Just 1.14% Stake In DEN Creates Media Buzz: What’s Reliance Upto?
2012-02-06 13:21:00 Reliance Strategic Investments, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has picked up 1.14% stake in DEN Networks. DEN is one of the two leading & listed content aggregation and distribution companies in India, Zee Turner Ltd. being the other one. Interestingly, the script hit the Upper-Circuit Buzzer on Bombay Stock Exchange when investors got whiff of the deal. Through the deal RIL should get preferential access to the content of all the media properties of Network18 and its associates and subsidiaries like digital media and the TV18 channels. Reliance Industries appears to be getting heavily into the distribution channel lately & rumors of RIL planning to pick up a minimum 26% stake in leading cable operators are abuzz. We tried to connect the dots. Reliance Entertainment, has bought controlling stakes in one of the largest TV broadcasters Network 18 and in Eenadu or E.TV as it is popularly known. The Base Stations used by Etisalat are provided by Reliance under a US$ 2 billion, 10-year deal signed in 2009. With 1.67 Million subscribers, Etisalat is ranked No. 11 in the Mobile Operators List in India for GSM. Indirect Censorship: Reliance Communication Heading The Crusade As Per Gove
2011-12-26 10:02:00 Hundreds of users connecting to the Internet through Reliance’s internet gateway (Reliance broadband), found themselves unable to access file-sharing websites. Reliance has come forth saying the Government of India made them do it. The ISP Reliance Communication has blocked many popular websites like: Megaupload and Filesonic. People trying to access these are greeted with a “This site has been blocked“, & the insult continues, with a line saying that the message has been “copyrighted” by Reliance Entertainment! The method may be a small step to curb piracy, but, it ironically violates the law itself as the authority to block websites in India rests only with Department of Information and Technology (DIT) and even if a court has ordered blocking of a website, the procedure has to be initiated by DIT officials. Though Government’s pal Reliance is sheltering itself “Under Section 79 of the IT Act”, it’s agenda is to stop the rampant piracy of...

2011-08-30 12:43:00 All you Salman Khan fans waiting eagerly to download the new movie ‘Bodyguard’ via torrents or file sharing websites won’t be able to download it! Downloaders were in for a rude shock last month when they realized that they could not access their favourite file sharing websites like MegaUpload, Mediafire, Hotfile, etc. This was attributed to movie studio Reliance Entertainment who had obtained a court order from the High Court restraining many Internet Service Providers from offering a pirated copy of the movie Singham. As the ISPs were concerned about the court action, they played it safe and blocked entire websites, much to the dismay of the millions of users of such sites. A month later, Reliance is at it again, this time with its movie Bodyguard, which is due to release on 31st August across 2500 screens in theatres across India. Encouraged by their previous actions, Reliance has obtained a ‘John Doe Order’ from the court which dictates websites, c...

Antakshari On Reliance Mobile – Can Community-Driven Games Do The Tri
2009-08-20 06:49:00 Reliance Mobile has announced that it will be launching the popular Indian game, Antakshari for its users on the R-World platform. Available both for the CDMA and GSM users, the game shall be available for the subscribers at a monthly charge of Rs. 30 which comes with 30 minutes of free usage. Last week, WATblog spoke about an RNCOS report that predicted a skyrocketing of Indian mobile VAS revenues. At that point, we had been a little doubtful about mobile VAS revenues actually reaching figures of 16500 crore annually. But, small innovations as what is now launched by Reliance can go a long way in adding that extra revenue from the users’ wallet. Traditional global winning formulas don’t always click in India. What would work are innovations that are customized to the Indian tastes. Music and game downloads have not helped a great deal in improving the ARPU in India. However, concepts like Antakshari would help primarily because it is community based and is viral &ndash...
