Harmonics - Putting The Record Straight
2012-01-23 05:09:00
Over the years, Wireless Waffle has tried to explain and demystify many of the more esoteric technical terms and concepts used in the wireless world such as OFDM, intermodulation and even interpreting ionograms. There is one very straightforward technical concept that is so often misused that it's time the record is set straight. That concept is harmonics.Harmonics should be the easiest concept to understand. Passing any radio (or for that matter audio) signal through anything that is not perfectly linear (and the only things that are perfectly linear are pieces of wire) will produce differing degrees of harmonics. The non-linear device will produce other things as well (such as the aforementioned intermodulation) but harmonics are probably the number one resultant. A harmonic is simply a copy of the original signal but with it's frequency multiplied by an integer. The second harmonic is therefore the original signal but with all it's frequencies doubled. The seco...
Is WEEDS Burnt Out? Showtime Prez David Nevins Goes on the Record!
2012-01-12 20:16:00
Pasadena — At this morning’s Television Critics Association Press Tour Executive Session, Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins made the most of his allotted time by highlighting the many successes of his little-cabler-that-could. In fact, be it the success of HOMELAND, to his excitement surrounding the upcoming seasons of NURSE JACKIE, THE BIG C, THE BORGIAS and EPISODES, Nevins touched on virtually the entirety of his Network’s slate. With that is the notable exception of WEEDS. So what exactly does the future hold for a family that takes dysfunction to an entirely new level? And more to the point, is this the final season of the show? “Not definitely, but it’s a really possibility,” admits Nevins during a small media scrum following the end of his session. Less of a possibility as it turns out, is Nevins teasing the direction of the show, which as fans will recall ended the season with Nancy as the literal target of a sniper’s sight ...
ROLLS-ROYCE RECORD YEAR
2012-01-09 15:47:00
Not sure about everyone else, but when we hear the phrase "global recession" we pretty much assume that all world markets are taking some kind of hit, no? Well, according to Rolls-Royce sales in 2011, such isn't necessarily the case for luxury car sales, in fact, the company reported its most successful year to date! The infamous makers of the Phantom sold a whopping 3,538 vehicles last year, 391 more vehicles than their last record year in 1978. It's also highly relevant to note that sales growth in worldwide markets had much to do with the feat. The company reports a 47-percent increase in the Asian Pacific region, 17 in North America, 23 in the Middle East, and a 30-percent growth at home in the UK. Astonishing. Further proof that while things may be globally awry, upper class spending's got more than a healthy pulse!

ETF Stats for November 2011: Yearly Launches Set New Record
2011-12-08 17:15:00
Launch activity slowed to just seventeen new product introductions in November, but the year-to-date count of 292 is enough to clinch the title for most new ETPs in a calendar year.  The previous record of 291 was established four years ago in 2007.  The new monthly additions consisted of thirteen ETFs and four ETNs, bringing current listings to 1,376 (1,176 ETFs and 200 ETNs).  Actively managed ETFs remain at just 39, or less than 3% of the total count. Assets under management slipped by 1.6% but held above the $1 trillion mark.  Trading activity declined 15% for ETFs and 4% for ETNs.  Dollar volume averaged $78.8 billion per day.  The number of ETFs averaging more than $1 billion in . . . → Read More: ETF Stats for November 2011: Yearly Launches Set New Record

For The Record.....
2011-12-06 03:10:00
I am not against the Boston Red Sox hiring of Bobby Valentine, the manager. My dislike for Valentine comes from his days as a broadcaster for ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. Like some of you, I muted the games so I didn't have to listen to his dribble. And we now have to listen to that for 162 games plus spring training and other times as well. To be 100% honest with you, the name change to Pats & Dawgs was more of a publicity stunt than anything. And of course it backfired. I'm not afraid to admit that. I had hoped that maybe it would have drawn a little attention to the site. It didn't. I was never going to drop the Red Sox coverage from the site permanently. I only did that for the my little stunt that didn't work out. I am all for Valentine as the new skipper for the Red Sox. While something in my gut tells me that might it not end well, I do think that he is the right man for the job. He's got the experience of managing in the big leagues plus he managed in Japan where ...

ETF Deathwatch for November 2011: Count Surges to Record High
2011-11-11 19:27:00
ETF Deathwatch membership surges to an all time high for November.  Thirty-seven new names are joining the list, while only a dozen are leaving.  The net increase of 25 products boosts the count to 211, representing a 13% increase over the 186 for October.  The current list contains 154 ETFs and 57 ETNs with an average age of about 26 months and average assets of less than $6 million.  It appears the huge jump in the number of products now fighting for their survival is a direct result of the record pace of exchange traded product launches this year.  The 275 new arrivals during the first ten months of the year are more than the market can absorb.  This is . . . → Read More: ETF Deathwatch for November 2011: Count Surges to Record High

Greenpeace Ramps Up Pressure On Facebook With Record-Breaking Comments
2011-04-18 09:24:00
Greenpeace has found a new way to persuade Facebook and have the social network washing its hands off coal. They are using the social network’s platform to show Mark Zuckerberg and his team, the growing number of people who are also holding the same demand. The first step of this initiative was to create a page on Facebook — Unfriend Coal. And the second step, well, we doubt if Greenpeace anticipated that, but 70000 comments showed up on that page in just 24 hours. That fetched Greenpeace a Guinness World Record. Previously, the record was 50000 comments in 24 hours while on Greenpeace’s Facebook page the number of comments uploaded was almost 70000 in the equal time span. Though the Guinness World Record committee will verify it, we don’t think Greenpeace faked it. Why would they? If Facebook stops using coal, that will benefit our environment, not Greenpeace. Greenpeace volunteers are also trying their best to rope in Facebook employees to support their cause. A d...
