Kuentz-Bas Tradition Riesling Review
2008-05-08 00:00:00 It's time once again for Wine Blogging Wednesday and the host this month is Tim at Winecast. For those stumbling upon this who don't know what Wine Blogging Wednesday is, it's a monthly event when wine bloggers from around the globe all write about a common topic. The theme this month, for WBW ...
WBW #45-Old World Riesling
2008-05-07 14:19:00 It's that time of month again, WBW! The event really crept up on me this month, I was down to the wire, just heading out to pick up my bottle yesterday afternoon. Our host for this month is Tim of WineCast, who is pulling double duty this go around as he was also the host for the 2nd WBC, which also crept up on me and I didn't get around to finishing the book for this time. As always, the host is responsible for picking the theme for WBW, the brainchild of Lenn of Lenndevours, and posting the round-up after the event. Tim has chosen Old World Riesling for this month, asking us to pick up any bottle of Riesling from Germany, Austria, Alsace....and a couple of other places. With that in mind, I set out to find my Riesling. If I were writing this post for just a regular post, I'd have titled it "Old World Riesling with a New World Label." I don't normally go in for the eye-catching wine names/labels, and it actually wasn't the reason I purchased this bottle. The owner of my fav...

WBW #45-Old World Riesling
2008-04-12 17:50:00 Our host for this month's edition of the virtual tasting known as Wine Blogging Wednesday is Tim of Winecast. Tim has chosen a fabulous theme, one of my absolute favorite white wines, Riesling. However, his stipulation is that the wine must come from the "Old World." So choose a Riesling from Germany, Austria, or the Alsace region of France. He'll give you a little leniency if you want to go with Northern Italy, the Czech Republic, or Slovenia too. You can read all the details here. This month's WBW deadline is May 7. Get shopping and tasting and post your review on May 7 or if you don't have a blog and want to participate send your notes to Tim at "winecast at gmail dot com" with WBW 45 in the subject line.

Renaissance Riesling
2008-02-27 16:35:00 In the late 70’s I remember drinking a lot of Riesling from Chateau Ste. Michelle. At the time, Riesling was “the†grape in Washington State. As the Washington wine industry grew, French red varietals took over and especially here in Walla Walla. In the late 90’s we saw the Riesling grape slowly find it’s way back with German winemaker, Dr. Ernst Loosen who partnered with Ste Michelle to produce, Eroica, which received many awards and accolades. And it was just a few years ago when another renowned winemaker from Germany, Armin Diel, arrived in Washington to partner with the Long Shadows Consortium and launch what would soon to be another Riesling, Poet’s Leap, which would also be well received by the wine critics.Almost a year ago in May, Steve and I went on a two day tour of the appellations in Washington State. Our gracious host was Gilles Nicault, general manager and winemaker for the Long Shadows Winery in Walla Walla. Of course, after two days we were overwhelmed, ...
Drinking the Dr. Loosen Riesling
2008-02-01 17:29:00 I've heard a lot about Dr. Loosen Riesling over the years but just hadn't gotten around to trying it. While at my parents' house I found a bottle at the local wine shop and had to have it! I picked up this 2002 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Spatlese Riesling from the Mosel Saar Ruwer at MV Wines for $34. It clocked in at only 7.5% alcohol by volume and had a real cork closure. On the nose of the wine I found honey, flowers, minerals, petrol, and a stony note. In the mouth the wine was dominated by honey and apricots. The wine was smooth and drinking really well, but I could see how you could hang onto this one for years with the acidic structure. This bottle may have been the hit of the Christmas holidays, although an Eiswein we had gave it a run for its money. I would definitely buy this wine again.

2006 HUNT COUNTRY VINEYARDS SEMI-DRY RIESLING
2008-01-25 23:13:00 This review is one I've had on my desk for quite some time but just hadn't gotten around to posting it to the site. A 2006 Hunt Country Vineyards Semi-Dry Riesling from the Finger Lakes Region of New York. This one had an excellent nose with a vision of "freshness" coming to mind when I first took it fully into my nose. After tasting I noted that it also tasted fresh and light on the palate with just the right amount of sweetness. True to its name, it exhibited a little bit of dryness but not the kind of dryness that makes you feel like you're drinking air. Nice, smooth finish made this an overall enjoyable one. I easily awarded it 4 Corkscrews. It retails on the Hunt Country Vineyards website for $13.99 but looks like it is going fast as they only have 5 cases left. Get it while you can! Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often, Drink this Riesling!

Clandestin and Riesling
2008-01-14 05:02:00 As part and parcel of teaching a private class on the fundamentals of wine and cheese at Tria Fermentation School a few nights back, I had the opportunity to taste a few goodies. One cheese in particular struck me for its individuality and funk: Clandestin, a dual milk cheese, blended from equal parts of cow’s and sheep’s milk, made by Fromagerie Le Detour in Québec. It’s a washed rind, pasteurized cheese, which comes in small discs about the size of a hockey puck. Every wheel that night was a little different, some firm and pliable of pate, others oozing and odoriferous, showing a darker orange tinge to their rind. I enjoyed a slice from one of the latter sort. My first impression was of a bacon-like smokiness, along with a slightly sour lactic tang that reminded me of Saint-Marcellin. There was some grassiness, but in a damp, slightly briny fashion that evoked comparisons from various class members to the aromas and flavors of caviar, mushrooms and shrimp. Curious s...

Fire Roaring
2007-12-20 13:59:00 I don't normally associate Riesling with a wine I would drink while sitting in front of the fireplace, but that is exactly what we did. At least I get a little credit for serving a hearty cheese fondue in front of said fire, which is why we needed a white wine!Riesling is what started my love affair with wine, but I haven't seen a lot of it coming out of California. I gather the growing conditions aren't exactly ideal and it works better in colder climates. But there are some wineries who dabble with it in CA, and Nelson Family Vineyards is one.We purchased this bottle of 2005 Nelson Family Vineyards Riesling for around $17 when we were visiting Sonoma in 2006. It started to occur to me the other night that I probably want to clear out the remaining few older white wines that are hanging around in my cellar. It had a real cork closure and clocked in at 12.1% alcohol, with only 184 cases made. On the nose the wine displayed honey, lemon, and orange blossoms. It smelled sweet....

Trust Cellars Riesling - 2006
2007-12-11 16:03:00 Last week Steve went to Trust Cellars to visit Steve - Steve Brooks at Trust Cellars, that is. What is there to say about Trust Cellars that hasn't already been noted? Well, let’s see - - everybody has pointed out that Brooks left his CNN job in Atlanta to come to Walla Walla to make wine. Okay, what else? He was a cellar rat at various wineries and in fact, even at the Long Shadows winery. Which leads me to - -Steve Brook’s Trust Cellar Riesling. Not sure what has been said about Trust Cellar Riesling, but here is where I can finally have my say. Steve bought a bottle from Steve for me to check out. The 2006 was the first vintage for the Trust Cellars Riesling and my-oh-my did that time for Steve Brooks of being a cellar rat at Long Shadows pay off. Trust Cellars Riesling was very reminiscent of the Poet’s Leap Riesling executed by Armin Diel, one the leading Riesling producers in Germany. Which means - - this is a good thing Martha! We decided to check out the new location o...

Happy Hour: Chateau Ste. Michelle Eroica Riesling 2006
2007-11-14 23:27:00 When shopping for white wine, I usually steer clear of overly sweet Rieslings. However, one Riesling I can’t get enough of is Eroica. It’s a rich, fruity wine from Washington state that is developed with a complex mix of old-world meets new-world techniques. The grapes come from many different wineries to make the perfect blend. ... Related Entries: Happy Hour: Wolf Blass RieslingLate Notice Chicago Event. Michelle Tan Introduces Handbag Line Tonight. Anakena Riesling, Single Vineyard 2003.
More German Riesling comes to India
2007-11-11 22:10:00 Ulrich Langguth was in India recently with his sons to launch his Riesling wines from the Mosel region in South-West Germany. The vineyard of Goldtropfchen at Piesport is one of the world's most famous Riesling sites with outstanding GRAND CRU wines. The vineyard of Gaispad at Traben produces qualities of great finesse and perfume in its wines. The wines will be sold in collaboration with Finewinesmore through a mail order system. Consumers who sign up can choose to have specific wines delivered to them or they can choose to have six different bottles sent to them each month. Riesling is a white grape variety grown historically in Germany (see German wine), Alsace (France), Austria, and northern Italy. Riesling wines are often consumed when young, when they make a fruity and aromatic wine which may have aromas of green or other apples, grapefruit, peach, honey, rose blossom or cut green grass, and usually a crisp taste due to the high acidity
2006 STANDING STONE VINEYARDS RIESLING
2007-11-08 01:22:00 Wednesday, November 7, 2007A very special day today and unfortunately I'm out of town for it. #1 will know what I'm talking about. Today's reviewed wine, the 2006 Standing Stone Vineyards Riesling, is from a region that, quite honestly, I knew nothing about when I had the opportunity to try this wine. Man have I been missing out. Not only on wines from this region, the Finger Lakes Region of New York, but this grape as well. #1 and I popped the cork on this one recently and poured a couple of glasses for tasting and enjoyment. Not expecting much I was shocked how good this was! An off-dry Riesling, this one had a very "clean, mineral" nose, which both of us normally like. On the tongue we noted peaches and pears and more of the clean, mineral taste that was picked up on the nose. A nice finish based on excellent acidity and balance. Don't let the off-dry comment scare you off as this is far from a typical "dry" wine and is loaded with flavor. This one retails for abou...

Happy Hour: Wolf Blass Riesling
2007-09-05 23:03:00 I’m not exactly sure why, but I usually avoid Rieslings when I’m shopping for white wine. I can never remember if it’s pronounced re or ree, and worry that each bottle is going to be sickeningly sweet. However all of these fears and insecurities were blown out the door when I tried Wolf Blass’s 2006 ... Related Entries: New York Fall Fashion Week 2007: Bill BlassDefinition: RieslingSpring 2007 . Crab Cakes and Riesling
2007-08-22 14:16:00 *Disclaimer: I received this bottle of wine from a PR firm that is promoting the pairing of the wine with recipes from Chef Todd Gray. This bottle of 2006 Wolf Blass Yellow Label Riesling from South Australia arrived on my doorstep last week. It also came with a recipe for crab cakes by Chef Todd Gray. At 12.5% alcohol by volume, closed with a screw-cap, and with a recipe that didn't actually seem too difficult, I figured I'd give this a try on a weeknight, especially when I saw that hand-picked Maryland Blue Crab was on sale at my grocery this week.My crabcakes are the ones on the Corelle plate with the broccoli. The PR shot is the fancy one on a green salad. Not too bad if I do say so myself. And as I measure all my cooking adventures, I would say this one was a success as Matt requested seconds! I'll post the recipe at the end of the post, but overall, it was really easy to make, perhaps a half hour total between prep and cooking, the hardest part was finding the ingredie...

German Rieslings from Mosel
2007-08-08 02:30:00 I have to admit that being in the wine trade is sometimes very rewarding, especially if you like to travel to the interiors of the country and explore the cultures, tradition, food and of course the wines. Every year I look forward to visiting a new wine region and this year was no exception when I visited the famous wine country around Mosel in Germany. A postcard from Vishal Kadakia.

music review... LEFT: this man brought me to tears in my riesling <------ e
2007-03-26 00:48:00 LEFT is the title of eric roberson's latest CD, a true neo-soul music masterpiece. i can't remember the last time a CD not only bumped this hot from first track to last, but swept me through such a powerful range of emotions. eric continues the tradition of soul kings like marvin gaye and stevie wonder with funky, bass-heavy tracks that deliver plenty of d'Angelo flavor. vocally, eric roberson has the smokey magic of brian mcKnight or dwele. all of this and: eric roberson writes soul-stirring lyrics like it's nobody's business!two brilliant songs of the many neo-soul winners i love on LEFT:the track "Pretty Girl" reached in and touched a real sweet spot way deep in my soul. it was a remarkable moment. i wish that every female on the planet could hear this song: it is healing. these are the words that every girl secretly longs to hear.i mellowed and blushed to myself... went ahead and gave into eric roberson's whispering to my soul...by the time he reached track #13 -- "Couldn...
