Dry red: wine’s withering future
2008-05-17 02:37:00
Drought and higher temperatures mean some wine-growing areas will be less productive. Climate change could wipe out up to 80 per cent of Australia’s wine production as large parts of inland irrigation zones become too hot and dry to support grapevines, a US academic has warned. Visiting Australia on a fellowship with Melbourne University, environmental scientist Dr Greg Jones said winemakers in the US and Europe were buying up land at higher altitudes and in coastal regions where cooler conditions would provide a buffer to global warming. Similarly, in Australia, as higher temperatures reduce inland rainfall, horticultural zones reliant on irrigation, such as the Murray-Darling Basin, may no longer be productive. “The biggest issue in Australia is how the water situation will work its way out. Without irrigation, 80 per cent of the Australian industry is in peril,” Dr Jones said. The Australian, May 5.
Great Value Italian Red Wine
2008-04-30 17:14:00
The wine was a 2005 Siema Rosso Vino da Tavola by Lodali Winery from Piedmont. Sorry, I seem to have not taken a picture of this one. The wine clocked in at 12% alcohol by volume and cost me $8!!!! at The Winery in Old Town Alexandria. It's a blend of 50% Barbera and 50% Dolcetto. I believe I took more notes on this wine than almost any other red wine I've had in recent memory. I'm still shocked at the layers and depth in this little $8 bottle of wine. What I should have done was go buy the rest that The Winery had because this was simply an amazing value. The nose showed smoke, leather, a little barnyard, red berries, and red currants. It kept opening up as the night progressed and the smell was amazing. In the mouth the wine was red and earthy. I found red berries, red currants, earth, leather, a smoky characteristic, and more red fruit. This was just an absolutely fabulous deep wine with layers of flavors. Everyone loved this one at our dinner party. I served it with hom...

Happy and Healthy Valentine - Red Wine and Chocolate!
2008-02-11 16:11:00
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, my thoughts always think of chocolate. It’s no secret that I happen to love chocolate and red wine together. In the early years of my wine exploration I learned how to drink dry red wines accompanied with chocolate. A bite of chocolate from one hand and a drink of red wine from the other. And of course, I got hooked. In moderation, dark chocolate and red wine happens to be good for us, besides being delicious and decadent. Chocolate contains flavonoids, particularly potent antioxidants that possess an ability to clear free radicals and protect against inflammation, which helps in protecting your heart. Red wine contains an abundance of the antioxidant resveratrol, which assists in making our cells healthier. In the Valley we are fortunate to have Lan Wong and James Boulanger, who moved here from New York and opened a chocolatier boutique named Petits Noirs. Their chocolate creations are not only inspired by the fresh produce grown in the Va...

Goat Cheese Stuffed Pork Tenderloin with Red Wine Balsamic Cherry Sauce
2008-01-11 11:12:00
This is a great pork recipe full of flavour and really delicious, it is a little fiddly to put together but well worth the end result. The only problem that occurs sometimes, not all the time, is some of the goats cheese melts out, this is no problem once I slice the pork I just put the escaped cheese into whatever slice it is missing from. The tighter you can get the kitchen string and the closer together the less this will happen.IngredientsGoats Cheese Stuffed Tenderloin1 Pork tenderloin, (550kg)Salt and pepper to taste300g Goats cheese1 Teaspoon lemon zest1 1/2 Tablespoons fresh basil, finely choppedRed Wine Balsamic Cherry Sauce1 Teaspoon chicken stock granules1 Tablespoon Cherry Preserve1 Teaspoon Cornflour1/2 Cup water1/2 Cup dry red wine1/2 Cup cherries, pitted and halved (Fresh are best when I made this the other night I could not get any fresh as they are out of season, you can use canned, but I usually make this with fresh and it is far superior.)11/2 Tablespoons balsamic...

Jayson 2003 Napa Valley Red Wine
2007-12-21 06:26:00
A short review on a wine we had with dinner tonight.Jayson 2003 Napa Valley Red Wine is produced by Pahlmeyer, and is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. It is made from the grapes/juice that is left over after producing the "big brother wine", Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red.The wine is dark ruby red in the glass. The nose shows black cherry, plum, blackberry, and vanilla. The palate follows in it's path with black berries, oaky vanilla, and relatively smooth tannins that however shows notes of green wood. The nose is a step above the palate, which is a little thinner in the fruit at the finish then you are lead to believe.Find this wine at Wine-Searcher.com from $ 59.99. For the price it is a pretty decent bottle, but there are certainly better wines in that price range out there.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog Top!

Beef and Red Wine Stew with Dumplings
2007-11-16 21:27:00
We?ve had some beautiful days this week, with clear, bright blue skies and sunshine, the kind you often get on cold, cold days, as these have been. The last few mornings have seen frost; pretty on grass while a nuisance on cars that need driving. With the frost and the cold comes the winter cooking, and when I saw this fabulous stewing steak in the window of my local butcher today I knew a rich stew was in order, and it absolutely had to have dumplings in it. I love dumplings but Rob doesn?t like them so I don?t make them very often. The last time I made a stew I decided to be self-indulgent and make myself some, but my suet was out of date (see, it had been that long), so I missed out. Thankfully my butcher, bless him, stocks packets of suet so today I was able to buy some with the beef. Tonight I would have my dumplings.Beef and Red Wine Stew with DumplingsIngredients500g good stewing steak, cut into chunks250g baby carrots1 onion, finely chopped1 clove of garlic, crushedHalf a bot...
Red Wine Headache Discussions Give Me A Pain In The... umm...Head!
2007-11-16 16:40:00
Every time I hear someone utter, "I only drink white wine because the sulfites in red wine give me headaches." And of course, the first thing I want to say is, "You dumb door knob (my apologies to you smarter door knobs - don’t bother sending me hate mail)! There are more sulfites in a glass of white wine than red and further more, there are more sulfites in your entire body than any single bottle of wine! No wonder you’re such a big pain in the...!"But - - I don’t say that. Instead I smile and calmly try to give some friendly sulfite education, but usually it's too late. Once those naysayers of sulfites in wine get fixated on the mis-lead and uninformed subject, there is no turning back for them.Back in the early 80's I took a wine mini-course and tour at Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodenville, Washington and I remember then our tour guide informed us about those red wine headaches. We were told most headaches were caused from the natural histamines found in fruit and vegetab...

Zaca Mesa 2004 Z Cuvee Santa Ynez Valley Red Wine
2007-11-06 03:53:00
Zaca Mesa Winery is located in Santa Ynez Valley on an 750 acre estate whereof 244 acres are planted vineyard. The winery was founded in 1972 and was one of the first in Santa Ynez Valley since the prohibition ended. It was originally planted with varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, etc. In the early 1990's it was determined that Rhone varietals such as Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, and Roussanne grew best on the site, and it was decided that these were the varietals the winery would focus on. Since 2002 an additional 100 acres have been replanted with new clones of Rhone varietals. All grapes used in their wine is grown on their property with sustainable wine growing as the goal.An interesting trivia is that their Syrah was served in the White House by President Clinton to the French President Chirac. The Zaca Mesa 2004 Z Cuvee Santa Ynez Valley Red Wine is a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsaut. Cover Connection: Red Red Wine
2007-10-16 05:40:00
Most people are familiar with UB40's version of "Red Red Wine." The band's infectious, reggae tinged cover topped the US charts on this day in 1988, although it took five years to get there. The song was a reissue of UB40's first version, with the addition of a "toast" by the band's resident rapper Astro. Both versions trace their influence to a 1969 ska flavored version recorded by Jamaican artist Tony Tribe. But the original song, written and recorded by Neil Diamond in 1968, was a slower mournful number--a drunk's lament over lost love. Red, red wineGo to my headMake me forget that IStill need her soRed, red wineIt's up to youAll I can do, Ive doneBut memories wont goNo, memories wont goI'd have swornThat with timeThoughts of youWould leave my headI was wrongAnd I findJust one thingMakes me forgetRed, red wineStay close to meDont let me be aloneIt's tearing apartMy blue, blue heartLyrically, it's a great song (as are many Diamond songs) that lends itself to a variety ...
