Floyd Mayweather Jr. Announces Retirement From Boxing
2008-06-07 03:24:00
The following news item is from ESPN.com as written by Dan Rafael. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — After Floyd Mayweather Jr. easily outpointed Carlos Baldomir to win the welterweight championship in November 2006, he stood at the podium at the post-fight news conference and broke down in tears as he stunningly announced his retirement from boxing. Despite the emotional outpouring, few believed Mayweather was serious, rather that he had simply been overcome by the moment. As it turned out, he had been. Less than two months later, Mayweather agreed to face Oscar De La Hoya. In May 2007, Mayweather outpointed him in a fight that shattered all boxing revenue and pay-per-view records. After beating Ricky Hatton in December, plans were in motion for Mayweather-De La Hoya II to take place Sept. 20. But cross it off the schedule. Mayweather, 31, announced his retirement from boxing again on Friday in a move that appears much more serious than his impromptu declaration two years ago. The rematc...

Hold off on retirement party for John Smoltz (AP)
2008-06-05 12:11:00
Put away those rockin’ chairs. Hold off on that retirement party. John Smoltz isn’t ready to walk away from the mound just yet. Sure, the 41-year-old pitcher is headed for season-ending surgery, and there’s little precedent for someone his age to return from such a major operation. But Smoltz has defied the odds before, and ...

A Decent Paying Secure Job With Benefits, Retirement and Not Requiring Coll

One thing I’ve never understood about people with lousy paying jobs, lousy benefits, little security and no real retirement plan, is why they stay in their sucky jobs in the first place. However condescending this sounds, if these people at least have high school degrees, there is really no excuse for having these lousy jobs. ...

Today we've got a trio of pitchers who may be ready to call it quits. John Smoltz will have season-ending shoulder surgery.  Retirement is not out of the question, but right now he's got his eye on returning in '09. Jeff Zrebiec talked with Steve Trachsel in spring; he'll probably retire if the Orioles release him. Hal McCoy expects Kent Mercker to hang it up.  He's on the 60-day DL with a sore back.

Investing For Your Retirement

Pension scheme contributionsWith current tax relief, for those on a marginal tax rate of 22%, a contribution of Ł100 only costs Ł78 (and for those on 40% only Ł60) and then earns income and capital gains free of tax (except that tax deducted from dividends can no longer be recovered). So pensions are a very tax efficient investment. When a pension is drawn, it is taxed as income but in most cases some 25% of the pension fund can be withdrawn as a tax free lump sum.Contributions to the state pension schemes and occupational schemes are made from income. Personal and stakeholder pension contributions are also usually in the form of regular monthly payments but need not be.For self employed people with irregular income, contributions in the form of a lump sum once a year, when you know how much is available, might be more appropriate. Furthermore, charges tend to be lower when contributions are made that way.Individual pension accountsWith all forms of pension scheme apart from occupati...

Do-it-Yourself Retirement Plan
2008-05-28 15:12:00
For your retirement plan, do you have to rely on financial advisers? Or can you build your own retirement plan? Yes, it is possible to run your own retirement plan, and in many countries you are allowed to do so.But building a retirement plan takes time and effort ? it is no good just putting your money into one thing like a group of equities and leave them alone. You might scan the financial pages of the paper one day to find your retirement plan had lost 30-50% of its value! To build your own retirement plan, you will need to spend, say, an hour a week managing it, and more time reading. How does the Big Picture affect your retirement plan? The reason you need to keep in touch with what is happening in the investment world is that you need to see the Big Picture well to make your retirement plan work. What do I mean? You need to know:1. Whether the economy is growing or flagging or in recession.2.What is expected to happen with inflation over the next two years or so ? and keep gettin...

Planning for the future and especially for retirement can be a daunting task in and of itself. However, individuals often seek the help of investors who specialize in pension plans and knowing the law can often be a saving grace for many. That is until recently, as the rash of unethical practices of stockbrockers, investors and corporations has reached an all-time high. Personal finance is the application of the principles of finance to the monetary decisions of an individual or family unit. Quarterhorsex looking for a retirement home
2008-05-24 20:58:00
I am looking to find a retirement home for my quarterhorse cross, Bentley. He was, is and has been an awesome horse- but he was diagnosed with navicular last year and I can't ride him as much as I'd like to anymore. I tried corrective shoeing and it has not made a difference compared to when he was barefoot. He is lame on and off and would do well out on pasture as a companion horse for another lonely horse. He likes to be outside most of the time, and he doesn't need any special grains or anything, just some hay, water and a salt block- he can even go back to barefoot...talk about low maintenance eh? He is friendly and spunky and it breaks my heart to let him go. He is free to the right person. If you have a home and lots of love for him, please reply.
Retirement
2008-05-23 15:36:00
One of the Venerables in my corner of the world is retiring. The word went out; her spot of the shopping carts is up for grabs. Now, mind you, I do not have a mind to retire myself, but it did put me in the frame of mind to think about retired folks. I see them, you see them. They walk in the malls, plan their days around their meals, drive big cars, make quick stops and turns use a lot of washroom facilities, make a point to know the names of kids and grandchildren. They go out for coffee, read the obituaries, make a point to know the score last night, know which neighbor is scoring with which widow - or at least creating the illusion of scoring. They wash their cars, when they work they do so when they want to work. They go to town meetings and actually read the local weekly rag. I look over the above litany and make note that those items are NOT retirement...that "is" Real Estate Agents. I begin to wonder...who retires from Real Estate? It IS retirement. What other gai...

Wheeler set for retirement; Smith in line to lead LMS
2008-05-21 10:05:00
CONCORD, N.C. — Legendary promoter H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler is retiring as president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway, and the official announcement could come as early as Wednesday. In what may be his last race in that capacity, Wheeler will oversee the running of Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600. Wheeler held the first night race at a superspeedway in 1992, after the installation of a $1.7 million lighting system at LMS. Wheeler, 69, reportedly will be succeeded by Marcus G. Smith, 34, son of track owner and Speedway Motorsports Inc. chairman O. Bruton Smith. Marcus Smith has served as executive vice president of national sales and marketing for SMI, a publicly traded company, since 2004. Wheeler came to work at what was then named Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1975 and in 1980 was named president of the track. He also has served as chief operating officer and director of SMI since its organization in 1994. "There will never be another Hump...

Family issues have Pedro considering retirement
2008-05-20 14:24:00
Pedro Martinez may be on the fast track back into the New York Mets' starting rotation, but he is traveling that road with a heavy heart. After facing minor leaguers in game competition Monday at Tradition Field, Martinez was equal parts enthusiasm and concern in an extended interview. He was zealous about a proposed start for the club that could come before the end of the month. He was distressed about his ailing father and said a desire to be there for his family might bring him to an early retirement — possibly even after this season according to the New York Daily News. "It's taking a toll on me and my family, my dad's situation," Martinez said, referring to a form of brain cancer afflicting his 78-year-old father, Pablo. "I haven't been there for them. I just realized that between last year and this year I haven't been there for my family, my parents.  That'll probably drag me away from the game a little sooner than people expect. "After this season, I'm going...

Generating income in early retirement
2008-05-18 05:08:00
One of the two major concerns for early retirees is how to generate enough income to live on until you are eligible to receive retirement income such as social security, pension or 401(k)/IRA distributions (The other major concern is health insurance, which I will cover in a separate post). As I show in my earlier posts on our Net worth, most of our savings are in tax-deferred retirement accounts. This is intentional, since we want to contribute as much as we can to tax-deferred accounts, to take advantage of the tax deferred growth and the tax deductions where possible. But this causes a problem: if we want to retire early, say at age 50, we have to have enough money in taxable accounts to live for at least 9.5 years, until we become eligible to take distributions from 401(k) and IRA accounts at age 59 1/2.As I mentioned in an earlier post, it is possible to make early withdrawals from retirement accounts without penalty. But clearly this is something you want to avoid, unless you r...
