Obama: leading from behind on reform
2012-01-25 23:05:00
Maybe it’s just that he’s waiting for others to craft the reforms so he can see how people react before signing on to anything. This way, he accrues the benefit of supporting a popular reform without the political risk of backing a proposal which might alienate his base. I endorsed Jon Huntsman for President, in ...

Paul Ryan Unveils Comprehensive Reform Package
2011-12-08 03:26:00
WASHINGTON ? This morning, Members of the House Budget Committee introduced a comprehensive package of ten legislative reforms designed to help repair the broken budget process. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan issued the following statement upon release of these reforms: ?The federal budget process is broken. Washington stumbles from budget crisis to budget crisis, with little to no oversight of how government spends hardworking taxpayers? money. The incentives currently favor those who want to spend more, and the result is a crushing burden of debt that is hurting economic growth today and threatening economic prosperity tomorrow. ?I?m pleased to join a team of reformers at the House Budget Committee committed to repair the broken budget process. My colleagues at the Committee have put forward 10 proposals designed to strengthen spending controls, enhance oversight, and increase transparency. These reforms mark an important first step to getting our arms around the prob...

Update: More Reform-Side Questions About SB7
2011-06-07 23:23:00
Remember a little while ago when I wrote about how there were some questions about just how far SB7 went in terms of changing the realities of Illinois schools? Well, some of the same questions are being raised again -- from reform-minded DFER, the pro-charter, anti-LIFO folks who are operating in several states but not (yet) in IL. In a just-published blog post, DFER's state legislative director notes that SB7, combined with SB315, comes to roughly 150 pages of legalese but may not actually lead to the changes and objectives its advocates have identified. In particular, it notes, the LIFO reforms listed in the bill aren't guaranteed to take effect, and can be replaced by an alternative method --...

From the office of Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R, ILL)... WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-11), last night appeared on "America's Nightly Scoreboard" on Fox Business to discuss the Senate Democrats' failure to produce a budget or to work with House Republicans to save Medicare less than two weeks after the bi-partisan Medicare Trustees produced a report that said Medicare will be exhausted five years earlier than anticipated. Kinzinger also discussed job creation in Illinois. On whether Senate Democrats plan to address entitlements The big key is it's been 755 days since Senate Democrats have passed a budget....
Pension Reform in Illinois: A Hard Job That Springfield Wants to Ignore

Important Information About Ill. GOP Reform Bill
2011-04-26 19:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Doug Ibendahl of RepublicanNewsWatch.com has been a leading advocate of the current iteration of a bill that would give Illinois' Republican voters the opportunity to actually vote in the leaders of their own party. It is currently called SB35 but has been for sometime identified as SB600. SB35 would reverse the way the members of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee are placed on the governing body of the state party. Currently these folks are appointed to their positions by the affirmation of all the state's local committeemen. The actual voters have no direct say. Curiously enough, the Democrats do have direct elections of their central committeemen but Republicans do not. Recently a state representative contacted...

Can Democrats reform New York, Illinois and California?
2011-01-04 20:21:00
The Wall Street Journal doesn't hold out much hope for Illinois. In an editorial called "The Blue Men Group," it said: What are the prospects for genuine reform? They are probably the worst in Illinois, where Mr. Quinn and the Springfield Democrats were returned to power despite the national GOP wave and are intent on having their way. They are now in a lame duck legislative session pushing the tax increase to close a $13 billion deficit out of a $30 billion or so general fund budget. Illinois, along with New York and California, once were the engines driving the U.S. economy. But now all of them are mired in financial crises. ...[I]n recent years they have all shed businesses,...

SB600: Litmus Test for Party Reform (By Cedra Crenshaw)
2010-12-07 13:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston In the 2010 midterms, Cedra Crenshaw made a splash as a great independent Republican candidate for the Illinois State Senate (43rd District). She was quickly confronted with the power of the Democratic Machine and made all too well aware of the limitations of the Illinois Republican Party. Cedra recently wrote a great piece on SB600, a bill that would allow Republican voters to vote in their own leadership on the Illinois Republican State Committee (currently, insiders appoint these members and voters have no choice)....

Social Justice vs Conservative View of School Reform
2010-11-20 04:08:00
Here is the progressive social justice point of view for school reform:Principles of School Reform:1. *Public schools are responsible to the community, not to the marketplace.2. *Schools must be actively multicultural and anti-racist, promoting social justice for all.3. *Curriculum must be geared to learning for life and the needs of a multicultural democracy.4. *All children and all schools must receive adequate resources.5. *Reform must center on the classroom and the needs of children.6. *Good teachers are essential to good schools.7. *Reform must involve collaboration among educators, parents, and the community.8. *We must revitalize our urban communities, not just our schools. Here are better more free market  ideas for school reform that is in direct contrast to the socialist social justice...

Governor Lynch is running for re-election claiming that New Hampshire is safer. Unions Destroy Calif. Pension Reform Bill
2010-08-21 20:01:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Like most bills, the legislation meant to reform California's failing public pension system started out stronger than it ended up. But unlike most bills the final bill has been so gutted, so defanged, that it leaves the pension system in a worse mess than it was when the bill was introduced. Not surprisingly unions are the culprits. One of the things that the bill was supposed to stop was the practice of "pension spiking." This is the practice of government workers getting a sudden raise in position, salary and benefits just as they are about to retire. This sudden raise, often instituted only weeks or months before retirement, allows the employee to retire at a higher...
Will Financial Reform Increase Mortgage Rates?
2010-08-21 14:10:00
Mortgage rates are at absolutely stupid levels right now - the lowest in decades. Bankrate.com is reporting 4.51% for 30 year fixed mortgages and 3.51% for 5 year ARMs. Recently, these rates have been depressed by the United States' reputation as a safe haven in a time of increasing uncertainty in Europe. However, do these rates accurately reflect the risk associated with loaning money to the US homeowner? No way! The only reason rates can be this low is that the US government is still insuring these mortgages and securitizing them through the actions of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But how much longer can this go on?...

(See the details here and below)From 2007 to 2009, Lisle's obligations to its police pension fund alone have increased by 21 percent. And Lisle is not alone as the state and local governments struggle to deal with skyrocketing pension costs. The problem is partly of their making and partially the states, but it is no irony that now they're in this fix together. Lisle's...

2010-07-16 17:45:00
One of the big complaints from financial analysts and my grouchy neighbors during these tough economic times is that mortgage lenders caused a lot of the country's current financial problems by passing out mortgage loans to borrowers who didn't have the financial strength to pay these loans back.Lenders gave out mortgage money to anyone with a pulse, the complaint went, even if they had lousy credit scores and high levels of debt.Well, a new report from the CMPS Institute -- an organization that trains and certifies mortgage bankers and brokers -- suggests that it might soon become far more difficult for borrowers to qualify for a mortgage loan. The institute blames Congress (who else?) and the massive financial reform bill that...

Professor Simpson writes: In May, Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica introduced a series of amendments to help curb unethical and corrupt practices. The amendments would prohibit Cook County government employees from serving as a lobbyist for any entity other than Cook County. Congress has been working on the largest serious proposal for an overhaul of the regulation of financial markets since the Great Depression.Unfortunately, it's not really reform if we want to exempt things left and right. Things like auto dealerships from a consumer protection agency.Senator Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican, said "They [auto dealers] are the quintessential Main Street business in the country." He continued his comments saying "There's not a single auto dealer on Wall Street." Hey, uh, Sam, ya got a minute? What about GMAC? Not exactly an auto dealer, but it provided 75 percent of financing of GM dealers before it technically became a bank in an elbow rub deal with the Federal Reserve.Sam, Sam, wait up! I checked, there is an...
Will Immigration Reform Negatively Impact Golf in Arizona?
2010-05-20 14:38:00
Tourism and golf bring hoards of vacationers to Arizona but, with tightened security measures being imposed in the form of the new S.B 1070 law, will boycotts leave Arizona golf in a hazard? And, who will help maintain the golf courses if all of its 'illegals' are deported? Many immigrants coming to America from Mexico are Hispanics seeking a better life for themselves and their families and will take jobs that no one even wants. In the case of Scottsdale, an upscale tourist community, "the city has relied on Mexican labor from its initial founding," states John Harner with the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. "Somebody has to do the physical work." On the other hand, as posted on the Laura Ingraham website, "Arizona's illegal immigrant population is costing the state's taxpayers even more than once thought -- a whopping $2.7 billion, according to researchers at the public interest group that helped write the state's new immigration law." California, once...
Rep. Waxman Slips in 'Bad Vitamin' clause into Wall Street Reform
2010-05-03 19:31:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Nothing says Washington crookedness like a congressman slipping a clause into a bill that has absolutely nothing whatever to do with the main purpose of the legislation. Here we have just another cynical, corrupt bargain made in Washington D.C. with the effort of Henry Waxman (D, Ca) who slipped a little clause into the Wall Street "Reform" bill that is little else but an attack on the healthfood industry. This provision would give Congress more control over all health supplements and vitamins in America and likely lead to many of these businesses shutting their doors. So often Congress acts like the little kid with his mom in the grocery store. While mom is putting fruits,...
