Foreclosure refugees head for O.C. apartments
2008-04-28 09:05:00 The folks at Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Orange County may be seeing the first wave of refugees from foreclosures hitting the local apartment market. Kelly Rogers, director of education at the credit counseling service, says there was a noticeable jump in people calling the office for credit counseling help early this year. Their problem: After losing their homes to foreclosure, their credit was shot and landlords were reluctant to rent to them. And it’s not just people foreclosed in O.C. looking for apartments here. “A lot of people from the Inland Empire, who work in Orange County, are coming back to Orange County to rent,” Rogers says. Rogers says she understands both sides when it comes to creditworthiness of people who’ve been foreclosed. She’s in the process of renting out her one-bedroom, one-bath Fullerton condo so she and her husband can move into a bigger place they just bought. “As landlords now, we’ve really started...

News: Sudanese Refugees Stranded in Israel
2008-02-10 17:06:00 Some 1,000 African asylum-seekers, including over 200 women and children, are being detained in Ktsiyot prison in Israel's Negev desert. Some have been held for up to six months. In late September 2007, all newly arrived African asylum-seekers were moved into tents within the prison grounds. Activists from various Israeli advocacy groups have begun to look into prison conditions, being appalled by "harsh conditions" in the camp:"The nights are extremely cold in the desert, yet there is no heating in the tents. The wind simply blows through them. There is no warm water to wash the children, whose ages vary from three weeks to 18 years. At least 16 are under two years old."The women and children are still being held separately from their husbands, despite the prison authority's claim that moving the asylum-seekers to the tent camp was intended to allow for family reunification. There are no social workers to supervise or assist the children, many of whom have undergone severe trauma...

U.S. admits more Iraqi refugees, but pace slow
2008-02-05 06:04:00 By Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States took in 375 Iraqi refugees last month, the State Department said on Monday, a small gain over previous months but still below the pace needed to reach its own target of 12,000 for the year. Refugee groups expressed disappointment and said Washington should be doing more to help solve a crisis affecting millions of Iraqis since the U.S.-led invasion in March, 2003. Over 2 million Iraqis have fled to neighboring countries such as Syria and Jordan. Many fear sectarian violence at home, or retaliation because they worked for the U.S. government or other Western organizations. U.S. officials said they could still meet their goal of resettling 12,000 Iraqis in the United States by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, even though they have only admitted 1,432 Iraqis in the four months since they set the target. "This is a tall order but it remains attainable." said James Foley, the senior coordinator on Iraqi r...

Liberal Refugees Reportedly Flooding Canada
2008-01-01 21:43:00 Subject: liberals fleeing From the Manitoba Herald (a very underground paper) The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in recent weeks, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. Recent actions by President Bush are prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O'Reilly. Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. "I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn," said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. "He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. ?When I said I didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?" In an ef...

Give us your tired, your poor, your Iraqi refugees. . . What? Wait a minute
2007-12-29 02:36:00 The first entry in Scholars & Rogues’s 2008 Wish List for the World Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have fled the carnage and poverty that our intrusion into their affairs has unleashed. They’ve been admitted to two countries ill-equipped to accommodate them: Jordan and Syria. Meanwhile, the US has kept its borders closed to all but a few token Iraqis. This past September, though, perhaps in response to the heat it’s been taking, the State Department created the position of Senior Coordinator for Iraqi Refugees for one John Foley. The stated intent is to speed up the process of allowing Iraqis to immigrate to the US. But there’s a catch — two actually. One, vetting each applicant, expected to consist of interviews with a series of US officials, could take between four to six months. So much for speeding up the process. Presumably, State wants to guarantee that members of murderous militias are culled from the ranks of prospective refugees. But how ...

Andrew Sullivan: Ron Paul's Republican Refugees
2007-12-20 04:15:00 Andrew Sullivan hits the nail pretty much on the head. Many mainstream conservatives are taking a long hard look at Ron Paul because they are fed up with the current Republican administration. Now whether that will translate into hard votes is yet to be seen. But even this much should be worrying the neo-cons currently in control of the Republican party. And if not them then the rank and file Republicans have to see what George Bush is doing to trash their party. ~RJH Andrew Sullivan article link Ron Paul's Republican Refugees19 Dec 2007 04:46 pmEzra makes a valuable point:Paul's candidacy is an indictment of the system, not an argument for who would best administer it.Peter Suderman asks:What's the breakdown of issues that matter to his supporters, and after the campaign is over, are there lessons to be drawn for other candidates or issue-oriented groups? Refugees Caught Between Deportation and Death Threats
2007-12-07 01:33:00 by Dahr Jamail & Ali al-Fadhily BAGHDAD, Dec 6 (IPS) - Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis driven out of their country by violence are now faced with detention abroad, or a homecoming to death threats. More than two million Iraqis, in a population of about 25 million, have taken refuge in many countries. Only a few have won official status as refugees. Most refugees in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and many other countries stay on as illegal residents, facing threats of deportation and imprisonment. "To deport an Iraqi refugee is to issue a death warrant," Ali Jassim, an Iraqi journalist recently deported from Lebanon told IPS in Baghdad. "The Lebanese authorities are applying regular migration rules to Iraqis, meaning that most Iraqis in Lebanon will be deported." The Human Rights Watch report titled 'Rot Here or Die There: Bleak Choices for Iraqi Refugees in Lebanon' released Dec. 4 says Lebanese authorities are arresting Iraqi refugees who have ...
The Faceless And The Dead - The Guardian And Iraq's Refugees
2007-12-07 01:14:00 by Media Lens “See The World Through Their Eyes” For several months now, non-UK visitors accessing the Guardian website have been shown an endlessly revolving animation in three segments that would not look out of place on FAIR, ZNet, or indeed Media Lens. The second segment shows a nervous-looking woman in traditional Arab dress with intense flames reflected in her eyes. The third has two grief-stricken women, again in Arab dress, with one carrying a frightened child - their images are reflected in a soldier’s goggles. The animation ends with the words: “See the world through their eyes. The Guardian Weekly Global Network (theguardian weekly.co.uk)” These images are shown hour after hour, week after week, to people visiting the site. This surely is a newspaper subjecting Western policies to fierce critical analysis. It must be focussing relentlessly on Iraqi, Afghan and other civilian suffering as a result of these policies. But in reality, the Guardian has a lon...
Flood of Returning Refugees Overwhelms Iraqi Government
2007-12-05 16:13:00 The positive news coming out of Iraq is encouraging Iraqi refugees to return to their homes. An estimated 25,000 Iraqis have come back since mid-September and the Iraqi government is yelling, “King’s X! King’s X! King’s X!” Ok, they didn’t really say that. That’s what my high school gym coach would say if he was running Iraq right now though: “In reality, the ministry cannot absorb a return on that (large) scale,” Iraqi Migration Minister Abdul-Samad Rahman told a news conference. “If the influx is huge, then neither the ministry nor the entire government can handle it.” At the same time, he appeared to take issue with U.S. and U.N. assertions that security remains too fragile for Iraqis to come home in big numbers. “I am not trying to defend the government or lure Iraqi families to come back, but we must tell the truth: the security situation is 90 percent stable,” Rahman said. “The rate at whic...

181, 1949, 1967, 194 (part 4): Refugees
2007-11-12 05:43:00 Resolution 194 has become a signifier for the Right of Return of Palestinians to their lands. As a complete ignorant in international law, I don't know if it's of any consequence, but I've just found out that the resolutions cited in the title of this post (181 and 194) are both resolutions of the General Assembly of the UN, in contrast to 242 and 338 which are resolutions of the security council.Anyway, 194 deals with the refugees only in article 11, addressing many other issues (such as a call for UN control over Jerusalem) but has still become to be known as the "Right of Return" resolution. It is perhaps not without significance that it is a resolution reached in 1948, before a ceasefire was reached, and (obviously) referring to the situation pre-1967 war.Realizing this, I revert to the focus of my previous post: how can the Palestinians demand a Right of Return for all refugees of 1948, and at the same time not consider the villages and towns that have preserved continuity f...

Thousands of Refugees Returning to Baghdad
2007-11-04 02:34:00 From the AP:Thousands Return to Safer Iraqi Capital BAGHDAD (AP) - In a dramatic turnaround, more than 3,000 Iraqi families driven out of their Baghdad neighborhoods have returned to their homes in the past three months as sectarian violence has dropped, the government said Saturday....things began changing, becoming more peaceful, in August when radical anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr ordered his Mahdi Army fighters to stand down nationwide. About the same time, the Khadra neighborhood Awakening Council rose up against brutal al-Qaida control?the imposition of its austere interpretation of Islam, along with the murder and torture of those who would not comply. The uprising originated in Iraq's west and flowed into the capital. Earlier this year, the Sunni tribes and clans in the vast Anbar province began their own revolt and have successfully rid the largely desert region of al-Qaida control. At one point the terrorist group virtually controlled Anbar...
