Fresh from the Brentwood Farmers? Market - 06.08.07
2008-06-08 23:55:00
I spend a lot of time mulling over the fact that I live on a busy street in a busy part of Los Angeles, and I often wonder if living within walking distance of some of my favorite things is worth fighting the traffic Monday through Friday.  But, when I walk to the Brentwood Farmers’ ...

Sign outside Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop on 5th Avenue and 22nd Street, and, incidentally, my second-ever online self-portrait (here's the first). Where's the chocolate lady?ETA: While one of the reviews on the site to which I linked describes the menu as "kosher comfort food," Eisenberg's, while a very good neighbor and a venerable landmark, is not a kosher establishment, and I do not mean to suggest that it is.
Update on Resolutions: 1 Months Down; 11 To Go
2008-02-03 16:09:00
Since January has come and gone, so I thought it would be good to update everyone as to where I am with my resolutions. I decided to score myself on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being no resolution success and 10 for fully meeting goal success. When I do an average of each ranking below, I come in at 5.5 out of 10. That is not what I hoped, but above 50%; besides it is only one-month. I will get there. Here is where I stand:1. I will commit to trying my best to be healthier. Update: 3 out of 10; Dale and I started strong, but again got busy and let our busy lives derail us. We are planning to start again today with a focus on eating smaller portions more often and exercise at least 4 times weekly.2. I will commit to not letting anyone bring negativity into my life. Update: 6 out of 10; I feel I am doing well with this overall. I even read a great book, Energy Bus on this subject.3. I will commit to telling Dale that I love him every day. Update: 10 out of 10; I did this every day. It is...
Keep Up With Your 2008 Resolutions
2008-02-03 11:40:00
This is a post from SuperBloggingTips.com, a make money online blog. Photo credits: reportergimmi. We’re past a month into the year 2008, which is a great time to look over our blogging goals and resolutions and see how much we’ve accomplished and how we’re doing so far. It’s easy to get distracted and completely forget about goals, but if you do checkups every now and then to remind yourself, you’ll be ahead of even your own expectations before you know it. Let’s take a look at my New Year resolutions. I wanted to work on increasing subscribers, guesting posting more often, building my communities, networking, commenting, getting into a regular posting schedule, building backlinks, working on SEO, learning code, and of course more make money online tactics. I set plenty of goals to keep myself busy this year and to pose a challenge, but not enough to be simply overwhelming. After doing a quick evaluation, I believe I am doing okay but there is d...
New Year?s Resolutions That Count
2008-02-03 00:00:00
Making a New Year’s Resolution means setting goals for the upcoming year that you want to accomplish. Most of the time these goals are things that in some way will improve your quality of life. Many of them are related to fitness, health, well being or losing weight. This year, as you start thinking ...
Resolutions for Homeowners - Part II
2008-01-31 00:12:00
Here is the second two of 10 resolutions that the American Homeowners Foundation urges all Homeowners to adopt this year. One of the best New Years Resolutions homeowners can make is to eliminate expenses that are unnecessary and have no benefit. This is a tall order for many of us, with implications ranging from how you finance your mortgage to the energy efficiency of your home. Nevertheless it's a very worthwhile exercise which will affect your current and future lifestyle. Many have already made some of the following ten 2008 New Years Resolutions for American Homeowners, but few probably addressed them all. Resolution #3: I won't let fears of dropping home values, the mortgage market meltdown, and the growing risk of a recession stop me from purchasing a home in 2008. Many homeowners have decided to put off the consideration of a home purchase because of these concerns, but in many cases those fears are unwarranted. If you want to move in ...
Keeping New Year's Resolutions
2008-01-30 03:54:00
Well, it is almost the end of January, and so far, I've kept some resolutions (hooray!). One of my resolutions this year was to keep better records. This was precipitated by the fact that we had to file our federal taxes late (we got an extension) because my husband had an emergency appendectomy just before tax time. Plus, I found I was often puzzled with the question: "Where did all that money go?" I'm combining low tech and high tech. Low tech: I have a small notebook I carry with me everywhere which slips into a clear plastic case which closes and holds loose papers. In there go all the receipts as well as notes, e.g. cash, credit card, ATM, reimbursed, non-reimbursed, etc. High tech: I have done an Excel spread sheet where I'm recording the same data. My late mother-in-law, for all the years I knew her, lived very frugally, and always recorded every penny she spent. I can't honestly say I'm recording every penny, but it is enlightening to see w...

Resolutions for Homeowners - Part I

Many have already made some of the following ten 2008 New Years Resolutions for American Homeowners, but few probably addressed them all. Resolution #1: I will get my home finances in order. Despite all the disaster stories about the mortgage meltdown, mortgage interest rates are relatively low and widely available to creditworthy homeowners. This is therefore a good time to review how you are financing your home. You may be able to save money, reduce financial risks, imp...

Why New Years Resolutions Fail
2008-01-25 16:04:00
The gym is less crowded now. It's amazing how packed it got just after the new year when all the couch potatoes made their resolutions to get fit and into shape. The place was teeming with folks with their new work-out clothes, water bottles and good intentions, but alas, most are nowhere to be seen after a few short weeks. Why is it that resolutions always seem to fail? Why do good intentions fall by the wayside? The man reason is that most people make decisions based upon emotion or emotional reaction, and we all know how fickle and changeable emotions can be. Perhaps they looked in the mirror and hated what they saw. Perhaps a little kid made an innocent comment, like the 3 year old in the hot tub with his dad yesterday. When a very fat lady showed up to take a dip he couldn't take his eyes off her, shocked as he was by her large size in such a small bathing suit. The young man was so appalled by what he saw that he insisted, ordered, out loud, that his dad look away to the righ...
Broken Resolutions
2008-01-25 06:01:00
YIKES! We’ve not even reached the end of January, and every single new year’s resolution has evaporated. We really did have good intentions. Teachers and therapists had resolved to read up on the latest research and strategies so they could increase their abilities to provide top-notch services to their students and clients with autism and other challenges. Parents really meant to help their youngster with potty-training or with daily exercise and they were truly committed to taking time to read to their child every night. But all of the resolutions have already been moved to the back burner. Listen Now: or (more…)

My Resolutions for 2008
2008-01-19 04:19:00
Artwork by ~MarendigellSomehow I find it easier to achieve the gruelling KPIs of my work, then my yearly personal resolutions. It's as though I have taken myself for granted.Fortunately for me, I am quite a goal-oriented person. Once I've set my mind on something, I will work towards gettting there. Maybe for personal goals, it will take me a while - but yeh, I will get there. :)And here are my resolutions for 2008. Check back again with me at the end of the year - and we will do an audit of how far I would have come.1. Exercise regularly.I have been pretty sickly last year - and have been told by my numerous concerned friends that maybe I should get out into the sun more and move my lazy ass. Exercise helps improve blood circulation and sleep, boosts the immune system, and of course, keeps my ballooning weight in check.I don't seem to have a choice if I want to reduce the number of days I have been on sick leave. So I resolve to take NO medical leave this year! Big Fat Hairy Re...

Resolutions, Deep and Shallow
2008-01-17 22:51:00
I’m mystified as to why it’s suddenly unfashionable to make New Year’s Resolutions under the theory that they’re impossible to keep. I’m a huge fan of resolutions, but there’s an art to making them. I discovered this the year I resolved to make more salads.  I can take them or leave them, but my husband salivates ...

What Will You Change to Stick to Your New Year Resolutions?
2008-01-11 17:20:00
"To keep thinking the same way while expecting a different result is one definition of insanity." - Albert EinsteinDid you start the year with good intentions, make new year resolutions yet find you are already falling behind?Typical resolutions are:stop smoking, lose weight, drink less alcohol, earn more money, start or increase exercise, find time for relaxation or meditation, spend more time with the kids, read a book a week, learn a new language or skill, write a book etc.The problem is that the year may have changed from 2007 to 2008 but what changed in you? Unless you reach the point where the pain of continuing the old behaviour is greater than the pleasure received, you will not change. It is the pain and pleasure syndrome. You know you want to lose weight but it is so easy to pretend that your jeans shrank in the wash and slop around in stretchy sport joggings. Perhaps even buy the next size and claim that the shop has its sizes wrong! It is only when your trousers cut i...
