Prata Man on Capstan Way, Richmond
2012-02-01 16:00:00
When we visited Pho Han, we put a long forgotten hole in the wall restaurant, Prata-Man back in the our places to visit. We had visited it when we were new to the city. That was more than 10 years ago. We over heard the server telling a customer at the table next to us that Prata-Man has been in business for more than 20 years.
Hong Mi Korean Restaurant on No. 3 Road, Richmond
2012-01-26 16:00:00
Polly and I chanced upon this new Korean Restaurant Hong Mi on our usual meeting. We were looking for a place for lamb hotpot since the weather is cold now and we just drove out from Lido as we were told that they dont serve lamb hotpot during lunch hour. As we pulled out from the mall where Lido is and wanted to go to Aberdeen Mall, we saw that a new Korean restaurant has taken over Kim Ga Nae (also a Korean restaurant) used to be. So, we decided to check it out.

Pho Han on Capstan Way, Richmond
2012-01-06 16:00:00
Pho Han was opened in the summer of 2011, i.e. it had opened for 6 months already. I had noticed of a new Vietnamese restaurant sign on my way to Costco Richmond via Garden City Road many times but I just cant see the restaurant. Apparently, Pho Han is located on Capstan, just around the corner of  the strip mall where Manzo and Prata Man is. It is obscured from view if you travel along Garden City Road.
Christmas Luncheon at Starry Night behind Costco in Richmond
2012-01-04 16:00:00
Emily S invited me and Lorna to a Christmas luncheon of a non-profit organization that she joined. The luncheon includes a talk on western dining etiquette and lucky draw. We came with the impression of paying the meal on our own but at the end, Emily S paid for us. Emily, thank you for Christmas luncheon and the talk on the dining etiquette was very informative.
The Coffee Well at Westminster Hwy and Tiffany Blvd, Richmond
2012-01-02 16:00:00
Polly and I went to The Coffee Well for our cake meet. We had been to this location when it was Nat's Bistro & Convenience Store back in October 2008. This is a very quiet strip mall. The Coffee Well belongs to The Suburban Well as the receipt is by the name The Suburban Well.
Rhino?s Kitchen at Lansdowne Mall, Richmond
2011-12-26 16:00:00
Nanzaro told me that there is a new Hong Kong style restaurant in Lansdowne Mall. He saw that in a flyer while I'm not around town. But he cannot remember the name of the restaurant. I could not search any information about the restaurant since I do not know the name. However, Nanzaro said it's part of the Top Gun group. So, I checked the Top Gun group website and still there is no information of any Hong Kong style restaurant. My guess is that the new restaurant must be at the old California Cafe location.
Richmond Community Kitchens Christmas Potluck 2011
2011-12-23 16:00:00
The Richmond Community Kitchens celebrated Christmas with a potluck at Gilmore Park Church. We are very grateful for the church to allow us to use their facility for this potluck. Old, new and existing members and friends attended this potluck. Some of the members also brought along their kids since the kids are off on winter break.
Pho Ten in Sand?s Plaza, No 5 Road, Richmond
2011-12-09 16:00:00
A reader alerted us that there is a new Vietnamese restaurant in Ironwood. That is a good addition as there is no Vietnamese in this part of Richmond. Pho Ten Restaurant is located at the new Sand's Plaza on No. 5 Road. It is across the No. 5 Road from the Ironwood Library.
Dragon View Chinese Cuisine in Continental Plaza, Richmond
2011-12-01 16:00:00

Nando?s in Coppersmith, Richmond
2011-11-24 16:00:00
Nanzaro and I had lunch at Nando's on a Sunday afternoon. Arkensen was doing his homework and he asked for take out for his lunch. The Nando's that we visited is the one in Coppersmith, where Canadian Tire is. There are plenty of parking here.
Cattle Hot Pot Restaurant in Alexandra Road, Richmond
2011-11-20 16:00:00
It's another weekend dining out with my kids alone. This time, Arkensen refused to come out with us. So, it's just Nanzaro and me.
Murchie?s Tea & Coffee in Richmond Automall
2011-11-14 16:00:00
Polly brought me to Murchie's Tea & Coffee in the Richmond Automall for our ladies' meet. I have no idea that such a place exist as I only go to the ring road in the automall. Murchies' Tea & Coffee is located in the Crestwood Commerce Center across the Lexus dealership. It is next to the Boston Pizza.
Pho Boi, A Taste of Vietnam on No.5 Road in Richmond
2011-11-11 16:00:00
I decided to visit the newest Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond for lunch on a Saturday. Most importantly, the boys agreed to the idea. I am still in the search of dry mix Vietnamese noodle with lots of fried shallot and brown sauce. The latest addition to the many Vietnamese restaurants in Richmond is Pho Bou, A Taste of Vietname on No. 5 Road which took over the location of Red Mirchi recently. As you can see this restaurant is big.
Aberdeen Food Court in Richmond
2011-11-09 16:00:00
Finally, Lorna, Emily, Marian and me were able to meet up to celebrate the September girl's birthday. We met up at Aberdeen Food Court since the birthday girl has not been to Aberdeen Food Court before and had expressed her wish to go there. Emily also brought a friend to join us.
Hollywood Steak House on Leslie Road, revisited
2011-11-07 16:00:00
It's always a nightmare to find a parking spot in any eatery in Richmond during the weekend. I was rounding from one restaurant to another and finally found a parking spot at Hollywood Steak House. We had blogged about Hollywood Steak House in 2007. It's time for a revisit.
Danny?s Market, corner of Garden City & Francis, Richmond
2011-10-28 16:00:00
It was a gloomy and showery fall Saturday. The boys do not want to go out to eat. Moreover, there is a hockey game at 1:00PM.
Flo Tea Room in Richmond
2011-10-18 16:00:00
When Marian, Emily, Lorna and me had a meet up at the Yuemicka Noodle House which ended up to celebrate Marian's birthday, we vouched to get together again for the next birthday among us. September is Emily's birthday. I tried to organize a lunch since mid September but we just cant have a date that suit all. After several dates being postponed, Marian finally suggested that we get together first without the birthday girl and organized another meet up for Emily's birthday. So, Marian, Lorna and me met up at Flo Tea Room in Richmond.
Pho 78 Vietnamese Restaurant on No. 3 Road, Richmond
2011-10-14 16:00:00
I was craving for Vietnamese dry mix noodles with lots of shallots and sweetish soy sauce. So, I got the boys to agree to go to Pho Lan for lunch. However, I'm not sure if Pho Lan has that dish or not. Anyone has suggestion of where can I this the dish? Anyway, when we arrived at Pho Lan's parking lot, it's full. So, we tried to park at the Richmond Center parking lot and walk over. Just becareful not to be caught doing that. Unfortunately, the parking lot is full too despite it's size. So, I have no choice to find another Vietnamese restaurant.
Jereme Richmond at Peace with Illini Experience at NBA Draft Combine
2011-06-23 19:26:00
Jereme Richmond, the first McDonald's All-American to sign with the Fighting Illini since Dee Brown in 2002, did not have a storybook college basketball career. He's now one-and-done, but it's not the kind of typical one-and-done you may be used to. Given all that's happened to Richmond in Champaign it may surprise you to learn that his relationship with Illinois coach Bruce Weber is actually warm and fuzzy. Bruce Weber visited Richmond at the NBA combine, and the two smiled at each other. Then they shared a big hug. "He takes his job very seriously, but he takes being a great person even more seriously," Richmond said. "Coach Weber and I are going to be friends for a long...

Jereme Richmond Doesn't Play; Illini Lose at Wisconsin
2011-01-15 22:55:00
Despite the presence of two nationally ranked teams, exciting and entertaining college basketball this was not. The game being played in this Big Ten basketball contest was like the slush, snow, ice and stagnant dirty water outside the Kohl Center- slow, hard to navigate, sludge and drudgery. For the Illini at least, there was never any flow. As unexciting as the first meeting (won by Illinois 69-61) was, this was even more wallowed in mire. The #20 Badgers got revenge on the #16 Illini from their first encounter 76-66, despite shooting just 1-12 from behind the arc in the first half. Yet Bo Ryan's team still led by 2 at the break. This was a continuation of the first meeting;...
Pho Cao Van: Nothing Remarkable
2011-01-14 09:01:00
It was Arkensen and Nanzaro?s turn to decide where we are going to eat out. It was no surprise to us what they want. Their criteria is simple and they don?t care where we go to. It has to be: No driving over bridges Sushi or pho or salted fish fried rice Sushi is out because Suanne doesn?t like it. She will come along but she will order Udon which she does not like. I suggested to the boys that we go to Pho Cao Van since it was fresh on my mind. They were happy to say the least because it is just 5 minutes from home. I had almost forgotten about this restaurant until Crispy mentioned it in one of the comments. I had always considered Pho Cao Van to be unremarkable. It had always been there for as long as I remember. Despite all the restaurants around in Richmond, they had managed to continue to operate. Pho Cao Van is located in a quiet section in the middle of Richmond. It is on Saba Road and right behind the Richmond Public Market. There are hardly any traffic there. It is...
Mizzou 75, Illinois 64: Ask and ye shall receive Jereme Richmond

Before the loss to Mizzou on Wednesday, Illini fans were asking a lot of questions about potential lineup changes. More specifically, they asked this: Is freshman Jereme Richmond going to start?

Admiralty Center Food Court on McKim Way, Richmond
2010-10-27 15:39:00
Here is continuing on the series of Asian food courts in Richmond. If you remember this post when I said I was beginning to look at Richmond's Food Courts in a different light, I listed eight food courts and so far done five of them. I had written at some point Aberdeen Center and the Richmond Public Market but to this series it doesn't count as our visit was so long ago. So three more to go! Parker Place (link and link) Empire Center (link) Yaohan Center (link) President Plaza (link) Pacific Plaza (link) Admiralty Center Aberdeen Center Richmond Public Market I guess a lot of people does not know this small little business center tucked in McKim Way, let alone know that this building is called the Admiralty Center. Not many people know too that this building has a respectable food court in it too. Parking is available by the right side of the building. It is not apparent to many people but there is a small entrance that leads to a double storey car park. We just dis...
Bistro The Home on Alexandra Road, Richmond
2010-10-25 09:01:00
I normally would blog this in sequence but this post could be time sensitive. So, I thought I better post this two days after our visit so that more of you could take advantage of the great offer this restaurant has in store. They currently have a 2-for-1 promotion that pretty much makes them the cheapest noodles in the city. And they are a bit of an upscale place too. Bistro The Home is the newest restaurants in Richmond. As a matter of fact, they had been opened just one week. Before I went, I thought that this would be another Chinese restaurant. I actually was half hoping that they would serve HOME STYLE Chinese food. But they are not Chinese.
Richmond Candidates Myrna Lopez and Maria Viramontes Running for City Counc
2010-10-23 00:41:00
Richmond candidates Myrna Lopez and Maria Viramontes are making news in their races for City Council. Their top priorities are creating jobs in Richmond to get residents back to work, and improving public safety.Richmond has been learning more about Lopez and Viramontes in recent days as they have been getting the word out.According to a mail piece advocating on behalf of Myrna Lopez:Fighting to Bring 1,200 New Jobs to Richmond: Myrna Lopez knows creating good-paying jobs in Richmond begins with working with Richmond?s biggest employers ? not driving them away. As a member of the City Council, Myrna Lopez drove a tough bargain with Chevron for an agreement that would have created 1,200 new jobs and reduced pollution by upgrading older equipment at the refinery.According to the piece about Maria Viramontes:Creating a Brighter Future for Richmond Tomorrow: Nine years ago, Maria took civic involvement to a new level, running and winning a seat on the Richmond City Council. In those n...
Yaohan Center Food Court ? Go After 6PM
2010-10-21 15:30:00
A long long time ago, we used to go to Yaohan ... a lot. Those were the days when we did not have a job and when we decide to dine out, it is to this food court. It was the cheapest and the mostest food that we could get. Yeah, those were the days way before chowtimes when food was not central in our lives -- getting our money go a longer way was. At some point we stopped going to Yaohan. The reason was parking. It is always full, especially around meal times. Getting a spot is close to impossible because there are a few cars idling on each parking lane waiting for someone to vacate a spot. It was THAT bad ... and it still is. So we often just go a couple of rounds around the car park and if we don't find a spot, we give up. Sometimes I will drive over to President Plaza next door and park in the multi-level parking. But whatever you do, do NOT try to park in the parking lots in front of Rainflower or Canadian Tire. They are very efficient in towing away cars. Be warned! The n...
Buying a home? Author Peter Richmond is the 'Complete Idiot's Guide'
2010-04-06 13:27:00
By BOB ANDELMANReal estate fortunes have been won and lost at record speed in recent years with millions of families ?under water? in their current homes, losing their homes to foreclosure and just plain befuddled by what was once the safest of investments.Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial transactions that most people will ever make. First-time homebuyers in particular have no idea where to start. What they need is a road map and an experienced guide that can advise when to shop and when to not, what?s a gem and what?s a scam.Peter Richmond is probably that guy. He?s the author of The Complete Idiot?s Guide to Buying a Home. If anyone can offer good, simple advice on how to do it, it?s got to be him.Peter Richmond websitePETER RICHMOND AUDIO EXCERPT: "A pre-approval means you actually made a formal application for the loan. It's been under-written and you do have a loan. If you're in a competitive seller's market, having a pre-approval is absolutely ...

KLM buyers receive double tax credit at Sunset Ridge Estates in Richmond
2010-02-22 22:41:00
New homebuyers looking to cash in on a deal that's twice as nice had best hurry to Sunset Ridge Estates in Richmond before the bargain of a lifetime expires. For a limited time, KLM Builders will match Uncle Sam's current special tax credits for homebuyers. That means that first-time buyers can now get $16,000 ($8,000 from the government plus $8,000 from the builder), and repeat home purchasers can receive $13,000 ($6,500 plus $6,500). KLM Builders' matching discount of $8,000 or $6,500 will be applied toward the purchase price, while the government's tax credit can be claimed on your federal income tax return. "This is an amazing opportunity to save big money, but shoppers need to move quickly to take...
Chef Hung Taiwainese Beef Noodle in Aberdeen Centre, Richmond
2009-12-20 18:56:00
*** BREAKING NEWS *** I had talked about Ramen purists and how they defended venerable bowl of Japanese pork noodle soup. I tried to garner support from a tiny band of Pho purists to defend with equal gusto the traditional Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I saw a glimmer of hope for the Malaysian Curry Laksa in the effort to be recognized in the company of the big boys in Asian noodle soups. I am still learning about the promise of the Korean Beef Bone noodle soup and their own proud uniqueness. It is time now for the Taiwanese Beef Noodle purists not to be out done ... to stand up and be counted! And man was I surprised by the turn out.
The Return of the ?Best Chinese Food Outside of China? ? Zen Fine Chinese C
2009-12-20 08:48:00
After the Belgian Waffle breakfast at Damien's, Suanne and I decided to take a walk around the Steveston Village. And we stumbled upon a soon to be opened restaurant that will definitely be the talk of town in the next few week! Steveston Village had changed a lot the past few years. There had been quite a bit of development. I like what I see because the Richmond City had managed to plan all the new development really well without altering the charm of the area. As we walked past this new apartment / retail building I caught from the distance the words "Zen Fine Chinese Cuisine". I was totally excited and was hoping that it is THE Zen Fine Chinese Cuisine that became an overnight success.
Damien?s Real Belgian Waffles in Steveston Village, Richmond
2009-12-20 00:00:00
Just last week, I blogged about our breakfast at the Cafe Medina. One of the more popular items at Cafe Medina is their Belgian waffles which is not surprising given that it is a Belgian owned restaurant. In that blog post, Jonnek responded in a comment informing us that there is a Belgian waffle place in Steveston. That reminded us of the post we read just weeks ago from Yum-O-Rama of that same place. What we learned about this unassuming place was surprising. Read on ... It is called Damien's Real Belgian Waffles. It is located in the picturesque Steveston Village in Richmond. More precisely, it is on Chatham and No 1 Road, just slightly to the west of No 1 Road. The sign outside is so small that you can't pick up the name Damien written on the logo of a boy holding a waffle. We learned later that the name and the logo does not matter as much. It is the words "Real Belgian Waffle" is more important.
Kari House Restaurant on Bayview St., Richmond

When Polly and I took a walk at the Steveston Harbour after dining at the Steveston Cannery Cafe, we walked pass this Kari House Restaurant by the water on Bayview & No. 1 Road in Steveston Village. Polly had eaten at this Malaysian restaurant before and she enjoyed the view from the restaurant. I have never dine here before.
The Paradoxical Scott Richmond

Chevron Richmond issue: new video shows job loss impact
2009-07-27 20:54:00
More at Zennie62.com | Follow me on Twitter! | Get my widget! | Visit YouTube | Visit UShow.com Apparently someone was paying attention to my call for videos from last week's Richmond City Council meeting where I reported that California Attorney General Jerry Brown visited a packed council hearing room and got passed a resolution to allow him to get involved in the issue of the stopped Chevron plant construction order. A number of comments on my blogs pointed to video links but then out-of-the-blue, Chevron itself stepped forward with their video, and it's a good one: The video shows the workers impacted telling their stories in much the same way that laid off plant construction electrician Dennis Roos told his story to me. The video was apparently created last Tuesday, at the Richmond City Council hearing. One worker in the video said "I've got a family. I've got four girls. I've got a house payment. A car payment. I was really dependent on this job." In the ...

Scott Richmond was Awesome Last Night
2009-06-18 19:06:00
What a great start by Richmond last night! I’ve been hard on the kid so far but he was dynamite last night. I went up and down his Pitch F/X data from last night and recent starts and outside of the curve weren’t any tangible differences with his other offerings (velocity and movement wise, although he’s toned down his change). Here are some Pitch F/X vertical charts lifted from Brooks Baseball. Below 0 represents sink, drop, etc. I’m using these charts because sometimes the Pitch F/X data incorrectly lists curveballs as sliders. What we’re after is looking at pitches that are below 0 on the vertical chart. These usually represent his curve. 6/6 Start 6/12 Relief (fill in for Doc) 6/17 Start (11 K Performance) As we can see he rarely cracked out his curve in the 6/6 and 6/12 games. Last night his curve was filthy. I’ll report back after his next start to see if he maintains a higher curveball percentage. Umm I don’t know how to put this w...

Luck catches up with Scott Richmond

I don’t want to be that guy but since I took some shit in the comments section for sharing my thoughts on Richmond earlier in the year (Everyone needs to stop over-rating Scott Richmond) I’ll make this post. Scott has quickly added a few runs to his ERA, seeing it shoot up to 4.28 (along with ...
Why I don?t think Scott Richmond?s success will continue
2009-05-05 19:48:00
Why I don’t think Scott Richmond’s success will continue Starting off with a sidebar I’m not sure how far back everyone’s baseball memory goes. One of the greatest single-season pitching performances in my baseball lifespan was Greg Maddux’s strike-shortened 1994 season. That season he went 16 - 6 with a 1.56 ERA in a huge hitters season. ...

Everyone needs to stop over-rating Scott Richmond
2009-03-11 17:16:00
Stop over-rating Scott Richmond The de-facto “ace”, much was read into Richmond riding the pine during the 2009 WBC. Sure, the Canadian staff was weak at best. I’ll give you that. However, let’s face facts. Richmond is at best a long relief pitcher at the MLB level. Let’s look at a collection of Richmond’s numbers throughout his career. Northern ...

I don’t know about you.  For me, I always expect to see Bubble Tea, Spicy Beef Noodles … and innards that they serve as appetizers in Taiwanese restaurants.  I don’t think I had ever been to one Taiwanese restaurant where they do not have at least one of these on their menu. Jesse recommended that we ...
