Erin Andrews voted most influential TV reporter
2009-07-27 22:41:00 More at Zennie62.com | Follow me on Twitter! | Get my widget! | Visit YouTube | Visit UShow.com From the "You've gotta be kidding me" department, we have the news that ESPN's on-air reporter Erin Andrews has been voted "the most influential TV reporter" in a contest established by website Mediaite.com. If you're wondering just who Erin Andrews is and have been under a rock, first consult my video above, then come back here. To recap, Erin Andrews is the ESPN reporter that was the focus - literally - of someone taking a peephole camcorder video of her in the nude, in a hotel room. The suspect has still not been identified or captured as of this writing, while some believe it may have been a co-worker at ESPN. With that action, Erin Andrews has emerged from unknown to known, and to "most infuential reporter" in two-weeks. Before we look closely at that, let's see who she passed up to gain the lofty title. The Mediaite Power Grid contains 290 reporters in its selection ...

The Beachwood Reporter: Conquering the 'Net One Niche at a Time
2009-07-01 07:45:00 I seldom take seriously local bloggers intent on taking over the online world. That is, with one exception: Steve Rhodes, Publisher and Editor of The Beachwood Reporter. Heading one of Chicago's top, homegrown news and content networks, every day Rhodes goes up against the best and brightest of the Windy City blogosphere (including Chitown Daily News, Chicagoist, Gapers Block, Huffington Post Chicago, and the folks right here at ChicagoNow) to tell the story of this town from a deliberately critical perspective. It's a curious kilter with major merit for those who believe the real commodity has never been the dryly objective news, but the subjective newspaper that has always surrounded it in opinionated juiciness....
Two strange stories, one dumbfounded reporter
2009-06-26 16:45:00 I had two strange experiences this week. Well, individually, they weren't that strange on their own. But they happened within about five minutes of each other, and that made them especially odd. I was down at Cabrini-Green, working on two stories. I needed to take some pictures. Taking pictures is something I always do gingerly. It's sort of like pointing - there's a reason your mom told you not to. It makes people uncomfortable. And yet, I'm a reporter. I gotta take pictures. It's part of my job. The new rowhousesSo, I'm down by the rowhouses, taking pictures of the new rehabbed ones. And this guy sees me and calls out to me, following me down the street. Eventually, he...

Iran: Reporter From US Arrested After Buying Wine
2009-03-01 23:24:00 FARGO, N.D. - A U.S. journalist has been arrested in Iran, and her father said Sunday she told him in a brief phone call she was detained after buying a bottle of wine.Roxana Saberi, 31, has not been heard from since her last call on Feb. 10, her father, Reza, told The Associated Press on Sunday."We haven't heard anything," he said. The family decided to go public, he said, "because we wanted to get some information."Officials in Iran have not publicly confirmed the arrest. A duty officer at the U.S. State Department said Sunday they were looking into an AP request for information on the case.Human rights groups have repeatedly criticized Iran for arresting journalists and suppressing freedom of speech. The government has arrested several Iranian-Americans in the past few years, citing alleged attempts to overthrow its Islamic regime. The most high-profile case came in 2007, when Iran arrested four Iranian-Americans, including the academic Haleh Esfandiari. The four were imprisoned...
Reporter Arrested by Sec. Service, Jumped Rope Line Seeking Obama Autograph
2009-02-06 20:39:00 -By Warner Todd Huston A reporter apparently couldn’t resist the siren call of The One yesterday, so, like a star struck 15-year old at a Hannah Montana concert, he jumped the rope line separating the press from the president and ran up to him seeking Obama’s autograph. Needless to say the Secret Service was not amused, interdicted ...

Iraqi Reporter Throws Shoes At Bush
2008-12-15 13:26:00 source: news.yahoo.comKABUL, Afghanistan ? President George W. Bush wrapped up a whirlwind trip to two war zones Monday that in many ways was a victory lap without a clear victory and left thousands protesting in Iraq streets. A signature event occurred when an Iraqi reporter hurled two shoes at Bush, declaring: "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."The president visited the Iraqi capital just 37 days before he hands the war off to his successor, Barack Obama, who has pledged to end it. The president wanted to highlight a drop in violence and to celebrate a recent U.S.-Iraq security agreement, which calls for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011."The war is not over," Bush said, but "it is decisively on its way to being won.""The war is not over," Bush said, but "it is decisively on its way to being won."Bush then traveled to Afghanistan where he spoke to U.S. soldiers and Marines at a hangar on the tarmac at Bagram Air Base. How To Cover The Olympics: A Reporter's Cliché Book.
2008-08-02 15:11:00 Simon Elegant has a great post up over at the Time China Blog, entitled, "A Reporter's Guide To Covering The Olympics." The post is a tongue in cheek guide on how to hit every cliché when reporting on China. Sadly, much of it does read almost line for line of what passes for coverage in so many Western publications. Fortunately, the entire Western daily press does not follow this guide and if you want coverage of China that consistently goes beyond this guide, I suggest you read the following newspapers: 1. Wall Street Journal; 2. Washington Post; 3. Financial Times; 4. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/-02/world/asia/02china.html?_r=1-&hp&oref=sloginNew York Times. (Its headlines seem to frequently follow Elegant's guide, but its stories do not always). Any others? Oh, and one more thing, Beijing's air is that bad. Sorry.

R. Kelly Trial: Reporter Jim DeRogatis Ordered To Testify About Sex Tape
2008-05-30 10:11:00 Defense wants to prove Chicago Sun-Times writer tampered with or created evidence.By Jennifer Vineyard R. Kelly (file) Photo: Tasos Katopodis/ Getty Images CHICAGO — Though he tried to fight it, Chicago Sun-Times reporter Jim DeRogatis will be forced to testify in R. Kelly's child-pornography trial, Judge Vincent Gaughan ruled when he issued a subpoena for the reporter on Friday (May 30). The defense, however, will not be allowed to ask DeRogatis about his sources. In February 2002, DeRogatis (along with fellow Sun-Times reporter Abdon Pallasch) broke the story about the existence of the alleged Kelly sex tape, a copy of which he received from an anonymous source and later turned in to the police. Defense attorney Marc Martin argued that since the tape had been in DeRogatis' "sole and exclusive possession," they needed the reporter's testimony to establish chain of custody. But more than that, he argued, the defense needed to establish whether DeRogatis tampered ...
