Reform Treaty

Name and shame MPs voting for the EU Reform Treaty.
2008-01-20 07:50:00
First things first - I will be posting a list of all MPs who vote in favour of ratifying the EU Reform Treaty tomorrow. I hope that all those bloggers who, like myself believe that government are welching on their promise of a referendum, do the same. It would also be in the interest of the country if those people who read political blogs emailed the list to their contacts. Any MP voting for the EU Treaty will be neglecting their solemn duty to represent their constituents and they will be betraying the people who voted for them. Any MP behaving in such a manner does not deserve to be a member of parliament in a democracy, and I hope that they are never again allowed to work in politics after the next election. If your MP votes against your wishes on matter of such great personal and national interest, then that person is denying you your democratic rights.Today the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee has reported that the foreign policy in the treaty was virtually the same as in the ...
The Reform Treaty: Its Impact on the EU Institutions
2008-01-19 01:05:00
By Brendan Donnelly Introductory Comment Many institutional provisions of the Reform Treaty are framed, perhaps deliberately, in general, permissive or tentative terms. The real impact of these provisions will therefore only emerge in the course of their implementation. This implementation will be influenced by the personalities involved in the workings of the new structures and ...
The EU Reform Treaty: Small Step or Giant Leap?
2008-01-14 14:30:00
By Brendan Donnelly A striking feature of discussion about the European Reform Treaty agreed by the European Council in Lisbon has been the ability of commentators, confronted with exactly the same text, to disagree radically over the document’s significance. For some, it is a mildly disappointing document, lacking in focus and ambition; for others it is a springboard for exciting and far-reaching future developments; for yet others, particularly in the United Kingdom, it is a gigantic step towards the European superstate. To some extent, these different assessments are matters of conscious political positioning. Those eager for further institutional reform in the Union do not wish to accept Mr. Brown’s conclusion that no further institutional changes can be entertained for at least ten years. The Treaty’s godfathers, such as Mrs. Merkel and Mr. Sarkozy, are naturally bent on stressing its wide-ranging significance. Those eager in the United Kingdom to provoke a ...

EU Reform Treaty bit embarrassing for Miliband
2007-12-14 08:02:00
Cox thought this clip from the BBC was very amusing - it shows Miliband going on his own to shake the hand of the EU president at the signing of the Constitution Reform Treaty. You can see the president blatantly asking where Brown is hiding why Brown isn't there - Miliband even looks at his watch in a "Brit trying to talk to a foreigner" kind of a way to explain that he's on his way.Barroso, the president, is a well informed man (he has enough civil servants to sink a battle ship) and probably knew exactly where Brown was and why he wasn't there. He knew all the cameras were there, flashing away and recording the moment. It seemed as though he just wanted to stick the knife in.

Queen: EU Reform Treaty is to be debated in Parliament.
2007-11-07 09:22:00
The Queen announced in her speech yesterday that "Legislation will be be brought forward to enable parliament to approve the European Union reform treaty". The government are still arguing that the Treaty is an amending treaty, and does not require a referendum. The Conservatives (and many others) are saying that the Reform Treaty is almost identical to the previously rejected Constitution. With many of the leaders of the other member states claiming the same, it's going to be difficult for Gordon Brown to convince the majority of the public that want a vote, that one is not needed. The House of Lords EU select committee are calling for the publication of any governmental reports that have looked into the ramifications of signing the Treaty. The Lords have also asked the government to show how the Treaty differs from the failed Constitution. Good on the Lords, maybe they can maintain democracy even if Gordon Brown is trying to circumvent it. Sent from my BlackB...
