2009-08-14 18:11:00 One of the things I love about being a lawyer is what I learn from clients. I recently started working with a company that makes a high end consumer good. In the US, this company sells its products to high end retail outlets, including department stores. It has no retail outlets. This company has been doing more and more of its manufacturing in China and, like so many, it has recently decided the time has come for it to sell its product line in China as well. They have told me that "in order to maintain exclusivity and to prevent piracy," it will be setting up retail stores in China and selling its product only from those stores. That way it will be obvious both to them and to consumers that any of its product that is not in these stores is not the real deal. Now I am sure this is nothing new to many of you (so go ahead and call me out if you wish), but this is actually the first time I have heard of a company going into China retail to protect product integrity. The ecommerce site currently has consumer electronics, home appliances and kitchen appliances on sale. Besides for Videocon’s own brand the other brands available on the estore is Sansui, Electrolux, Kenstar, kelvinator and Akai. Videocon targets sales of Rs.8,000 crore in the current fiscal and to achieve this target they have launched ‘Digiworld’ and have opened 16 outlets in the country so far, number of which will be increased to 100 by October, 2010. Can Someone Explain China Retail?
2009-04-26 08:59:00 I am being serious here. I just recently got back from a China trip with my eleven year old daughter. Like most 11 year old girls, she loves to shop for clothes and she really is quite knowledgeable about them. Though we went to other places as well, she did her clothes shopping in Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul, Korea. She did virtually all of her buying in Seoul. Here are my findings and questions based on what I saw of and heard from my daughter. 1. The clothes that she liked that are also available in the United States, were pretty much the same price in China as in the United States. I do not understand this. I am pretty certain retail rents are considerably higher in the Seattle (where she does most of her shopping) than in most places in Beijing and Shainghai and I am absolutely certain the wages of the salespeople are considerably higher in Seattle (where everybody makes at least $8.50 an hour) than in Beijing or Shanghai. The company announced today that it's hired David Porter, a 25-year Wal-Mart vet, as vice president of retail stores. He will head up Microsoft's "efforts to create a better PC and Microsoft retail purchase experience" through its own stores.This is a risky move. Microsoft (MSFT) will be competing with its vast retail channel, which ranges from Best Buy (BBY) to Costco (COST). And last we checked, the retail industry is in the garbage. Even Apple is suffering.If done right, Microsoft might be able to show consumers the benefits (if any) of having a Windows computer, Xbox 360, Windows Mobile phone, and Zune, all in one place. At very least, they could do a better job than Best Buy at showing off PCs. As for the album I was going into it not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. It's the first album of theirs where I enjoyed each track on the first listen. Since then Brandy parted ways with Atlantic Records and later was signed to Epic Records. First single "Right Here (Departed)" has proven to be a radio hit peaking to #25 on the Billboard Pop 100. As for the album, Brandy returns with a solid effort but falls short a little of my expectations. I'm glad to hear that she still has those amazing pipes and she carries it well throughout the album.
