From Scientific American: Our intuition, going back forever, is that to move, say, a rock, one has to touch that rock, or touch a stick that touches the rock, or give an order that travels via vibrations through the air to the ear of a man with a stick that can then push the rock--
Relativity and Biology: CR4 Challenge (01/27/09)
2009-01-26 23:01:00
This week's Challenge Question: As you well know, according to the theory of relativity motion reduces the speed at which a clock marks the time. Does this theory affect the biological clock of humans? The Answer will be posted right here on CR4 on February 3rd.

Albert Einstein formulated the theory that says that space and time are relative concepts rather than absolute concepts. For example, consider a car speedometer reading at 65 miles per hour. Can the Sun be weighed using General Relativity?

The bending of light rays by the sun was one of the first evidences that Einstein's theory of general relativity (sometimes called his theory of gravity) was correct. Some people say that this theory abolished force. In Einstein's book Relativity The Special and the General Theory (authorized transl

The Theory of Relativity--I Mean Relativism By Shalene

No, today's article is not about Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Please visit the provided link, if that is what you were looking for. For those of you that know what my writings are really about, or those just visiting and wanting to learn more about what it means to live as Christ follower, I invite you to read on.Today's article is about moral relativism. "What is that??!!", you ask? Moral Relativism is defined by Wikipedia as In philosophy, moral relativism is the position that moral or ethical propositions do not reflect objective and/or universal moral truths, but instead make claims relative to social, cultural, historical or personal circumstances. Moral relativists hold that no universal standard exists by which to assess an ethical proposition's truth; it is the opposite of moral absolutism. Relativistic positions often see moral values as applicable only within certain cultural boundaries or in the context of individual preferences. An extreme relativist position mig...

The Rise of Special Relativity
2007-10-21 23:54:00
In 1905, Einstein?s Theory of Special Relativity was proposed. The reason that it is so “special” is because it was part of the more complex and extensive Theory of General Relativity, which was published in 1915. His theory reshaped the world of physics when it contradicted all previous laws of motion erected by Galileo and ...
Rumble: The Theory of Relativity

Enrico sent me another story from the deep field:As a Master’s student I often wondered about the possible applications of the theory of relativity. Fifteen years later, while sitting at my desk as the recently appointed head of our office in South Sudan, I had my revelation.A young man came to me with a request for salary advance at the end of another day in the ‘deep field’: a day full of nuisances and challenges The form bore two signatures, which gave me a bit of reassurance that the request had gone through an initial screening process. I asked him for his name and what he did for WFP. The answer didn’t come immediately. I repeated my question for a second time and after one or two seconds of hesitation he uttered a few words in Dinka, the local language.Being Italian, I had no difficulty in using my body language to make him understand to come back with an interpreter. So he did and I got his name and function. Which did not seem to match those on the form. So I asked ...
Relativity of Money
2007-09-28 19:53:00
Numbers are perceived to be tangible and fixed. Yet when it comes to money, I've come to learn how relative numbers really are. After my first couple of days in Kabul I finally had to change some money today. Getting a handle on the exchange rate is easy enough at about 50 AFS to 1 USD. What is harder to get a grasp on is how much that can buy you and what is a good deal.I've pretty much resigned myself to knowing that I won't get a good deal on anything until I've been around the block a bit longer. Looking at the prices in the super market I begin to instinctively compare prices to those in Africa.Sure it might cost three bucks for a box of tea, but is it really as dear to me now as it was back in my Peace Corps days? One of my memories from those days was spending a good five minutes deciding if I could afford the $3 box of tea. After all, this was equivalent to a day's wage for me back then. After much deliberation I bought the box of tea, only to have it eaten out fr...

So, you may be asking, what's so darned special about relativity? Well, it's just the foundation of modern physics -- and then, there's that little E=mc2 thing. At the very least, as preparation for some future episodes, you'll need a little background in modern physics. If you're new to the podcast, you'll want to check out episode 4 (Physics: A Brief History) first, just to put this in context with its historical predecessors....

The relativity of time

Our journey has been months in the future for so long that it came as shock to realise that we fly to Germany in just two weeks today. It feels as if there is still so much more preparation to do but I am just not quite sure what it is! A couple of days after we leave, we will start our walk and life will be very different. We will be forever accompanied by our rucksacks, blisters and sore joints. We will have minimal changes of clothes and have no home comforts, such as a comfy chair in front of the television, a familiar bed with clean sheets and on-tap broadband. Food choices will be limited to meals in restaurants, bars, cafes and hotels, or to meals that we can assemble from cold ingredients such as bread, cheese and cold cuts of meat. An exception will be those occasions when someone offers us hospitality – no many so far. This will be our lives for two months. Apart from the food choices, it is a liberating thought. All that we will need will be on our backs. Our liv...

Special Relativity, Pole in a Barn and the Twin Paradox
2007-03-23 10:04:00
This quarter at Drexel University I took a course called Special Theory of Relativity. Though an honors course, its taught by Michael S. Vogeley of the Department of Physics. The topic isn't actually related to my major but it helped me understand some very interesting stuff that I was vaguely knowledgeable about. Of particular interest to me were the Twin Paradox and the Pole in a Barn problem. What I mention here is what I understood from Prof. Vogeley's notes which may be found here, and from the book Spacetime Physics: Introduction to Special Relativity by Edwin F. Taylor and John Archibald Wheeler. The fundamental postulates of Special Relativity are as follows.Principle of Relativity: No experiment can measure the absolute velocity of an observer.Universality of the speed of light: The speed of light (denoted as c = 3×108) is constant in any unaccelerated frame, regardless of its velocity relative to the source of light. The first postulate isn't as important, at least as far...
