McCain or Obama? How About This Referendum?
2008-09-22 11:13:00
-By Frank Salvato To say the least, there is quite an ideological and political gulf between John McCain and Barack Obama. So too, is there a great deal of difference between their running mates, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. On just about every issue examined during this interminably long presidential election cycle the two tickets stand ...
Referendum in Ireland: "NO" to the Treaty of Lisbon
2008-06-13 23:38:00
That's why democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried. The Irish voted "No" against the end of restrictions on abortion, and to keep the country?s traditional neutrality and the low tax rates responsible for the rise of the Celtic Tiger. Not against the Treaty. Now what?Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish.

Stuart Wheeler takes Government to court over Lisbon Treaty.
2008-06-09 08:00:00
Stuart Wheeler gets his day in court today. He intends to prove that Gordon Brown's refusal to allow us the referendum his government promised in their manifesto is:"Not only immoral but illegal, too . "This was a referendum the people of Britain were promised well before the last election, during it, and after it. "But instead of fulfilling that promise, Gordon Brown has tried to push the Constitution in via the back door by rebranding a document and presenting it as a completely different text. "This is a ridiculous argument. Leaders across Europe - including Valery Giscard d'Estaing, the author of the EU Constitution - have acknowledged, indeed almost gloated about the fact, that the Treaty is the Constitution in all but name. "Furthermore, regardless of what name it is given, the vast majority of the British public want a referendum on this Treaty as demonstrated by the results of a YouGov poll last month."I had to laugh at the response from the Foreign Office spokesman: "Hard...
Lisbon Treaty - Yes vote just leads in Irish poll.
2008-06-08 17:11:00
From William Hill:Punters & Politicians Left Scratching Their Heads Following Latest Lisbon Treaty PollThe Yes Campaign has a slender 3% lead going into the final few days before Ireland?s referendum on the controversial Lisbon treaty. The latest Red C poll in the Sunday Business Post has the Yes campaign sitting on 42%, the No?s at 39%, and the undecided?s at 19%.Earlier in the week a TNS/mrbi poll indicated that the opponents to the Lisbon treaty had a 5 percentage point lead over those in favour of it.The latest Red C poll has also had an effect on bookmakers betting on the Lisbon Treaty. William Hill now make a YES vote their 2-7 favourite, and offer odds of 5-2 for a NO vote. Prior to today?s poll the bookies had made the No?s 8-11 favourite, however, they were forced to reassess their prices after seeing the Red C Poll.William Hill?s Irish spokesman Tony Kenny commented ?It still looks to close to call? he continued ?We?ve seen a lot of money for both sides of the debate, ...
William Hill - All Irish money on NO to Lisbon Treaty.
2008-06-07 18:06:00
From William Hill:William Hill have dramatically altered their prices on the Lisbon treaty referendum following the latest opinion poll on the controversial EU proposals. The bookmakers previously offered odds of 11-2 for a NO vote, but strong support for the No campaign resulted in Hills cutting those odds to Even money, with a Yes vote now available at 8-11.The latest TNS/MRBI poll gave the No campaign a 5% lead. 35% said they were going to vote NO, 30% YES , 28% were undecided, and 7% said they were not going to vote.William Hill Irish spokesman Tony Kenny commented ?We originally offered odds of 1-10 for a YES vote, but all the money is coming for the NO side? He continued ?Right now the NO campaign seems to have all the momentum, but a week is a long time in politics, and we?re expecting to see a lot more twists and turns before the result is announced next Friday? The Irish referendum takes place on Thursday the 12th June, with the result announced the following day ? the super...
Irish odds on to vote NO in Lisbon Treaty referendum.
2008-06-06 15:42:00
William Hill are giving "even" odds for a YES vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum. Those of us opposed to the treaty will be glad to hear that the NO vote is "odds on" - 8/11. This could be down to the latest poll held on the Treaty. If you are Irish, please vote NO for us, because we were not allowed a referendum as we would vote against the Treaty.
Irish look set to reject Lisbon Treaty.
2008-06-05 22:47:00
Hat tip to Iain Dale. From the Irish Times:The Lisbon Treaty is heading towards a shock defeat with the No side now in the lead, according to the findings of the latest Irish Times/TNS mrbi poll.It will take an unprecedented swing in the last week of the campaign for the Treaty to be carried. The poll shows the number of people intending to vote No has almost doubled to 35 per cent (up 17 points) since the last poll three weeks ago, while the number of the Yes side has declined to 30 per cent (down 5 points). The number of undecided voters is still a significant 28 per (down 12 points) cent, while 7 per cent won?t vote. The massive increase by the No vote since the last poll has mainly come through gains among undecided voters but, even more ominously for the Yes side, it has lost some support to the No camp. While the final outcome is still in the hands of undecided voters, the clear momentum is now with the No campaign, and it will take a dramatic shift in public attitudes over the nex...

Irish Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty - Funny.
2008-06-03 21:51:00
I came across this on The Tap Blog. I had to post on here as it cheered me up so much. Fine Gael, the biggest Party in Ireland's pro-EU governing coalition erected this voting meter in a Dublin mall. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Can you imagine the scramble to turn it off when they realised what was happening?
Lisbon Treaty - Irish Referendum - End of Nations.
2008-05-28 08:15:00
I posted this video last month and seeing as the 12th of June Irish Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty is just around the corner, I thought it would be a good time to post it again:This is a must watch, eye opening video from the Wise Up Journal. From their website:We set out to make a video about the pros and cons of the Lisbon Treaty and found out to our horror the lies, manipulations and deceit behind the EU. From MEPs, legal experts and EU researches the true nature of the EU unfolded, how it really operates from behind closed doors and away from prying eyes. We discovered the massive power grab away from citizens and nations to the elites that is being proposed in this treaty. Most shocking of all was how our elected representatives are willingly handing us over to this emerging Totalitarian Superstate by deception , propaganda and outright lies. This video details how the structures of the EU really operate, what the full significance of the Lisbon Treaty is and how it is the end o...

Irish Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty 12th June 2008
2008-05-13 19:56:00
The date has been set for the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. The 12th of June could be the day the Irish save the UK from the EU superstate. The Irish government under their new Prime Minister, Brian Cowen are supporting the "yes" vote. However a yes result is not set in stone. In a recent poll 38 said yes, 28 no and 34 were undecided. A previous poll was even closer with only a 4 point gap between yes and no.It's clear that the strength of feeling is stronger amongst the "no" voters, and they are more likely to turn out on voting day. Here's hoping anyway.Come on you Irish beauties. Do Europe a massive favour and vote NO. Please!Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device
The EU - Help or hindrance for our farmers?
2008-05-10 17:10:00
From the Scotsman:The EU still takes more than two years on average to license a perfectly safe GM product. In the US, the average approval time is 15 months. Now the EU is once again in the news for delaying its approval of GM foods ? two maize crops and a potato with extra starch ? by passing the decision on to the European Food Safety Authority, causing consternation amongst those waiting for their authorisation. As consumers, we do not feel the impact of such time delays. But farmers, who are falling further behind in the world market as they are forced to feed their animals more expensive non-GM foods, are feeling this delay dearly. Scottish farmers are losing on average £20 for every pig slaughtered because of rising fuel costs and lack of access to cheap feed. There is a real danger that we will soon have no UK pig industry left. In the ten years from 1996 to 2006 the UK pig herd has fallen from 7.9 to 4.9 million. On the other hand, farmers across the world are feeding their ...

We DO want a referendum
2008-05-09 21:41:00
A daring man, Mr Stuart Wheeler, is taking the government to court for having broken their promise to hold a referendum on the Lisbon treaty and planning to drag us heels first into a complete and self-annihilating union with Europe. As such legal proceedings can be very expensive, he is now in need of additional funds. As this is a fight for our collective rights - to sovereignty and democratic rule - I hope that we'll be able to collectively contribute towards the associated costs.Call it ransom for the captives, tax on freedom or charity - the money that you will donate could be the best money you will have ever spent.Mr Wheeler's website can be accessed at: http://www.stuartwheeler.co.uk/-.

Lisbon Treaty referendum poll. Gordon Brown.
2008-05-08 22:50:00
With all the other trouble Gordon Brown is having at the moment, the Lisbon Treaty is not getting much coverage. A referendum should be our number one priority - anything that Gordon Brown has done will fade into insignificance when compared to what an all powerful EU will do. Is Gordon Brown refusing to allow a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty because:A) The Lisbon Treaty does not constitute a constitutional change.B) We will vote NO.C) Manifesto promises mean nothing to the listening Prime Minister.D) Ratifying the Lisbon Treaty will give even more power to Europe's political elite.E) He thinks that we the little people are too thick to understand the Treaty.F) He dreams of a socialist Super-State.G) B,C,D,E and F pollcode.com free polls

Maryland Chamber of Commerce Supports Slots Referendum

[Photo: Maryland Chamber Chairman Betty Buck, President of Buck Distributing Co., Inc.; Chamber President/CEO Kathy Snyder, CCE; and James W. Dyke, Jr., Esq., a Partner with McGuire Woods, LLP and member of the Maryland Chamber’s Board of Directors] The Maryland Chamber held a press conference today to announce that we support passage of the November slots referendum. Since 2002, the Maryland Chamber has supported carefully regulated slot machines in limited locations to fund public education. Marylanders are spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year on this form of entertainment outside the State. The Maryland Chamber believes that we should keep this money at home to help fund public education. We’ve joined together with the Maryland State Teachers Association and the Maryland Association of Counties as part of the For Maryland, For Our Future campaign to support passage of the referendum. Passing the slots referendum will help stabilize Maryland’s...
Tempelhof referendum
2008-04-28 23:34:00
After this weekend’s failed referendum, forced by Berliners wishing to keep it open, Tempelhof, the Berlin Airlift airport, used during the Cold War to support the Western part of the City, landlocked by the Soviets, will be closed in October. It’s reasonable: it’s too close to the City centre, surrounded by residential areas, and the runways are too short for modern jets. The terminal, one of the biggest buildings in Europe, built from 1936 to 1941 by Ernst Sagebiel (according to Albert Speer’s plan for rebuilding Berlin, or "Germania", the new world’s capital), should be preserved.Blogging in Luxembourg. Daily Referendum reaches one thousand posts.
2008-04-08 20:06:00
It's a big day for the Daily Referendum Blog. This is my one thousandth post. I think that I'll stop at one hundred thousand. The blog has come a long from my first post just 16 months ago. I get around 250 visitors a day, last year I was ranked 21st most popular Conservative Blog and 59th most popular political blog in Iain Dale's Guide to political blogging. Hopefully I'll do better this year. Currently my blog is also ranked 29th in the Wikio Political Blog rankings. That's enough bragging (though it's not too much to brag about), it's time to thank all of you who visit my blog and to ask that you continue to do so (pretty please).Onwards and upwards!

I'm back. Things have settled down in the Green household and the constant stream of visitors has slowed down to a trickle. Little Freddie weighed in at 7lb 6, looks just like his mum and is in good health. I'm over the moon and even Barnsley losing to Cardiff on Sunday has not dampened my spirits. I would like to thank you all for the good wishes left in the comments section.Right back to blogging!
Naples Waterfront Bridge Controversy Proceeds to Non-Binding Referendum

The latest news out of Naples is that the local populace - business owners, waterfront property owners, and landlubbers alike -  will be sounded out via a May 20th referendum on whether they would prefer to see a fixed bridge or moving bridge replacement for the existing, deteriorating swing bridge. The vote would be non-binding, but would help ...
Taiwan Pro-Independence Party Loses Election, Referendum
2008-03-22 17:18:00
BBC: Opposition?s Ma wins Taiwan pollBackgroundMa Ying-jeou of the Kuomintag party won Taiwan presidential elections, 16% higher than his nearest rival, Frank Hsieh of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. A referendum on whether Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, should join the United Nations under the name of Taiwan was conducted along with the presidential vote. The referendum failed because enough voters did participate, although a clear majority of those who voted were in favor. The opposition boycotted the referendum, and the United States did not support the referendum. The Kuomintag party (KMT, translated as Chinese Nationalist Party), is part of the Pan-Blue coalition of Taiwanese political parties that supports eventual reunification with the People?s Republic of China (PRC). KMT has been forced to tone down their rhetoric, and has been advocating the status quo: the People?s Republic of China being the official internationally recognized China, while Taiwan sti...
Roger Helmer MEP fined £600 for referendum protest.
2008-03-14 14:24:00
Roger Helmer MEP has been fined £600 for his part in the demonstration for a referendum in the parliament?s plenary session in Strasbourg in December. Only fourteen members were singled out by President of the parliament Hans-Gert Poettering MEP for punishment. Roger says:"I am considering whether to appeal (as I can, under parliamentary rules), and there are good grounds for doing so. So far as I am aware no MEP has complained of my behaviour in December."It's obvious to anyone who has seen footage of the demonstration that a damn sight more than fourteen MEPs were involved in the demonstration. So why single out these fourteen? One of those accused by Hans-Gert Poettering (Andreas Molzer, an Austrian non-inscrit MEP) wasn't even present on the day.It stinks.Full story HERE.
Lisbon Treaty Referendum - Spot the odd one out.
2008-03-14 12:30:00
The Lisbon Treaty passed through the House of Commons by 346 to 206 on Tuesday to give the bill a third reading. Now it is down to the Lords to grant the people a referendum on the treaty. The main argument for and against a referendum is this: Is the new Lisbon Treaty similar enough to the rejected EU Constitution to warrant a referendum? Here are some quotes on the subject - I hope the Lords will take these into account when making their decision:House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee."We conclude that there is no material difference between the provisions on foreign affairs in the Constitutional Treaty which the government made subject to approval in a referendum and those in the Lisbon Treaty on which a referendum is being denied,"Valéry Giscard d?Estaing, former French President and Chairman of the Convention which drew up the EU Constitution."They have taken the original draft constitution, blown it apart into separate elements, and have then attached them, one by one, to ...

2008-03-06 12:39:00
The Lisbon Treaty Referendum.Yesterday we saw our MPs - men and women we have selected to represent us - betray our trust as never before. And that's why I say to any who read this: Voters, never forgive them, for they know exactly what they do.248 MPs stood true to their promise to safeguard our interests in the running of this nation. 311 turned their back on us and put party allegiance before their constituents' wishes. Yesterday will be remembered as a day of shame for British politics. Trust in politicians was already at an all time low, yesterday it died.I hope those 311 who voted against the people have the decency to blush the next time they are paid.
Lisbon Treaty - MPs vote on a referendum - Result.
2008-03-05 19:40:00
MPs have just gone to division to vote on the EU amendment Bill, this vote will decide whether the people get to vote on the Lisbon Treaty in a referendum. There will need to be a large number of Labour and Lib Dem rebels for a referendum to be granted. There are rebels, the question is - are there enough?Already some Lib Dem MPs have been forced to resign from their front bench for defying the Lib Dem whip. Nick Clegg has ordered his MPs to abstain from the vote.Democracy in this country just died, the vote for a referendum was lost by 248 to 311.Or has it?MPs are now voting on the 2nd amendment put forward by Ian Davidson. His amendment also calls for a referendum on the EU Treaty, but also allows for a referendum on different subject.Answer? yes it has. The vote was again lost, this time by 247 to 311.The question is this: Who are the 78 wankers that didn't vote? 50 of them are Lib Dems, but who are the others that felt this amendment was not important enough to vote on.I knew t...
Lisbon Treaty - Lib Dem MPs are to stand down tonight.
2008-03-05 17:00:00
The fallout from Nick Cleggs ridiculous position on the Lisbon Treaty referendum as already started to settle. Sky News reports:Countryside spokesman Tim Farron, justice spokesman David Heath and Alistair Carmichael, who speaks on Scotland and Northern Ireland, will step down after they have voted on a Tory amendment to the Treaty which calls for a referendum. This will be a very long day for the Lib Dems. It could also be the beginning of the end of their party. UPDATE: Alistair Carmichael and Tim Farron have resigned.
Nick Clegg's referendum poll farce - Apples and oranges.
2008-03-03 19:04:00
Take a look at this apple. The slice represents the UK's membership of the EU. The slice has a pip, and that pip is our representative on the European Council. Each of the twenty seven EU member states has a similar slice. Even though we are individual slices, we are linked because we are all part of the same apple. Our pip is very important because it represents our country's interests and protects our sovereignty within the apple. The failed Constitution and now the Lisbon Treaty aims to join the 27 segments together to produce one big apple. The problem is this: Our pip would no longer represent our slice - it would become just one of the big apple's pips. In effect our part of the apple would be seedless, the pips make the decisions and the big apple no longer has a say and must obey the pips' rulings. That is a big step for our slice to take, that's why we were promised a referendum by all the major parties - and that is why we must have a referendum. Then along comes Lib De...
88% say: "I want a referendum" - Lisbon Treaty.
2008-03-02 16:21:00
The title of this post says it all. The results are in from the ten mock local referendums on the Lisbon Treaty. 152,520 people voted, with 133,251 demanding a referendum. The voters were also asked how the would vote: 89% said they would vote against the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. The I Want a Referendum (IWAR) campaign claim that the turnout is higher than that in local council elections. I could talk about this until I'm blue in the face, but the facts are simple: Mock referendums were held in ten marginal constituencies, the people voted by a vast majority for a referendum and an even greater majority said they would vote against the treaty. These mock referendums were totally legitimate and were carried out by Electoral Reform Services, a firm of independent election scrutineers recognised by the government and the UN. What is clear is that the MPs sitting in these constituencies have just been told that they will lose their seats at the next election. The people know t...
Lisbon Treaty Referendum - 319 is the magic number.
2008-02-16 14:11:00
I've been crunching the numbers to see how many Labour and Lib Dem rebels are required to win the vote for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Of the 646 seats in the house, a maximum of 637 are likely vote on the referendum (the Speaker and his deputies [4] don't normally vote, and Sinn Fein [5] don't have a vote). The only way to work this out without it getting over complicated is to assume all 637 will vote YES or NO. I'm going to divide the MPs into YES (in favour of a referendum) or NO (against a referendum) camps. I will add the known Conservative rebels [3] to the NO camp because it's almost certain that they will vote against a referendum. Everyone else will be assigned as per their party policy:YES Camp total 212.Democratic Unionist 9Independent 2Scottish National 6Plaid Cymru 3Conservative 190Independent Conservative 2NO Camp total 425.Labour 352Liberal Democrat 63Independent Labour 1Independent 1Conservative 3Social Democratic & Labour Party 3Respect 1Ulster Unio...
Lib Dem David Heath still faces a mock referendum.
2008-02-15 17:28:00
I was very pleased to read that Lib Dem David Heath will be defying the party whip by voting for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. It's a very brave decision and he could face disciplinary action for his heroic stance. However there is one little problem: David's constituency of Somerton and Frome has been targeted for a mock referendum by the "I want a Referendum" campaign. A campaign which I fully support. Obviously David's recent announcement to vote for a referendum has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works. David is asking why he has been targeted for a mock referendum given his stance. The Norfolk Blogger (Nich Starling) is asking if the campaign is just a Tory front seeing as it is still holding a mock referendum in David's constituency despite him being in favour of a national referendum.Being a Conservative I found Nich's post a little disturbing. I do not want this campaign to be used as, or seen to be, a Tory front. So I called the people at "I want a referendum" fo...
Those MPs who are about to vote for a referendum - we salute you.
2008-02-14 18:57:00
The time draws near to a vote in the house on the public's right to have a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Today we hear of Lib Dem Frontbenchers who are willing to support democracy by voting in favour. David Heath, the justice spokesman and Nick Harvey, the defence spokesman are in favour of a public vote, either by voting for a referendum or by abstaining. However the party machine is getting tough on rebels and has announced that: "Frontbenchers will be expected to follow the party line."If these brave Lib Dem rebels can hold true to their manifesto promise and their constituents, then just possibly LibDem Backbenchers will ignore the whip and vote with their consciences. This is a turning point in British Democracy. If we fail to get a referendum then this will give a green light to the political class telling them that they can do anything they damn well please and sod the little people (that's you and me bye the way).It would be preferable if those rebel MPs - both Labour ...
Miliband call for democracy - The cheeky sod.
2008-02-13 20:47:00
I could not believe the today's BBC headline: Miliband urges push for democracy. Surely someone is extracting the urine. How the hell can a man (term used loosely) who is denying the British public a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty dare to even mention the bloody word democracy? His government promised a referendum and the people want a referendum. The only problem for Miliband and his band of self serving mates, is that if the public were to be given a vote, they would in his opinion, vote the wrong way. So his boss Gordon Brown is simply not going to risk it.This is going to be the start of the end of democracy in this country. This Labour government have just confirmed that they can in fact totally ignore the wishes of the people and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it. To add insult to injury, they are set to back Tony Blair's bid to become the EU President - Tony bloody Blair, the same man they forced out of office, the same man they didn't think was ...

Apparently Frank Field, Kate Hoey, Gisela Stuart and Graham Stringer acted in quote: "uncomradely behaviour" at a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party tonight. Iain Dale called Gordon Brown and his gang Stalinist in a post this evening. He got a lot of stick for it from the Labour trolls - It looks like Iain wasn't that far from the truth.

An article in the Liverpool Echo is claiming that local Labour MP Frank Field could face suspension from the party for defying the government over the EU Lisbon Treaty. Frank will be accused of disloyalty for refusing to back down on calling for Labour's 2005 manifesto promise for a referendum to be honoured:"I will not back down on this. The demands follow a report that said parts of the Lisbon Treaty mirrored the abandoned EU Constitution. The Commons Foreign Affairs Committee said foreign policy in the treaty was the same as in the constitution, on which Labour promised a referendum. Labour MP Ian Davidson said it was "the start of the battle, rather than the end of the war". The Commons Foreign Affairs Committee has also accused the government of publicly downplaying the importance of some new EU institutions and roles. Mr Davidson, who will campaign for a referendum, has 18 Labour MPs backing his amendment, but said he expected support to build over the coming months as the Bill progressed through Parliament. 'Strong majority' He added: "We hope to get our message out to people in the country who will in turn tell their MPs that they do want a referendum so that by the time we come to the next vote in the committ...
