Remembering the horrors of war
2009-09-23 17:57:00
Kseniya Simonova’s haunting sand animation evokes painful memories of the tremendous Ukrainian suffering and loss of life during World War II. Ukraine is believed to have lost more people in World War II than any other European nation as a result of the brutal Nazi occupation, followed by the Soviet reoccupation. Its over 40 million population ...

I learned of James Krenov’s passing from TomsWorkbench. Krenov passed on September 9th, 2009. He is our 7th most influential woodworker. His passing makes 2009 especially tough for woodworkers, as Sam Maloof passed on May 21st. Wow! Its been 12 years since the death of Princess Diana on August 31, 1997. Can you believe how fast time flies? It seems like yesterday I was waking up to read the morning news to find her death sprawled all over the front page. As I was always a fan, I was saddened by ...

Riz Au Lait Vanille - Remembering A Grandmother's Embrace
2009-08-06 08:11:00
Type. Backspace. Type. Backspace. Type. Just keep putting one word in front of the other. Like your feet. That's how life is. You walk, you run or it passes you buy. I run. I laugh. I breathe. I stand straight. My grandmother used to tell me that all the time. No kidding. "Just keep walking. Stand straight. Breathe". To make sure I'd get the day's lesson right, she would sweeten the tone by giving me something sweet to nibble on. Most often it was her vanilla rice pudding. "Riz au lait" as we call it in France.Today I am borrowing some of your time to pay tribute to my grandmother, Paulette. No tears. No drama. No long drawn out sadness on my part. I am over all that. I have been over it even before she passed. Quietly. Softly. That's how I am spending my day. Flipping through photo albums. Trying to sort emotions, thoughts and feelings about her. Smiling. Mostly smiling. And I am finding a bit of comfort by preparing some rice pudding like she used to make us when we had a roug...
Remembering Rickey
2009-07-26 20:10:00
The Hall of Fame ceremonies are today in Cooperstown and it's a great class. The one guy I can speak about from experience is Rickey Henderson. I played against Rickey when he was with the A's and I was with the Giants in some exhibition games and in spring training. Rickey could take control of game singlehandedly  and on the diamond, there was nothing he couldn't do. He also  had a lot of fun out there. If you walked him, he'd go ahead and steal two bases and score on grounder. If you pitched to him, he would yank a home run. Congratulations to Rickey and the rest of today's class.Bob...

Remembering Calvin on His 500th Birthday
2009-07-10 17:08:00
Today marks 500 years since the birth of John Calvin. Although Luther nailed his 95 theses on the church door in Wittenburg when Calvin was just 8 years old, it is John Calvin who is arguably the most famous (some might say, infamous) of the Reformers. His work in Geneva has an abiding ...

This Week In Literary History: Remembering Hemingway
2009-07-03 21:02:00
In the middle of the celebratory feel of this week, as we head into Independence Day Weekend, I would be remiss if we did not take a moment to remember this week (yesterday, in fact) as the anniversary of the death of Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway was born this month in 1899 in our very own Oak Park, attended Oak Park and River Forest High Schools until his graduation in 1917. After working as a reporter for the Kansas City Star and serving in the Red Cross Ambulance Corps in WWI, Hemingway returned to Oak Park briefly before moving to Toronto. Then, Hemingway moved back to Chicago, where he continued to do work for The Toronto Star. He married his first...

Remembering Great Moments in NBA History: The 0.4 Shot
2009-07-02 03:30:00
Since the world hates me, there currently is no NBA action for me to sink my teeth into. Because of that, I think we all might as well remember great shots and great moments from this glorious game. The Derek Fisher shot with 0.4 left. As a Lakers fan, I get some goosebumps watching this again. One of the best game winners I have ever seen. Will we see more shots like this? All I can do is hope so. That's what makes you smile and say, I just watched one hell of a game. It's what NBA fans live for.Let me shut up and roll the video:What moments do you want remembered here? Post them in the comments!

I can’t believe it, 2009 is already here, and I have a lot to celebrate from 2008, beside a good year in NASCAR and even better year in country music with listening to my two favorite artists Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, 2008 for me personally was a good year too, I had two moments in 2008 that simple could be described as “Take you breathe away moment”, first one was in late June, when I went to New Hampshire Motor Speedway thanks to Shell-Pennzoil and a media Hot garage/pit road hot pass to watch the race on top of Kevin Harvick’s pit box, what a great day that was from walking through the garage area and on pit road taking pictures to sitting on top of the Shell pitbox watching my second Cup Series race, unbelievable. The second and most breathe taking moment though was watching my sister get married on Dec. 6th, there’s nothing like first seeing her (my sister Janet) walk down those steps at her friend’s house in her white wedding dress that afternoon, that simp...

“A Pair of Shoes” ~ Remembering My Son
2008-12-11 07:10:00
Just remembering & missing today . . . . “A Pair of Shoes” I am wearing a pair of shoes. They are ugly shoes. Uncomfortable shoes. I hate my shoes. Each day I wear them, and each day I wish I had another pair. Some days my shoes hurt so bad that I do not think I can take another step. Yet, I continue to wear them. I get funny looks wearing these shoes. They are looks of sympathy. I can tell in others eyes that they are glad they are my shoes and not theirs. They never talk about my shoes. To learn how awful my shoes are, might make them uncomfortable. To truly understand these shoes, you must walk in them. But, once you put them on, you can never take them off. I now realize that I am not the only one who wears these shoes. There are many pairs in this world. Some woman are like me and ache daily as they try and walk in them. Some have learned how to walk in them so they don’t hurt quite as much. Some have worn the shoes so long that days will go by before th...

Gastric Bypass: Remembering Surgery 6 Years Later

Gastric Bypass: Remembering Surgery 6 Years Later was written by Kaye Bailey from livingafterwls.comSeptember 13, 1999Do you remember where you were six years ago today?I do. It was the day I underwent gastric bypass surgery ? a day that changed my life forever.I don?t recall much about that day. I remember feeling embarrassed lying on the preparation table, my enormous belly exposed to be cleansed antiseptically. I remember feeling frightened, but calm with a total acceptance that gastric bypass surgery was the best decision for me. I remember the anesthesiologist, a beautiful woman, not very old and not very big. Then I went to sleep.I woke up puking violently, an unpleasant reaction to anesthesia. I didn?t have my glasses so things were blurry, particularly the flowers from my husband. And I can remember a push-button device that helped me sleep. Later that night I realized I was not yet smaller. In fact my stomach was bloated and sore. In my drug induced vagueness I became convin...

Wordless Wednesday #60: Remembering Sri Lanka
2008-11-18 18:55:00
In 2002, I was invited to a 5-day conference of environmental journalists in Sri Lanka. That being my first trip there, I decided to take extra days to explore the country. Luckily for me, I have a Sri Lankan friend who took three days off from work to give me a guided tour of the country. I was really excited about our road-trip because I only read about/watched Sri Lanka in books/television. First in our itinerary was Minneriya National Park, 182 kms from the capital of Colombo and about four hours travel by car. This man-made lake (reservoir) is the main feature of the park, covering an area of 3,000 hectares. It was built in the 3rd century by King Mahasena who was known to have discriminated Theravada Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Many temples were destroyed including Mahavihara, the main Theravada temple. During dry season, different kinds of mammals, mostly elephants, and birds roam around the park. Not far from Minneriya is Polonnaruwa, dubbed as the ancient Kingdom of Reservoirs ...

Remembering 9/11/01
2008-09-11 15:28:00
I think it’s important to remember 9/11/01.  For my family, as my sons are too young to remember it themselves, and for myself.  So I never forget. I remember exactly where I was.  Asleep.  Living on the West Coast, not working, and Poe was working nights, and he had gotten home and was asleep too.  My mother-in-law called and woke us up.  I remember thinking, “Someone had better be dead for this phone to be ringing.”  Imagine. I was pregnant with Logan…  Although I can’t remember if we knew I was pregnant yet or not.  He’d be born the following May.  Joseph was almost 18 months old.  God, that seems a long time ago - they’re in Kindergarten and third grade now.  8 and 6.  Time flies. I remember feeling fear, knowing we lived near a large city.  I remember my confusion with the rest of the country when we realized it wasn’t just the towers, but the pentagon and another flight as well.  I remember watching the towers fal...

In my humble opinion, Tony Snow had as much — if not more — impact on the American political landscape as Tim Russert.  Both were kind, big-hearted family men with a unbridled passion for the country they lived in and tried to make a better place from their positions of influence.  One was a life-long liberal (Russert) and received ...
