Reed Johnson a hit in Cubs debut, leads Chicago to 7-5 victory over Giants
2008-03-26 01:34:00 Reed Johnson was an immediate hit in his Chicago Cubs debut. Two days after he was released by Toronto, Johnson agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract with the Cubs and then got two hits, including a double, and scored twice Tuesday in a 7-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants. “I had three days ...

Cubs Sign Reed Johnson
2008-03-25 13:38:00 1:48pm: The Chicago Tribune says the deal is for $1.3MM. 12:35pm: Levine now reports that the Cubs have signed Johnson. For a team focused on winning now, it's not a bad move. Only drawback might be the Murton situation. Meanwhile, Evan Grant says the Rangers reduced their demands for Marlon Byrd but the Cubs still decided to pass. 11:41am: It's all Reed Johnson, all the time here at MLBTR. Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 says the Cubs will make a contract offer to Johnson once he clears waivers about twenty minutes from now. Cubs GM Jim Hendry has already been in contact with Arn Tellem, Johnson's agent. Matt Murton might be the odd man out if the Cubs complete the signing. I'll update this post if more info rolls in today.

Who Wants Reed Johnson?
2008-03-24 16:42:00 3:40pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Cubs are "showing the heaviest interest" in Johnson. Johnson does make sense for the Cubs, playing center when the team faces a lefty. It might hold Felix Pie back slightly, but it's a win-now move. Rosenthal says the Red Sox, Rays, and Rangers are the other teams in on Johnson. It's definitely surprising to see the Sox and Rangers in the mix as neither club is light on outfielders. 9:40am: If 31 year-old outfielder Reed Johnson clears release waivers, he's going to be a hot commodity. Already, the expected three teams have been named as possibilities in their respective newspapers. On Sunday, Joel Sherman characterized the Mets' interest as "mild at best." Bart Hubbuch says the Mets are interested but quotes Omar Minaya as saying the Mets will go with internal options. Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald says the Cubs have interest in Johnson, noting that Jim Hendry is likely to make an acquisition this week. Jeff D...

Blue Jays release Reed Johnson
2008-03-24 00:43:00 Shannon Stewart appears to have won the job as the Blue Jays’ starting left fielder after Toronto released Reed Johnson on Sunday. Johnson, who was hitting .289 with three doubles and three RBIs, had spent his entire career with the Blue Jays. “I don’t have any hard feelings,” Johnson said. “I don’t have much of a choice ...

Blue Jays release Reed Johnson, opening up LF for Shannon Stewart
2008-03-23 15:16:00 Shannon Stewart appears to have won the job as the Blue Jays’ starting left fielder after Toronto released Reed Johnson on Sunday morning. Johnson, who was hitting .289 with three doubles and three RBIs, had spent his entire career with the Blue Jays. “I don’t have any hard feelings,” Johnson said. “I don’t have much of a choice right now except to move on. It’s really all I can say. Read the full story.

Reed Johnson Not On Waivers, Says Ricciardi
2008-03-22 16:01:00 The Globe and Mail's Jeff Blair refers to "scuttlebutt among scouts" about the Jays placing outfielder Reed Johnson on waivers. However, J.P. Ricciardi said this was not true. The Toronto GM said a choice is close regarding Johnson and Shannon Stewart, and both won't make the team. The Mets might be a match for Johnson. I'm surprised by the way the Jays have gone about things in left field this year. They brought back Matt Stairs, who can pretty much only play left since Frank Thomas and Lyle Overbay own the DH and first base spots. They've got a seemingly Major League ready (and cheap) outfielder in Adam Lind. They decided to tender a contract to Johnson, something I did not expect. And then they signed Shannon Stewart on top of it all. What are the Jays going to do with all these guys?

Pagan Vs Reed Johnson
2008-03-12 01:14:00 It seems like someone has linked the Mets to almost every right handed corner outfielder in the league. All of which has occurred while Angel Pagan has done everything he can to prove he deserves a spot on the team. In today's game he hit a two run triple and saved a run on a stellar defensive play. Not only is he hitting .412 but has shown great speed (offensively/defensively), defense and a very good arm....."He's done a good job," said Mets general manager Omar Minaya. "He's really playing well -- both offensively and defensively. And with Moises Alou out we feel comfortable. Right now he hasn't made the team, but if he keeps on playing the way he has, it has helped his cause." source MLB.comOmar has said before that if he brings a player in because of Alou's injury it would be a role player and an upgrade over Pagan. Unless Pagan tanks the rest of spring training it will be hard to find a player who is an upgrade, unless they just don't believe in him hitting from the righ...

Mets Inquire On Reed Johnson, Shannon Stewart
2008-03-11 18:14:00 According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have checked in on Blue Jays outfielders Shannon Stewart and Reed Johnson. Nicely done, Drunk Jays Fans. Although you spelled "rumor" incorrectly. Sherman says Stewart is a long shot since he can't handle right. The Mets want someone who can handle both corners, and Johnson could be that someone (he's played 64 games in right in '06 and 13 in '07). The 31 year-old will earn $3.275MM this year. He could be useful if last year's back problems are behind him.

No Market For Reed Johnson
2008-02-25 15:15:00 According to a source of Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail, the market for left fielder Reed Johnson is "non-existent." This is not a big surprise - Johnson was a candidate to be non-tendered this winter. He had back surgery in April and is set to earn $3.27MM in '08. Blair speculates that the Jays may be inclined to listen to offers for Adam Lind. Back in November, ESPN's Keith Law had this to say about Lind: Lind has a classic left-hander's swing and good hand-eye coordination. His power is fringe-average but projects to above-average. He's best suited to play first base, but it's possible to live with his defense in left because of how he'll hit.

Odds and Ends: Closers, Benson, Reed Johnson
2008-01-29 12:38:00 Some random links for the day... I have created a Fantasy Baseball Closers page at RotoAuthority. With the help of readers it will be constantly updated with current closers and the pecking order of each team. Kris Benson will throw for teams again, probably a week from now. The Phillies will again be in attendance. Benson may only get a minor league deal this time around. I remember when he set the standard with his three-year, $21MM deal. Also, the Phils could look to move Wes Helms or Greg Dobbs now that they've signed Pedro Feliz. The Red Sox had their eye on Reed Johnson, perhaps thinking he would be non-tendered. He wasn't, and Joe McDonald says Bobby Kielty and Eric Hinske will probably sign elsewhere as well. That leaves Brandon Moss for the bench job, unless the Sox sign Tony Clark, Sean Casey, or Brad Wilkerson.

Reed Johnson signs a one year contract with the Blue Jays
2008-01-03 02:18:00 Reed Johnson and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a one-year contract. The contract is worth $3,275,000. He hit .236 with two homers and 14 RBIs last season. In five seasons with the Blue Jays Johnson is a .281 hitter with 42 homers and 234 RBIs.

2008-01-02 21:33:00 Outfielder Reed Johnson and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract worth $3,275,000. The 31-year-old hit .236 with two homers and 14 RBIs last season, which was cut short in April because of a herniated disk. Blue Jays Sign Stairs For Two Years
2007-11-02 19:40:00 According to ESPN's Amy K. Nelson, the Blue Jays have signed Matt Stairs to a two-year, $3.5MM deal. The price seems about right. J.P. Ricciardi has predicted a quite offseason, so we may not see much else. Nelson says the plan is for Stairs to mainly platoon with Adam Lind in left field. That seems to leave Reed Johnson as a non-tender candidate. The arbitration-eligible Johnson made $3.075MM in 2007 but his a miserable .236/.305/.320 in 275 ABs. That was a far cry from his '06 performance of .317/.388/.477. It should be noted that Johnson had back surgery in April, which probably explains the decline. showad();

Neglecting the Company Man
2007-08-22 12:25:00 There's plenty of crying in baseball, but loyalty is in much shorter supply. And for good reason; teams can't afford to pay much more than lip-service to such considerations in a business as competitive as Major League Baseball. Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star, however, feels that the Blue Jays are remiss for failing to observe such old-fashioned conventions. Of course, even suggesting that a respect for prior allegiance was pervasive at one time in baseball is suspect; for many years, the reserve clause ensured that fealty was enforced, to the detriment of the players, and as Steven Goldman observes in Baseball Prospectus' Mind Game, great teams of the past, such as the Yankee dynasties of the 30s and 40s-50s, pursued any means available to remain competitive--even when that meant jettisoning those who had accumulated many years of faithful service. Even if we accept that Griffin's idyllic labor-management relationship ever existed outside of the mid-19th century, the prese...
Reed Johnson to have surgery on herniated disk
2007-04-16 23:42:00 Blue Jays left fielder Reed Johnson will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. Johnson, who will have the operation in Florida, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday. The team hopes to get him back sometime in July. Johnson is hitting .265 this season with a home run and seven ...

Let's Make A Deal: Reed Johnson
2007-04-06 16:10:00 Reed Johnson. He's a 30 year-old outfielder who can play all three positions. He posted a .391 OBP as the Jays' leadoff hitter last year. He doesn't need to be platooned. He makes $3.075MM this year and has two years of service time left before free agency. If there's one team that can afford to compromise a little outfield defense, it's the Jays. They've got two excellent athletes in Vernon Wells and Alex Rios. The DH spot is blocked with Frank Thomas, leaving no spot for young Adam Lind. Lind appears Major League ready - his PECOTA is .289/.349/.493 and he projects to be more valuable than Johnson in 2007. Lind's defense is lacking, but the Jays can stomach that. So which teams could use Reed Johnson? The Twins, Braves, Cardinals, and Marlins are possibilities. I think he could be a decent center fielder for the Fish, but they'd hesitate to take on his salary. The Braves seem content with their left fi...

Reed Johnson will leadoff for Blue Jays
2007-03-26 16:35:00 Reed Johnson, for the first time, is being counted on as the everyday left fielder and leadoff man. At age 30, with eight pro seasons under his belt, Johnson feels like a rookie. It's been a long time coming and he appreciates the opportunity that he has fully earned. "I accepted my roles in the last couple of years, but I always thought I could play every day," Johnson said. "I tried in the off-season, with my work ethic on and off the field to prove it. I just felt like I had a lot more to offer. If I sat back and pouted and was angry and didn't get my work in, I would never have been ready when the opportunities arose."Every season since arriving in the majors, Johnson has either come off the bench as spot starter and injury fill, or platooned. The Cal-State Fullerton Titan is now being asked to leadoff every day with Lyle Overbay batting second vs. right-handers. Johnson hit .319 last year with 12 HR, 49 RBI, 86 runs, and 8 SB in 134 games. Source: Toronto Star |
