time you'd be up to your neck in shit." [ ... ] Still speaking with a Dutch accent despite migrating here in 1978, Kleinpaste said he never trapped insects in jars as a child nor did he do any experiments involving magnifying glasses and ants. In fact, his foray into the study of insects was "completely by accident". "I actually wanted to study biology but when I went to university in 1969 we were all given a large frog and a brick and with the brick we had t...
