The Antitode For Test-Based School Reform
2009-11-12 02:13:00 It's not all Duncan and Gates out there in school reform land. Last week the Ford Foundation announced a $100M initiative to revamp secondary education in seven cities including Chicago (LATimes). The Ford Initiative is relatively big and challenges Race To The Top and NCLB in several regards. Jeannie Oakes is leading it and is a big proponent of comprehensive services, funding reform, and value measures beyond standardized testing. I'm not sure it's big enough to make a dent at the national level, or focused enough to make concrete changes locally (Annenberg, anyone?). But it's a clear sign that, for better or worse, the old guard isn't gone yet. Here's the press release for more details....

People: California Foundation Snags School Reform Guru
2009-11-05 16:12:00 First the Carnegie Foundation picked a new president Tony Bryk (instead of Linda Darling Hammond). Then the foundation came up with a whole new set of priorities (something about community colleges, I think). Now they're bringing John Ayers, one of Chicago's best-known education connectors out to make things really work. In Chicago, Ayers was longtime head of LQE, a pro-charter nonprofit, and then helped with Greg Richmond's National Association of Charter School Authorizers. Most recently, he helped launch Union Park High Schools, an effort to bring unionized charter schools to Chicago. Bryk and Ayers know each other from the bad old days when they worked on the Chicago Consortium on School Research, a quasi-independent research outfit that other cities like NYC...
Health care reform: who?s your daddy?
2009-10-20 21:39:00 [From Pragmatos] This piece by Robert Reich lays out the worst problems with the current health care legislation. He’s right, of course, but it seems to me a safe assumption that the administration will cave on whatever they need to in order to pass a bill and claim victory. I could be wrong, of course—maybe Obama’s ...

Schools as Important as Health Reform?
2009-09-15 16:05:00 I know that medical reform is necessary to save lives, but as a retired educator I am as worried about the gutting of American education by our current economic crisis. Education ultimately saves lives as well — those who most need it if deprived are likely to end up criminals and jailbirds whose lives are ...
Health Care: Where?s the Reform?
2009-09-14 16:32:00 Had he stopped after five minutes, we all would have signed up. Who needs the Fed anyway? Ignoring that minor self-adulation, ...

The President on Health Care Reform
2009-09-10 16:19:00 In a nutshell, here are the President?s goals for health care reform: [C]onsumer protections for those with insurance; an exchange that allows individuals and small businesses to purchase affordable coverage; and a requirement that people who can afford insurance get insurance. I support these goals and I think the President?s willingness to compromise and to speak candidly ...
Labor Day march for immigration reform
2009-09-07 15:00:00 On this Labor Day, think about who carved up the beef you are grilling or who picked the fresh vegetables you are tossing in your salad. It's likely that work was done by people who work in the shadows - undocumented workers. Labor Day also is also a day to remind our political leaders that we need comprehensive immigration reform. Those who have contributed to this country should be given a chance to become legal permanent residents.Supporters of immigrant rights are rallying Monday in Chicago to send this message. At 11 a.m. Monday they will start marching from Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St., to the Federal Plaza downtown. This march also is indicative of a growing frustration in the Latino community and...
Sabotaging Medical Reform?
2009-09-05 14:09:00 Medical reform under Truman was sabotaged by the American Medical Assn. Obama's health reform fudge
2009-08-25 15:19:00 Maybe President Barack Obama, instead of portraying opponents of his version of heath-care reform as liars, should cast out the mote in his own eye. From him and his White House has flowed a never-ending stream of misinformation, disinformation, exaggerations and just plain baloney. Take the oft-repeated claim that 50 million, 60 million or whatever -- take your pick -- Americans have no health insurance, as if our uninsured population is expiring in the nation's gutters because no one (read: Republicans) cares. But what the Obama and Democratic operatives don't tell you is the whole story, and by omitting it, they are themselves lying. Here are the facts:...

2009-08-16 20:33:00 I support health care reform because I think the current system is unsustainable. Healthcare Reform: Separating Fact from Fiction
2009-08-13 15:33:00 Fiction makes great story, doesn't it? I love a good beach read...suspense, colorful characters and drama. However, I don't care for it in my news and especially not when we're trying to make big decisions regarding the health of my patients, my family and myself. Dr. Tim Johnson on ABC has been doing a nice job of distinguishing the real facts. You've known him a lot longer than you've known me and I can't really do any better than what he's been broadcasting. So I'm going to refer you directly to this resource. This is the one to watch, folks. Some of what you're hearing is right up there with the legend of the Jackalope. Whee!!!!...
Health Care Reform..."Use your Heads"
2009-08-11 19:39:00 My grandmother used to say this to me, and I bet some wise member of your family has said it to you:"Use your head for more than a hat rack."I am absolutely dumbfounded by the gullibility of the American populace. How can anyone believe, in any part of their rational brain that there will be "death panels" in Obama's health care reform? What planet do you live on?! This is AMERICA! I can't believe the horseshit that citizens are willing to embrace & promote without question when it is so utterly ridiculous. Next thing we will here is that the Obama plan allows for a version of Soylent Green to feed the hungry masses. Insanity!Attention right wing maniacs!Social Security & Medicare are SOCIALIST by definition, and seen by most as entitlements of a leading democratic nation. Why aren't you declaring anarchy over these? Why aren't you demanding that these programs, in the name of Democracy, be ended immediately?! How is it you are so blinded by hate that you can't ...
Whitehouse Sells Healthcare Reform To The Twitterverse And Beyond!
2009-08-11 15:22:00 Obama promised transparency during his presidential campaign. He is keeping that promise with the current push to lock up legislation on healthcare reform by using social media as his communication tool of choice. A strong proponent of social networking for the 21st Century, the Whitehouse reaches out to the 'wisdom of crowds!' to place the debate front and center.
Right-Wing Echo Chamber Threatens Health Care Reform
2009-08-11 14:49:00 Photo credit: AP photo by Steve Helber Remember when the Bush administration had to "sell" the American public on the Iraq War? I always thought that was a strange term: "sell the public." As if we are a skeptical dad trying to buy a new washing machine from Wal-Mart, saying to the salesman, "Well, I like this whole getting-back-at-the-9/11-guys feature but will it keep my gas tank full as well?" One of the methods Dick and Bush used to "sell" us that crock of excrement was to leak to the New York Times that they had frightening intelligence on Saddam Hussein's WMD program, and then get on television and say, "Even the New York Times is reporting on Saddam...

Grassley uses Kennedy's cancer to create more fear over Health Care Reform
2009-08-06 19:13:00 The GOP is fighting tooth'n'nail now as Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) uses Ted Kennedy's advanced age and his brain tumor to fearmonger against Health Care Reform legislation. Now it's true that "rationing" may turn out to be a problem if reform is passed, especially with the need for more doctors and nurses in this country. But the GOP has no concern that for millions of non-wealthy Americans,

Republican Leadership Stakeout Health Care Reform PODCAST VIDEO TEXT
2009-07-29 23:53:00 Republican Leadership Stakeout Health Care Reform PODCAST MP3 9.67 mb.FULL TEXT Transcript: Conference Chairman Pence: Good Morning, everyone.I'm Mike Pence, House Republican Conference Chairman, and we just concluded our weekly meeting of the House Republican Conference, with a special emphasis today on the debate over health care reform here in Washington, D.C. House Republicans support health care reform. It'll lower the cost of health care for every American and in particular, it will lower the cost of health insurance to small businesses, family farmers and working families. The Democrat plan for health care reform amounts to a government takeover of health care in this country, paid for with more than a trillion dollars in higher taxes and it must be opposed. Under the Democrat plan, according to independent analysis, you'll probably lose your health care and you might just lose your job.Rep. John Boehner, Rep. Marsha Blackburn , Rep. Eric Cantor, Gov. Haley Barbour, Rep. C...
Leaders call for immigration reform at NCLR conference
2009-07-26 17:55:00 I'm at the National Conference of La Raza (NCLR) Conference this Sunday morning in Chicago. This is one of the leading Latino civil rights organizations in the United States. It's like a Latino version of the NAACP and has been around since 1968. Each year they hold an annual four-day conference in a different city.During a panel on the progress of comprehensive immigration reform several national leaders spoke about the chances of passing a bill in Congress this year."We cannot continue to survive as a society with three classes of workers, "said Eliseo Medina with the Service Employees International Union. "We need to be sure every worker in the United States has the same rights and responsibilities as everybody else."Since...

Health Care Reform: Not Imperative?
2009-07-16 07:18:00 Well, you knew it was only a matter of time until the press started covering the court of public opinion - meaning polls. This story came out last night from the Houston Chronicle entitled, "Poll shows falling support for health care reform." It seems as if the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Zogby International - have found that public support for congress and health care reform seem to be declining. The authors conducted an online poll that found 50 percent of respondents oppose a bill introduced by U.S. House Democratic leaders this week that would overhaul the system and pay for it by raising the taxes of the wealthiest Americans. Forty-two percent said they support the bill. Now, I know what people say at this point - it's bad data - who was the polling sample of - blah, blah, blah. One poll says this and another poll says that - who do you believe? It doesn't matter who you believe. It matters who the people inside the beltway believe as they start to ...

Where do your Senators stand on health care reform?
2009-07-15 21:39:00 Healthcare reform legislation is ready for its closeup in the U.S. Senate. And although the House seems to recognize the need for action right now, members of the Senate are dragging their collective ass. As always, it’s up to us. Get your senator on the record about the specifics of a public healthcare option. If Senator Nelson and Senator Martinez are going to help pass a robust public healthcare option, available to everyone in America, they will do so only because we demand it. Those outside Florida should get involved as well. Ask your Senators: Do you - 1. Support a public healthcare option as part of reform? 2. Support a public healthcare option that is ready on day one? 3. Support a public healthcare option that is national, available everywhere, and accountable to our government? 4. Support a public healthcare option that has the clout to establish rates with providers and big drug companies? See what they say. Our health depends on it.
What Reform Types Think About Recent Changes
2009-07-08 16:00:00 A centrist Democratic think tank and PAC says that Illinois is one of the leading states when it comes to "stimulus-inspired pro-reform legislative action" around the country:"In the wee of hours of June 1st, the Illinois state legislature answered Duncan's call and ended its session by approving 45 new charter schools for Chicago, 5 of which would reserved for high school dropouts, and an additional 15 charter schools for the rest of the state. As a result, about 13,000 students now on charter school waiting lists or in otherwise low-performing schools will be enrolled in high-quality charters subject to stricter accountability requirements than other Illinois schools."Now Illinois just has to take care of its inequitable funding system and improve...

The advisor notes, "With health care on the front burner in Washington, these biotechnology ETFs may finally be ready to pop.""Investors in health care should think outside the realm of traditional pharmaceutical companies and health insurers. Those sectors are each facing headwinds that make stock picking difficult."In addition, several big pharma companiesare desperate to reload their empty pipelines in the face of increased competition from generic drug makers. Acquiring a smaller biotech firm is the easiest way for a pharma giant to find a potential new blockbuster drug."The best way to play the government-sponsored health care boom is through biotech ETFs. Today, we focus on the two that should be on everyone’s watch l...

Obama begins talks on immigration reform
2009-06-25 16:17:00 President Obama plans to meet with Congressional leaders today to discuss long-awaited immigration reform. Whether or not they will pass a bill this year remains doubtful. But conservative Republicans and even some Democrats are not convinced their constituents will support immigration reform under the current economic conditions. But there are some convincing economic arguments for immigration reform. If you legalize people who are already working here, they will have to pay taxes. One 2006 study by the Congressional Budget Office estimated revenues would increase more than $66 billion over 10 years, wrote Frank Sharry the founder and executive director of America's Voice. The Immigration Policy Center estimates that undocumented workers make up 5 percent of the workforce. So bringing those people into...

Obama calls for immigration reform
2009-06-21 15:00:00 President Obama is finally speaking publicly about immigration reform. He addressed the Esperanza National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast and Conference, the largest Hispanic faith-based evangelical network in the United States, on Friday in Washington, D.C.The event didn't garner a lot of press but there was a good story on CNSNews that said Obama would work for immigration reform and fulfill his campaign promise."We also know that keeping this promise means upholding America's tradition as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants," Obama said. "Those things aren't contradictory; they're complementary. That's why I'm committed to passing comprehensive immigration reform as president of the United States." The problem is Obama didn't say when. Hispanic organizations want him to take action as soon...
