Braden Looper, Rick Ankiel lead St. Louis Cardinals past Washington Nationa
2008-04-05 07:35:00 A patchwork rotation was supposed to be the St. Louis Cardinals’ weakness. Instead, no-name starters have worked four straight stingy starts while stand-in ace Adam Wainwright has yet to pitch in a game that counted. Braden Looper pitched six sharp innings and Rick Ankiel’s two-run home run provided a first-inning cushion in a 5-4 victory ...

Rick Ankiel has 3 hits, big defensive play in Cardinals? 8-3 win over Rocki
2008-04-03 06:35:00 New St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Rick Ankiel had a game that would have made Jim Edmonds proud. Ankiel, the former wild left-hander who resurrected his career as a power-hitting outfielder last year and now is Edmonds’ replacement, homered, singled twice and made a diving catch in an 8-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on ...

Rick Ankiel Slams 2 Homers
2008-03-15 15:35:00 It's a popular question being asked these days, where should you select Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel, and what can we expect from him. The pitcher-turned-hitter enjoyed a sensational start to his new career last season, slamming 11 homeruns in 172 at bats with 39 RBIs. In 150 games, those numbers equal 35 homeruns, and 124 RBIs. The dilemma for Ankiel is that while his average was a solid .285,...

The "Mad Genius" Is at it Again
2007-09-25 05:17:00 I'm going to be very blunt about this: Tony La Russa's new strategy of batting the pitcher in the eighth spot has got to be one of the dumbest, pseudo-intelligent, wanna-be innovative ideas I have ever seen. As I understand it, La Russa thinks it creates more scoring opportunities for the guys at the top of the lineup. The pitcher has to bat somewhere, though, and now there are just fewer scoring opportunities for the guy now batting ninth, as well as more plate appearances for the worst hitter on the team. You can stretch your brain any which way trying to come up with convoluted justifications for this move, but ultimately, it can't possibly help. Rick Hummel is willing to give ol' Tony the benefit of the doubt, however, proclaiming that La Russa's new maneuver is "a hit." It's not, and I'm here to tell you why.But this year, after some initial national (and some local) snickering that La Russa was "overmanaging," the method seems to have gained at least tacit acceptance. Is Rick Ankiel For Real?
2007-09-07 16:30:00 In what started out as another feel good story in MLB this season with Rick Ankiel returning to the big leagues, it could all go for naught as a New York Daily News report says that Ankiel received HGH from an internet pharmacy. According to the report, Ankiel received a 12-month’s supply of HGH in 2004. ...

Fantasy Baseball - Rick Ankiel, Danys Baez, Alfonso Soriano
2007-09-07 16:18:00 The big MLB news yesterday was not Cardinals' OF Rick Ankiel's 2HR/7 RBI day, which brought took his 81 AB major league totals to 9 HRs and 29 RBI, but the revelation by the Daily News of New York that he was a mail-order HGH purchaser for the 2004 calendar year. After weeks of adulation from all corners, I wonder how those sportswriters, specifically Peter Gammons of ESPN who wrote ,"Every time I look at Rick Ankiel, I think he is a better man than me," will treat this latest information. Will they soothe their cognitve dissonace by excusing Ankiel's actions or will they say, "Oops. I may have been more hyperbolic than Chicken Little on the day the sky didn't fall." Brought into a 6-6 game to pitch the ninth inning, Orioles closer Danys Baez allowed a run to bring his 2007 W-L record to an ugly 0-6. I cannot help thinking that he'd be out of the 9th inning role already if the Orioles had another viable option. The recently-recalled Fernando Cabrer...

Rick Ankiel Was Given HGH [David Stefanini]
2007-09-07 15:38:00 Rick Ankiel, who has been the feel good, comeback story of the past month or so, has now been linked to HGH. However, as of right now, it does not look like Ankiel did anything wrong. He was prescribed HGH by a Florida physician in 2004. HGH was not officially banned from MLB until 2005. Here is ESPN with more: The New York Daily News reported Friday that Ankiel received a 12-month supply of human growth hormone in 2004 from a Florida pharmacy that was part of a national illegal prescription drug-distribution operation, citing records its reporters saw. That Orlando outfit, Signature Pharmacy, has been implicated in a steroids investigation run by Albany County (N.Y.) District Attorney P. David Soares, which has resulted in 22 indictments and several Florida clinic raids. Ankiel's HGH prescriptions, including Saizen and Genotropin, were signed by Florida physician William Gogan, who provided them through a Palm Beach Gardens clinic called The Health and Rejuvenation Center, or THAR...

2007-09-07 15:08:00 If this is true, it?s a monumental shame. Rick Ankiel and a Fun Little 'What If?'
2007-09-04 17:41:00 I keep having this thought. In my imagination, the St. Louis Cardinals have overtaken the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs to win the NL Central. They are in the playoffs, but it doesn't matter in what round or who against. St. Louis gets immersed in a long extra-inning game, you know, the kind

Thoughts On Rick Ankiel
2007-08-12 05:29:00 Rick Ankiel. You may have heard of him. The pitcher-turned-outfielder is now 5 for 12 with three home runs in 2007. This comes after he hit .267/.314/.568 with 32 HR in 389 Triple A at-bats. What's the fantasy outlook? "); // --> Ankiel's 32 HRs was tops in the Pacific Coast League. However, we should not take the prodigious power display as a clear sign of future big league success. Perusing the PCL HR leaderboard, we find names like Valentino Pascucci, Craig Brazell, Scott Seabol, and Scott McClain. Last year it was Jon Knott, Jack Cust, McClain again, Michael Restovich, and Scott Hairston. However, Ankiel has something going for him that none of the others listed above can claim. For Ankiel, his power display came during his first attempt at the Triple A level. Plus, he only had 136 ABs at Double A and those came in 2005. He missed all of 2006 with a knee injury. Ankiel's power display is impressive in a rooki...

The Hero File: The Return of Rick Ankiel...
2007-08-10 17:37:00 (* - photo from the AP)If you all have read my blog enough, I sometimes tend to very snarky and critical of athletes and celebrities. Heck, I even took Tony LaRussa to task in Spring Training over his drunken driving incident. But rarely, do I ever stand up and applaud an athlete.Today, I will and so proudly.Rick Ankiel made a dramatic return to the major leagues after nearly leaving the game due to his troubles on the mound. After a three year absence, he's back -- this time as a reserve outfielder.I remember very well his struggles in the playoffs of a few years ago against the Atlants Braves, and then he coming back the following season -- struggling and forgetiing how to throw a baseball. In a scene of out a movie, he hit three-run homer in his first game back in the major leagues, helping Joel Pineiro and the Cardinals to a 5-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Thursday night at Busch Stadium. I saw the replay on Sportscenter -- one powerful moment. In a summer of scandals, do...

Rick Ankiel Returns to the St. Louis Cardinals
2007-08-09 20:53:00 Rick Ankiel has been called up as a power hitter to join the St. Louis Cardinals from their AAA affiliate Memphis Redbirds. Considered one of baseball’s most promising young pitchers before uncontrollable wildness that emerged in a 2000 playoff game derailed his career, Ankiel last appeared in the major leagues in 2004. Ankiel was hitting .267 with ...
The Power of Rick Ankiel
2007-06-18 08:45:00 Rick Ankiel continues to get closer and closer to that day when his phone will ring with a call from the big leagues. On Saturday night Ankiel clubbed three home runs for AAA Memphis, tying him for second in the minor leagues with 19. Ankiel would be wise to work on his .309 OBP, but he will be wearing Cardinals red sooner rather than later. On a completely unrelated note, I recommend checking out this little Jose Mesa tidbit from the Salt Lake Tribune. They've done some research, and it appears that Mesa either lied about his age, or he was the most virile 8 year-old boy in the history of mankind.
