By Bruce Berlet After being among the AHL?s elite for most of the season, the Connecticut Whale looks to smooth their first speed bump as the midpoint of the season arrives Friday night in Norfolk, Va. The Whale?s four-game winless streak (0-2-1-1) is their longest of the franchise?s 15th season, but they still have a five-point lead over Albany in the Northeast Division despite the loss of their two leading scorers, center John Mitchell and rookie left wing Carl Hagelin, to the parent New York Rangers and injuries to veteran defenseman Wade Redden and skilled wing Mats Zuccarello, named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team last week after playing in only 18 games. ?For the most part, we played some pretty good hockey until last week,? said veteran center Kris Newbury, now the Whale?s leading scorer (15 goals, 21 assists) despite missing five games while on recall to the Rangers and four games because of a suspension. ?Our special teams have been good (power play is tied for thir...

Females Spend More Time On Social Networking Sites Reveals Report
2012-01-05 07:43:00
Paying close attention to gender behavior comScore has reveal-ed in a report that females ranging from the age of 15 and above spend more amount of time on social networking sites. Though the relative importance of social networking varied across regions, women were found to be consistently more social on the Web than their regional male counterparts. The variation could be attributed to overall cultural differences, but the fact remained consistent. Social Networking’s reach among women was highest in Latin America, where it reached 94% of females online. The case wasn’t that dissimilar in North America & Europe saw their female populations visit a social networking site & stay active for approx. 2 hours. Meanwhile in Asia Pacific, where many regions still face low broadband penetration and site restrictions, the number of women active was a surprising 55%. On reading this, many of our users must have checked their friend list, like I did.  Honestly speaking, ...

The CW Gets its Mid-Season Report Card
2011-12-12 18:56:00
The Good: Making good on his mandate to broaden the Network’s audience, newly-minted CW President Mark Pedowitz kicked off his first full season at the helm by successfully adding the heartwarming HART OF DIXIE and the dark and twisty RINGER to its roster of veteran hour longs. The Bad: Nobody’s watching! Which is to say that with the exception of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and one perfectly timed MUPPET special, the first half of the CW’s season saw the majority of the its schedule stalled between the 1 to 2 million viewer mark. And while actual audience levels of the youth oriented Network are undoubtedly more when you incorporate DVR numbers, legal and dare-we-say-it, illegal online alternatives — the simple fact of the matter is that based on the traditional method in which audiences are measured and advertising is sold — the CW Network remains a virtual non-factor from a pure ratings point of view. Which brings us to… The Future: Despite Mark Pedowitz’s...

NBC Gets its Mid-Season Report Card
2011-12-09 22:41:00
The Good: The NLF didn’t go on strike, allowing for Sunday Night Football to be singled out as one of the only bright spots on NBC’s disastrous Fall schedule. Also good, if only because we feel somewhat bad to move onto the negative so quickly, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE had a uncharacteristically solid first half of the season thanks to handful of stellar hosts including Alec Baldwin, Melissa McCarthy, Emma Stone, Jason Segal and Steve Buscemi. The Bad: How much time do you have? Which is to say, we have a feeling that all newly-minted NBC President Robert Greenblatt wants for Christmas is for this calendar year to be over. After-all, not only did America summarily reject THE PLAYBOY CLUB, PRIME SUSPECTS and FREE AGENTS, they haven’t exactly warmed up to UP ALL NIGHT, WHITNEY, not to mention Andy Bernard as the new boss on THE OFFICe. Scarier still, unlike previous Peacock Presidents who were content to allow time for their critically acclaimed gems to grow (see: 30 ROC...
FOX Gets its Mid-Season Report Card
2011-12-08 22:31:00
The Good: For the second time in the Network’s history, Fox came out on top during the pivotal November Sweeps period where it counts, in the coveted 18-49 demographic. But before we get into at what cost (more on that later) let’s focus on the positive. Helping to contribute to Fox’s boffo Fall was newcomer Zooey Deschanel’s NEW GIRL, Sunday’s appropriately branded Animation Domination” lineup (Including THE SIMPSONS and the Seth MacFarlane trifecta of FAMILY GUY, CLEVELAND SHOW, AMERICAN DAD!) and GLEE (Which despite a ratings downtick still maintained very a healthy rating in the 18-49 demo). More good news came in the form of BONES, which defied the MOONLIGHTING curse thanks to a perfectly timed real-life pregnancy of star Emily Deschanel and THE X FACTOR. Which brings us to… The Bad: While Fox will certainly tout THE X FACTOR as a big err… factor when it came to helping to contribute to its decisive November Sweeps victory, its 10-12 mil...

Speaker Boehner Statement on November Unemployment Report
2011-12-03 04:53:00
Speaker Boehner Statement on November Unemployment Report WASHINGTON, DC (Dec 2)House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its unemployment report for November 2011:?Any job creation is welcome news, but the jobless rate in this country is still unacceptable. Today marks the 34th consecutive month of unemployment above eight percent. As you may remember, the Obama administration promised unemployment would stay below eight percent if its ?stimulus? was enacted. That promise has gone unfulfilled.?Because the president?s policies have failed, the House has passed a series of bills designed to remove government barriers to private sector job creation. There are now 25 bipartisan jobs bills passed by the House awaiting a vote in the Senate. The key to getting all of these jobs measures enacted is the United States Senate. President Obama should use this opportunity to call on Senate Democrats to immediately give these b...

IEA Report Advises Governments to Embrace Renewables and Nuclear
2011-11-15 16:40:00
The good news is that on 8 November the International Energy Agency released its 2011 "World Energy Outlook." While it will cheer nuclear advocates, overall the report makes for grim reading. Pulling no punches, the report states at the outset, "There are few signs that the urgently needed change in direction in global energy trends is underway." Stripped of its cautious language, the IEA report essentially noted that should present trends continue, the world’s governments through a lack of progressive initiative embracing alternative energy sources would continue to rely on ‘tried and true" fossil fuels, resulting in increased pollution, more fossil-fuel dependency and increasingly upward energy prices. For environmentalists, this is all good news, but the report contained . . . → Read More: IEA Report Advises Governments to Embrace Renewables and Nuclear

Japan’s six reactor Fukushima Daichi nuclear complex has inadvertently become the world’s bell-weather poster child for the inherent risks of nuclear power ever since the 11 March Tohoku offshore earthquake, measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, triggered a devastating tsunami that effectively destroyed the complex. Ever since, specialists have wrangled about how damaging the consequences of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami actually were, not only for the facility but the rest of the world. The Fukushima Daichi complex was one of the 25 largest nuclear power stations in the world and the Fukushima I reactor was the first GE designed nuclear plant to be constructed and run entirely by the Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO. The Anonymous Group, who starred in the second quarter, has continued making the headlines in this period, due to the arrest of some members, theft of data from different web sites and operation PayPal. The PandaLabs report also includes information about cybercrime, cyberwar, social networks, Mac and cell phones, social networks and a wide section to explain about exploits. Silver Summit Report: Three Investment Approaches to the Volatile Metal
2011-10-21 23:00:00
The Gold Report: We always hear of silver servicing two masters: one is the industrial use of silver, and the other is the physical, investing use of silver. Both of these forces are vulnerable to global turmoil manifested in the European debt crisis, slowing growth in China and a potential currency crisis in the West. What is your prognosis for silver in this environment? James Turk: It is true that silver has two entirely different demands. One is an industrial component, much like base metals. However, like gold, it also has a monetary component. I view silver as gold’s little brother. When money comes into the gold sector, it’s going to have a bigger impact on silver than . . . → Read More: Silver Summit Report: Three Investment Approaches to the Volatile Metal
