Don't be afraid to chill your reds--and warm your whites
2009-07-01 16:00:00
At what temperature should you serve red and white wines? It depends on a variety of factors that mainly have to do with the style of wine being served. In general, we tend to drink our white wines too cold and our red wines far too warm. Much of this has to do with personal preference, but temperature can have a profound effect on the flavor, texture and aroma of wine, so it is important to discuss. Here are my guidelines. I would suggest conducting your own experiment by manipulating the temperature on a couple of wines to demonstrate the differences. ...

Yes, I see that, a ball. Let's try to keep it inside the park this time around. Rubber game time, guys and gals. Cubs looked like they would be making quick work of the Reds in this series after the first game, then they ran into the buzzsaw that was Johnny Cueto last night and barely got a runner to third base. Good news though (I think). Cubs have Big Z going today. There's no question Zambrano is the team's best pitcher, but he's coming off an outing where he was flat-out grooving pitches and gave up nine hits, seven runs and three runs. The good news is that he's 5-0 in his last five starts against the Reds. Opposing Zambrano is everyone's favorite emo pitcher, Aaron Harang. Like Zambrano, Harang got shelled his last time out (10 hits, five runs) and is 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA on the road so far. When he's not trying on the newest eyeliner and trying the best way to use "mood swings" and "World Series rings" in a song, Harang attempts to be the ace of the Reds. MARKETING FA...

Ted prays for safe entry into heaven for the lives he's about to take. I must be the luckiest man alive.  I have now done three Ted Lilly game threads.  I only hope I don't piss him off.  He's psycho killer scary. "Easy there killer." We joke about Ted Lilly's perceived bad-assitude, but in all seriousness, he has been an absolutely wonderful signing.  Is he the greatest pitcher the cubs have ever had?  Of course not.  Is he one of the best left handed pitchers we've had in a long time?  Yes, yes he is.  In his two full seasons and two starts for the Cubs he has won 34 games while losing only 17.  He has struck out 369 batters and walked only 121.  Barring any unforeseen disasters, he will win his 100th game this year.  Not too shabby. For me though, it's not just about the stats.  It's his personality.  He has one expression: Amused Boredom He looks like he's enjoying the punchline to a joke only he gets. &...

I know people from the Southern Midwest are afraid of people from big cities, but there's no reason to arm your mascot. Ah, Reds fans. So angry, so hapless, stuck with such a horrible mascot. I remember back in 2007 (2008?) when they signed Dusty Baker to manage their perennial also-ran team. They were so smug, so certain it was the Cubs that brought Dusty down. So convinced that things would be different once Dusty got to their fair city. Alas, after two years of Dusty's reign and a campaign against base-clogging of unparalleled prorportions, will they still feel the same? Let's go to Red Reporter to find out. After Janish's performances so far It's really hard to chalk Gonzalez's playing time up to anything other than Dusty's veteran-love. by Brendanukkah on Apr 21, 2009 11:32 AM EDT Hmm. Veteran love. I remember it so well. I was supportive of Dusty being a "player's manager." But now we really see that he's a very selective player's manager, equally willing to stand b...

That's more like it Cubs snap into shape A day too late. From the Daily Herald: Cubs manager Lou Piniella issued a warning before Saturday night's 14-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. "These last 20 games or 21 games, I'm going to try to play a lineup that can win a ballgame that day," he said. "That's all I'm going to do. I've played everybody all year. Everybody's gotten opportunities all year. "And now we're going to try to play a lineup that can win a baseball game that particular night. These guys want to stay in the lineup, swing the bats." It seems the Cubs got the message. One guy who really got it was left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who hit solo homers in the third and fifth innings and followed it with a 3-run blast in the sixth. It was the third time Soriano went deep three times in a game, and it helped the Cubs (86-56) snap a six-game losing streak. The 14 runs matched their amount for the entire six-game skid. More on Lou's new-look lineup Why didn't he try ...

Ok.  Everyone calm down.  If Major League Baseball resembles anything at the moment, it's slasher films from the 80's, and Cubs fans are acting like the helpless red-shirted dorks who drop their glasses in the rain and thank the person who gives them back, only to find out that they're...The Killer. Hey, as long as we're on the subject of red-shirted, first-to-die-in-movie dopes with glasses... You see what I did there? If you don't follow the Reds that much, you may not have noticed that the Reds traded away two of their best players: Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey, Jr.  Dunn now plays for the Diamondbacks, while Junior is on Chicago's South Side. Thursday 8/21 Game Recap; Cubs 3, Reds 2
2008-08-22 02:46:00
Sorry for you, Korey Today, your Chicago Cubs avoided looking like complete arses, defeating the Reds 3-2 and coming away with the 2-1 series win. I can only imagine the collective shudder after the first batter of the game, Chris Dickerson walked on 4 pitches. Chris Dickerson = Eric's son? You decide Apparently Big Z had a Big Z moment and got it together (from the AP, via Yahoo): Carlos Zambrano delivered a heated first-inning lecture to someone he knew would listen-himself. Upset after giving up a four-pitch walk to leadoff batter Chris Dickerson, Zambrano calmed down, regrouped and got out of the inning. The Cubs' ace also overcame a sore tooth, and homered on Thursday to finally get his 13th victory as Chicago beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2. "I was talking to myself. I told myself, 'Is it that hard to throw strikes? Come on, let's go,"' Zambrano said. "I would rather have people go out there and hit home runs than walk somebody. I hate walks." So do we, Carlos, so do we. A...

One of the good things about having a 6 5.5 (thanks a lot, Cecil and your sorry-ass guarantee)-game lead is you don't have to stress about every game. Especially when the Reds come in town. Did you see that lineup last night? Wow. So, speaking of the Reds, they just sent out a letter to their season-ticket holders (no word on if there is such a thing) explaining their "plan." And by plan, I mean, sucking. Here are a few highlights, along with the true meaning: What they said: "While the run production generated by these two veterans (Griffey and Dunn) will not be quickly replaced, we chose to endure the short-term ramifications for the sake of building a strong, competitive team for 2009 and many seasons to come." What they meant: "Those were our two best players, and the guys who actually got what few fans we have left to come to the ballpark. So, yeah, we're in trouble. But we have hope for next year. I am a broken record." What they said: "Since taking ownership of this franch...

Dusty in happier days It's actually kind of cute the lengths that Reds.com has gone to to try to keep their fans engaged; like suggesting that the Reds, now 21.5 games back of the Cubs, are still "a factor" in the division race. CINCINNATI -- The Reds are 21 1/2 games out of first place. But that does not mean they're not participants in the pennant race. Actually, it does. But never fear. Dusty has big plans for next season. And with an abundance of youth on the roster, Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker feels the experience will be good for his club. "It'll be beneficial because we're planning on being in that race next year," Baker said. "Guys that have never been there don't know what it's like. We need to get a taste of it." So Dusty's plan is to start playing the young guys. You know, Corey Patterson, Jerry Hairston Jr., Neifi. The young guys. Meanwhile, the (marginally) more intelligent fans over at Red Reporter have begun pondering what they did to deserve a season tha...
