(Untitled) (2009): Movie review and facts about the art
2009-11-03 20:54:00 (Untitled) "When did beautiful become so fucking ugly" (Untitled) is an interesting case in that it's in many ways a poke-fun-at-weird art movie, but it's a little more insider than that, and the satire has moments where it's close enough to real life that it stings a bit. It's like somebody making fun of a friend, and it's funny at first, and then it crosses the line and you feel a little defensive. One challenge I'd like to see films like Art School Confidential and (Untitled) take on it is help people also like it, which is supposed to be the other hand of satire (technically, in satire, you...

Comic Book Review: CHEW #5 [VIDEO]
2009-11-02 05:46:00 One of my favorite indie comics is CHEW by John Layman and Rob Guillory, published by Image Comics. It tells the story of Tony Chu, a 'cibopath', a person with the power to tell everything that has happened to a living creature if he eats a part of it. The book is dark, quirky, funny and wholly original. In this episode of CCW*TV, my comic-reviewing partner Jose Melendez and I take a look at CHEW #5. We love the book, but Jose takes issue with a certain spoiler-laden image on the very cover of the book! (WARNING: Explicit language!):Have YOU read Chew? If so, what did you think?...
GWHH Review: Lupe Fiasco "Remember to Smile" show at Congress The
2009-11-01 05:10:00 The Remember to Smile show was, in a word: inspiring. Lupe Fiasco developed a series of video installments to create a storyline throughout the 2+ hour show. The installments, titled Lyric, Life, Death, (minus Love), Faith, Politics, Fame, Progress, Chicago, and Lasers, captured Lupe's life to this point in a powerful, cinematic fashion. Every video included Lupe's viewpoint on each domineering topic followed by music from his discography of mixtapes and albums to bring it to life.I can honestly say that those in attendance at the Congress Theater gained a personal picture of the person that Lupe Fiasco is just by simply analyzing the show and his conscious performance choices. The video topics were particularly evocative because the specific word...
ASUS UL20A – Best 12-inch Laptop Review!
2009-10-30 22:03:00 Well, I am going to be getting a new laptop soon because although my Eee PC 1000HE netbook is working great, I think I need a bit more CPU power and slightly bigger screen as my current netbook is great but may not work for longer travels to trips like the CES 2010 in Las Vegas where I will have to be using my new Canon 7d to upload HD videos in real-time as I interview people. The ASUS UL20A comes with an Intel SU7300 Core 2 Dual CPU, 12.1″ XGA screen, Windows 7, 250GB of harddrive space, and a whopping 7.5 hours of battery life. And all this for less than $600. You can pre-order yours here too. I think at about $600, this is probably the best 12-inch notebook you can ever compared to all those $2000 Sony VAIOs and whatnot. Well, I really been liking ASUS laptops due to its long-life battery, that is perhaps the most important for people on the go like me. Read more about ASUS UL20A Review here. P.S. I am really getting thirsty for this one for sure, I can’t WAIT!...

3G India – 5th International Conference – A First Look Review
2009-10-27 06:22:00 The 3G India International Conference kicked off with the speakers and the chairperson lighting the Diya to mark a sanctum start. The first session was based upon the road ahead for telecom landscape in India from the service providers’ point of view majorly highlighting the opportunities for 3G in India. P. Balaji, Ericsson’s Vice President for marketing and strategy in India spoke at the Conference, during which he shared some persepectives revolving around the need for 3G in India. Beginning with, the survey conducted by Ericsson in metros and Tier I and Tier II cities showed results that most of the 3G subscribers across each segment use it mainly for music and imagery. Some points that he raised - Why mobile broadband? Since a user faces problems with his/her internet connection, 2 out of 5 were interested in 3G getting rolled out, after the survey results. Mobile Broadband has a strong pull from the consumer perspective. The early adopters of 3G in India - Youth Me...

Review: 'Saw VI'
2009-10-23 10:18:00 It's pretty amazing when a terrible movie looks good (Well, not good, but better) when compared to most of the other junk in the franchise. Yet "Saw VI," still a one-star piece of stupid, gruesome junk, didn't make me as mad as the last couple "Saw" movies. Maybe because its violence isn't as relentlessly punishing. Maybe because it actually tries to move the plot along and answer some questions, no matter how ridiculous those questions and their answers may be. Or maybe by part six it's only natural to just throw up your hands and say, "OK, these movies aren't going away, if even two minutes of a sequel are tolerable that's something." Congratulations to all involved for earning the...
Robben Ford: souls on ten review
2009-10-21 19:18:00 Robben Ford - Soul On Ten by James Ulreich Recorded live with the rhythm section of Toss Panos (drums) and Travis Carlton (bass), along with guest keyboard player, Neal Evans. Once again, Robben establishes both the mood and his unmistakable sound right off the bat. Soul on Ten is an apt title, as his soul/funk/R&B/Blues influences converge to their fullest here. Concert review: Mike Doughty at Lincoln Hall
2009-10-18 15:59:00 Mike Doughty's "Question Jar Show" is a great, casual concept for a concert. The former Soul Coughing singer showcases his solo work (plus a few covers and, inevitably, his former band's "Circles") with just himself and his guitar, with an assist from Andrew "Scrap" Livingston on cello. Every few songs, one of the guys pulls questions, submitted by the audience, out of a jar and Doughty answers them, with either seriousness or snark, depending on the question. (Inquiries frequently involve requests to bring someone up on stage or amusingly absurd hypotheticals, such as who would win a fight between the mascots of Lucky Charms and Count Chocula.)The concert was a safe, sturdy pick for Friday night's musical opening of Lincoln...

Movie Review: Where The Wild Things Are
2009-10-15 09:49:00 Starring: Forest Whitaker, Catherine Keener, Steve Mouzakis, Mark Ruffalo, James Gandolfini, Paul DanoDirector: Spike JonzeRelease Date: October 16, 2009Running Time: 101 minMPAA Rating: PGDistributor: Warner Bros., Golden Village PicturesLeave it to imaginative director Spike Jonze to puncture the world of innocence created by Maurice Sednak in the classic children's short story about a boy fleeing from home to an island inhabited by a race of huge, fuzzy creatures. This alternate reality is presented in both delicate and frenzied respects, the latter which is working more distinguishable in Mr. Jonze's film adaptation. Save for a couple of magical scenes subtlety is tamed and encapsulated by the overwhelming power of Jonze's mind that twirls out of control, allowing conflictions of tone to hurl upon the live-action film and consume it for the worse. Tone isn't consistent throughout the film, a major setback for a short film (90 minutes). The connection between the first fiftee...
Rob Chappers: Chris Geden ML1 waves mini review

Richie Kotzen: london underworld review
2009-10-13 00:15:00 [Bristol Fiddlers gig] Kotzen's voice is very emotive and unlike a lot of shredders who attempt to sing (seriously what is up with that ? stick to shredding!), Kotzen's voice is amazing and is much like a softer version of Chris Cornell's. Simply put, its soulful. And he uses that to good effect. Don't get me wrong this man can still shred with the best of them doing a lot of hammer on and pull... This is a content summary only. Concert review: Portugal. The Man, Hockey
2009-10-11 09:22:00 Based on the strength of their debut, "Mind Chaos," Hockey is easily one of the year's best new bands. So after the Portland group's set was completely ruined by sound problems at Lollapalooza (where the band's helpless attitude only made matters worse), I was eager to see them again in a place with more reliable equipment.Yet here I am again, burned by a live performance by a band I love on disc. What's your problem, Hockey? According to singer Benjamin Grubin at Saturday night's sold out show at Schubas (headlined by Portugal. The Man, pictured), the problem is that this time Grubin is sick. OK, fine. Did Michael Jordan phone it in when he was sick? Never. Does Bono mumble...

I really did not enjoy Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell. And there are very few exceptions to this rule for me (see: Dead Snow). But director Ruben Fleischer could really change my mind, in a big way. His feature-length directorial debut, Zombieland, is hilarious, and breathes new life into the zombie genre just when it needed the most (the vampires have been leading the game for years now). The premise is like most zombie films: most of the world dies, survivors deal with zombies. The film is narrated by Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg). He's an introverted gamer with irritable bowel syndrome who chooses to spend his weekends at home playing World of War Craft and drinking Code Red Mountain Dew. His social dysfunctions and phobias actually prepared ...

We Review HANK, THE MIDDLE, MODERN FAMILY, COUGAR TOWN & EASTWICK
2009-09-23 20:30:00 By: Aleks Chan You’re probably going to hear a lot about how this fall is the year of the comedy: of all the fall pilots, comedies are heading the pack in terms of buzz and praise. And ABC, who’s been a stranger to a hit sitcom for quite awhile now, is betting on a full-on Wednesday night blitzkrieg, scheduling five new shows back to back without any ratings support from an established hit. It’s the kind of high risk, big rewards gambling that seems so relevant given the…state of broadcast sitcoms. Too bad the Alphabet Network’s opening salvo threatens to ruin the whole thing: HANK (debuting next Wednesday September 30 at 8PM), where Kelsey Grammer plays his umpteenth iteration of a blow-hard, seems so out of touch (with the national sentiment, what’s funny, what’s stupid, you name it), you’d be tempted to give up with it and just call the whole thing off. The premise – Grammer’s title character moves his family back to Virginia after he’s booted from hi...

2009 International Autojumble Review
2009-09-23 18:48:00 Warm sunshine all weekend, for this year?s International Autojumble, sponsored by Classics Monthly and held in the grounds of the National Motor Museum on the 12th & 13th September, gave the event a real holiday atmosphere. The biggest problem was persuading people to leave at the end of the show! The popularity of the Autojumble, the largest in Europe, shows no sign of waning and demand for stand spaces increased again this year, resulting in a best ever number of 2,102 stands and 278 cars for sale in the Automart and Dealermart. There were also a record number of overseas exhibitors, coming from as far afield as Eastern Europe, Australia, Japan and North America. Advance tickets sales were also up this year and large numbers of jumblers were eagerly waiting on both days for the doors to open. Saturday was exceptionally busy, Sunday a little less so and total show numbers were 38,500. This was 2,000 up on 2008 and matched the 2006 show numbers, the best since 1992. Large ...
Album Review: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band ? Speed of Life
2009-09-23 16:12:00 It’s been five years since the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released an album. Listening to Speed of Life, ...
Book Review: The Essential Guide To Breastfeeding By Marianne Neifert, M.D.
2009-09-23 14:08:00 By Amie Breeze Harper Having given birth to my first child this past spring and nourishing my son solely through breast milk his first 5.5 months, I was very pleased with Dr. Marianne Neifert's new book, The Essential Guide to Breastfeeding: Everything a Nursing Mother Needs to Know (Sterling 2009). First, the book is structured in a way that is very easy to read. I was able to find the answers I needed, immediately. For example, the use of bold font styles to make important concepts stay in my mind, and the use of big blue lettering for sub-sections allowed me to navigate the book well. The first chapter of the book lets the audience know why and how breastfeeding is "nature's perfect food for babies." Dr. Neifert breaks down the components in human milk (protein, fat, carbohydrates) and explains why it is far better than formula. Understanding that breastfeeding is still socially unacceptable in most parts of the U.S.A. (although it is medically proven to be optim...

Big Ten First Quarter Review: Four Big Ten Coaches On The Hot Seat
2009-09-23 03:12:00 Big Ten conference play will kick off on Saturday. For many teams the start of conference play offers an opportunity to start anew after a hiccup or two in non-conference action. For others, the start of conference play has much more serious connotations. For some coaches, the way their team performs this season in Big Ten play will go a long way to determining how secure their job will be once the season comes to an end. For some coaches, another poor showing in a wide open Big Ten title race will only solidify the opinion of those who doubt and strengthen a case for dismissal. These are the coaches who find themselves on the hot seat heading into the...
Book Review: Speech-less: Tales Of A White House Survivor By Matt Latimer
2009-09-23 02:37:00 By Loyd Eskildson Finding himself with a law degree and lured by the upbeat themes of the Reagan revolution, Matt heads to Washington, D.C. and snares a series of jobs with powerful figures on Capitol Hill, beginning as an assistant for Senator Spencer Abraham (R, MI) for $25,000 in 1996. Two moves later Matt was with Senator Kyl (R, AZ), and then off to Secretary Rumsfeld's office as a speech writer. En route, Matt drops dirt on several prominent senators (Abraham, E. Dole, McCain) for various reasons - detached/MIA, dumb, terrifying temper, and briefly comments on Ann Coulter (likes). Latimer was surprised to find Rumsfeld's hands tied on hiring decisions involving relatively low-level and reportedly less than stellar performers - the White House (Karl Rove) apparently had a long reach. Latimer was frustrated for a time by their Machiavellian machinations blocking him from meeting regularly with Sec. Rumsfeld. Latimer reports that he could have stayed with incoming Se...

Book Review: Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey Of Pat Tillman By Jon Krakaue
2009-09-22 13:30:00 By James Holland Ever since the time I attended a Harvard Square bookstore reading by Jon Krakauer and watched the slide show of his climb up Mt. Everest that he so beautifully described in his book Into Thin Air, I’ve been a big fan of Krakauer. However, I think he lost his way on this project. His own political views seem to have blinded him to fully understanding the motivations and views of his book subject Pat Tillman. Or perhaps the author thought that his book subject was “Illegal Wars Begun by George Bush” and Pat Tillman was just a convenient vehicle to provide a taxi tour of that theory. That is kind of the feeling the reader is left with as he finds himself skimming page after page of not-very-interesting background material that does little to advance the book’s story line. Unlike Krakauer climbing the heights of Everest one plodding step in the deep snow at a time, much of this volume doesn’t seem completely on target. Krakauer is a...

Yuri Anime: Saki, Mid-season review
2009-09-21 23:22:00 Saki, we need to talk. It's nothing bad, really, it's just ... I'll be honest. I wasn't sure that we'd get along at first. You seemed to be too fake-cutesy, with those ridiculous ever-blushing cheeks, but always flashing your legs at me. It was a creepy mixed signal thing that got on my nerves. And Nodoka, always bouncing her big chest like that....I thought, can you both really be so innocent as you're gazing into each other's eyes longingly? But fine, I set that aside. Then you really started taking off. You let your innate abilities show, like you were finally free to be yourself. Sure, I noticed a few things, like the way you suddenly throw your ass into my face, dress up to please the guys in bathing suits, yukata and maid costumes all while you're looking at Nodoka so intensely. It kind of freaks me out. Like, pick one, okay? Can you not be the G-rated version of Girls Gone Wild? But I know that's not really your fault. You just want to get ahead in the world and t...

Common and The Roots live in Chicago review from our contest winner
2009-09-21 21:34:00 On September 12th, Common and The Roots (joined also by Heavy D, Colin Munroe, and Jeremih) performed as part of the Hennessy Artistry tour at The Shrine in Chicago. Our contest winner, Christopher Catania, wrote in depth about his live experience for his Live Fix blog. Above is the 3+ minute freestyle from Common, which Christopher writes about below (I love the jazz comparison). Then came a freestyle. Common amped the crowd's intensity even more. Watching Common's freestyle reminded me of how a jazz player would prep on the fly before jumping into an improvised solo. In the video below, I love how Common simultaneously -;maintained the crowd's intensity, by covering the citywide compass with shout-outs to all the Chi-town "hoods," and readied himself for a forthcoming lights out freestyle....
Album Review: Guy Clark – Somedays the Song Writes You
2009-09-21 21:08:00 Guy Clark is one of the premier songwriters of his generation–even that might be an understatement. Unlike his friend, the late, great Townes Van Zandt, Clark’s songs have always been readily accessible, yet still manage to contain layers of depth. He likes to talk about the holes he leaves in his guitar playing, but it’s also the holes he leaves in his songs that allow the listener to insert themselves and connect with the message without feeling like nothing more than an observant bystander. At the same time, it’s never been Clark’s voice that has provided an overwhelmingly compelling reason to listen to his work, although he is able to connect with his songs and deliver them in a way that few others have been able to duplicate. But his voice has noticeably diminished since the outstanding Workbench Songs was released back in 2006.
