Yuri Manga: Red Garden, Volume 4
2009-07-06 22:23:00
Red Garden, Volume 4 is 272 pages of blood, weirdness, violence and undead girls who look very fetching in that frock. As you can see clearly from the cover, Kate steps forward to openly take her place as the lead character in this volume. It's been apparent that, although the story is *said* to revolve around Lise, it really revolves around Kate.Kate and Herve' come together, and are ripped apart, Kate fends off Evil, Psycho Lesbian TM Paula who, completely unlike the wonderful, kind, sincere Paula of the anime, is a loathsome, unstable creature in the fine tradition of carnivorous lesbians in most media. But dont worry - she dies. then she comes back and turns out to be real nice after all. But she dies again anyway.Kate is set apart from Rose, Rachel and Claire at the end when, in order to save everyone, she is forced to sacrifice herself. Although they mourn their loss, they are able to move on and live the life that had been taken from them. Kate, however, does not die, but l...

Red Garden Anime, Volume 6 (English)

As the curtain opens for Red Garden, Volume 6, the four girls finally find some equilibrium in their shattered lives. One at a time, we watch Clare, Rose, Rachel and Kate come to the belated realization that they have never truly been alone. Armed with the knowledge that their existence meant *something* to *someone,* they head off for what they know will be a final battle. The battle is itself, inconsequential. The two sides that needlessly fought, now needlessly die at each others' hands. While Edgar loses everything he thought he had, Lise is returned to the four, and together they all face their final rest...in peace. Is it some years later, or in an alternate universe that we find the same four reborn into a future city that is completely different and exactly the same. Metempsychosis brings them into contact with people they have known well in their former lives - but there is no recognition of that acquaintance. They've lived so long, they've had to be seventeen so many time...
Red Garden Anime, Volume 3 (English)

Thanks to Ziggr for sponsering today's review of Red Garden, Volume 3!In this third volume of Red Garden, the four girls struggle not with life in general, but with specific relationships - with the men in their lives. Rachel is having serious issues with her boyfriend Luke, who is trying to break through the wall she's built between them. She'd like to confide, but instead watches helplessly as he drifts away from her.Claire carries the bonus share, by having not one, but three men with whom she needs to address things - Ewan (called Yuan in this release, but that seems less likely to me,) her brother and her father. We learn that, despite all evidence to the contrary, Claire is not actually dirt poor. Her pride goeth so she need not fall, this time.Rose and her friend decide to track down Rose's father, whose absence comprises half of the burden on her family. We learn that he is not *gone,* per se - he is simply absent. Rose decides that his presence is more important than th...
Red Garden Anime Review of Disc 1
2007-10-18 22:28:00
Overall Rating: B+Synopsis: Red Garden is a supernatural/horror/drama/myste-ry anime by Gonzo studio. The plot follows Kate, Rachel, Rose, and Claire, who all go to the same private school in New York. All four wake up one morning with no memory of the last night. The following night, they are all visited by red butterflies that lead them to a woman named Lula who tells them they are dead. For obvious reasons, this only confuses them more. She also reveals that the four girls must fight strange creatures for them to stay alive. However, they soon realize she's telling the truth, as one of the creatures attacks them. I'll be the first to admit I have a soft spot for supernatural manga and anime. So, when I heard about Red Garden I knew I had to check it out. I haven't gotten that far into it yet, but I'm already glad I got the first disc from Netflix. The plot shows a lot of promise, and I want to know the whole story behind the four girls and how they're alive. I will say there ...

Yuri Manga: Red Garden, Volume 1
2007-04-19 18:32:00
I liked the anime for Red Garden enough that, when a manga became available I jumped right on it. The combination of likeable characters, solid horror/action plot and Yuri worked just fine for me. The fact that the one actual lesbian character wasn't diminished in any way, did not die or become psychotic or any other predictable negative outcome, just added to my overall enjoyment. (My prediction in my review was, therefore, completely wrong. And I'm thrilled.) In fact, I thought the whole situation was handled beautifully. So, I was really interested to see what Gonzo was going to do with the manga for Red Garden. And while it is definitely different from the anime, I'm still liking it pretty much. The artist for the manga, Ayamura Kirihito, doesn't appear to have done any other manga, although he does have some art collections, and a really creepy doll photo book. And dolls really seem to be his interest. So the art for Red Garden is very lush with a strong preference for GothLo...

Winter 2007 Anime Season: Red Garden
2007-01-19 17:13:00
Like Code Geass, Red Garden is a series that is more properly attributed to the Autumn 2006 anime season, but I've been too lazy busy to review it until now.The plot is still a bit obscure, and I am not sure how much will be or can be explained. But in short, four high school girls learn that they are technically dead, but have been given a second life in order to fight off diseased men who become beast-like. So it kind of has a vampire-y, werewolf-y, undead, creature of the night feel to it. Both the reason the men change (attributed vaguely to a curse) and the reason the girls should kill them is left rather shadowy at the time I write this, which is probably midway through the anime. We learn that the family whose men are affected by the curse are attempting to reverse it. Which side is good, and which is bad - or if there is indeed a bad/good, right/wrong, we have yet to learn. And we may never learn it, frankly, which would be no detriment to the story. The four girls involved ...
