Summer Product Review: Reef Flip Flops
2008-06-03 02:32:00
I discovered Reef flip-flops about 10 years ago and I absolutely love them. As soon as we have the first warm day of spring I?m wearing mine outside and they are my number one footwear for the whole summer. I wear them everywhere ? I have shopped, partied, gardened, even hiked in them. I also use them instead of slippers for much of the year. Click to read more ...

PinoyBlogoSphere.com - The New Seven Wonders of Nature: Tubbataha Reef Camp
2008-05-19 12:08:00
Source: www.PinoyBlogoSphere.com - I’ve watched the documentary program of GMA 7 entitled “SISID” and I was really amazed on the underwater sceneries that they have featured there. It’s really uplifting to know that amidst the abuse of natural resources here in the Philippines, although not every part of it in general, there are still small oasis of paradise which we can really be proud of. In fact, three of our small paradise were nominated to be part of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. And you know what? As of the time I published this article, these three were on the top 15 of the most voted nominees, with the Tubbataha Reef leading at the 8th spot, followed by the Chocolate Hills at number 9 and Puerto Prinsesa Subterranean River National Park at the 15th place. The Poll for the New Seven Wonders of Nature is currently ongoing, and a single vote can really make a difference. Read more about the New Seven Wonders of Nature here… Thanks for subscribing to the PBS f...

Coral Reef Squadron red-flagged
2008-05-04 07:30:00
Coral Reef Squadron red-flaggedAs reported earlier about the artificial reef in Phuket, which was about to be set up tomorrow, the procedures had to be halted due to bad weather conditions and is currently postponed to November.PHUKET CITY: The sinking of 10 decommissioned military aircraft – nicknamed the Coral Reef Squadron – to create Thailand’s largest artificial reef has been postponed until November, Tourism Authority of Thailand South Region 4 Office Director Suwalai Pinpradub announced today.Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, K. Suwalai said that the strong winds and large waves that have arrived with the rainy season monsoon have now made it too dangerous to sink the aircraft in Bang Tao Bay.The operation was set to begin today and wrap up with Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat and Thai celebrities attending the final-day festivities on Monday.A date has yet to be set for the operation to continue, K. Suwalai said.In the meantime, the four Doug...

St. George Reef Lighthouse
2008-04-29 05:35:00
About about eight miles northwest of Crescent City lies another lighthouse, St. George Reef. This one is a littler harder to get to since it is on a rocky Island out in the Pacific Ocean. The light was lit for the first time on October 20, 1892 and continued to shine until 1975 when it was abandoned. To view the St. George Reef Lighthouse from land, go north on the road that hugs the coast in Crescent City. When you arrive at the airport, turn left on Radio Road and follow it to the beach at its end. This is Point St. George, and the housing used for the keepers when they were ashore is adjacent to the parking area. The St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society offers helicopter tours out to the lighthouse weather permitting.

New artificial reef in Phuket
2008-04-24 05:30:00
The ‘Coral Reef Squadron’ arrivesIn Phuket a new artificial reef, made up by defunct airplanes from the Vietnam and Korea wars, is about to be opened up. There seems to some controversy amongst Phuket's dive operators about the location of the artificial reef, see this discussion on ScubaBoard. For me, sitting on Koh Samui, I wish Samui or Koh Tao would get some artificial reef like in Pattaya with the HTMS Khram and the HTMS Koot and now in Phuket. Please read the following article as it appeared in the Phuket Gazette today;JUST PASSING THROUGH: One of the 15 flatbed trucks transporting the ‘Coral Reef Squadron’ passes through the Tah Chat Chai checkpoint on Sunday. MAI KHAO: Amidst great fanfare, a convoy of 15 flatbed trucks loaded with the remains of 10 decommissioned military aircraft arrived at the Tah Chat Chai checkpoint at 2 pm on Sunday after a three-day overland journey that began in Lopburi. The convoy departed from Koke Krathiem Air Force Base in Lopburi with th...

British students to conduct coral reef replanting in Padang
2008-04-06 02:36:00
Some 15 students of Cantebury College, London, Britain will plant coral reef seeds around Sikuai Island, Padang, West Sumatra, on Monday (April 7, 2008) during their six-day stay in the region, a spokesman said. The social activity would be held based on cooperation between tour operator "Sumatra and Beyond", marine tourist resort organizer of Sikuai Island and non-governmental organization (NGO) Minang Bahari Foundation, said Ridwan Tulus, the Sumatra and Beyond director here on Saturday. The coral reef seeds planting activity had become the primary tourism package in Europe, especially among British students, he told Antara. Thus, Sumatra and Beyond would carry out the package regularly to lure European students, especially from England, he stated, adding that the students would plant the coral reef seeds in shallow waters to help in conservation efforts. According to him, the coral reef seeds would be provided by the Minang Bahari Foundation which has a great concern about the co...

Reef?s ?Dram? flip flop - never be thirsty again
2008-04-01 15:03:00
Reef's 'Dram' flip flop - never be thirsty again Shoewawa regulars are probably wondering why we're showing you a picture of a flip flop - and not a particularly pretty flip flop either. Well, this is no ordinary flip flop: look closer and you'll see that this is, in fact, Reef's 'Dram' sandal - and it comes complete with a handy compartment to store liquid. This makes sense, I guess. I mean, we normally tend to wear thong sandals in warm weather/to the beach, and sooner or later you're going to get thirsty. Why not carry a refreshing drink in your shoe? Well, the answer, "because it's weird" is the first one that spings to my mind, but maybe that's just me. If you think these sandals are the best idea since the stiletto heel, you'll be sad to know that they're actually designed for men, but then again, if they have them in your size, no one will ever know... All individuals, corporations, schools, governments, and organizations are welcome and actively encouraged to participate in IYOR 2008.The International Year of the Reef or IYOR has a good and informative website which I hope you will visit. The slogan "strong reefs, strong islands" embodies two significant messages of the campaign; the need for future marine and coral reef projects as well as deriving lessons from the past. There are tips what you can do to preserve the reefs and educational materials amongst others.PADI's own Project Aware is involved as well.Have a look at their website, spread the word and get involved!Camille

Rabbit Fish To The Rescue Of The Reef
2008-03-28 05:26:00
While rabbits continue to ravage Australia’s native landscapes, rabbit fish may help save large areas of the Great Barrier Reef from destruction।The reason, say scientists, is the same in both cases – both rabbits and rabbit fish are efficient herbivores, capable of stripping an area of vegetation. However, in the case of the Reef, it is the vegetation that is the problem – and the rabbit fish, the answer.“When a coral reef is weakened or damaged through human activity such as climate change or pollution or by a natural disaster like a cyclone, the coral will usually recover provided it is not choked by fast-growing marine algae,” explains Professor David Bellwood of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and James Cook University.“The problem is that over the years we have fished down the populations of fish that normally feed on the young weed to such a degree that the weed is no longer kept in check, it can now smother the young corals and take over.
