Pro Referendum Rally London - The report.
2007-10-29 12:26:00
I'm back from the Rally. If it wasn't for getting a chance to look around Westminster Abbey and meeting some great people in St Stephens Tavern it would have been a wasted journey. The first thing I noticed when I arrived at the demonstration point was an open topped bus that seemed to have got lost on its way to a Monster Raving Loony Party Rally. If that wasn't bad enough, within ten minutes of being there I got leafleted by the bloody BNP. That leaflet found its way into the first available bin. A generous estimate of the size of the crowd would be over a thousand, but I was expecting several thousand given the support that seemed to have been shown on the web. That said the speeches would have been worth listening to, if only the crowd had been larger and not so full of people who were obviously nuttier than squirrel sh*t. What was most disappointing was the lack of media coverage. After all the fuss The Sun have made about the referendum, I would have expected them to have ru...
On my way to the Pro Referendum Rally.
2007-10-27 08:16:00
I've just boarded the train from Portsmouth to Waterloo. I should arrive about 9am, when I intend to walk over to Westminster Abbey. Once I've had a look around the Abbey and its museum, I'll be heading over to St Stephen's pub were I'll hopefully get to meet the Devil for a little drink (or maybe a large one) before heading over to the Rally. More later. Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

Should David Cameron agree to a referendum on a ratified EU Treaty?
2007-10-26 20:19:00
David Cameron has a very difficult decision to make on whether to agree to a referendum on a ratified EU Treaty. I can understand his dilemma. I want a referendum on the treaty before it is ratified. We were promised one and Gordon Brown has gone back on that promise because he knows we will vote no if given our democratic choice. The problem with agreeing to call a referendum if he comes into power after the any ratification of the Treaty, is the massive discord it would cause with the rest of the EU. There would be I think, calls from other member states for us to agree to keep the Treaty or leave the EU, full stop.I think David has to give this problem a lot of thought, given that it could come down to a in or out decision. My gut feeling would be to call the referendum and face the consequences, but I am not going to be in David's position. We have the luxury of making our choices without having to pick up the pieces if it all goes wrong. There is no doubt it is a lot ea...
I will be attending the pro-referendum rally in London on tomorrow.
2007-10-26 20:11:00
I'm looking forward to tomorrow and I intend to make a day of it. I'll be arriving early (about 9am) to have a look around Westminster Cathedral and its museum. That should take me up until the pro-referendum rally which starts at 12 o'clock. This will be the first rally that I've attended, so it will be all new to me.The rally is due to end at about 3 p.m and I will then be heading over to the War Cabinet museum. I know that this will seem boring to some, but if anyone wants to join me, you are most welcome (email me). Somewhere in amongst all that I'll be hopefully getting in some pub grub and a few drinks. Please try to come along and give your support. You can find more details about the rally by clicking on the picture.

Conservatives are to start the Battle for a EU Treaty Referendum today.
2007-10-22 08:41:00
Later today, Gordon brown will let MPs know what happened during the EU summit. This will mark the start of the Conservative campaign to get the people the referendum that Tony Blair promised. It's a job that would be a lot easier if the LibDems had not also gone back on their manifesto promise. The outcome of the parliamentary vote will come down to one thing and one thing only: how many of the 120 reported pro referendum Labour MPs can be forced by their Whips to go against their moral judgement. Is that democracy?
David Cameron on the EU Treaty and why we should have a Referendum.
2007-10-19 13:11:00
David Cameron said:"I believe in Parliamentary democracy, I think our MPs should be the ones that scrutinise legislation. But when it comes to the question of how we are governed as a country, who runs the country, I don't think members of Parliament have the right to transfer that power away without asking the British people first. And that's why there should be a referendum when we are talking about these things." Who do you trust, David Cameron or Gordon Brown?
Berlin?s Tempelhof Referendum Rescue?

David Miliband spins the EU Treaty Referendum.
2007-10-16 14:04:00
I can't believe that David Miliband has got the cheek to say on Radio 4's Today programme that: "everyone accepted" that the EU Treaty and the old Constitution were completely different. It's very true David they are different, but beyond someone rubbing out Constitution and replacing it with Treaty the change is insignificant.David Heathcoat Amory of the European Scrutiny Committee said that with respect to criminal justice: "What we found when we looked at the treaty was that the European Court of Justice will ultimately get jurisdiction over this policy and despite the Red Lines the decisions won't be made by a body in this country, but by judges in Luxembourg."David Miliband and the rest of the cabinet believe that they can say anything to the public and it will be swallowed. They really do have exceedingly low opinion of the people they are working for.I hope they find out soon that they are the stupid ones for thinking that we are.Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

European Scrutiny Committee - Say we must have a referendum on the EU Treat
2007-10-09 09:30:00
Below are three paragraphs of proposed amendments to the Thirty Fifth Report, put forward by Mr William Cash MP of the European Scrutiny Committee:1. The Reform Treaty, as compared to the Original Constitutional Treaty, requires a referendum of the electorate of the United Kingdom because it is the equivalent to the Constitutional Treaty, even if not the same. It is a distinction without a proper difference.2. A referendum is required for the following constitutional reasons: the Reform Treaty with the merger of the TEC, based on the Treaty of Rome (which was the genesis of the European Economic Community), followed by the Single European Act on the one hand and the TEU (with its genesis in the Maastricht Treaty which deals with European government, followed by Nice and Amsterdam), on the other, into a Union with an overarching single legal personality and a self-amending text is "substantial constitutional change", even "fundamental change" in terms that warrant a referendum accord...
WELFARE, EPIFANI:BUONI SEGNO AFFLUENZA REFERENDUM,BELLA GIORNATA
2007-10-08 16:55:00
Roma, 8 ott.

Lady Thatcher gives Gordon Brown an Hand-bagging over the EU Referendum.
2007-09-29 18:04:00
Good old LADY Thatcher has Hand-bagged Gordon Brown by backing The Sun?s campaign for an EU Treaty referendum. She warned Brown not to trust EU leaders and that any guarantees form them are not worth the paper they are written on.Lady Thatcher told the Sun:?Yet again Sun readers are standing up for Britain and calling our Government to account. May I say to the Prime Minister, don?t believe the assurances from Brussels ? they gave similar ones to me. It?s not too late to listen and it?s not too late to act. This Treaty matters, Prime Minister, so be bold and let the British people have the final say.?Lady Thatcher is urging Brown not to fall for claims the Treaty is different to the rejected Constitution saying: the Treaty is the Constitution ?in all but name? and the nation deserves its say. Don't forget those of you that value Democracy: David Cameron has already given a signed pledge of a national vote if he wins the General election. You can read the full story in The Sun by c...
Dutch Labour Party will not allow a Referendum on the EU Treaty.
2007-09-26 14:08:00
The Dutch Labour party (PvdA) will not allow its voters a Referendum on the EU Treaty. Their stance exactly mimics that of Gordon Brown and our Labour Party. An opinion poll by Maurice de Hond, indicated that 77% of those questioned believed the cabinet was against a referendum because ministers were afraid the Dutch would again vote 'no'.In a move that looked like he and Gordon Brown shared the same spin doctor, Labour parliamentary leader Jacques Tichelaar said: 'This treaty is fundamentally different to the constitution rejected in 2005.' However the Dutch Labour Party had said it would support a referendum during last year's election campaign - does that sound familiar? Opposition MPs described the decision as 'political suicide'. I hope they are right, the Dutch Labour Party should pay for going back on such a massive election promise - and so should ours.
David Cameron - Promises the people an EU Treaty Referendum
2007-09-26 11:38:00
David Cameron has done today what Gordon Brown and the Labour party have failed to do this week at their conference. He has promised to keep democracy alive in the UK.In a signed letter to The Sun, David made the following commitment:"Today, I will give this cast-iron guarantee: If I become PM a Conservative government will hold a referendum on any EU treaty that emerges from these negotiations."This is a short extract of the letter:On Monday The Sun?s image of Gordon Brown sticking two fingers up to the British public was provocative. But it was right. What a difference to Churchill. When he made that salute, it inspired this country to wipe the scourge of fascism from Europe. But for Gordon Brown, it?s a gesture to the British people saying: ?I know best. Your views are irrelevant. Get used to it.?To read the rest of David Cameron's letter to the people click HERE.

The Sun - EU Referendum Petition.
2007-09-24 11:39:00
The Sun have done the people of this country a great service today by starting their campaign for a referendum on the EU Treaty. You can read their article: Greatest threat since WW2 by clicking HERE. You will notice that they also have an excellent graphic depicting Gordon Brown giving the British people the two fingered salute. You can also sign The Sun's EU Petition by clicking HERE.The Sun's timing is perfect, given that Uncle Joe Brown will stand up in front of the Labour party faithful this morning and tell them bare faced lies. He will repeat the lies he told us in his last speech:"Many will recall that when taking office I emphasised that the government must listen and learn. Now I say we must do more. We must engage and involve with people on the issues they face in their everyday lives. I believe that Britain needs a new type of politics which embraces everyone in this nation, not just a select few. A politics built on consensus, not division. A politics built on engagin...
Daily Referendum - My first political memory
2007-09-23 10:50:00
I've been tagged by Grendel for the "My first political memory" meme.Well, I was as aware of politics as anyone is as a child - not very. The first memory that sticks is one that showed me how twisted politics can get. It was during the Miners strike in Barnsley that I happened to be getting a lift to my girlfriends house in her Dads car. He was a traffic cop, so when we passed a large house with three police cars out front and officers patrolling the perimeter I asked him what was going on. In a very low voice that sounded like he was trying to contain his anger he told me that the house belonged to Arthur Scargill and the police were there for his protection. Now, if you were around then, you will know that Arthur was continually slagging off the police. You can probably understand why I thought at the time: what a cheeky bastard! And thus I was initiated into the world of politics.I Tag: Cllr Tony Sharp , Andrew Allison, Monkey with a blue rosette ,Big Chip Dale & Lord Higha...
EU Treaty Referendum - A comment from Holland.
2007-09-22 18:14:00
From Mark Mardell's Euro blog, a comment that needs to be read.Mandy Warmerdam wrote: Now that the decision has been made, I feel I must speak up for the sake of democracy.I am a citizen of the Netherlands, and a proud 'Nee'-voter. I did not believe in the EU Constitution, and as soon as word of this new treaty reared its ugly head I knew it would be little different of its predecessor.Even with the final text still largely shrouded in mystery, it has become clear that this treaty is indeed largely the same as its rejected parent. To freshen the memory, for those who have forgotten: At a turnout of 62,8%, a rough 62% of the voters said 'No'.This was a nation's vote of no-confidence, and there was absolutely no doubt that our nation did not want this constitution or anything to do with it, and so even Prime Minister Balkenende was forced to admit this on national television, in a state that seemed almost near tears. His words were: "The Dutch people have spoken tonight. It is a c...
Will the Dutch Cabinet Say Yes To EU Referendum?
2007-09-21 11:56:00
Later today the Dutch Cabinet will meet and hold a vote to decide whether to give the Dutch people a referendum on the EU Treaty. The chances are that they will vote no. Like all EU governments the Christian Democrats are in favour of the treaty. However they are in a coalition with Labour who are pro-referendum.The mood amongst the Dutch people is still one of Euro-scepticism and the government are worried that the people will once again vote against the Treaty, leaving Holland on the sidelines. I can't see the cabinet voting for the referendum if the people will go against their wishes.Once again democracy will be struck another blow. Are there any true democracies left in Europe?
Dorset Village takes on Gordon Brown for a Referendum on the EU Treaty.
2007-09-20 08:13:00
The village of East Stoke in Dorset is leading the way in the public's fight to get the referendum on the EU Treaty that Gordon Brown's party promised in their election manifesto. "The mouse that roared" village is holding a vote Today on whether there should be a referendum on the EU treaty by exploiting a little-known loophole in the law.Organiser Darren Patterson, said: "We hope that from small acorns, huge oaks will grow. I have been inundated with people from surrounding villages wanting to know how we have done it. The village may be tiny but the support is massive." It looks like the people are starting to let Gordon and his cronies know that they will not be walked over. Local resident Peter Roe, 81, said: "This country has pretty much stood on its own for thousands of years. Why should we jeopardise that? I am dead against this Europe thing. Tyranny has affected Europe all through the centuries. Who has stopped them? We have, this island in the silver sea. East Stoke is a...
Overseas Chinese in Indonesia denounce Taiwan referendum plan
2007-09-19 00:26:00
The Council for the Promotion of China's Peaceful Reunificationin Indonesia held a symposium in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia and capital of East Java province, voicing opposition to the Taiwan authorities' pursuit of entry to the United Nations. The move is a grave provocation by the Taiwan authorities and disregards the interests of Taiwan's 23 million residents, Wu Junliang, chairman of the council, told the gathering. He added that it is a threat not only to the situation across the Taiwan Strait, but to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. All of the Chinese in Indonesia are firmly behind the "one-China" policy constantly followed by the Indonesian government, and they resolutely oppose provocative activities by secessionists in Taiwan to split China and undermine regional peace, Wu said.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Mixed Member Referendum
2007-09-17 15:15:00
On October 10, Ontario will need to decide whether we maintain our electoral system or take on a new one A Mixed Member Referendum. What on earth is MMP...well I found a nice YouTube video that explains it. Actually there's a quite a few that explain it. But I like this one.Elections Ontario Referendum (MMP)The thing about the MMP is that it will be easy for a government to form coalition majorities and that is not what the people wanted. I could see a great stagnation in Ontario within the halls of Queenspark. Agenda items will never be put forward for voting because the single majority government can loose by having the other coalition vote against it.Not only that but I don't know about having someone appointed into parliament because they were on a list and their party decided to put them up high on the list. I know the video says for majorities, women and all that. That is a great idea. But that's not how it will work. It's all about money, and whoever has the most will end ...
Have Brown and Campbell formed a pact to muddy the EU Referendum waters?
2007-09-14 15:21:00
Is Ming Campbell helping out his old mate Gordon Brown with that tricky old EU Treaty? My blood is boiling. I don't think that I have seen a more cynical piece of political maneuvering like Ming's in a long time. Brown doesn't want to give us the referendum his party promised in its manifesto. David Cameron on the other hand believes it would be a betrayal of British citizens not to hold one.Now in steps Ming the meaningless. What hope do the Libdems have of getting into power? I'll tell you: one very slim chance by the means of forming a coalition government with Labour after the next general election. We now have two Labour parties: Gordon's Big Labour Party and Ming's Little Labour Party. So now we are seeing Ming being a good Little Labour boy by trying to muddy EU Treaty Referendum waters. This is what Ming is proposing and it plays out beautifully for his mate Gordon: ?If there is to be a referendum it shouldn't be restricted to a comparatively minor treaty. It ...
The TUC vote in favour of an EU Treaty Referendum.
2007-09-12 17:30:00
UPDATE: The Unions have voted in favour of a call for a referendum on the EU treaty.Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. It is not looking good for Gordon is it?. You've got to admire Tony Blair's political savvy, he knew the exact moment when the kitchen was getting a little too hot. One person who does not posses Blair's foresight is the Minger (Ming Campbell) who has said he will not back calls for a referendum. How much notice the LibDems will take of the meaningless one I don't know, but if I was a guessing man, I would say - not much.Tony Blair was lucky enough to be Prime Minister when the people of this country seemed to be in a slumber. Gordon Brown is going to get our full attention. We want a bloody referendum on the EU Treaty!
Referendum pressure mounts for Gordon Brown (EU Treaty)
2007-09-12 07:45:00
Will today see the Unions at the TUC conference give Gordon Brown another indication of their discontent?Yesterday they voted to take "co-ordinated industrial action" against the government over its below-inflation pay rise. Mark Serwotka, leader of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCU), said: "When Gordon Brown slams the door in our face, we have to say we aren't accepting it. Unity is strength."Steve Cox, of the Prison Officers' Association, said: "None of us want a repeat of the winter of 1978. However, if the government continues like this, we have to be ready for action. If we are left with no alternative, we will all be out on the street."TUC general secretary Brendan Barber, warned that the government would pay a "heavy price" if it did not reconsider the proposed pay deal.Today the unions are expected to back at least one of the two proposed motions asking for a referendum on the EU Treaty. The RMT are demanding that the TUC should actively campaign for a "no" vo...
Linkin Park - I won't be ignored! (I Want A Referendum).

Here's one for Gordon Brown.
I want a Bloody Referendum on the EU Treaty!
2007-09-07 14:17:00
The first time I posted this was back in may this year. With the cross party I WANT A REFERENDUM campaign having been set up, I thought it would be a good time to re-post.Seven days ago I published the post: We won't be allowed a Referendum on EU changes. Today in the Telegraph, Conservative South East England MEP, Dan Hannan confirms my fears by disclosing the contents of the leaked letter penned by German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. Merkel wants to push through a Treaty which will in essence be a Constitution. To achieve this Merkel tells her fellow EU heads of government that they will have to: "use different terminology without changing the legal substance". There can be no doubt that the proposed Treaty is the same Constitution we were not given a Referendum on. Merkel makes this crystal clear when she wishes to preserve intact the content of the constitution, making only "the necessary presentational changes."Tony Blair said: ?There was no tradition of holding votes on treatie...

Is Gordon Brown paving the way for a U-turn on the EU Treaty Referendum?
2007-09-03 17:22:00
Gordon Brown has spent weeks telling us that a referendum on the EU Treaty is not required because he had received guarantees on his "Red Lines". However when he was asked if there was still an "if" over holding a referendum he said: "Yes, of course." He went on to say: "If we succeed in achieving our red lines in all the detailed negotiations, there will, in my view and in the government's view, be no need for a referendum."Hold on a minute, I was sure he told us that the red lines were set in stone, and that he had signed up to a "UK version" of the treaty. Is Brown using the Red Lines as his get out clause now that there is a growing demand for a referendum, even from within his own party? Telling the people that the Red Lines are not being honoured would be the only way he could hold a referendum and save a little face.Red lines or not, we still are entitled to the referendum the government promised us. As the pressure mounts, just watch Brown start to question his "set in ston...

Labour MP Keith Vaz calls for a referendum on the EU Treaty.
2007-08-31 12:41:00
Labour MP for Leicester East and former Europe Minister, Keith Vaz is calling for a referendum on the new EU treaty. In a letter to the Sun, Mr Vaz writes: "I believe the time has come for the government to hold a referendum and decide once and for all Britain's place is at the heart of Europe." Agreed "The British people should have a chance to vote in a referendum on the treaty which will enable us to continue our engagement with Europe." Agreed "And I am absolutely convinced that we will win any test of public opinion as to whether or not the British people want us in Europe, at the heart of Europe, which is what's happened over the last 10 years, or whether they want us to turn our back on Europe." Dream on Keith! Not a chance. And that is why Gordon Brown will do everything he can to avoid a referendum. Keith confirmed his weak grip on reality by adding: "He's (Gordon Brown) been a terrific prime minister since he took over, he will make that judgement, but I think that we s...
Referendum legge elettorale, Berlusconi difende la sua legge, Politica & Go
2007-08-31 11:50:00
Telegraph EU referendum petition signed by 70,000
2007-08-29 18:08:00
From the Telegraph:More than 70,000 people have now signed the Telegraph petition calling for a referendum on the EU reform treaty, as cross-party support for a public vote continues to grow. The news came after it emerged that some Liberal Democrats could join the more than 120 Labour MPs planning to rebel against Gordon Brown in demanding a referendum.Number 10 reaffirmed yesterday that Mr Brown believed there was no need for a referendum as EU leaders had now scrapped plans for a fully-fledged constitution. But a growing body of sceptics argue that the new proposals and the old, defeated constitutional treaty are essentially the same thing. The Daily Telegraph has learnt that even the traditionally pro-Brussels Lib Dems are now split over whether British voters should be denied the final say on the controversial treaty.I say: If a Beefburger only contains 90% Beef, it is still a bloody Beefburger."The fundamentals of the Constitution have been maintained," says Angela Merkel."The gr...
