Rooney had issued a statement saying that he had not been given any about the future squad and that he will not be signing a new contract, which confirmed that he did want to leave the club. Days later, after discussions with the club, he put pen to paper and signed a new contract. Defenders Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have spoken about their feelings towards the England forward. Speaking to United-Latest.com Ferdinand said: "It was really important (for Rooney to stay). Wayne is settled at this club, he is a world class player and a big part of the team. In my heart I always knew he would stay, he is a true Red." Whilst the saga was on going, Evra was very vocal about what he felt on the issue. 2010-09-28 19:47:00 During his pre-match press conference, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will be out for 2/3 weeks and that Paul Scholes faces a 10 day lay-off. Rooney picked up an ankle injury during the 2-2 draw against Bolton at the weekend. The striker is now set to miss the Premier League game against Sunderland and England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro. "It will be two to three weeks. But it depends because Wayne has done quite well with his recovery from injury in the past." Sir Alex also confirmed that Scholes will be out for a short time with a slight calf problem. The good news is that Rio Ferdinand is set to return to the defence alongside Nemanja Vidic, for the first time this season. In six Premier League games without Ferdinand, the defence has conceded nine goals.

After having a scan it was confirmed that Ferdinand had suffered from damaged knee ligaments, and his tournament was over before the finals even started. It is being reported that Ferdinand is making good progress with the injury and could be fully fit for the start of the new season. This news has coincided with the 2010/2011 Premier League fixtures being released. Ferdinand had a terrible time with injuries last season and as a result he only made 21 appearances for United last season.
