But we could have gone in a different direction, towards safety for instance: Draft Kenny Phillips. Safety is quietly (arguably) a position of need and he wouldn't be a huge reach at 21. I realize that the naysayers will point out that we will have drafted 3 safeties in 4 years as our top pick, but unfortunately we have to judge the situation differently as Sean Taylor is tragically deceased. He is going to be a good safety, there's no doubt, and Reed Doughty is servicable, not elite. I'll agree with mmford10 to the extent that I'm not yet sure that Doughty is a starter quality safety. He played like it for spurts last year, though I attributed that to him simply overachieving. However, at least one teammate thinks Reed Doughty has what it takes. Only drawback might be the Murton situation. Meanwhile, Evan Grant says the Rangers reduced their demands for Marlon Byrd but the Cubs still decided to pass. 11:41am: It's all Reed Johnson, all the time here at MLBTR. Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 says the Cubs will make a contract offer to Johnson once he clears waivers about twenty minutes from now. Cubs GM Jim Hendry has already been in contact with Arn Tellem, Johnson's agent. Matt Murton might be the odd man out if the Cubs complete the signing. This is not a big surprise - Johnson was a candidate to be non-tendered this winter. He had back surgery in April and is set to earn $3.27MM in '08. Blair speculates that the Jays may be inclined to listen to offers for Adam Lind.
