Remembering Tony Snow
2008-07-14 16:15:00 In my humble opinion, Tony Snow had as much — if not more — impact on the American political landscape as Tim Russert. Both were kind, big-hearted family men with a unbridled passion for the country they lived in and tried to make a better place from their positions of influence. One was a life-long liberal (Russert) and received ...

Remembering the 1980s The Celtics against the Lakers
2008-06-10 00:02:00 Listening to the radio yesterday I learned with interest that the Celtics and the Lakers were contesting another NBA Championship series. When I moved to America in the mid 1980s I had never heard of Larry Bird or Magic Johnston and I doubt that I had ever watched a game of basketball. I had also never heard off or listened to the voice of the NBA, Brent Musburger, whose voice I would get to know well in the first few years of living there. We played it at high school for gym for about six weeks a year. I hated it with the heavy ball and the impossible hoop. This story is how I came to love the game for a short period of time.We stayed for a while in Vermont where all the finals games were on television on CBS. My future father in law was born and bred in Boston and he filled me in on some of the important details. The names from that era are very clear in my mind. I can remember many late nights gripped by the intense theatre from the dusty old Boston Garden and the razzmatazz of Lo...

Remembering D-Day
2008-06-06 18:10:00 American Thinker reminds us that today is the 64th Anniversary of D-Day. I wonder how many young Americans know that, before D-Day, and barring some English-based bombing raids that did not involve ?feet on the ground? fighting, America?s War had taken place entirely in the Pacific. Europe had been mostly stagnant: Hitler had taken over ...

Remembering Passed Pets
2008-06-04 01:56:00 A memorial gift can be a thoughtful testimony to the meaningfulness of the life and love of a beloved pet who has passed on. It can also be the gift of life for other animals in need. It can add just the right touch for expressing compassion to someone who has had a loss and who cares about animal welfare.Buying a plaque for the wishing well of your local animal rescue group (such as Citizens for Animal Protection) or a paving brick (Houston Zoo and SPCA) is a way immortalizing that lost loved one. People see the names emblazoned there every day, and many are warmed at the thought of the love symbolized by the remembrance. The Houston SPCA also maintains kennels sponsored in the memory of passed pets, as well as living animals and other sponsors. You see the engraved plaques above each kennel at every visit. The Houston Humane Society has a memory tree prominently displayed on one wall. It’s foliage is comprised of engraved brass leaves featuring the names of donors to the program a...

40 Years Later--Remembering RFK
2008-06-03 05:07:00 Posting on the FightingBob.com, Steve Argo--a high school teacher in Baraboo--writes a timely article about the living legacy of RFK--"Our RFK":"Forty years ago this week, Robert F. Kennedy was shot and killed while shaking the hands of kitchen workers at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. He was just 42 years old. Had he lived, he very likely would have gone on to capture the Democratic Party nomination for president and quite possibly the White House in November 1968. As it was, his absence during the final months of that campaign was a catastrophic setback for the forces of peace, racial reconciliation and social justice."His life deserves wider appreciation." . . . RFK's name is busily crammed into a chapter full of 1960s angst: Dallas, Pleiku, My Lai, Selma, Woodstock, LSD, Watts, Tet. He appears - and then suddenly disappears - somewhere between James Earl Ray and the 1968 Democratic National Convention. I'm guessing the typical high school student knows about as much abou...
Creep Alert, Remembering Tribbles and Clay's Gonna Be A?
2008-05-30 00:44:00 I've never been much of a Bill Murray fan, even back "in the day"....and I was a huge, huge fan of the first decade of Saturday Night Live. Bill Murray and Chevy Chase made my skin crawl and I never could put my finger on it. There seemed to be an undercurrent of nasty, angry condescension in both of them and it actually prevented me from finding most of what they did either on SNL or in the movies funny. Well reading this just reinforces my impression of Mr. Murray. He's A Real Keeper...notThe wife of entertainer Bill Murray has filed for divorce after nearly 11 years of marriage, alleging he abused her and is addicted to marijuana and alcohol.Jennifer Butler Murray filed divorce papers May 12 in Charleston County. She owns a home on Sullivans Island, S.C., where she lives with the couple's four children. The complaint was first reported by The Post and Courier of Charleston. It also alleges frequent abandonment by the former "Saturday Night Live" star.Bill Murray's attorney, Jo...
Remembering Grammy Shaw
2008-05-29 08:41:00 Over Memorial Day Weekend, Katy, my dad, and I headed out east to Palouse, WA. My parents both grew up there and that's where I lived, too, as a wee little fellow. We joined my cousin and my aunt and uncle Deerkop (who live in this beautiful place just outside of Palouse) to remember Grammy Shaw. She passed away three months ago. Her death caught us all by surprise, and the fact that she's gone is really still sinking in. Grammy and I talked almost every night on the phone ... indeed, we talked the night before she died. I'll always remember that final phone call -- she was happy and in good spirits.I remember thinking over the past few years how it was odd that Grammy didn't really seem to have any hobbies or things she was interested in. But now that she's gone I've realized that she valued what's really important in life: people. To call her a social hub would be an understatement. She had an absolutely amazing ability of bringing people together. She thrived on her family ...

♥ Remembering & Missing Matthew on His 20th Birthday ♥
2008-05-28 06:01:00 N ot a day passes without something reminding us of you - a glimpse of you in one of your siblings, finding one of your treasures on earth, mail still coming with your name on it or the brilliance of the color of red, your favorite colour. We made bittersweet memories on Monday, as we planted red impatients at your gravestone, and your baby brother you’ve never met, tried digging in the soil to “help”. One of your siblings said, “This is the closest Nathan has been to Matthew“. Someday he will know you too.  Though we wonder about the “what ifs” your days were still numbered by God. How blessed we were to have you for 16 years. And yet, how much more blessed we are with the assurance that you accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, we will meet you again, and all our tears will forever be wiped away. Until then, we will miss you, remember you and always share about you. Forever with love, Your Mumsie (affectionate name only ...

A day of remembering
2008-05-26 15:45:00 For some, today means a day off from work or school, a barbeque with friends, or a parade down Main Street, USA, but as a nation, Memorial Day is so much more. To me, it is a day to reflect on our mothers and fathers, grandfathers and grandmothers, and uncles and aunts who served our nation and made it possible for us to become a great nation. It isn't just about those who served in wars oversees, but also those who served at home. There are those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation without selfishness. To be a proud American is to be proud of those who have come before us and understand the work they did to help provide a life for me and my family today. I am grateful and humble to those we honor today. I thank you for everything you did. My God bless and keep you.

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN , not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN, not the politician, Who has given us the right to vote. Low Gas Prices--Are They Worth Remembering?
2008-05-20 08:22:00 WEUA asks a silly question: do you remember when gas was 99 cents? I do. I'm not that old, and I remember when it was 87 cents a gallon. But lets be honest with ourselves--gas prices will NEVER be low again. There are a first reasons for this. First, oil prices are continuing to hit unprecedented highes along with gas prices. Therefore, oil companies are passing along the price increase to consumers. However, the second reason is more important--America has been paying lower gas prices than the rest of the world FOREVER--when I let Thailand gas prices had risen to $5.17 a gallon. This means that even if this recent rise in oil prices is a bubble, don't expect gas prices to fall when oil prices do. U.S. oil companies (despite the billions of dollars in profits they reap) have been waiting a long time to bring U.S. gas prices inline with the rest of the world. Do you think they will just back away from that once they have achieved this goal? So, besides reminiscing and complaining, wh...

Remembering SSG Chad Caldwell
2008-05-16 04:00:00 It’s easy to forget that our troops are still overseas in Iraq. We get caught up in daily trivia and routine problems. The high cost of gas or job stress can keep us from remembering the greater world. We should always take time to say a prayer for our troops overseas, as well as one for our political leaders as well as our enemies, as Jesus would want us to do. A video by photojournalists who were embedded with Staff Sgt. Chad Caldwell’s unit shows them recalling their time with him in Mosul, Iraq. Other included videos show segments featuring SSG Caldwell serving his nation along with others in his unit. SSG Chad Caldwell was killed April 30 in Mosul, Iraq — just a few weeks before he was scheduled to come home. My prayers are with his family. Video: Photojournalists remember Staff Sgt. Remembering His Favorite Park
2008-05-04 02:09:00 My son has an incredible memory. Even when I was his age, I do not think my memory was as good. If you follow my blog you know that 2 years ago we left the Pacific Northwest and moved to California. We were there for a year before we found ourselves moving back. My son was 4 when we left and just a month from his 6 Birthday when we moved back.Today the kids asked if we could go to the park. However my son didn?t want to ride his bike to our neighborhood one. He asked me if I remembered the park with the bridge. He wanted to go to that one. I thought he was talking about the park we went to last summer in California. I started to explain that it was too far away. He looked at me like I was crazy. He wasn?t talking about THAT one. My little man then went on to describe a park that we used to go to a lot before we moved. We met up with our MOMS Club there often and it was just a short drive away. On our way there today I was listening to the kids talk in the back seat. My...

His works will remain as scholarly meditation, synthesis of philosophy, soulful poetry and radiant source of spiritual wisdom for ages. The prestigious Review of Metaphysics commended him for "breaking new ground in our thinking about consciousness? (with) a richer and deeper notion of Personhood." John is beloved for his book Anam Cara - Gaelic for "soul friend" - and for his insistence on beauty as a human calling and a defining aspect of God. Remembering PN Oak: The original Hindutva historian
2008-04-04 23:40:00 Does the name of Professor Oak rings a bell? The historian who used to make claims about Taj Mahal originally being a Hindu temple and similar other assertions about Qutub Minar and many other mosques. That was the era when RSS didn't have historians, scientists, writers, journalists, doctors, academicians and other professionals in its fold. But Oak, was quite dedicated to his cause. He was mocked at, but he continued to publish his works, make such claims and write letters in newspapers.Oak died sometime back. Not many tears were shed. Perhaps, because he had become irrelevant. Or may be, the Saffron brigade now had an army of able professionals to espouse its cause in every field, much more eloquently in TV cameras.Still, one expected a few obituaries. Hardly any attention was paid to the demise of the original Hindutva Historian. The man who had founded the Institute for Writing Indian History, spent all his life, for the cause, especially in the era when Marxist historians domi... |
