Work-A-Day Buddha
2009-08-26 20:57:00 Because of a meeting at work, I spent the last two days with a Buddhist priest. In our forty eight hours together, I asked him a lot about his faith.Fundamentally, he saw the world as a borderless garden where everyone is welcome and invited to plant seeds. He suggested that each of us find our best, most compassionate selves when we help nurture the seeds that others plant, when we recognize the good in others and help them.He said he believed that love and compassion existed within every person, that it was universal.?When you recognize the good in another person,? he said, ?they go on to recognize the good in someone else. It creates a ripple effect for a more peaceful world. In seeing the good in others, you polish the goodness in yourself.?The priest said he tried to approach every human interaction as an opportunity to help."How can I help you?" he liked to say.I got home late the first night, and kept K up late talking about the idea of trying to recognize the good in others a...

The Law of Averages
2009-08-14 03:49:00 A friend of mine was in town on business and we were able to get together for lunch.I first met him at a party when we were in college. It was a fraternity party where the "brothers" were all engineering students with severely enlarged cerebral cortexes.[I only went to the coolest parties.][Geeks Unite!]Anyway, it was the mid 1980?s and John had on a skinny, leather tie.I was instantly IN LOVE.I stalked this poor boy for several years until he finally quasi dated me and then broke my heart when he told me that, while he liked me very much, he did not LOVE me back.[Only it took him a really long time to say it because he used a metaphor about setting off forever in a canoe with just one person and how I might be the person for the canoe, but? (??)]Years later, after staying intermittently in touch, we actually became friends. Both of us ended our starter marriages around the same time.[Practice helps.]Though he was never a good match for me, he has been a very good friend and I am grat...

Is Palin-Hatred a Reflection of Some Gay Men?s Misogyny?
2009-07-08 09:24:00 Every now again, I have a brainstorm, an idea which just comes to me and it seems brilliant at the time. If it comes to me when I’m driving, I try to remember it so I can scribble it down when I stop. Occasionally by the time I stop, I find that the idea has ...

The Flawed Experiment: A Reflection on the Fourth of July
2009-07-03 11:27:00 I’ve posted this same brief post for the past few years around this time, in hopes of drumming up a bit of discussion regarding this national holiday. About five years ago I was reading the paper in a small town in Minnesota. I read an article by Congressman Mark Kennedy entitled: “The Great Experiment” which discussed the sacrifices many soldiers had made to make this country what it is today. I did not disagree with his article, I simply felt that he’d left some other important people and groups out. I felt the need to reply in this letter to the editor that you see below. I’ve left it unedited, but I’ll include further thoughts at the end. Surprisingly, the local paper published my letter the following week: The Failing Experiment I want to first of all thank Congressman Mark Kennedy for his article concerning this country’s “Independence Day.” There is certainly room for celebration and many of the historical facts he pointed out are worth noting and ...

On reflection, this probably isn't in the Constitution at all. But who can
2009-05-21 16:37:00 Don't you think it's ridiculous that we live in the 21st century, and that in this era, there are well over 100,000 different toppings for ice cream-- but you're still limited to getting your rental movies one way and one way only?I mean, hasn't anyone even read the Constitution? Why should I have to only get my movies by mail, or only get my movies by downloading, or only get my movies by going to the store? Why can't I sometimes stop by the store and rent a movie, and sometimes download one, and sometimes get them by mail? Why can't I, in short, have jimmies and nuts and hot fudge, if that's what I want? Why did we even bother electing Obama? That's the dilemma you've faced, up until recently: Either rent your movies at the store, and drop them off there, or get them by mail, and never be able to on the spur-of-the-moment decide to just go watch a movie. That is, you've faced that dilemma until BLOCKBUSTER acted and created what amounts to a cafeteria plan for rentin...
Mexico?s Swine Flu Crisis: A Time for Literary Reflection amidst Fear and P
2009-04-28 02:17:00 It is a strange image to see people roaming the streets with their faces covered by masks to protect themselves from this mysterious and ominous influenza outbreak. It seems like a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie. In ?28 days later? one had to beware of contact with infectious blood, in our case, we are paranoid of each other, no matter if it?s a friend or a stranger especially when they start sneezing or coughing. A common cold today equals ostracism in these troublesome days.Whether the whole level of fuss and panic is really necessary remains to be seen in the near future. Yet that it poses a tangible threat for most of us, especially if you are living in Mexico, is evident in daily life. Schools all across the nation have been suspended for a week; public events, including soccer games, are either canceled or take place behind closed doors to avoid spread of the virus among multitudes of people. The whole country is on its way of turning into a ghost town soon enough.Various...

Invested in the Idea of Obama:A Reflection on the Anti-Tea Party Animus
2009-04-25 23:07:00 Shortly after the success of the Tea Parties, while away from my computer, I pondered the alacrity of so many on the left and in the MSM to smear our movement, calling it Astroturf and dismissing our concerns. I had an insight on why these protests made so many so hysterical, so I picked up ...

Reflection on Day 2 of 2009 Bassmaster Classic
2009-02-22 18:42:00 Moving day at the Classic lived up to the billing. Some guys stumbled like Boyd Duckett, but a bunch of the anglers really stepped on the gas on Day 2. On day 1, Boyd had the loan 20lb bag, on Saturday there was a 20lb bag and three 22lb bags. For the most part, you needed to catch them better today then on Friday just to keep pace. Even though the air & water temps cooled, the cloud cover made the bass easier to harvest for most of the anglers.I am very impressed with Jami Fralick's consistency, looks like he has found a stellar area and has also been managing his fish. I some what expected to see him fade away much like Charlie Hartley did last year, but now I believe he will be right there at the end with a few other anglers. Other anglers like Kelly Jordan have eluded to catching their bags early and the going to new water, so we will see what pros have managed their fish well on Day 3. The bite sounds to be tougher on S...

Thanksgiving Reflection on Activerain in Black & White
2008-11-27 18:21:00 There is so much to be thankful for this year, it is hard to know where to start. So grab a cup of coffee and watch this Smilebox I made for all my Activerain friends here. Last year, I set a goal to meet 100 members of Activerain in person. Well, I far succeeded that goal. It was some of the highlights of the year for me to meet people at Inman Connect, Re-Bar Camp, KW Family Reunion and NAR in Orlando. I wonder if Jon Washburn the founder of Activeran has any clue what he created here? The relationships and friendships are fantastic. When you meet people there is such a connection, it is as if they were old college friends you hadn't see in years. If I have ommitted one, I apologize as there was no way to include everyone, and some when the show were missing were not there, as I must have not brought them in. Do your best to put back "conference money"in 2009. It will be so worth it to connect with computer friends face to face. Almost everyone included I have met face to fac...

The foil can be used to improve existing insulation or make a radiation refelector below a floor or behind your plasterboeard wall. two layers with a 2 cm space inbetween does a great deal. Some commercial suppliers like www.tonzon.biz offer similair foils. The total estimate of insulation foil from the Brussels marathon is about 5000m2, enough to give 10 small houses a thermal reflector and save a lot of energy. » original news

A Small Reflection On The Constant Leftist Call For Unity
2008-06-19 01:21:00 It is a demand for everybody to agree with them of course — and a threat to all dissent. Obama is the most notable practitioner at the moment. So we should not be surprised that the country which invented welfare legislation — Germany — still focuses heavily on unity in their national anthem: Einigkeit und Recht ...
Vesak Reflection on the Medical Profession
2008-06-10 10:49:00 Vesak Reflection on the Medical Profession by Nalin Swaris - The Island ' News Paper ?Physicians? as the very term implies deal with the body, which is subject to sickness, decay and death. As such physicians seem to be engaged in a Sisyphean task ? an absurd, but for many lucrative, preoccupation devoted to propping up what Shakespeare called "this muddy vesture of decay". But if we shed the devaluation of the body on the basis of an assumed dichotomy of body and soul or the body and a rebirthing identity consciousness in mainstream Buddhism, we will have an exhilarating perspective on human existence. It helps us to cultivate a holistic view of the human person as a totality of vital processes or synergies. Whatever our religion, ethnicity or social status all human beings are subjected to the paradoxical character of the human condition. We must all die. What ethics ...
Weekend Reflection- Too Much to Do So Little Time
2008-06-08 23:16:00 This week has been a nuts, crazy went by way too quickly kind of week. I worked Monday-Thursday at a store in Roseville. We got through the whole project a lot faster than expected. Tomorrow we are headed to Auburn. With the way gas prices are going I am not looking forward to the half hour drive every day. My husband figured it out by the end of the week it will cost me about $50 in gas to drive there and back. Hopefully we can get that store done as quickly as we did the one in Roseville. I offered to give a co worker a ride there and back if he could pitch in on gas but when he returned my phone call he hung up on me. Courtney finished the school year on Thursday. She also received the top academic award for her class. I am so proud of her! I can't believe that I can now say that she is in sixth grade. Ciara is quite the budding artist. She got a hold of some chalk and scribbled all over the television one day. Then a couple of days later instead of going to sleep s...

Apology, planning, reflection
2008-06-08 04:29:00 It's been a while that I have not posted in this blog. Shall I need to apologize to my readers? Perhaps 'Yes'. Blogging is a hobby. I ought not to have any responsibility at all whether I post or not. I am not compelled to write. No one is forcing me. Should I apologize? This time I say 'No'. Well, I would be ungrateful if I say no because I have to be accountable not just to myself but also to you. I should write, that's for myself. And I will continue to write, that's for you. Because you inspire me to write especially with your intelligible, sincere, honest, and sometimes harsh comments. The last time I posted was 22 May, and its 8 June. That's 2 weeks. Two weeks of thinking and reflecting what I ought to do in 2008-2009. I planned my life carefully, though plans may get failed. But as long as there is a plan, I can feel myself secured. Planning makes life easier. I set goals--writing goals. I promised myself to write 2 pages per day five days a week, from Monday to Friday...

Days That I Started to Turn Mature

Time For Reflection
2008-05-26 15:45:00 We interrupt this regularly scheduled program to talk to you about what today really means… Today we are going to go over the houses of our friends and family or maybe even just stay home while we fill up on hot dogs, hamburgers, and potato salad. While we are enjoying this great day that we have come to love so much, let’s not forget all the women and men who have fought and are still fighting for our country. We have lost 4082 since the war began and the numbers just seem to get higher and higher with each passing day. These are fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters - and while we’re out having fun we need to take a moment to think about them and why we really should be celebrating Memorial Day. It is a day to remember the people who have given their lives to keep our country safe. By all means, enjoy your day… and don’t eat too much! Weigh-in day is only 4 days away
Don Miguel Ruiz & 4 Agreements worth reflection
2008-05-18 03:44:00 Don Miguel Ruiz is a Toltec master who reminds us humans are conditioned to think and act based on systems of reward and punishment, external approval and rejection. To move beyond the image of perfection we create and imagine is out of reach, that causes us to reject ourselves and judge others, Ruiz invites us to make four agreements within ourselves. How many resonate with you? Why encourage new self-awareness? 1) Be impeccable with your word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using words against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in directions of truth and love. How often do you diverge? Where does this path take you?2) Don't take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dreams. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of nee...
Just Ask Her
2008-05-16 21:36:00 She planted herself in front of us this morning teetering on her twisted legs like a tree swaying in the wind. Her teeth trapped her bottom lip inside her mouth. With elbows locked, she held her thumbs and forefingers outstretched. Her remaining fingers curled into her palms giving her the appearance of a gunslinger. A strap around her neck held a laptop sized key board with a built in screen for reading digital text.Like most mornings, she stared at us with something like defiance or urgency? or something else.Upon encountering her, both The Mayor and The Rooster grabbed one of my hands and snuggled against my legs.Despite having drawn close, they were both wide-eyed with curiosity. They see her everyday but have never said anything about her.Though she?s a teenager, her mother drops her off at The Mayor and The Rooster?s daycare every morning, presumably because it opens and hour earlier than the high school.I think she has cerebral palsy, but I?ve never asked. She can walk but to co...

Reflection
2008-05-16 16:51:00 I was looking at myself in the mirror and was not exactly pleased with what I saw. After bearing a child, pregnancy and breastfeeding sure has taken a toll on my once slim body. Now that I've got the mommy figure, I realise how much difficult it is this time to lose the excess weight. Leptovox may be a quick fix solution but I want a program that I can take seriously and hopefully make a good habit out of it.

A Small Dose of Acceptance
2008-05-10 04:00:00 For the last seven months I?ve been a hermit, holed up on my own and keeping to myself.[You know, doing the whole grief thing.]Sometime in the recent past I noticed streams of stubborn, persistent sunlight sneaking through the slats of my down-turned window blinds. Curious, I opened the front door with squinted and adjusting eyes to see that my entire yard was full of people. At first I hurried back inside and shut the door. Oh, my GOD! Who ARE all those people and what are they doing in my yard?!!Gradually I went out among them. They invited us to their houses for dinners and play dates and we invited them back...They made us laugh. They have us out and about, walking around our neighborhood."Let's go on an adventure!" The Rooster says. I like thinking of our walks that way.The other day we were strolling up a quiet, neighborhood street hand in hand letting the perfect evening breeze billow all around us.I beamed, feeling happy.I thought about the new people in our lives and the acc...

Medical Femininity
2008-05-07 14:15:00 My friend was talking to her nine year old son about what he wanted to be when he grew up."How about being a doctor," she asked. Her son rolled his eyes."I CAN'T be a DOCTOR, Mom! I'm not a GIRL!!"She was stunned. That her son's experience of doctors is entirely female says a lot about the professional strides women have made.Still, the notion of progress is called into question in that it remains anathema for a boy to envision himself in a role he perceives as inherently female.

Weekend Reflection- Spiritual Growth
2008-05-03 18:09:00 This week was very busy but rewarding. I started my new job working as a merchandiser for Prism Retail Services. The job is very simple but fun. I met some nice people and am looking forward to next week. We had a parish mission at our church this past week. It was put on by Deacon Glenn Harmon. Even though every night was late and I had to get up at 5 am the following morning it was worth the sacrifice. This experience really helped me to grow spiritually and learn how to get closer to Jesus during this difficult time in my life. I learned about forgiveness, love and that God has a purpose for me. I may not understand what that purpose is right now but if I pray enough I will be able to listen to God and learn what that purpose is. The challenge I have had is trying to listen to what God is telling me. I have heard people say that they can hear God speaking to them in the quiet places in their heart. I don't know if I have to get closer to God to experience that or...

Body & Spirit
2008-05-01 13:05:00 Last Friday Elke and Michael invited us to dinner and afterwards they turned on a movie so that the short and loud people would go slack for a while. We had a fascinating discussion about what each of us wants to happen to our bodies after we die.[To hell with small talk!]Michael said he wanted to be buried in a cemetery next to Elke, but Elke wanted to be cremated and to have her ashes scattered.K was unsure and I was ambivalent."Why does it matter?" I asked. We talked about various deaths in each of our families and how they were handled.*****Michael recently buried his great uncle in a community cemetery where he's surrounded by other deceased friends and family members.Michael is comforted by the thought of this as his uncle's final resting place. He imagines his uncle at home in a place where his eternal neighbors are souls that he knew and loved throughout his life.*****Elke?s mother died of lung cancer three years ago.Bucking Jewish tradition, Elke honored her mother?s last ...
