Meet Your Neighbors: Why Does Reston Hate America?
2008-03-28 04:40:00 It's somewhat shocking that a community that had its roots in the free-thinking 1960s would attract people who would dare protest the 5th birthday of our Glorious Reworking of the Middle East by standing in front of such glorious beacons of democracy as the Pizzeria Unos and the (appropriately named?) Banana Republic. The irony? While the protesters were carrying around signs saying "it's all about the oil," their lovely stucco-and-cardboard residences sit on land developed by an evil oil company, whose name -- and here comes the double irony! -- refers to the sandy region we've worked so hard to liberate and/or bomb, all because -- and here comes the triple, hat-trick irony! -- oil was so darned cheap back then that said evil oil conglomerate chose to invest in real estate to make more money! Oil cheap and real estate hot? Talk about a crazy, upside down world!Anyway, if these folks truly had the courage of their convictions, they'd move to a community that wasn't created from...
Presidential passport breach: Why do contractors have easy access to sensit
2008-03-23 19:25:00 The accessing of private passport-based travel data of all three Presidential candidates by contractors working for the State Department has finally galvanized Capitol Hill to address the issue of privacy–something we’ve been begging them to do for years. Ron Wyden sums it up succinctly: “The Government Accountability Office has been warning about this problem for a decade. And it seems to me in this administration, there’s been pretty much a culture of disregard for privacy, and that’s part of the problem,” he said. Wyden may have been referring to a 2006 report from the GAO documenting the lack of oversight in sharing Social Security Numbers with contractors working for various federal agencies, including the IRS and the FBI, as well as within the private sector. It is but one of many reports the investigative agency has issued documenting the serious vulnerabilities our government’s mad drive to outsource its functions to the private sect...
Reston's Vibrant Economy, pt. 17: How the Reston Home Depot singlehandedly
2008-03-20 14:14:00 Reston's awesome Home Depot(tm), which is a great place to wander around and stare randomly at various home-improvement implements like doors and huge sheaths of siding (hopefully they're up to snuff in the Cluster of the Year(tm)!) and terlets and whatnot before buying a tacky potted plant and a box of Tic-Tacs and slinking out the door, apparently just singlehandedly solved the global warming crisis, with a little help of coal-plant loving Dominion power:Jenna Caudillo of Falls Church, Va., today purchased the 1 millionth compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb sold under Dominion Virginia Power's discount program for the energy- and money-saving bulbs. Caudillo purchased the bulb at The Home Depot in Reston."At our house we try to do little things to reduce the impact on the environment and save money," said Caudillo. "We have found replacing regular bulbs to be a simple and cost-effective way to reduce our electric bill and help the environment without any noticeable change to o...

2008-03-20 14:03:00 Remember Columbia, that other planned community in Maryland with lots of earth tones and Satanic street names and a distaste for all things related to Christmas? Well, they're at it again. When that planned community was designed, in their infinite wisdom planners decided to reserve the absolute heart and soul of the town, its geographical and spiritual center, for a shopping mall. Yeah, that Orange Julius was awesome. Anyhoo, they're planning to revitalize their "town center" and whatnot, and even though they brought in one of the people behind Reston's Fake Downtown, folks there know one thing: they don't want their awesome mall to look like Reston's Fake Downtown. Resident Sal Cosentino said he didn't want to see a "high-density downtown area" in Columbia, like Ward designed in Reston Town Center. Cosentino, who has visited Reston, said he felt as though he were being "compressed by buildings." There was scattered applause.Yeah, that's definitely how we feel when we wander...

2008-03-05 06:14:00 When the awesome Westin Hotel in Reston Heights opens in April, it won't just be a place for weary business travelers to sit in darkened conference facilities and watch pay-per-view porn once they're back in their rooms. It'll be exciting for local residents as well! The upcoming opening of the Westin Reston Heights will spark the launch of the 35-acre Reston Heights project, a master-planned community that will serve as a decidedly upscale lifestyle center."While many people primarily associate Reston with Reston Town Center, there is so much more to our town, and we are thrilled to play a major role in bringing new opportunities to the community," said The Westin Reston Heights Director of Sales and Marketing David Catalon.According to Westin Reston Heights General Manager Sami Zeitoun, the hotel will be a hub for area residents as well. In addition to offering residents the opportunity to energize their spirits with a relaxing weekend getaway, the hotel will unveil Vinifera, a ...

2008-02-28 15:28:00 In anticipation of its upcoming renovation, the Reston Museum is holding an auction tonight. Just think -- you could own one of the items that makes the museum so popular with foreign tourists. The auction, to be held Thursday, Feb. 28, will have a silent portion from 5:30-6:30 p.m. followed by a live auction. Phil Tobey will be the auctioneer.Items for both auctions consist of donated Reston memorabilia and items that aren't necessarily a good fit for the museum.“We have a lot of other things people would enjoy but are not really appropriate for us to keep; either we have duplicates or they're not relevant to the history,” she said.Lillienthal said one of the more interesting items is an abstract ink drawing by Jim Rosant, one of the original architects of Lake Anne Plaza. The drawing was donated by Bob and Cheryl Simon.Another is an out-of-print book by Tom Grubisich titled "Reston: The First Twenty Years." Grubisich is a writer and former longtime resident of Reston.Awesome ...

2008-02-25 16:09:00 Remember how Herndon's Crowne Plaza hotel was going to host that awesome, vaguely racist conference? About 50 protesters tried to enter the hotel to disrupt the American Renaissance Conference on Saturday, but police held them back. Too bad, because it sounds like they missed quite a show inside:Among the seminars were "Understanding the African Mind" and "Mexico From the Inside: Who the Mexicans Are and Why They Do What They Do.'' For sale outside conference rooms were neckties decorated with Confederate emblems and books such as "Race Differences in Intelligence'' and "Zoological Subspecies of Man.''The Post felt compelled to point out that of the 100 attendees, "most of them [were] white men." You think?Meanwhile, Jared Taylor, the group's founder, pointed to national politics to say they're not so extreme after all:Taylor said a theme of the conference was the intersection of immigration and race, which he said is reflected in the presidential campaign. 2008-02-20 17:45:00 Ah, Herndon... city of tolerance, now-uncrowded 7-11 parking lots and K-Mart. What awesome news do you have to share?Remember that time a Herndon hotel was going to host a fun racist convention this weekend? Well, it's still on, and protesters are planning to demonstrate.David Welliver, General Manager of the Crowne Plaza hotel in Herndon, told The Times that despite extreme pressure, he has no plans to cancel the event, which will take place Feb. 22-24.The biannual New Century Foundation/American Renaissance convention is organized by Oakton resident Jared Taylor, who calls himself a "race realist" and publishes American Renaissance magazine, which he has done for nearly 20 years."Taylor is a Nazi pig," Jeff Adler, spokesman for the militant group Jewish Defense Organization, told The Times in November. Upon hearing about the convention, Adler began a campaign, called Operation Nazi-Kicker, to prompt the Crowne Plaza hotel to cancel what he called the "meeting of hate." He also sa...

Reston Real Estate: The High-Low Game, pt. 4
2008-01-23 16:15:00 It's time once again to play everyone's favorite declining real estate market game: High-Low!We start with a townhouse on White Cornus Lane. Priced at $199,900, it's the cheapest non-condo currently available in Reston. But don't think it's your typical dated Reston townhouse... it's actually brand new! Well, sort of.This 2 level townhouse needs just a little TLC... Update the kitchen, new paint, and carpet means new house. Priced to sell. But aren't they all? Aren't they all...Meanwhile, we decided to skip the usual faux-rock-faced McMansion piles around Rt. 7 and looked for the priciest house within Reston proper. 'Reston Heights': Back in Reruns
2008-01-11 15:36:00 The awesome Reston Heights development and its 2,800 parking spaces of gridlock-inducing fun will have to wait a bit longer: Fairfax County Supervisors deferred a decision on the project until Jan. 28.Hunter Mill district Supervisor Cathy Hudgins recommended the deferral because she said there had been a few last-minute changes to the proposal that needed further review.Ben Tompkins, who represented The JBG Companies at Monday's board meeting, said the project would provide a "much-needed amenity basis for south Reston," and that the developer plans to pursue Leadership in Energy and Environment Design Silver status, which is earned by "green" buildings that meet specific energy efficiency requirements."Much-needed amenity basis" must be developer-speak for "another awesome restaurant like Chili's." But what about traffic? However, three of the four residents who spoke at the public hearing said they had concerns about traffic problems the development would create along Sunrise Val...
This Week, Another Very Special 'Reston Heights'
2008-01-10 17:03:00 The awesome Reston Heights development, with its four high-rise buildings and parking spaces and complete and utter lack of access to the proposed Metro station across the highway is apparently ready to go before the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The development from JBG Cos. — dubbed Reston Heights — won approval from the Planning Commission in November and will come before the board at its first meeting of 2008. If approved, the development along Sunrise Valley Drive would bring a 10-acre cluster of dense urban growth to the outlying planned community. It’s one of numerous projects that developers hope to install along the path of the planned Dulles Rail extension, and the local opposition that has mounted around it could be a warning sign of many land-use fights to come.“We know we’re dealing with a juggernaut here,” said Fred Rothwarf, who lives in the Hunters Green cluster and is working to mobilize opposition to JBG’s proposal. “And the possibility of havi...
'Is the Reston dream dying?'
2008-01-09 15:34:00 That's the question Tom Grubisich asked in Sunday's Washington Post. According to him, the answer is yes.* Lake Anne Center -- Simon's crown jewel -- has deteriorated because of weak and fractured local leadership and a county government that moves as fast as a three-legged tortoise.* The nature center that Simon promised shortly before he was ousted has finally progressed to the drawing board, albeit stripped of its "green" construction features.* The regional library that was built 25 years ago is insufficient to serve Reston's digital generation. * Reston's extensive network of stream valleys -- the centerpiece of its thousand acres of open space -- has been ravaged by pollution and runoff.* Thousands of homes hastily built during the early years of the post-Simon construction boom are headed toward dilapidation. Living in a ca. 1970 home in which few surfaces still meet at 90-degree angles, we'd say there was plenty of shoddy building during the Simon era as well. But all ...

2008-01-04 15:54:00 Herndon continues to be a shining example for its less enlightened neighbor to the east.First, they're doing gangbuster business in bringing in the convention trade, or at least the racist convention trade:The biannual New Century Foundation convention is organized by Oakton resident Jared Taylor, who calls himself a "race realist" and publishes American Renaissance magazine, which he has done for nearly 20 years. The 2008 convention will take place Feb. 22-24 in Herndon."Taylor is a Nazi pig," Jeff Adler, spokesman for the Jewish Defense Organization, a militant group not affiliated with the Jewish Defense League, said in a phone interview. Now that doesn't sound very tolerant! Just because such luminaries as David Duke somehow show up to the group's meeting each year doesn't make them bad guys, right?"Yes, David Duke has attended despite being asked to stay away, but it's like if you have a restaurant and David Duke eats there, does that make you a neo-Nazi?" Taylor said. That ...
This Week in Crime: a mob scene in South Reston
2008-01-04 15:47:00 That awesome New Year's stabbing? Just a run of the mill mob attack.A Reston mob allegedly attacked two 19-year-old Maryland men after they dropped off a friend at her home near the intersection of Glade Drive and Marginella Drive. On Tuesday, Jan. 1, around 1:30 a.m., the two men attempted to drive away when a group of 10 to 15 men surrounded the victims' vehicle. One of the men reached through a back window and stabbed a passenger in the back. Another member of the group punched the driver. The driver pulled away and called 911. Once help arrived, the stabbing victim was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The driver was not seriously injured.Police arrested a 17-year-old Reston man in connection with the assault and charged him with assault by mob, destruction of property, and brandishing of a firearm. There were no descriptions of other group members provided to police and there have been no arrests for the stabbing.Fairfax County police say the mob assault "could" be gang-related...
Road Rules, Reston style
2008-01-03 06:05:00 Lots of awesome news about roads in and around Reston:First, Rt. 7 will be widened from somewhere beyond Reston Avenue west to Loudoun County. Of course, no public project even tangentially involving Reston (cough cough schools cough cough Metro) can get underway without some nearby, usually overentitled community crying foul. Oakton's currently otherwise occupied, so who's this week's winner? Survey says.... Great Falls! What is particularly irritating to Great Falls residents is the perception that most of the users of the new turn lanes on Route 7 will be Loudoun County residents using the Georgetown Pike as a cut-through commuter route."You are providing cut-through routes for people from Loudoun County," one Great Falls resident said."We are here working with facts. We can't say here are 300 people on the Georgetown Pike; let's build an exclusive left-turn lane for them," said Salahshoor.Funny, we thought being exclusive is what Great Falls is all about. Of course, we can'...
On a very special Reston Heights: Scented Candles!
2007-12-14 14:20:00 Coming soon on Reston Heights: a fancy, high-class hotel will rise Phoenix-like from the ashes ofnear the Chili's and Popeyes. How fancy, you might ask? How high-class? Two words: scented candles! The Westin Reston Heights announced Thursday that its official opening date will be April 10 and established a sales office where it is showcasing the new hotel's amenities. The Westin brand, which aims to create a calming environment for travelers, provides guests with fresh flowers, the hotel's signature pillowtop bed and White Tea by Westin scented candles. The 191-room Reston Heights hotel will feature 1,200 square feet of meeting space, a workout facility, a rooftop pool and a restaurant serving locally produced sustainable seafood, according to David Catalon, sales and marketing director. Wow. We hope that means they'll be serving algae-fed crappie from Lake Anne.
Meanwhile, in the other Anti-Reston...
2007-12-13 14:18:00 When people talk about new urbanism and awesome, earth tone-intensive planned communities, they usually mention Reston and Columbia, Maryland, in the same breath. Like Reston, Columbia is a product of the 1960s, a planned community which features much of the same persistent earth tones and questionable contemporary architecture. Unlike Reston and its awesome fake downtown, though, Columbia opted to plop a generic shopping mall right in the center of town.Well, maybe not so generic. For the first time, the Columbia Mall has ditched its Poinsettia Christmas Tree, this metal-framed thing that held up a bunch of potted plants prompting people to open their wallets a little bit wider at the nearby Bon-Ton or Orange Julius or whatever."The Tree was a symbol of how Columbia was different," said Dennis Lane, who grew up in the town, blogs about it and writes a column for the Business Monthly, a local paper. "It's a non-political statement, a thing of beauty. I live in Ellicott City now, an...
Meet Your Neighbors: Sizzlin' Reston Singles!
2007-12-10 17:08:00 Reston used to have the knock of being a horrible place for single people. Of course, that was back in Reston's Dark Ages (or as we like to call them, the Mauve Ages), long before the movie theater and fake downtown and Macaroni Grill made the New Town a sizzling place for the glitterati to see and be seen.Well, maybe not. But here in the middle of the always-exciting Dulles Technology Corridor(tm), what do you do between layoffs and gawdawful commutes when you're looking for love? Form an Internet meetup group, of course! You'll see that, whether you are looking to meet that possible "someone", or simply wanting to meet other single people in the same "single boat" as you to hang out with, this group will provide you with those opportunities and you'll meet great people along the way! What kind of opportunities, you might ask? Well, here's a shockingly graphic picture of the debauchery you can expect from the Reston-based Singles in the Suburbs(tm) gatherings. Before you scroll ...

2007-12-05 16:27:00 Herndon has joined something called the Coalition on Illegal Aliens, a group of Minuteman-intensive area localities. It's in fine company with such other enlightened locales as the town of Culpeper, Shenandoah County and Prince William, where the campaign theme of the fall elections was pretty much "let's hate on the immigrants."Martin Bernal, a community leader in Culpeper, said it has seemed lately as though the whole Latino community has been under attack. "Things have really picked up since Prince William came out with that plan," he said. "They are blaming us for everything that's going wrong in this country and with the economy."But Herndon's even more awesome! Because of its unprecedented success in shutting down its day laborer center and protecting free and unfettered access to its 7-11s and the precious bodily fluids offered therein (Mr. Pibb!), Herndon Mayor Stephen J. DeBenedittis will chair the group. Because, you know, now that the day laborer center is closed, the...
Reston Real Estate: The High-Low Game, pt. 3
2007-12-03 18:25:00 Who says the housing market is moribund? Both of the Southgate Square charmers from our past High-Low challenges are currently under contract, making this townhouse on Captiva Court the cheapest non-condo in Reston, at $209,900. Of course, here's a sign of the times:BANK OWNED* Property needs some TLC. With a little work this property could really shine.Bring all offers! Special addendum required.Anyone know what that "special addendum" might entail?Or, for the low, low price of $2.3 million--more than any single-family McMansion currently on the market--you could live in this awesome loft above Reston Town Center. That'll require a $8,723 a month mortgage, which means you probably won't have much money left to live that edgy, Sex In the City urban lifestyle by eating al fresco at Pizzeria Uno with your equally edgy, ironic friends every night. On the bright side, no special addendum required here.
Why does Reston Town Center hate America? (an in-depth investigation)
2007-11-16 19:31:00 A few weeks back, we learned that the Reston Town Center Association has thus far declined to support the push for a referendum on turning Reston into a nifty town, encircled by moats filled with fire-breathing dragons and mauve-colored city walls. But that's just the half of it.An exclusive Restonian investigation (OK, so maybe we just Googled "Reston Town Center" and "hates America") has revealed that the Reston Town Center isn't just against a plebiscite election that may or may not contravene state law, it's against America itself! Read this chilling first-person account:This is what a photo of Reston Town Center looks like when you don't fill out a form to get a camera permit. For those who don't know, Reston Town Center (in Reston, Fairfax County, Virginia) is one of those shopping centers that use the illusion of a lively cultural district to lure you in to spend your money. I can't show you, but try to picture a neighborhood of streets, parking garages, offices, apartm...
The writers strike appears to be affecting the "Reston Heights" soap opera,
2007-11-12 16:37:00 Fairfax County planners postpone a decision on the Reston Heights mixed-use project on Sunrise Valley Road until after Thanksgiving. Won't the fall sweeps be over by then?
This week, on a very special Reston Heights...
2007-11-07 16:05:00 The development-cum-soap opera was approved 9-2 by the Reston Planning and Zoning Committee. While the development company, JBG Retail, was tight-lipped about the project when talking to community members last week, some more details emerged during the hearing:The existing buildings on the site, which include a 7-Eleven, Wachovia Bank, and Chili's and a retail building with 14,000 square feet, will be demolished for the development, which will include retail, commercial and high-density residential space. The Reston International Center, which lies on the property, will remain.Well, this had better be good if they're razing the Chili's, that's all we can say. So what about the awesome plan to mitigate traffic problems? The proposal would put a maximum of 498 apartments, about 428,000 square feet of office space (including the existing International Center) and 145,000 square feet of retail space on the site. The development would also have more than 2,800 parking spaces.Problem s...
Reston Town Center to Reston: Drop Dead
2007-11-01 15:38:00 Buried in the news of an awesome planned event at which backers of making Reston a town handed over their 3,600-signature petition to elected officials was a bit of bad news: The Reston Town Center Association doesn't want to come out and play.In response to the letter, the Town Center Association said it would not be interested in transferring assets to a town. [Reston Citizens Association President Mike] Corrigan called the answer a “knee-jerk” reaction and disputed the necessity of having the community organizations on board.“Do they get to veto as to whether we get to vote on being a town? No,” he said.RCA also basically called the other groups chicken, saying they didn't want to support such a proposal until it looked like it might actually succeed. Maybe, but elected officials have said all along that the proposal, which would put the town status question to a referendum, assuming it's not totally illegal in the first place, needs input and support from other groups...
Reston Real Estate: The High-Low Game, pt. 2
2007-10-26 17:24:00 The bargain of the year? What the real estate listing calls "a fixer upper townhouse" in Southgate Square, which can be had for a mere $179,900. That's a damn cry cheaper than our previous High-Low champ, another foreclosed Southgate Square townhouse with a $234,000 asking price. So, it's a "handyman's special," according to the listing. How bad could it be, really? I mean, if the ladder in the picture conveys, you'll be halfway there. Right?Property has substantial mold and water damage in the basement. Cash offers only.Oh. Never mind. The "cash offers only" must be Realtor-speak for "this house is uninsurable and unmortgageable," we're guessing. Only slumlords with a positive cash flow need apply.Meanwhile, this stunner on Foxclove Road is under contract for a mere $2.1 million. But before you feel too envious, just bear in mind that even the very affluent must make sacrifices during this difficult time for home sellers: the asking price was reduced by $250,000.If you're will...
Reston Explained: Loudoun, the Other White Meat
2007-10-23 15:43:00 Occasion had it that we had to travel into the wilds of Loudoun County, to a subdivision of elegant brick townhouses surrounded by… piles of dirt.To be fair, this particular subdivision was nicer than most of the particleboard and vinyl shantytowns that pass for development in eastern Loudoun County. It even borrowed a few stray notes from the whole New Urbanism concept. The garages were relegated to outbuildings in the back, tastefully hidden from sight and leading into alleys that were actually called alleys. (How edgy! How urban!) You could conceivably walk to the massive strip mall under construction a short ways down the road, except that no businesses have opened there yet. A block in the heart of the subdivision had been left undeveloped and adorned with playground equipment, creating an effect vaguely suggestive of a New England village green. It was a beautiful sunny day, unseasonably warm, and while walking down the narrow streets to the green space, you could almost imag...
Only in Reston...
2007-10-22 16:40:00 Could someone with free time on their hands trying to improve a pedestrian crossing near Reston Town Center be the inspiration for a Pulitzer-worthy, 1,100-word story. While there won't be a shiny new traffic light, complete with state of the art anti-encroachment lasers on loan from Haliburton and a speaker blaring the Macarena for the hearing impaired at the intersection of Market Street and Town Center Parkway, a new light and crosswalk are about to go into service on Reston Parkway, linking Fake Downtown to the expensive condos directly across the way -- and sparing the residents there the approximately 2.6 minutes it takes to walk to existing traffic light-guarded crosswalks 100 yards from their homes. Which is all good, because Reston Parkway never gets congested as it is.We're all for keeping Reston a walkable community, especially given the challenges of high-density development. But we're also all for asking people to actually--what's the word?--oh, right. Walk.
California Tortilla Opens Today
2007-08-14 11:28:00 Today is the grand opening of the California Tortilla in Reston! Stop by for free burritos and a beverage for everyone who visits for lunch (11:00 am to 1:30 pm) and dinner (5-7:30). I'm heading over now in hopes of being one of the first 10 people in line. I'll write more about my adventures (or lack thereof) later today. With the recent additions of California Tortilla and Mama Lucia, which just opened a few weeks ago, Reston?s North Point Village Center is becoming the place to be (this may be a slight exaggeration).Update 11:20 am - I was #8 in line and now have 52 coupons for a free burrito, one for every week over the next year. Much more later.

Breaking News: California Tortilla Opening in Reston
2007-05-23 03:05:00 This is huge! One of my favorite restaurants, California Tortilla, is opening a franchise in Reston, Virginia. I e-mailed Pam Felix, Marketing/Queen of Burritos (that is her actual title listed on the website) to confirm that this is true, and she replied that the new location will hopefully open mid-summer. This makes me very happy. I haven?t been as excited about the opening of a business/store since Wegmans came to Northern Virginia in 2004.When a California Tortilla opens, they give away a free burrito and pop (yes, it's pop) to every customer from 11am-2pm and 5pm-8pm that day. Plus, the first ten people in line receive a free burrito every week for a year at that store, and the next 20 receive a free burrito every week for a month at that location. Depending on the opening date, I may take a day or half-day off of work to wait in line.

The other never did anything honest in his life except for one crazy minute. They both had to get out of the country." This film is told in flashback by Dan McGinty (Brian Donlevy). Quote Me Of The Day: Reagan Gomez-Preston
2007-01-11 11:35:02 Reagan's from the Parent 'Hood. Yeah, I don't care either. And who thinks of these dumbass poses for magazine spreads? Lemme sit on the coffee table, arch and spread?! Um, okay,... wtf. Anyway, this ho got married at 19, she's 26 and I like what she had to say bout washing dishes in the nude."I walk around the house naked. I don?t do it to be like, 'Honey, look at me. I?m over here.' Even if I?m not feeling sexy, when he gives me that look, I could be doing the dishes or whatever, I look down at myself like, 'You know what? I am hot!' You don?t need all that lingerie anyway; it all comes off at the end of the day."source
