A Night on the Town Ends with Respect
2008-05-29 21:01:00 I went down to Water Street with my cousin last night, and we made our way to a few popular spots. At our last stop I ran into an old friend who I used to play basketball with during our younger days. My friend has recently returned from a 14 month tour in Iraq. Now, granted, there is much we don't agree on politically. However, we were able to sit down and have a wonderful conversation on topics all across the spectrum. He was interested in the time I spent in Thailand; I was interested in the time he spent in Iraq. We shared stories and, by the end of the night, exchanged numbers. And when we shook hands to go our separate ways, I felt an overwhelming sense of respect for my friend.This is why--in the end--America is the greatest country in the world: friends (and enemies) can engage in discussions and debates on any topic under the sun.I am glad when those discussions can be respectfully meaningful, and I look forward to seeing my friend again soon.

As a Baby Boomer, I believe it’s important for us to talk to our kids and students about doube checking our typos, showing up on time, how to listen, how to ask great questions and how to be a leader. Another skill that many Gen Y’s are saying is missing is face to face time, especially face to face networking. Human connection happens through dialogue, through a smile and through telling stories which build common ground. Let’s all take the time to work on these skills that Chuck mentions. Both of us play on them and enjoy their boundaries and yet both of us know that a mountain is a living, breathing entity that like any other force of nature; controls us and not the converse. It is perhaps a misunderstanding of this that leads some to meet with dire consequences on the mountain, but not for me. If I were to get injured or die in the mountains, it would not be for lack of respect given to the mountains, but for some other reason altogether. I understand who?s in charge when I?m up there and that is at the front of my mind whether I?m gliding down well-groomed slopes on the trails of a ski resort, hiking the Appalachian Trail, or skiing the backcountry of New England.
