CTA rider: Tucker Max ads appalling
2009-09-17 20:09:00 ***Update: The CTA said today it is removing two of the three Tucker Max ads on the CTA buses. CTA spokeswoman Noelle Gaffney said the CTA outsources the sale of ads and has a company notify them if the ads don't meet guidelines set by the transit board. Gaffney said the CTA wasn't notified that the ads didn't meet the guidelines. "We wouldn't have approved them based on the guidelines," Gaffney said. The CTA is removing the ads from 250 buses, Gaffney said. Leah Pine wrote to "Going Public" about an ad for "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell," a Tucker Max movie. Pine said she saw the ad on the side of a No. 29 State bus...
Rider seeing red over CTA Red Line
2009-09-14 21:34:00 A reader wrote to "Going Public" with questions about the Red Line. The CTA response to these questions is after the jump."I recently read the article regarding questions about the Red Line. I have a couple of questions.1). What is the deal with all these CTA employees who gather at the south end of the Howard platform during the morning rush? Normally there are three or more, all loud, telling rude, vial jokes and using very unprofessional language. If the CTA wants to save money then they should fire these employees. I'm sure there are people out there who would want their job and not treat the public space like a locker room. 2). Why is it that the Red Line...
CTA rider: What's with bunching on Orange Line?
2009-09-14 21:00:00 A McKinley Park rider wrote to "Going Public" about bunching on the Orange Line. The CTA response is after the jump."What's with the train bunching on the morning Orange Line? For the past month, there has been an Orange Line that converts to a Brown Line train at Roosevelt ("Run 7-11"). It is inconvenient for two main reasons: 1) Normal train and 'conversion' train travel too close together 2) Gap between 'conversion' train and next train is too long.I take the train to work at the 35th/Archer stop. Everyday the first train arrives at its normal 7:11 a.m., but the second train arrives between 30 seconds -- one minute later. In fact, there have been at least three occasions when...
Rider Wants Back In NBA?
2009-09-12 18:22:00 It seems that point guard Isaiah Rider has come out of retirement and wants to come back to the NBA, several sources told FootBasket. Rider, who just now turned 38 years old back in March, wants to make a comeback. He was last seen with the Denver Nuggets back in the 2001-02 season, averaging about nine points, three rebounds, and one assist per game for the team.He has had about 10,000 points and about 1,500 assists for his nine-year career. Rider was also the Slam Dunk champion back in 1994. Rider has been received interest by the teams like the New Jersey Nets and now the Minnesota Timberwolves. It has been reported that Rider has matured after his incidents he has been occurred in.If the NBA doesn't work out for him, a source told FB that he may play overseas like a team like the Olympiakos where he might play with such stars like Josh Childress, Linas Kleiza, and Von Wafer. He may also join the North Texas Fresh of the American Basketball Association.I hope all works out for R...
CTA rider: Volume down, PLEASE
2009-09-12 01:03:00 Teri Smith wrote to "Going Public" about gripes with other riders' music. Her letter continues after the jump."We're constantly annoyed by the cacophony of tinny music coming from the earphones of fellow passengers on the Pink Line. One passenger even played his radio without earphones at all. Sometimes the noise is so loud from a person's earphones, we can hear it from every area of the car. We can't even move away from it. We tried wearing earplugs once, but they didn't work. Being forced to listen to rap or hip-hop first thing in the morning is not a great way for us to start our day.We got on the Pink Line this morning, around 8:15 a.m., at the Polk station...
CTA rider: Driver cursed at me in Spanish
2009-09-11 22:00:00 Veronica Nunez e-mailed the CTA and cced "Going Public" about a bad bus experience. Information about the bus driver and bus has been redacted. Nunez sent "Going Public" the CTA's response and her response to the CTA. Both are after the jump.Nunez said she spoke to a CTA manager this morning who said the CTA would take action but wouldn't give details. Nunez said the manager told her "pushing my baby's hand out of the way was just a quick reaction to the situation.""My day was ruined by one of your bus drivers. I picked up the bus at Cicero and Archer around 8:20 a.m. Usually my 4-year-old puts in my bus card. You know how kids are, well, the bus...
CTA rider: 'No responsibility' to help stroller moms
2009-09-09 22:11:00 Michelle Mobley wrote to "Going Public" about difficulties with strollers on the bus."I have a big problem with the attitude of bus passengers who ride the bus with strollers. First of all, they seem to think that it is my duty, along with others riders, to help them get on the bus with their truck-size strollers.Well, I got news for them. I did not make that baby with you, therefore I have no responsibility to you! If I chose to help it is because of the kindness of my heart -- not your demanding attitude.Riders with strollers should not expect or wait on others to load their stroller. If they cannot handle it themselves then maybe it should be left...
CTA rider: Broken turnstile, broken spirit
2009-09-08 21:17:00 Mark Foster of Rogers Park wrote to "Going Public" with a farecard problem. Check out more CTA horror stories in tomorrow's RedEye."Just last night I was coming home from work at about 11 p.m. After getting off the Pace No. 215, I made my way to the platform at the Howard station and put my card in the turnstile. The card reader would not take my seven-day pass. So frustrated and a bit angry, I sought out a CTA employee (my second nightmare) -- to no avail. Nobody was in the security booth, the platforms or the main station's booth downstairs.Usually, there are four or five CTA people just wandering around or standing in a large group 'B.S.ing' and being...
CTA rider: I want my pedway

Domke's letter continues after the jump."I live about a block from the Wilson stop on the Red Line. According to your article, Wilson is one of the worst for assaults. I believe it fully. Every day, there are a vast number of individuals who loiter around that stop.None of these people are productive members of society. What they are doing there is beyond me. I am at the stop every morning around 5:30 a.m. to go to work, and this includes weekends. Weekends are the worst. ......

Feel free to add your suggestions at the bottom of the post."I would like to suggest one improvement to the CTA: Reinstate the 10 percent discount for Chicago Card users.A few fare increases back, the [CTA president] at the time actually [proposed] to forgo the increase for Chicago Card users, much as the Tollway exempted I-Pass users in cars from a toll increase, as it costs less to process. The most recent fare increase not only jacked up fares, but removed the Chicago Card discount as well as the 10 percent premium ($22 worth of rides for $20).It was a gigantic jump for those riders. Come on, shouldn't...
CTA rider: Passengers, 'take responsibility'

Her letter continues after the jump."I was riding on the No. 156 bus and I just was amazed at how passengers do things that could cause them bodily harm.I watched this elderly lady, who could barely walk, just stand and start walking while the bus driver was attempting to make a service stop for this lady. This elderly lady couldn't wait for the driver to stop moving before she started walking, which caused the driver to have to be extra cautious so that this woman wouldn't fall. Now my big question is: If she would've fallen because of her own...
CTA rider: Install better turnstiles
2009-08-27 22:50:00 James Monk, 34, of Uptown wrote to "Going Public" about problems with CTA turnstiles. His letter continues after the jump. Readers, do you have any horror stories about getting your pass stuck in the turnstile slot?"These turnstiles experience an inordinate amount of card captures. Card captures are, of course, when a customer puts his/her transit card in the turnstile slot, and the card gets stuck in there. The solution to this ongoing problem is to install turnstiles that swipe cards for entry. The customer would swipe their cards along the top of the turnstile where the vending slot currently is now. This would be similar to an ATM Machine's swipe feature. The turnstile would then read the card for customer access....
Rider: CTA customer service lacking
2009-08-26 22:00:00 Mark Woodward wrote to "Going Public" with complaints about CTA customer service. His letter continues after the jump."Three years ago a white dress shirt of mine was ruined when a thick tar-like substance belched out of an a/c duct on a CTA bus and splattered all over me.I was not interested in contacting the CTA about it, figuring that it would be an exercise in futility. However, I alerted the driver so that he would stop others from sitting in the same spot.He convinced me to complete a form on the bus when he repeatedly assured me that the manager of the North Garage would definitely call me about it. Of course, I heard nothing. ......
CTA rider: Connect the outer lines
2009-08-26 16:00:00 Cris Mishler, 49, of Oak Park, wrote to "Going Public" about how the CTA should spend its money. The letter continues after the jump."I was reading about our wonderfully cash-strapped CTA plans to spend about $2 billion to lengthen three lines. Call me crazy but I think the money would be better spent connecting all the outer lines. It is horrible that someone at the Howard stop needs to travel all the way downtown just to get to O'Hare. Or that a rider at the end of the Pink Line needs to go downtown to get to Midway. Connecting the outer lines would have a major impact on congestion in many outlying communities. ......
CTA rider: I want a bus from Lakeview to Bucktown

There are NO direct routes by either 'L' or bus to/from Lincoln Park/Lakeview to Bucktown/Wicker Park. You have to take two buses, which in the winter is unbearable and ends up taking FOREVER. I've lived in Chicago for four years and half the people I know live in Lincoln Park/Lakeview and the other half live in Bucktown/Wicker Park.I have heard countless people make this same gripe, and it would greatly improve our lives if there were a route added that went through Lakeview and Lincoln Park and...

CTA rider: Move that stroller
2009-08-25 00:52:00 Sharon Lynn Scott wrote to "Going Public" with a complaint about strollers on the bus."Why does the CTA allow these rude people to bring their compact car-sized strollers on buses and proceed to take up four or five seats? Some of the more considerate people use small strollers that don't take up much room, and can be folded up if necessary. CTA rules say that people are supposed to fold up the strollers to allow people to sit, but few people do so, and bus drivers do not attempt to enforce this rule.I have even seen a bus driver ask people to move from the side seats so that a young mother could park her monstrosity there. The Pace bus drivers...
CTA rider: Driver didn't pick me up
2009-08-24 19:47:00 Ali Montag wrote to "Going Public" to ask whether she should report a bus driver who allegedly zoomed past her bus stop. "Going Public" recommended she contact the CTA with pertinent information: date, time, bus number, etc."I was waiting at the Schiller/Lake Shore Drive bus stop waiting for the No. 151 south to go to work. Rider: Why does CTA let station walls collect dirt?
2009-08-21 21:32:00 Carrie Slater of Logan Square wrote to "Going Public" about a question of CTA cleanliness. The CTA response is after the jump."I ride the Blue Line daily and have noticed those brown brick walls (at Logan Square and Belmont) are not as they appear. They are actually some very cool vintage white subway tiles that are extremely dirty. Do you know why the CTA just lets the underground station walls collect dirt and grime?I realize that painting multiple stations would be very expensive and I wouldn't want the tiles to be painted over. It seems that just pressure washing the walls could make a huge difference in the appearance of the stations.I would much rather see the white tiles than brown."...
CTA rider: What $10 billion will buy you
2009-08-19 22:22:00 Jessica Lopez wrote to "Going Public" about CTA President Rich Rodriguez's statement that the CTA would need $10 billion to bring the system up to a state of good repair."Rodriguez is ridiculous. Ten billion are you serious? In this case, nevermind, leave it as is.With 10 billion the buses better be built like a celebrity tour bus and fly too. And the trains better be crash- and bullet-proof. Wait there's still room in the budget so let me add the riders should ride for free for at least nine billion years.Okay, there you go, that's what 10 billion bucks will buy you."...

CTA rider: Why does the Chicago Card Plus expire?
2009-07-22 19:00:00 Amanda Younger of Wicker Park wrote to "Going Public" with a question about Chicago Card Plus expiration dates. The CTA issued a press release addressing this topic on July 16.
How CTA fare hike affects different rider profiles
2009-07-08 13:00:00 The Trib's Getting Around columnist, Jon Hilkevitch, in Monday's column told us: "Many riders have taken a second look at how they pay their way aboard buses and trains since a fare hike this year and the elimination of popular bonuses when value was added to CTA "smart cards" and the end of discounts given when the cards were used on the rail system."If only these riders had read CTA Tattler at the beginning of the year, when I laid out how the fare hike would affect different rider profiles. Depending on how you used the CTA, you may have seen increases increases from 13% to 61%. In that post, I also noted that riders like me who take the...
New CTA survey seeks comments on service, rider experience
2009-07-02 13:00:00 A new survey featured prominently on the CTA home page asks riders about their bus and rail experiences and how they could be better. It also looks for comments on the 80%-20% split on the gasoline tax for highway-public transit funding, and for thoughts on capital spending. The latter two issues are like preaching to the choir. But that's OK. It's good to see new CTA President Richard Rodriguez engaging his customers about the service they get and how it might be improved. In my interview with Rodriguez last week, as well as a City Club speech, he said one of his top priorities is to bring a stronger customer focus to everything the CTA does. And as new president, he wanted...

Ask the Addict: KNIGHT RIDER, BROTHER & SISTERS, DEXTER, Michael Ausiel
2008-10-22 16:05:00 I heard a rumor that PUSHING DAISIES is done as a series and seeing as you are the most in the know person I know. Is this true? Or have I been bamboozled? — Dan B. The TV Addict: The facts are these. People stopped using the term Bamboozled in 1931. But seriously, as dreadful as PUSHING DAISIES’ ratings have been — and they have been dreadful. ABC has yet to bury the show six feet under. Which is why if you really, and I mean really care about the fate of Ned, Chuck, Olive and Emerson you will be sure to not only tune into a brand new episode of PUSHING DAISIES at 8PM tonight on ABC, but knock on every house on your block and convince your neighbors to do the same.* *Please Note: theTVaddict.com does not condone door-to-door begging and pleading in an effort to raise the ratings of your favorite shows. Random Musings: KNIGHT RIDER, Mena Suvari & HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
2008-10-21 21:53:00 As much as this TV Addict would like to agree with Maureen Ryan’s assertion that the only reason NBC President Ben Silverman picked up KNIGHT RIDER for the entire season is because “KITT has taken over NBC!” I can’t help but feel that a car running a major television network is somewhat ridiculous. Which is why I’d like to take this opportunity to post theTVaddict.com’s very own theory that let’s face it, makes way more sense. Brace yourself… because Ben Silverman is obviously a Cylon and renewing KNIGHT RIDER is all a part of his secret pro-machine agenda. Flipping through this week’s fantastic issue of Entertainment Weekly featuring a sneak peak of J.J. Abrams STAR TREK re-boot, this TV Addict couldn’t help but notice an advertisement for Lifetime’s SEX AND LIES IN SIN CITY, starring Mena Suvari. Begging the question: What happened to the young actress who broke onto the scene with scene-stealing turns in AMERICAN...

KNIGHT RIDER Review: Worst New Show of the Season
2008-09-25 16:14:00 When NBC President Ben Silverman first announced the re-launch of the KNIGHT RIDER franchise, this TV Addict was more than prepared to cut him a little slack. I mean who can blame the neophyte Peacock President for wanting to generate a few splashy headlines, cash in on America’s seemingly never-ending love affair with 80’s nostalgia, not to mention, grab, what surely amounted to a huge pile of cash from Ford [Three cheers for vertical integration!]. That said, following the train-wreck, err… auto collision that was February’s two-hour movie [see review here], Ben Silverman is officially running on empty.
