assembly of remembrance | zikr
2008-06-10 09:54:00 No assembly ever meets to remember Allah which is not attended by the Angels and not covered by Allah's Mercy and where Allah the Almighty does not remember those among them who are close to Him.- saying of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon himAbove is a hadith or islamic tradition, along with inspiring Quranic verses on remembrance of God, are the basis of the assembly of remembrance or zikr (also written as dhikr) practice as preserved by the sufis, gnostics and also by muslims who don't necessarily call themselves sufi.Has not the time arrived for the believers that their hearts in all humility should engage in the remembrance of God and of the Truth which has been revealed .. - The Quran 57:16And remember God in abundance that you may be successful.- The Quran 62:10... and certainly the repeated remembrance (Zikr) of God is the greatest. - The Quran 29:45The sacred tradition of assembly of remembrance was also practiced by Jesus Christ, son of Mary, with his holy ...

A Day of Remembrance and Thanks - United States Memorial Day
2008-05-26 21:13:00 Today is a quiet day here in the U.S. - banks are closed, schools are empty and meaningful moments of silence fill the air. The loss of remembrance
2008-05-16 15:27:00 It occurs to me that what a painter is really doing is stripping the self-assumed veneer of meaning from life. I went out at lunch yesterday and did this painting looking across a parking lot… the cars and reflections were compelling. Unfortunately none of that made it into the painting. Yesterday late, these two studies ...
Holocaust Remembrance Day
2008-05-02 18:43:00 When I lived in South Beach, Florida I stood before this sculpture crying my eyes out. In case you can't understand what the photo represents, it depicts the millions of people who had suffered and/or lost their lives during hitler's despicable nazi regime. It is difficult for me to sit here and type these words to you, as not only can't I understand how this took place while so many participated, but I myself have lost some family in this "final solution."Others of my family have escaped during this atrocious time and have been living in Israel, where they've been happy for the most part except for the fear of suicide bombings, of course. Hopefully very shortly there will be peace in the Middle East.Astonishing as it seems, there are some who still deny that the Holocaust ever happened in this world. Perhaps these links will convince them of something that should NEVER BE FORGOTTEN nor ever BE REPEATED AGAIN. Note: Some of the stories and images presented within the following li...

Remembrance: What Can I Do To Make This Happen?
2008-04-04 22:36:00 On the 40th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s death, a friend sent this video to me from the Barack Obama for President website. I know that we have a moral obligation to do better and be better as a people and a nation. Hope is not something that one person possesses. It is shared. In fact, hope is no good unless it is shared. Hope without vision is just a dream. So, how can a dream become reality.I would much rather be a nation where the people are filled with hope rather than cynicism. I would much rather be nation that puts more emphasis on the next generation rather than on our current one. Finally, I would much rather be a a nation of believers rather than "can't sayers" or "haters," which begs the question...What can I do to make this happen?
L'ACQUA, LA MEMORIA E I SILENZI DEL MARE / THE WATER, THE REMEMBRANCE AND T
Become Becoming | Poem of Spring, Poem of New Life Born out of Remembrance
2008-03-22 02:41:00 As spring arrives, it reminds of the renewal cycle of rebirth which manifest again and again. the whole creation, every molecule is in a continuous state of renewing itself again and again. the Divine comes into manifestation with every moment. no two moments are the same yet they belong to Oneness, each is part of Whole. what a miracle to witness this arrival and being part of this becoming! May this spring bring new life energy, new inspiration to your life and your loved ones.on night of the Spring Equinox, the following poem was shared by author and visionary artist Colette. thanks Colette for sharing!Become Becoming | Li-Young LeeWait for evening. Then you?ll be alone.Wait for the playground to empty. Then call out those companions from childhood:The one who closed his eyesand pretended to be invisible. The one to whom you told every secret. The one who made a world of any hiding place. And don?t forget the one who listened in silencewhile you wondered out lout:Is the universe an em...
Remembrance of Psycho le Cemu (A Tribute)
2008-02-05 18:57:00 Okay, anyone who knows me knows that Psycho le Cemu is my favorite Japanese band of all time!! They weren’t the first I ever heard, but once I heard them, I was hooked!! I never heard or saw a band like this. They could do hardcore rocking songs complete with death vocals and screams, then go straight to JPop complete with Para Para dance moves!! And the costumes!!! Need I talk about the costumes? They basically made the band for me! They didn’t just call themselves a Visual band they WERE a Visual band! And most important of all, they were good musicians doing good music. Not to mention you’d be hard pressed to find another band that was just as….FUN as this one was. I first heard the songs “Gekiai Merry-Go-Round” and “Omoide Aruki” (I bought the two singles based on the pictures alone!) and I never looked back. I love just about every song they’ve done. Sadly though, in 2005 lead singer Daishi was arrested for alleged drug use...

Remembrance of Foods Past
2008-01-05 03:18:00 As our man Marcel so eloquently illustrated, it’s pretty much natural for most of us to be flooded with sensory memories when we inhale the aroma of some beloved or long-forgotten food–images come flooding back as quickly as a montage in a rap video. The scent of hot chocolate? Of course: that was studying for high school metriculations, 1978. The wafting aroma of eggplant parmesan? That dinner party with my wacky room mate (ah, yes, the one my friend Ed said had a revolving door in her bedroom) in 1981. The tingly, acidic rush of champagne bubbles on the nose? The first New Year’s Eve with my HH, way back when. Oh, and the next one. And also our anniversary. Oh yeah, also my birthday. And the following New Year’s. And this past one. . . . Yes, food certainly elicits memories for most of us. What’s weird about me, I’ve since discovered (among all the other things) is that the opposite is also true: memories elicit food. ...
Rosemary for Remembrance
2008-01-02 08:38:00 Rosemary has been associated with improving the memory for thousands of years. What is the truth behind this longstanding belief? Throughout history, mourners would often carry sprigs of rosemary at a funeral and toss it into the coffin before it was buried to ensure that the deceased would not be forgotten. The goddess of knowledge in Greek mythology, Minerva, is associated with rosemary. The nine Muses in Greek mythology, who play an important role in inspiration and memory, are often depicted with rosemary in their hands. The Muses' mother was Mnemosyne, the personification of memory. Sir Thomas More said about rosemary: "It is the herb sacred to remembrance and, therefore, to friendship; whence a sprig of it hath a dumb language that maketh it the chosen emblem of our funeral wakes and in our buriall grounds." In the Grete Herbal, published in 1529, the following description of rosemary is found: 'ROSEMARY. - For weyknesse of ye brayne. Against weyknesse of the brayne a...

Choose Rosemary for Remembrance
2007-12-31 15:23:00 I like rosemary. It smells clean and refreshing to me. When I lived in California I saw it used frequently as a hedge, or as an indestructible shrub around business parks. I often used it as a base for wreaths because it dried beautifully and was easy to find.Since moving to Kentucky, I keep my rosemary bushes indoors during the winter months and move them onto the deck in May (on Derby day). Because of the low winter temperatures, it's not abundant here, so I've switched to sage and other herbs for wreaths, but rosemary is still a good friend.I'm a lover of lamb and eggplant, so my fresh rosemary comes in handy. I also like to dry the stems as an aromatic for summer grilling and smoking.I mention it today because of its association as the herb of remembrance. The famous line from Shakespeare's Hamlet: "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance;", and it's inclusion as a memory enhancer in medical journals dating from the 1600s gives it a poignant significance to me on this th...

Christmas Remembrance
2007-12-26 00:00:00 A Different Christmas Poem The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream. The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight. A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty...

The importance of Zikr (Remembrance)
2007-12-02 13:01:00 Yahya related to me from Malik that Ziyad ibn Abi Ziyad said that Abu?d-Darda had said, ?Shall I not tell you the best of your deeds, and those that give you the highest rank, and those that are the purest with your King, and are better for you than giving gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy and striking their necks?? They said, ?Of course.? He said, ?Remembrance (dhikr) of Allah ta ala.? (Imam Malik: Muwatta Book 15 No 15.7.24) Malik related to me from Nuaym ibn Abdullah ibn al-Mujmir from AIi ibn Yahya az-Zuraqi from his father that Rifaa ibn Rafi said, ?One day we were praying behind the Messenger of Allah, (SAW), when the Messenger of Allah, (SAW), raised his head from ruku and said, ?Allah hears the one who praises Him? (Sami Allahu liman hamidah). A man behind him said, ?Our Lord, praise belongs to you - blessed, pure and abundant praise? (Rabbana wa laka?l hamd kathiran tayiban mubarakan fihi). Remembrance Day, 2007
2007-11-11 23:00:00 So Remembrance Day, 2007, it always seems to roll around so quickly - and how quickly we all seem to forget the debt we owe those who have fought and died for us to live comfortable and peaceful lives at home in the UK. I don't want to get into the legality of the current conflicts in Iraq, nor the issue of us being in Afghanistan, what matters on Remembrance Day is that we all remember what we owe to those who have sacrificed there lives for us - whether we asked them to or not - and for the sacrifice which is still going on today by the members of our armed forces across the world. This used to be a difficult time for me, coming from a mixed English and Irish upbringing - (especially when I was younger and trying to understand which 'side' I was on) - as I've got older this has got a lot easier. On Remembrance Day, more than any other time, I'm not English and I'm not Irish - I'm both. It's often not remembered that in 1916, the same year as the Easter Rising, wh...

Day of Remembrance - 11 November 2007
2007-11-11 11:59:00 Today is Remembrance Day - L'Armistice - Wapenstilstand. I heard that the oldest British survivor of WWI is 90 years old. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele (old Flemish name, Passendale in English), a First-World-War offensive that became a symbol of the violence of war in its most gruesome and senseless form. In remembrance of the 500,000 soldiers who lost their lives, the municipalities of Zonnebeke, Heuvelland, Messines and Ypres have marked the anniversary with a series of events coinciding with the phases of the original offensive. The events, have taken place over five weekends between June and November. The last, this weekend, remembers the Canadians.Fought in 1917, the Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres (Ieper), was one of the major battles of the First World War. British, ANZAC and Canadian soldiers fought against the German Army for control of the Belgian village in a battle that lasted three months and claime...

Remembrance Sunday
2007-11-11 03:02:00 For The FallenWith proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres, There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidde...

NHL players among those we honor Remembrance Day
2007-11-10 08:17:00 Even for the most ardent of hockey fans, there are moments where the game is an afterthought. This Sunday is one of those times. On November 11, we once again honor and offer our sincere thanks to those who have stood on the front lines to battle for our freedom, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. You'll see them this Remembrance Day, many of their faces weathered and beaten from the passage of time. No matter what conflict they survived, they will all be standing straight, fighting back tears on a day that is theirs alone.Hockey players have not been exempt from the trials of war. Like your grandfather or your uncle, your brother or your son, NHL superstars have stood the post. Some never made it home. George Richardson and Allan Davidson were killed fighting for Canada in the First World War. Three decades later, Red Garrett and Joe Turner lost their lives in World War II. All were in the midst of their careers. The legendary Hobey Baker, a standout amateur hockey pl...
